Hey everyone! Just want to acknowledge and apologize for the frame-rate issues seen in some of the A-roll on this video We had to switch back and forth between frame-rates to eliminate a significant amount of flicker and scan lines seen on the Plasma We think the frequent switching freaked out the render AND YouTube (in different ways), but we didn’t catch until it was live and running Thanks for your patience and understanding I’m extremely proud of our history of quality control, and this one just slipped through Safe to say it won’t happen again! Thanks for all your support!

Am I the only one who thinks that plasma technology was just much superior when it comes to produce a REALISTIC picture, pretty much mimicking what the human eyes perceive? Oled just looks fake and horrendous to me

I had Samsung plasma 5500 series i think Its panel went kaput after 5 years It was easy on eyes not hurting at all I replaced it by Sony x9000 series so it also dis not hurt eyes on cinema mode Now its display has gone kaput again in 5 yearsI do not want to spend money on Sony OLED or X90L Should I replace with Sony X80L series because those displays are expensive to replace

I bought this exact Plasma back in November 2013 51 incher Paid $800 Mine didn't have the anti-glare film that the slightly better model had It was actually my third choice as I had renovated my living room at the time, but it was the best I could get that my sound bar at the time wouldn't cut off part of the screenbrbrI am so glad I bought it The glare drove me insane, but it gave me CRT vibes when playing older video games I let my best friend keep it once I moved out of his place after living with him for a year from 2018 to 2019 He sold me his $4000 65" flagship Samsung TV from 2015 for only $400 when I moved outbrbrHe's offered me my old TV back for free, and I am likely going to accept, simply because I only own one 3DTV (his $4000 2015 TV he sold me back in 2019 for $400 Samsung's last 3DTV, and it's amazing), and I am a HUGE 3D guy to this day I want as many 3DTV's as I can get so I can "stock up" on them

dexter2433
still today they are trying to make a oled or lcd monitor as good as a crt and even today 2023 a when done in size comparison as in take a 20" crt compared to a 20" lcd or even a plasma or oled is way worse and if they had done the r&d on crt they have done on LCD and oled today CRT would way pass any tv because it is just way faster and is still today way faster when comparing pixel to pixel response time as in the speed of light response time and that is why so many still crave the older crt tech even today for some gaming and applications
Comment from : dexter2433

dexter2433
plasma is kind of like electric cars right now trying to do great things in a bad way :-) the look was fantastic the performance was well extremely expensive and short lived and later a much better way was found out funny part OLED has been around for many years but for some reason the cooler red OLED had a very short life as in 1000 hrs and it was not until they solved this problem that oled became mainstream also all oled screens are mad in a vacuum so large oled screens were a problem and many people have been rocking small oled screens on there cell phones for the last 15 years because small screens are easy to make

Thanks for this awesome video, Caleb Is it time to replace my 50 inch 1080p Panasonic PZ800U plasma from 2010? It's still my main TV I also have a 42 inch 720p Panasonic PX60U from 2006 I paid well over $2000 for each of them new I've never had an issue with either one and they still work great but I'm starting to think about getting a 65 inch Samsung S90C or a 55 inch S95C
Comment from : Terry Troyer

Panasonic made the best Plasmas Also, HDR comparison was not needed

Charles Shamseldin
I still have my Panasonic VT-50 (Viera series) 65" Plasma in my living roombrAnd it still looks amazingbrTerrific black levels and very bright imagebrbrHowever, I just pulled the trigger on a 77" S90C OLED for my game room and I can't wait to get it and compare it to the amazing Panny from back in the day

Try a proper plasma, not this Samsung trash

My plasma 50” Panasonic 3d tv just started shutting off after 30 seconds So now im looking for the next best thing Ive seen many tvs at many different friends home, NOT IN THE STORE WITH THERE OVER DRAMATIC DISPLAY VIDEOS… my plasma out performs most tvs now a days… most tv colors are not deep vibrate true colors… but i dont know everything so anyone with contradicting info feel free to share I have to buy a nee tv

Interesting, as your vids always are Butmy daily driver is my Panasonic Plasma TC-P50G10 (March 2009) and you can have it if you can wrest it from my cold, dead hands I'm still in love with the picture
Comment from : Steve Cox

CasePB
I remember my 2012 64" Plasma hummed like a bird The thing was seriously noisy for whatever reason It also looked very static like upclose
Comment from : CasePB

Bailey Boy
Pfft, I'll keep my Panasonic Plasma any day I bought a new LG g2 and you need a PhD to get the thing set up, and compared to my Panasonic it was pathetic I took the $2400 tv back and never looked back And also, the best OLED saturation looks fake, where in real life do things look like they appear on these 4K OLED, not natural
Comment from : Bailey Boy

Pointdexter5
I still have my 50" Samsung Plasma, believe it's the PN50B650 series The one thing all LEDs at the time did, was show intense pixelation during fast action/motion So of there was a close up of a face for example, and the person moved, the entire face showed pixels and plasma didn't have that same issue I plan to keep using it, until it stops working 😉
Comment from : Pointdexter5

Uncle Fester
You will have to pry my 2013 Panasonic plasma out of my cold dead hands

maastricht1983
I think if you used a panasonic zt 60 or a vt or a pionier kuro, you had a better match to the oled

I have the pioneer pdp 5000ex which came out in 2006 Hoping to get a Sony A95K soon
Comment from : TroyBeard

Zack Yezek
The part they don’t talk about is that existing OLED tech can already build 8K or even 12k displays, which is getting close to optical resolution As in the resolution of your eyeballs perceiving a static scene, which is somewhere around 16K on a smallish screen Beyond that point merely adding more pixel density has no effect on visual quality; you have to move on to other things like color depth (64-bit RGBA color skewed to give extra depth in green) and high refresh rates (to eliminate choppiness in blurs or motions) to further fool the eyebrbrThe tech for plasma tvs probably could be pushed or improved to get 4K and even HDR But OLED could and already has gone further; commercial 8K monitors already exist So I’m not shocked the screen makers went all in on it
Comment from : Zack Yezek

