Jeeze man, if only I had come across your videos last year My HR rep Told me that negotiations don’t happen in government, so I could either take it or leave it… 😑 lol

I can't thank you enough for all the videos and for taking the time to answer all our questions Do you have any template of step increase request for new hires that you can share with me, please? I received the TJO for GS-12/1 and have already completed all the onboarding steps including fingerprint, e-QUIP, and drug screening And I'm hoping it is not too late to negotiate the stepbrThank you again for you time and consideration

Hi! I received a notice of referral/eligibility for GS-12 and GS 13, the TJO is for GS-12 Step 1, should I try to get GS-13 based on eligibility approval or try to meet the same pay level with a higher step request? Additionally, I'm in the process of an application with a different agency simultaneously, where I was referred/found eligible for GS-15 is it possible to use this referral to negotiate? Or does it not matter since its a diff agency?

Hi, I left the government last August and just interviewed for another position a week or so ago I have a few question’s 1 Are there any times when a TJO comes in higher than a step 1 or do you always have to negotiate? 2 Since I’ve been out of federal service for almost a year, how would I be classified coming back in? (Rehire/reinstated etc) Thanks!
Comment from : Bianca Waters

Trina Intuned
What about the locality pay? My current BASE salary is more than the base salary I'm being offered at a GS 12 Step 1 but with locality included the offer is more than my base salary Can I still negotiate?

tmoss3434
Thank you so much for providing this video Beyond helpful and has given me the necessary tools to help negotiate my TJO! Much appreciated!! I have a few questions regarding the response to HR First, should I request to negotiate all items at once (if planning to negotiate steps, leave, and incentives)? Also, should I have all of the "justification" research done at the time of submission or wait till they respond? Finally, how can I find out if the position is considered a "hard to fill or high turnover?" The position I received an offer for was open for 20 days Thanks again for all of your videos!

Just got my TJO for a Gs12-1 position and it is about 15k less than I make now Do I send an email back to the person who initiated the TJO with the step increase request?

Thank you for the video! I received a TJO for a GS-5 step 1, with the full job potential being GS-7 Can I also negotiate to have them start me at a GS-7 instead of 5? I have plenty of experience and am certainly qualified for 7 (and make over GS-7 step 10 salary) Do they just begin with the lowest possible offer? Thanks for any help, and would you be able to share the template if I email you?
Comment from : John M

How long does it take for a response to a negotiated offer?

Hi Kasey thank you for this video Very insightful Would it help to request a higher step if the job description (GS7) asked only for a BA degree but one has a Master's degree as well? Would that be a good enough reason to ask? I also sent you an email for the template, please be on the lookout Thank you!
Comment from : Lydia E

My apologies! I have an off-topic I'm hoping you can help answer If I accept a TJO and move forward with the hiring process Am I required to wait until the probationary period is up before being considered for another federal role? I recently received a TJO and I'm working through several thought processes Thank you!

Thank you so much for your video I got a tentative offer for GS-12 step 1, but since I have over 20 years of experience, I would like to negotiate salary and vacation I didn't use the link in the offer email to accept the offer, because I was afraid if I accept it I won't be able to negotiate I sent email to the hiring team and got email from them stating that my email request suffices as the response that they need for now I hope I did the right think not to use the link in the offer However, I have no idea how to start the negotiation conversation, what to say Any examples would be greatly appreciated Would you mind sending me email template I can use? Thank you so much for your advise!

Thank you so much for your very informative videos, Kasey! I interviewed for a GS-9 - GS-12 position and received a TJO for GS 10-1 I'm glad to have been offered a higher Pay Grade however, the salary is still below what I was previously making from my non-Federal job so I want to negotiate the Pay Step I'm nervous to negotiate because I was laid off and currently unemployed anyways but no harm in asking, right? However, I have no idea how to even start the convo Do I provide a specific Pay Step that's close to what I was making or should I leave it open? Do you happen to have an email template I can use? The link on your website is not working :( Thank you so much for your advise!

