For my second year of taking mandarin in high school, my teacher was fired It was the second half of the year, and they couldn't find us another teacher, instead they gave us a permanent substitute teacher for the rest of the school year and made us all just take rosetta stone courses I felt like I was losing the steady progress I had already gained (the lessons felt dumbed down) It was not fun and my classmates (who had already struggled paying attention with my teacher) we're even more uninterested and easily found ways to cheat off one another In summary, I don't recommend using it lmao

I agree with a certain amount of things But I'm really surprised that you criticize some apps because they're not fun enough to use, yet you praise Pimsleur so highly, by far the most boring method for learning languages I have used I'd rather play overpriced Rosetta Stone, than listen to boring and cringe-worthy dialogs in Pimsleur

I really like Busuu, even tho the stock images are kinda lame i preffer them It happened to me with Duolingo, everything was animated and had a bunch of colours and movement and the notifications were just a lot, this more "boring" layout of Busuu was so much better for me cuz Duolingo was overwhelming I get it the more gamefied kind off thing but everyone has their prefference haha

I think lingodeer is good too It also has anime phrases(informal phrases) to make you understand while watching anime, the issue is the phrases of anime is limited

I can’t speak highly enough of Language Transfer I used it to learn Spanish Currently using Pimsleur for Portuguese and finding it very good Unfortunately Language Transfer don’t offer Portuguese currently I have used Duolingo but don’t really rate it I know a lot of people love it but Language Transfer and Pimsleur are far superior if you’re serious about learning a language

It is also a bit personal I think I don't like apps like Duolingo because there is way too much going on and It is too busy and a bit childish even Some apps try so hard to get you motivated that you end up with choice overload and closing the entire app because it isn't fun anymore I guess I'll stick to babble for now

Pimsluer also has hardly any languages! However Memrise is one of the only ones I fo7nd that actually does European Portuguese instead of Brazilian, so that’s great!

I've been using Duolingo for a few months and I have to say, I'm both impressed and frustrated by the app The presentation is wonderful, the app is fun and beautiful but - at least for Korean - the lack of grammar ruins it That's the whole point of the beginning phase I tried out the Japanese course and the Spanish one, too Both have amazing explanations Makes me wonder why would anyone make a course available without a proper structure No flashcards or word list, either

Busuu is amazing, when taking courses with iTalki or Preplay you make quick progress, I find it a lot of fun, particularly the social aspect You have to use it in conjunction with other materials S-Tier for me

Pimsleur is amazing I'm glad that you rated it highit makes me want to check out the other apps you gave a high rating I have been using Pimsleur for years to jump-start a new language (recently Russian and Ukrainian), and I've been using DuoLingo to help me learn to read words in the Cyrillic alphabet, so I am glad to see you gave that a good rating as well (although I like how you rated it the app as solo use vs use with another app) Pimsleur and DuoLingo are nice pair

Seems a little weird to have Rosetta Stone be called expensive because it used to be almost $500, but Pimsleur which is close to $600 for each individual language is called affordable Even at the monthly subscription rate Pimsleur is more expensive than any other app I've looked at by at least double, more than 5x more expensive than some months I don't necessarily disagree with it's placement (I've heard a lot of people say good things about Pimsleur), but calling it affordable feels absolutely ridiculous I was able to borrow the CDs from my library, and while it seemed well put together, being 2-5x more expensive than any other option for just MP3s that don't even give you any feedback feels crazy to me

I would use Duolingo to only study the things learned in class or other apps I use all the other apps for more fluency and they actually use native sentences (Memrise, Pimsleur, Busu)

I'm learning Japanese I've used a bit of Rosetta Stone, Memrise, Duolingo, Michel Thomas, just started Rocket Languages The one i'm most impressed with and feel that i've learnt the most is with Michel Thomas Agree with you on Rosetta Stone, what a waste I like Duolingo as sometimes learning the language seems like a chore, so having it in a game style motivates you to learn, however their latest update sucks and i've stopped using it Think i'm going to try Language Transfer Thanks for the recommendations

Duolingo removed the forums and the league system, no friend list, no competing with each other Now it's just a gamified learning app I'll give Duolingo a solid F because it has tons of translation mistakes, not to mention their nonsensical sentences They rely on freelance contributors and the quality is really spotty French is good, German and Chinese are ridiculously bad

I can confirm that Babbel is not fun-oriented, they'll literally ask you to complete their grammar definition like - You use passive when the subject is i_/i A relevant B irrelevant But they are the only one that I've tried that teaches grammar

How about APPs like LingBe, the real need of talking with someone, most of the times on these apps like HelloTalk or Tandem it's hard do find someone to talk with, and the idea of talking with someone randomly it can be beneficial especially for who feels shy as first approach

If i would recommend a language learning appbrIts MondlybrIts a fun and well made app where you have chapters in a well made graphic homepagebrThe lessons are made into 3 parts with a word learning part and a Handsfree part where you have to talk a conversation with an AI to improve your talking skills (only con is that the handsfree version is really crap without wifi connection)brThe third part is mostly a list made into a brain graphic where ya can see the words you’ve learned without getting through the lessonbrI highly recommend it

I agree with Babbel being boring, but to me, all the gamifying stuff tends to get boring, too The big plus in babbel is that it has the best approach to learning imho: brlearning sentences, not words, learning how people actually speak, not weird grammar exercise sentences etc and it has a space repetition system included

So, despite a video you posted about learning Spanish WHILE ON A Mac LAPTOP running on OSX, you dismiss the ADVANTAGES of a Desktop Version for your own App! A desktop version can have many Advantages when it comes to learning ANYTHING Screen area allowing significantly enlarged text for the visually challenged is just onebrbrAnd while it is now the Middle of October you still don't have the confidence to post any videos of YOUR APP working, even though you and your team have been working now close to THREE yearsbrbrBut thanks for your work to rank other apps
