Orangewood by far, especially plugged in Comment from : MalTheGentleman |
Takamine G series should be high on the list of quality acoustics under $1000 I’ve got a $600 AUD Takamine G series & a $2000 Maton and there’s really not a lot between them besides solid back and sides on the Maton and better pickup system in the Maton but sound wise unplugged there’s not a lot between them Comment from : chris H |
Yamaha?? Comment from : Cameras & Watches |

Kudos for demonstrating the beginner guitars with riffs that a beginner like me could play Using only the mic the Orangewood sounded best to my less than trained ear On the electronics the Walden really shined I was most disappointed in the Hummingbird Thanks again for a fine video Comment from : Steve Mercure |
I like the Orangewood Comment from : Glyn Dwr |
There's only one answer: Seagull Comment from : TickleMeShlomo |
If you can find a used Taylor GS mini for around $400-$500 they are a great little guitar with a big sound!! Comment from : Ronald Munoz |
My go to budget acoustic would probably be either a cheaper Breedlove or a Seagull, both make such excellent guitars Comment from : Sean Riley |
For me the Epiphone and the Walden sounded superior Comment from : Chris Scrivens |

The epiphone looks great but sounds awful Comment from : CallSignJammer |
This is cool wasn't expecting the Orangewood to sound so good My fav's, Oragewood, Walden and Fender Comment from : Joey Carvalho |
Fender make shitty guitars, so it's Epiphone hummingbird for the win :) 2nd place goes to walder and 3rd place goes to orangewood (just) sorry fender you dont even get runner-up coz your guitars play like crap sound like crap and are made like crap and are just allround crappy lol XD Comment from : jamie marsden |
Yamaha FG800 or 830 Really anything in the FG/FS series Comment from : Jamoe |
In the Walden price range, the newer Sire Larry Carlton A4-D would be my choice For fingerstyle, their Grand Auditorium style is a good choice They've got a touch of style, like the Orangewood and also that subtle low-profile pickup control system which does look better And for similar price to the Walden, you get a solid back too, and roasted spruce top as well as that better pickup system Choice of burst or natural finishes too With the Epiphone Hummingbird, I think it's worth paying more for the all-solid, $700-800 Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird Which I do think gives you most of the 80 of the tone of the Gibson, for 20 of the price I do like the Hummingbird aesthetic, and there's also the Dove for even more fingerstyle friendly body/sound For me, the vintage sound of the Epiphone's reminds me of old Nick Drake albums, and his Guild F-20 Not too big on the bass, thick in the low-mids / mid-forward, smooth in the highs You can sing over that guitar sound, just more sparse quiet fingerstyle, not so much for voice+strumming I think that sound records better as a more solo guitar sound, dreadnoughts work better sitting in a denser mix Comment from : Compucorder64 |
No Harley Benton? 😢 Comment from : Chaos |
I just bought a 1981 Hohner HG series acoustic for $200 at an antique gallery These are hit or miss but if you find a good one it literally competes with guitars that are 3x-4x the value It sounds amazing There's nothing you'll find that sounds that good even in the $600-$800 range in any guitar store Comment from : Brian Grobe |
Teton Got a used Teton acoustic for $260 and it's the best acoustic I've ever played I don't know how they can sell them under $500 They don't skimp on anything Comment from : SpartanburgSteady |
I have an Alvarez AD60 that I really enjoy I think I paid around 3 or 4 hundred when I got it years ago It has the best action of any acoustic guitar that I have played and the price was good Comment from : Phil@4young |
I m surpriced many comments are in favor of Orangewood The way it sounds on my good sony headphone it wasn’t the best Specialy electic it was very bad sounding I liked the Walden for the deep balanced sound But my own guitar with fishman sounds way better than all the guitars Could this be the internet youtube sound quality? Comment from : Bart vangorcum |
Tanglewood is a good choice Washburn makes some great guitars for under $500 Even firefly makes great beginner guitars with solid top and bone bridge and nuts for under $300 So there are a few Comment from : Booze & News with Tim and Dut |