Gregg Vigeant
Thank you so much for providing this valuable information I am retired Army Colonel within the Medical Field and considering a GS position I receive an AD retirement, but had a break in service where I worked as a civilian full time for ten years before coming back onto AD Will HR consider the ten years of full time work as a credit toward calculating step increase and leave ? Cheers!!
Comment from : Gregg Vigeant

Aisha King
You indicate current employees can’t negotiate So does that mean if the position is in the same grade you keep your current salary or you take what is offered?
Comment from : Aisha King

This awesome video really came right on time for me! Please don't go anywhere

I have a master's degree in global strategic communications, undergrad in advertising and political science Received a TO for an 1102 Pathways program at a GS-7 step 1 I have work/internship experience but only loosely related (advertising, HS teaching, retail management) Do you think I would have any success trying to negotiate a higher step in the GS-7 level?
Comment from : Dan F

Roberto Rodriguez Rivera
Hey, interesting video! Is there an specific format to write the negotiarion details or a simple e-mail is enough?
Comment from : Roberto Rodriguez Rivera

Roger Edington
Thanks for the video I wish you would differentiate between retired active duty and retired reserves There are a few differences

For a GS-7 auditor position with a tentative job offer, should I negotiate a higher step soon after accepting it? As a recent college graduate with only internship experiences, is it likely that I would be successful for higher step within my starting grade? Doing research, entry-level auditor average salary is a bit higher than what step 1 of GS-7 is I am sure I can get higher salaries with a couple private companies
Comment from : D Z

Dpolite
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your expertise I received a TJO and am very excited however I would like to negotiate the salary please look out for an email from me for the form you have mentioned in previous replies Now off to watch your video on background checks!

Comment from : Nicole E

David Cheney
Thank you for this video! You mentioned that a Medically retired military member may get credit toward a leave bracket Do you have any reference to help me find that? I may not qualify since my medical retirement was after I was retirement eligible Medically retired @ 27 yrs
Comment from : David Cheney

Prap Patel
I was interviewed for a position at Grade 12 and offered the tentative offer which way lower than what I make currently Second thing is I was found ineligible for Grade 13 even though I have experience of more than 4 yers equivalent to Grade 13 How can I negotiate in this condition? My current salary is more than Step 10 of Grade 13 so it would be significant pay cut if I have to consider Grade 12
Comment from : Prap Patel

Wisdom Speaks
I am currently a GS12-step one, I just received a TJO with a different agency for GS12-step one position The tentative position is a GS 12-13 I am not eligible to apply for GS-13 positions until February 2023 Would it be reasonable to negotiate consideration for promotion to GS 13 90 days after my eligibility date of February 2023? Otherwise, I would have to wait a full year from my EOD date once I am hired I am at the beginning stage of the TJO process, my confirm offer may not come until December 2022 or January 2023 which would place me just one or two months from being a GS 12 for a full year Again, would it be reasonable to negotiate consideration for promotion to GS 13 90 days after my eligibility date of February 2023? I appreciate any help with this question

Lionel Bamba
Thank you so much for these videos! I just had an interview where I checked the box to be considered for GS positions for 11-14 Reading the requirements for each one I feel my experience states these qualifications clearly, however, I was disqualified for GS 13/14 positions but retained for 11/12 Should I get a tentative job offer, would it be in bad taste or out of line to ask for GS 12 step 10 or GS 13 step 6, to meet my current salary? brbrTake a deep breath Thanks for reading through that 😅
Comment from : Lionel Bamba

Ebony Mariah
Thank you for this video! So do I choose 'yes' or 'contact me' to the TJO even if I don't want the starting grade? Also, is there a template for the negotiation?
Comment from : Ebony Mariah

Meditation Melodies
Hi! Ensuring I'm understanding correctly, once you accept the tentative offer, you can begin negotiating with HR They cannot rescind the original offer just because you try to negotiate, right?
Comment from : Meditation Melodies

Attic Dust
I appreciate you making these videos! Thanks!

