I'm a disabled 61 year old woman on SSDI and SSI with a disable son on SSI also, I can't find a dealership that would lease me a car because I have bad credit do to a house I abandoned back in 2005 because it partially caught fire by faulty wiring The city knocked it down and sent me a bill that is now $30,000 My son and I have medical appointments and I need a reliable car, is bad enough not being able to own anything over $2,000 in Ohio but not being able to lease because they keep rolling this bill before the six year limit expires Any advice? Comment from : Victory |

i am on disibility ssi im on it for my inability to consistenly work i can work but due to my mental health i can't do it consistently i'm schitzoaffective and am on a good deal of meds and go to therapy every week and i still cannot work its not going to happen for me and i am coming to terms with that i would love to have another income to go with it but i have no idea what i could do when it is an unfortunte reality that i won't be able to do it everyday Comment from : Novice Stitcher |
So this is interesting I think the government is messed up in this way I think you should be more like canada and have free Healthcare Because yes i have schizophrenia and autism and a cleft palate as a kid But schizophrenia is life long and sometimes you can live without pills but i dont think i can Without life affecting me differently but what is wrong with getting work and still being able to work It shouldn't matter Like you cant earn money and be disabled in a way lol that sounds ridiculous to me to be honest Comment from : Rapper rapper |

nobody cares about disabled people in this country you get treated as crap Comment from : Darkdimension |

I think the best things one can do if they’re receiving Social Security, SSI, or disability is 1) Live off your check and make use of as many subsidies as you can - food, rent, utilities, medical, etc This will allow you to keep more of your check for the things you need to use your check for And 2) Work up to the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amounts These change every year and allow you to make a little extra income without fear of losing your benefits As for getting a house and making other big purchases without penalty, a special needs trust or ABLE account money can be used for that Comment from : Juliet Parrott-Merrell |
Just stash the extra cash at home each month as many of us low income recipients do It's the only way to have a large savings without getting penalized for going over their set monthly income limits besides if it's not in your checking or savings they always think you spent it on necessities Comment from : D G |
We cannot have a discussion about financial strategies for SSDI so long as public figures don’t under the word “permanent” In cases of behavioral health, SSDI may be needed lifelong These health issues can seriously impair working a standard job Many, if not most, applicants would be astounded to hear that someone is considering trying to get them back to work with all the financial risks that come with their disabilities Comment from : R Greenwald |

Mr Nasty strikes again Comment from : Lady Lyonteeth |

My grandma is 75 years old and has been depressed since she was young She’s on meds but meds don’t solve the illness Most mental conditions are diagnosed bc they are lifelong! She was married so she was able to have a house to babysit in and that’s how she contributed to society It’s just sad how disrespectful people are to those who struggle This stuff is usually passed down for generations what do you want them to do? Oh yeah, die “ a man doesn’t work he doesn’t eat” well did Jesus not tell us to take care of the mad and disabled Disgusting attitude and so ignorant Doesn’t even try to understand Comment from : hobolove2468 |

I’m disabled and when I called he told me to get a job I tried to tell him I’m unemployable but he seems to think a traumatic brain injury is no big deal Comment from : Kathleen Biederstadt |
Dave's advice is greatfor the able bodied He has no understanding of the various disabilities and how they make people unemployable brMany people who are disabled, look upon those in wheelchairs with almost a bit of envy Because no one thinks that they are "faking" or exaggerating and the companies make adjustments for them However there are thousands of disabilities that are legally discriminated against still And to be honest many of them would put too much of a burden upon employers to hire Comment from : Why Me |

Comment from : SulyDoes |

Man the government system is to make sure you stay stuck and Dependent on their system they do offer jobs for the disabled but they have guide lines you can save over 2,000 in your bank and I don’t know if you can file for tax or be on IRS it’s sucks you will have to completely get out the system But the thing is where you will get income coming in while you constantly sick and in the hospital? You will still need the disability funds as a backup emergency Does anyone have any ideas how to get an assets while being in the system? Comment from : Name |

I qualify for disability if I cut my work hours They only allow $1220 a month of me to make and I will only get $1090 from disability if I get it I might as well work until I retire because it's going to be the same thing My back hurts if I sit too long from spinal arthritis and my lower lumbar hurts if I stand too long I'm stuck! I wanted to buy a small house and stop renting I've paid out enough to buy a house Comment from : Wendys Old Place |
Many people are afraid to lose disability not because of the tiny income they get, but because they'd lose medical care If you get $400 a month stipend on SSI, but also get $4000 in medical care and medications, it doesn't make sense to get a job that pays $1200 a month with no benefits Yes you make 3 times the cash, but when you consider the health costs, you're at a 70 loss BTW, Medicare 4 All solves this problem Comment from : oggyreidmore |
I think the government and social security disability are the dumbest people in the world They don't understand that you need money to live and do things for fun They make disabled people have to depended on government to live Comment from : Barbara Thompson |
Does anyone know how to handle credit card debt and have ssi as my only source of income thank you! Comment from : Adam Synchronicity |