Man that orangewood sounds real good❤❤ Comment from : kiwigunnernz |
Rhett, I agree with you all the way on the Orangewood Love the looks and tone BUT disagree with you on the Epi through my own personal experience I have seen the quality control of their under $50000 acoustics is TERRIBLE!! I personally bought one from Musicians Friend and had to send it back three (3X) times before I gave up and settle on a similar Fender model However, if I knew about the Orangewoods I would have given that a try Comment from : A W |
About to sell my J45 Just picked up an old Washburn D21s/n for $279 Needed a tusq saddle and new strings but this thing is cheap gold Might even grab a d25 after I’ve been messing around with this one Not worried about dropping or scratching Solid spruce/rosewood guitars (no laminate) real rosewood fretboard Comment from : Dan Harris |
Orangewood makes a great guitar Comment from : Hunter Scott |
>> Ibanez AW54OPN <<< $230! Sounds like a $900 guitar Comment from : Barry A |
Dude new light strings will sounds like tamborine , to test acustic you need one week old medium 12ga light strings are for eletric Comment from : ALBATROS |
Great video Schecter also makes some really nice, 000 sizes, budget acoustic guitars They are around $55000 we have one and they make great beginner guitars because of the sound and the size Comment from : Hayes Tech |
I would like to see the same 4 guitars, but with medium gauge strings Nobody ever tests guitars these days with medium strings on them All of us bluegrass players can’t tell squat about these guitars when they all have light strings and even you are playing them way milder than we do So we cannot tel if they have what it takes or not because nobody does them like a bluegrass player And I mean nobody I have found yet Everyone uses sissy light strings Sorry It it’s true All good Martins come with medium phosphor bronze strings on them for a reason Comment from : Steve |
The answer to this question is yes This may be the best time in modern history to get a quite good acoustic guitar at a reasonable price brThere are many to choose to frombrWhile dreadnoughts are the most common size, there are now very nice smaller guitars available Dreads aren't for everybody Comfort is important Look at 000s and 00s Comment from : Patrick Roe |
New set of tuners polish fretslevel fretscondition fret boardbrAdjust neck straightenusually file/sand saddle downto get to play how I like Comment from : Kevin Knight |

you should try mantra guitars bri think they are great value but who am i to say you should try them Comment from : sohan Roka |
Best 500ish as far as new, is hands down the Yamaha transacoustic I’ve been playing it a lot wayyyy more than my J45 lately best guitar I’ve ever owned under 1500 bucksthat being said they aren’t all equal I’ve played a few transacoustics that weren’t worth a flip but I found a sunburst one that’s about perfect especially for that price range Comment from : NatureBoyRicFlair |
I would like the Fender for the case, I like the Epiphone's tone (and the Orangewood's) The Walden is really in a different price point for me, but a lot of interesting features Sorry i didn't get in in time to get a guitar! Comment from : david cole |
Iv been looking at guitars in this price range That Orangewood looks and sounds great however I don't know if it will be easy to find in Europe, or Ireland more specifically, I would need to hold it I wouldn't buy blind The nicest I found to date is the Takamine GD51Ce Yamaha also have very good bang for buck in this range Comment from : Kking |
I wouldn't trade either of my old Yamaha plywood FG guitars for any of these I think the Fender sounded best for the $ Comment from : PUDINTAINE 1 |
I totally agree with the final thoughts It's also so cool how there are some great options out there for this price range👍 Comment from : Brandon Plumlee |
Gretsch Jim Dandy homie Comment from : Quequechan Bushcraft |
I like the feeling of a neck on a stratocaster, so Fender for me wins Comment from : Domagoj |
The Epiphone Hummingbird is the only guitar of this group I'd consider Comment from : Vintage Bikes |
Fender definitely the bestbrEpiphone the worst brIn my opinion only Comment from : Mike B |
Glad I found this video again Thank you Rhett! Comment from : Ton Wanten |
Isn't 500 considered intermediate these days? Major brands offer entry level solid top at 200, and that's good enough for many amateurs already At 500, you get pretty decent gears Comment from : 趙溫 |
if $500 is BUDGET, im never gonna be able to buy a guitar :( Comment from : LiveWire45 |
Orangewood sounded the best Comment from : Cory Burchett |
Man, once you say the companies sent you the guitars, I can't trust the reviews anymore If the company knows the guitar is gonna be in a video, they aren't sending you what the average Joe is gonna get They're gonna make sure the setup and everything is top-notch (as much as it can be for the model anyway) when they know they're sending it to someone making a video Comment from : Domino Lexington |
im an average bedroom plinker imho yes, you just gotta search and try out maybe its my "unskilled" ear but I simply don't believe anyone needs to spend over a grand for an actually good sounding good playing guitar I played a sub $300 acoustic electric cort guitar just the other day Comment from : 46 GOAT |
I like your guitar playing Comment from : Dean Gulberry |
Fender Comment from : Moth |
totally agree! fair and objective! thank youOrangewood!! Comment from : Ron Boff |
Rhett, what’s the current Orangewood Echo Live model name… Echo Torrefied Spruce Live or Brooklyn Live? Thanks Comment from : Daniel Neveloff |
It's a shame that Orangewood aren't available in the UK, as I would've liked to have tried one of those in my recent dreadnought search ('Orange' - Tilly is so funny) However, your rating of the Hummingbird (and the Epi Les Paul in that recent video) was one of the reasons I tried out the 'inspired by Gibson' version of the Hummingbird What a guitar, even though it wouldn't qualify for this shoot out because of the price point, it's properly amazing for the money I haven't felt the back of an acoustic vibrate like that since I tried a full fat Gibson J200 Thanks for helping me on the path to budget priced dreadnought righteousness Oh yeah, I bought one, I was sold on the first strum Comment from : ezbass1 |
It would have been more informative to hear where the acoustic guitars where made Like the video and your choice of the Orangewood was mine too Mahalo for this presentation Comment from : Patrick Dumadag |
Seagull S6! Great tone and quality! Comment from : JED |
I'm a huge fan of wide necks I'd love a review of great options for elect/acoustic wide necks at different price points! Comment from : Sean ONeill |
Orangewood for me!!! Comment from : Michael Allsup |
Get a Orangewood non-Live and install a K&K, perfect gigging guitar Comment from : DID CHOI |
Of the guitars, and to clarify, I am a Fender fan, I would NEVER own a Fender acoustic ever again I have had a couple Fender acoustics, most recently the T - Bucket Hot Rod and it is garbage It had a bad neck set from the factory and since I bought it on the used market, not knowing about this, Fender wont honor a reset They are trash and I would NEVER buy another one again Also, the Fender sounds like crap, compared to the others in this lineup I'm not surprised Comment from : Timothy Mallon |
Hands down the orange wood is the best sounding guitar Comment from : Ryan Humpert |
Man, why dont you take off your finger rings before you clunk them around on the guitars Comment from : maaka makana |
would love a parlour guitar survey; I'm a big guy but hate draping my arm over a dread and love my tiny guitar, which fits in an overhead bin on a plane Comment from : Ross R |
The Orangewood sounded best to me, with Walden being second I started learning to play guitar in the early 80s The quality of the beginner instruments available today is so much better than any of the first several acoustic guitars that I owned This is also true for electric guitars and basses The entry level Squiers, Epiphones, and Ibanezes are great instruments Comment from : Mark von Wisco |
I think I like the orangewood one the most Every time I hear an orangewood, they have this certain sound to them, it’s like a buzzy bassy sound is the only way to describe it but it’s a good sound Comment from : Eden Atwood |
I recently did some extensive shopping, and the Epiphone Hummingbird made it onto my short list But I ended up buying a Mitchell MX430 with the "quilted ash" body $479 at Guitar Center I'm no expert, but to me, it really stood out from the crowd: sounded good, and felt very comfortable in my hands I'd be curious to hear your thoughts Thanks! Comment from : kentmulter |
Just bought an Orangewood Mason Live yesterday But I have to say I really love the sides and back of the Fenderlighter in color than on the Orangewood Comment from : dbreardon |
I agree; The Orangewood and Walden sounded the best And I have to pick the Orangewood Comment from : billchessmen |
1 Orangewoodbr2 Waldronbr3 Fenderbr4 Epiphone brbrDifference between 1 and 2 is greater than the difference between 2 and 4 Orangewood sounded that much better Comment from : Aaron Varughese |

