Sometimes it is better to pull weeds from your yard than having to keep spending money on weed killing sprays, only to have the weeds grow back in a short time Make your garbage disposal last longer and save on the electric bill by discarding large food waste into a plastic bag for the trash (unless you compost) Don't leave the lights on if you're not in a particular room When time to get rid of your worn out walking/jogging shoes, remove the shoe laces which are usually still in very good condition, and keep them as utility cordage for tying things down Unless they are no longer wearable, don't throw out your old underwear Save them for when you travel, and as each day that passes wearing them, trash them This will free up more space in your suitcase in case you purchase gifts to bring home But make sure you have enough underwear to last your trip! Comment from : Emerick LaMontagne |
Clean the garage out with garage sales, the attic too All that stuff we no longer use is just collecting dust Make those useless items "collect cash" for you Comment from : Emerick LaMontagne |

Consider “cost per wearing” when buying clothing and shoes A $50 blouse that falls apart after two washings is $25/wearing But a $100 high quality blouse you wear once/week for one year costs less than $2 per wearing If you can wear it for two or more years, by taking care of it, your cost per wearing drops even lower Buy basic clothes, like a white button down shirt, and black slacks or skirts, and dress them up with accessories, like scarves, belts, and jewelry brTaking care of any item of clothing, even “fast fashion” will extend its life I have tee shirts, sweaters, and pull on pants from Walmart that are several years old, and still look new Comment from : ProgressiveHeart |
If you need furniture or other household items, shop at consignment shops in more affluent areas of town We got a Stickley end table, normally $800 (yes, you read that right), for $175 We found a complete, in the original case, set of sterling silver cutlery (knives/forks/spoons) for $30 Look for high quality cookware/kitchenware as well All-Clad, Le Creuset, Emile Henry, and Kitchen-Aid are all good brands Comment from : ProgressiveHeart |
I make laundry detergent by mixing equal parts OxyClean powder (I use the “Free” version) and washing soda (NOT baking soda…you’ll find it with laundry detergent) I use a potato masher to break up any lumps, store in an angled candy jar with lid (Walmart has them) I throw in a Tablespoon measuring spoon One Tbs per load is all you need Extremely cheap per load, no scent, one plastic container (washing soda is in a cardboard box) brRather than wool dryer balls, toss in a clean bath towel It helps absorb water, so faster drying, and it helps fluff up the clothes Or, if feasible, hang clothes outside to air dry Comment from : ProgressiveHeart |
Many libraries have free museum passes They also have classes, book clubs, concerts, parent and child groups, low cost printers and faxes, computers, some offer GoPros and telescopes…brLibraries are my favorite way to live frugally, with zero sacrifice Comment from : ProgressiveHeart |

Buy unprocessed foods in larger quantities, oatmeal, potatoes, rice, big box raisins, pop corn kernels in bags , no boxed foods , etc whole chicken, turkeys , not sliced meats drink water and tea, tea bags are cheap , hot or iced , you’d be surprised how low you can get your grocery bill buying the old fashioned way , don’t have time to cook all that ? Stop watching tv and playing with your phone , there’s a couple hours make big batches of soup and rice , bake a bunch of potatoes on a day off Comment from : Dee Riccio |

Some of the things I do to save money is I always rip my paper towels in half and many times thirds I rarely use a whole paper towel Also, I always buy cleaning supplies (if I need them)at the dollar store (be careful some off name brands are virtually water) although I found that the only cleaning supplies I really need are baking soda, vinegar, Dawn alcohol wipes which you can find for $099 per container For cleaning the toilet I found getting the generic powdered Comet works well or SnoBowl makes an awesome toilet cleaner and it's only a little over a dollar per container I also use the old fashioned dishwasher power instead of the pods because I have found they recommend too much detergent for the machine- the same holds true for the washing machine Comment from : Ellem |
Use a wash cloth instead of toilet paper for drying the urine drops brPut a sprinkle bided in the commode instead of showering the whole body when not needed Comment from : Angela Bender |
I have been buying all my furniture and big items on Craigslist for years, couches, cars, chairs, desk, dining table, hutch, coffee tables, mirrors, beds (b careful on mattresses won't do that again), my son bought a golf cart, bikes, plants, patio furniture, I stay in my area mostly, and I have met some really really nice people My children have done the same Just be careful who you do business with, good vibes only Comment from : Carly Lam |

A word of caution re: reusing food containers It's amazing how quickly they accumulate and can contribute to household clutter after awhile! Only keep the ones that you really can use and try to recycle the rest if possible! I can recycle the glass and metal items but don't have plastic recycling available for anything beyond #1 and #2 beverage containers Comment from : Janet Stonerook |

My guess is whoever wrote this list doesn't clean Newspaper used to be the housewife's secret trick to shiny windows The reason it worked was because the ink contained lead This has since been removed - because you know being toxic and all It also means the trick no longer works and all you get is patches of paper residue brbrAlso why would you have a dryer if you're trying to be frugal when line drying is free? Comment from : ploefff |

Stopped watching in the middle because none of the "tips" were things I didn't already know When talking about packing snacks, why show soft drinks and french fries? You're gonna pack french fries in the morning for an afternoon snack? Duh Cut out the juice, soft drinks and alcohol to save a BUNDLE on your grocery bills, on your dental bills and on your future medical bills These items are totally unhealthy and very expensive They damage our bodies AND the environment ALL prepared foods are unhealthy, expensive and bad for the environment Downsize your living space to save on energy costs and upkeep Cook at home from scratch using fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains - no canned items, no prepared products You can save a ton of $$$$$ Work from home to save commute costs, wardrobe expense, food costs and more When you're at home, you can cook while you work and preserve your sanity too Comment from : Jeka Lambert |

I buy a lot of things at thrift stores and garage sales (That doesn't mean they have to be dirty or broken) - there are so many brand new items at thrift stores these days, clothing with the tags still on them, personal items someone got as a gift and didn't want, etc Comment from : Janet Roche |

GREAT adviceWe have gone grocery shopping 🛍 🛒 ONCE A MONTH, since our kids were smallThey're almost all now in their 40's! We'd take one child with us, get a sitter for the others , and the child with us got to pick a place to eat out with Mom and Dad, before shopping Their "special time alone with usWE found that when we went shopping once a week, we were spending around $500/month more, than shopping monthly When things ran out, unless very necessary, we didn't buy anymore till the next monthWe need to go to two, or three, stores so we don't look like HOARDERSBut, it's worth it, and we have food all month long When "something" has "come up", and travel isn't possible, or whatever, we have food for the whole month, at leastand we get extras of some items, for STORAGE, in case HARD TIMES come "into play"GOD BLESS US ALL 🙏 Comment from : Linda Paxman |

I save truckloads of money by making my own eco washing powder No nasty chemicals and it works out at under 5 (English) pennies a load This will now be even cheaper because I bulk buy when possible I purchased a smaller quantity at first in order to check it works I can now buy in larger quantities, so even more money will be saved You're not going to believe it, but this washing powder is 100 better than the pricey shop washing powder No fabric softener is needed, or salts to clean the washing machine Honestly, the amount of money saved is incredible Comment from : sister kerry |
