Too much risk Are you serious? Mutual funds could fall very fast As long as she diversified her income, invests in index funds, and invests a bigger portion of her money into more low risk low reward funds they will be okay

This is terrible advice These people can't afford a market downturn They need to have a majority of their investments in something safe, not growth mutual funds They are 67 now, they don't have time to ride out a 30 drop in the market when they need the money right now They need a mix of equities, bonds, money market, and maybe REITs They should hope for returns equal to their drawdown rate, like 4 to 5 And I just like to throw in that Dave's 12 returns on mutual funds is BS

How do you feel about purchasing rental properties as a fixed-income vehicle for retirement? Basically investing less in mutual funds in order to pay cash on a rental property It seems like the rental market doesn't fluctuate nearly as much as the stock market and you can always sell if you need to I'm still paying off my debt so I'm not investing yet, just working on ideas