Walden, orange wood, fender, Epiphone Comment from : Anthony Arnett |
Orangewood sounds the best! Comment from : Michael Gabriel |
I use Elixirs on my acoustics to avoid that scratchy sound that you're getting Most people I know HATE that sound I've had people say that sound is awful but I don't get it at al on my Taylor Also Yamaha make cosistently good dreadnoughts (the FG series) and they have piezo pickups I sold mine to a guy who is a professional musician years ago- he's stllusing it live Comment from : Terry Johinke |
I'm actually looking for an acoustic guitar so thanks for this video its really insightful I liked the Orangewood Comment from : Jade Koia |
Thanks so much for making a video like this I'm just starting up again and am looking to buy something a little nicer than what I have already Just curious, the affiliate link to orangewood doesn't seem to work anymore Comment from : Chris Lo |
Hi, your video is very useful ! Only listening to the sound, I chose the Orangewood, and as I am a singer, you have reason, I think it's the best for me So now I'll try to find it but if I can't, would you have other suggestions in the same kind of electro acoustic guitar, something maybe I still haven't heard about (there's so many different kind of guitars) ? Thank you very much ! Comment from : Geneviève Lampron |
My epiphone dove is pretty sweet for around 500 although it’s 20 years old Comment from : Allen White |
Why did I find myself just closing my eyes chilling out to the music tho… Comment from : Mac Daddy |
Great information! Thank you! When you have a moment, please confirm the type of D'Addario light gage strings you use Are they 80/20 or phosphorate bronze? I thought I heard you say in the video you use 80/20 phosphorate bronze (2:32 min mark) Comment from : R L K |
orangwood !! Comment from : Elizabeth Trotter |

I am obsessed with the hummingbird but as a singer I need one which has the mids a bit lowI am confused what should I buy Comment from : GHOST _ gaming |
