HelloTalk and Tandem are pretty interchangeable, and useful once you're conversational to practice and also make friends HelloTalk's chat rooms have much younger users (anyone over 25 is old), and less mature vibes, but the social feed feature is neat and the groups are very useful if you get invited to one Tandem's chat rooms are much more friendly, with older users, great for practice

Duolingo is horrible They make more mistakes than most beginners will They are nothing but a gamified advertising platform No one ever actually finishes a duolingo course Worst is that duolingo only improves the advertising, not their plethora of errors Duo only exists because it's free - and it's worth what it costs, nothing

Oh Mondlypurely deceived by its lifetime full membership campaign, I paid a somehow discounted price and downloaded it for some languages I saw that it teaches Believe me if there was an F tier like some of these charts, I'd totally put it there Something looks like a pro is that you can learn any language in it via any otherand it has a lot in the list But it's not really a pro because the courses consist of a certain list of words and phrases written and paired in all these languages Not all align perfectly either It also is really rigid about the word usage It almost wants word-for-word I had stuided Indonesian through Babbel and Duolingo, so I know someand in Mondly there are many mistakes I mean totally incorrect stuff This is unacceptable, yet I have paid and have this urge to use it anyhowbrbrA similar thing happened with Busuu for me I was studying Russian In one part it said the verb for "sit", and the next word was "stand"but not as in the verb "to stand"but in a noun form as a "stand" in a fair and exhibition, or a booth for selling stuff Again I used Busuu for rememberance, because actually I had studied it the old school way in a language school classroom, for a restart I used Busuu but unfortunately I had to stop because of these mistakes

I used duolingo to go through their Finnish course and I need to say this: It was terrible The course has remained untouched for 3 years It doesn't explain anything about grammar (Finnish is VERY grammar-heavy and also very dependant on it) so having nothing explained is just frustraiting Sure you could ask the mods well, you COULD 2 years ago The discussions have been locked for 2 years I cannot judge the popular courses on there since I only used it for Finnish But my goodness the course is awful

Hi - I am a kid and I am learning Spanish on Duolingo and it's great One problem is, as a kid, Duolingo is basically my only option due to it being free That goes to many kids as well

I was curious about these apps, which is why I tuned in here I actually think duolingo is very good for basics, however I can’t stand this or any app that has bells & rewards & prizes After all, you use an app to learn the language, not to win prizes! Also, sorry if I’m rude but as you are a linguist I’m disappointed that every sentence you speak is stated in the form of an uncertainty or questions (is this what’s called “up-speak”?) Anyway it’s not professional Otherwise, great info!

I love both HelloTalk and Tandem, but prefer Tandem because of its design (I just care about the aesthetics and the UI a lot)brbrHowever, most of the Tandem interactions were overseas, whereas I've met some people from HelloTalk in real lifebrWent for a coffee with a Chinese girl who is studying my language, and even got a Japanese woman to visit my city when I heard she was coming to my country!
