SELL LIKE HOT CAKES - "Hot cakes cooked in bear grease or pork lard were popular from earliest times in American First made of cornmeal, the griddle cakes or pancakes were of course best when served piping hot and were often sold at church benefits, fairs, and other functions So popular were they that by the beginning of the 19th century 'to sell like hot cakes' was a familiar expression for anything that sold very quickly effortlessly, and in quantity" From Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997)

Brian Herron
So the phrase "selling like hotcakes" is an early 19th century saying Hotcakes were made with cornmeal, which is different than the pancakes of today, but that's essentially what they are They were sooo popular at fairs and church events that the folks making them could barely keep up with the demand, hence the phrase Sothere ya gobrbrGreat video! Wish a had a shop to do all these ideas, maybe some day Thanks!
Comment from : Brian Herron

Scott Bionic Nerf
You should research the hotcakes crazy that has hit several times since the end of WWII I think, maybe even before the great depression Pancake houses pepper the landscape of this great land

This is a great wood project book wwwyoutubecom/post/UgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood The instructions are excellent The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood

Ok, since Matt encourages us to share, I would like to hopefully prevent some of my fellow newbies from the feeling of DUH! I've had for the past hour or so I figured out the issues I was having earlier One, it helps a lot to ensure that you are using the correct drill size 5/8 is not the same as 3/8 and will cause tear out Two pocket hole screws are designed to stop when they hit a ledge (ie, a counter sunk hole), and if you don't counter sink the holes deep enough, the screws won't go in far enough Hope this helps some of you because I feel like an idiot Come pay day, I'll be ordering the Kreg Quick Flip, I can tell you Enjoying making these and have added a new touch that I will put on the brag board once it's finished Thanks again for the help earlier Matt
Comment from : Lee Rolls

Lee Rolls
Don't know how often you look at your older videos for comments, but figured it's better I pose my question to the build I'm asking about Making the garden basket since a lot of people around here are doing big gardens and cedar fence pickets are a good price Does it make a difference that they are kiln dried? Attaching the side slats i am getting a lot of tear out with the countersink bit and the screws keep stripping out the holes and won't go in the whole way Tried both fine and coarse thread Any suggestions?
Comment from : Lee Rolls

lunalupis
" selling like hotcakes?" - simply a term for cornmeal pancakes, because cornmeal was cheap and easy to source even during the depression, and so it was something that could be made quickly, everybody bought them, and so a small profit could be made They went fast, and they were cheaply produced And, I will add, delicious!
Comment from : lunalupis

Loving the videos! Just for my clarity, when putting “strapping” on the back of (let’s say) the heart this means that it won’t sit flat because of the strapping, correct?

Hey Mike, i see the pots your making here, we had similar ones when i was a kid They are very similar to crab crates or crab traps they used years ago My dad bought some and put glass in top and used them for living room tables He found a big one fro coffee table and 2 smaller ones for the side tables They had rope on them as well Look em up in line
Comment from : James King

Trent Richards
That yellow pine pyramid doesn't look nearly as good as what is being sold Would cut into your profits, but I don't think that one will sell well without a more attractive wood
Comment from : Trent Richards

pyrobryan
99 cents probably originated so stores could advertise "Less than a dollar!" For the most part you still see that same "trick" used today because technically $19999 is under $20000 Some stores also use the cents portion of the price to indicate if the item is clearance, open box, refurbished, etc So if the receipt doesn't indicate the condition, the price paid will

99 cents means the cashier make change making harder for them to just pocket the money It seems like a psychological trick, but really it's loss prevention from bad employees more than anything Especially when you consider what a penny is worth in this day and age Few are truly fooled or fueled by the difference

CoRn BeRsErKeR
Just starting building this basket for an upcoming yard sale and a word of advice: DO NOT TRY TO COUNTERBORE A 3/8" HOLE IN CEDAR I used both a countersink / counterbore bit and a 3/8" drill bit Both completely destroyed the ends of the slats Cedar is too soft to be drilled that close to the end The best approach I've found is pre-drilling an 1/8" hole and using a #6 x 1" wood screw It still tears out some of the end but not like the 3/8" If anyone has found a better way, please let us know! Nonetheless, Matt keep doing what youre doing! You've been a tremendous asset to us all!

I decided it would be a good project to try the garden basket I watched the video portion about the basket Started, stopped, and restarted it several times It was fairly clear except for times when I could not understand some of the description I tried it with head phones and adjusting volume levels to no avail I decided to try ETSY Placed the order as a guest Everything went through ok Got the confirmation for the download My credit card was charged I thought everything was done As of 3 hours I have not received the download I sent messages which I have not received replies yet I keep trying to sign in Rejects that as saying that my email is not valid Yet, the confirmation was sent to my email How does this happen At this time I would like to cancel the order and forget the project Not real impressed with ETSY