Jerod Garcia
I just received my tentative offer for a GS9, with just about 3 years of direct military experience for the job Is it ridiculous to ask for the highest step possible? I’m just trying to get a good idea of where to start with what step to ask for
Comment from : Jerod Garcia

CE User
The specialist on leaves specifically emailed my spouse that they only consider federal experience and not experience gained outside of federal employment for leave accrual rate She was able to negotiate a higher step for higher pay but her leave accrual rate remained at 4 hours After 3 years of federal employment it will be increased to 6 hours I thought experience outside the federal government is considered? Does the policy depend on the workplace?
Comment from : CE User

CE User
How do you determine what step level should you negotiate for? Is there a formula? Is it based on the years or hours of experience worked?
Comment from : CE User

CE User
When you move into a higher grade, do they also consider the current step that you have? Will that step carry over into the new higher grade?
Comment from : CE User

CE User
Can you negotiate for salary/step and leave credits for job experience in the past? I mean, not currently working but had job experience in the past under a similar job
Comment from : CE User

Fortunate Son
Do you have any information regarding the NH pay scale and how to negotiate it? Or is it the same? TIA
Comment from : Fortunate Son

Jon B
The CFR and OPM state the two step rule is "no less than two steps" why couldn't a current federal employee negotiate for more than two steps?
Comment from : Jon B

Redneck Ed
Your videos are really good, so thank you for posting You may want to consider some audio leveling though because your volume level is way lower than the ads Blew my ears out when the first ad popped up

James Riley
I got a question about leave negotiations: I served in the military for four years This justifies my jump to the 6 hour leave bracket And I jave been in the industry for 12 years and I have a BS degree in the field I work in Would this justify me asking for the 8 hour leave bracket? (First time as a GS employee)
Comment from : James Riley

Kristen
Excellent presentation! I have a question, any help you can offer would be appreciated! I left as a 13-6, seven years later they are recruiting me back to my previous position Why are they trying to tell me that my pay will be comparable to what I make now as a Professor? Shouldn’t I come back as a 13-6? I was there 3 years?
Comment from : Kristen

Leslie Jones
I'm returning to federal service left 21 years ago as a GS11 step 5 going back in as a GS9 Can I negotiate from the step I left out as? Can I negotiate to get my time back? I completed 14 years of service
Comment from : Leslie Jones

Elizabeth C
Thanks for the great advice! brQuestion: Should one reply to the HR email containing the TJO with the requests to negotiate, or is there a step in the process specified for negotiations? I'm wondering, in a practical sense, how you actually submit that requestbrAlso, how soon after you receive your TJO should you ask about negotiations?
Comment from : Elizabeth C

CE User
Tried negotiating and got nothing Take it or leave it response Basically starting from step 1 despite years of nongovernment experience I think that is the trend now, the government does not negotiate The documentation required was very thorough and all was for nothing
Comment from : CE User

Hi - I am currently not in the federal position I am waiting on my firm offer I have travel that I cannot move that will occur, expected to be about 4-6 weeks after I start Will I still be able to take this travel?
Comment from : TheHalyem

RoseAntoinette
Is it possible to negotiate if you have previous federal experience in a different area but at a higher grade and step (10 years) and you have had a break in service (more than a year)? Example: I was a GS12 step 5; the position I am being offered is a GS 9 step 1 I have 10 years of federal service with a 5-year break in services Great video by the way!
Comment from : RoseAntoinette

Hi Kasey br brI'm sorry to see your other page was hacked I have a question about pay ranges and whether you can negotiate those ranges If the pay range is $36,118-$58,158, and I am being interviewed at the GS6 level, will I be able to negotiate the pay, or does that mean I am not qualified for any higher pay? Also do you know what GS6 pay would be? It's for a position with the US Attorney's Office as a Legal Assistant OA I have an associates degree in Paralegal Studies, a bachelor's degree and a national certification as a CP (certified paralegal) br brThanks for your help

Andrew Fuentes