𝔻𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕝 𝕋𝕣𝕒𝕧𝕖𝕝𝕤
Avoid plasma TV at all costs Any TV with high voltage is a problem waiting to happen And plasma TVs would always develop image burnbrSharp made the best LCD TV's and with LED back lighting, reliability skyrocketedunless you were foolish enough to clean the screen wrong

Ahh, love this video! I still have a Panasonic plasma in my storage around here that I've offered to give away to a couple of people, but they never actually take it, and each time, I'm just SLIGHTLY happy that I still have it 😅 The good old 1080P blu-ray, PS3 days still bring back fond memories 🙂

My Pioneer plasma is still running flawlessly and in my opinion the picture is more life like than many of today's TV's Pioneer were the best imagine what they could do today if they decided to make TV's again
Comment from : Paul Cundell

I think resolution is badly understood If your display is sized correctly for your viewing area you shouldn't need higher than 1440p 4 & 8K are for people who are seated to close to their display I remember the transition to flat panel displays, a terrible time for image quality, my friends all rushed out to buy their trendy new telly (various sized 1080p LCD panels) which all had terrible pictures I stuck with my progressive scan 36 inch Panasonic CRT for as long as possible The first plasma TV I saw was the first time I seriously thought about buying a flat panel TV, resembling a "proper" telly more closely than any LCD Happily these days even my tablet has an OLED display and my main screen (PC monitor) is a 34 inch UWQHD QD OLED which produces an incredible picture, brilliant response times and a 165Hz refresh rate for smooth gaming and has 21:9 ration for that cinematic widescreen movie experience I think it's amazing what Samsung have done with Mini LED for LCD and I'd probably recommend this as an alternative high end monitor for those that spend more time within Windows Really interesting to see the comparison between old and current, thanks

Hey Caleb, I have a 2012 Panasonic Plasma TC-P65VT50 It needs a repair for about $550 I'm still in love with the aesthetic look with the amazing bezel and minimal glare! I do have a romanticism for it you talked about My budget isn't the same these days with a family and was considering a mid-tier 75" Sony Full array XR75X90 K or L model Would appreciate your thoughts/recommendations on what to do with the plasma I've been mulling it over for 2 weeks while it's sitting at the repair shop LOL
Comment from : nicholas price

JBS Audio
Thanks for the video The absolute king of the hill for plasma technology was the Pioneer Elite Pro - particularly the last run that was a monitor only I still have mine sitting in my office The inky blacks on the Pioneer are just as good as my LG OLED C8 OLEDs are the closest we will ever get to the film like quality of a plasma The clear advantage of the OLEDs is brightness and resolution, especially in HDR mode
Comment from : JBS Audio

The Over/UnderThinker
honestly, I had a plasma for years it died end of last year and I have to get an OLEDbrbrI know that the picture quality is better on my new tv, but if I could still get a plasma, I still would I miss that TV I like the look of it (maybe because I was used to it over the years)
Comment from : The Over/UnderThinker

rob spencer
I own a Pioneer Kuro which has excellent picture quality Yes, OLED's look really impressive when you seen them in a shop, but considering in the UK there still is hardly any 4k or HDR content, and like most people just watch TV using cable/Sky box, would upgrading actually be beneficial to me ?
Comment from : rob spencer

I have two plasmas, both Panasonic, that are working great we recently bought our first 4K TCL 4 series for watching TV I have a 10x12 dedicated AV room I have a Panasonic GT50 Plasma, which I love It’s 3D and I have a bunch of 3D Blu rays However, this TV gives off so much heat that I can’t use it in the hot Texas summers Thus, I’m going to buy a 4K, but want one that can provide the inky blacks a Plasma can This means I’m going to need to spend around $1000 or more for a 65inch Leaning heavy to the TCL QM8 Would love an OLED but I don’t want to spend upwards of $2K with taxes and extended warranty
Comment from : mustvid

Brett Simonis
I would have liked to see a side by side comparison of the refresh rate when watching sports My experience is that nothing has been as clean as a plasma when watching something such as football
Comment from : Brett Simonis

Nikitos
When I play old Xbox 360 games they look like crap and are literally unplayable on a modern TV They have screen tearing and terrible frame rates But on my old Panasonic Plasma from 2007 they actually look great and feel very very smooth
Comment from : Nikitos

Andrew187
I'm still using the LG plasma I bought 15 years ago and it's had at least 4 hours/day during weekdays and sometimes left on all weekend It cost me $8k at the time, but I think I've got my money's worth so far
Comment from : Andrew187

Anthony Xuereb
I love my LG 60" plasma, bought years ago and only using it now I find it easy on the eyes, looks really good without having to adjust anything which I used to love doing but find it unnecessary with this one Only issue with plasma is that you need your own wind turbine in the garden to power them
Comment from : Anthony Xuereb

Ricky Mendoza
Nah Don't like 3D !

My Panasonic TH-50PZ700 from 2007 still works great and i still use it every day! I only wish i had bought the pioneer Kuro at the time

Have LG OLED in living room, and Panasonic Plasma in bedroom (purchased 21 years ago) Both have great picture quality The Plasma is seriously close to my OLED in quality Would not give up my plasma unless it simply stopped working

I own a 50" LG 3D plasma since 2011 which I still use in my Master Bedroom For the longest I compared it to my LG LED 4K 65" and swore the Plasma out performed it I sold the 65 and got a Sony 85" OLED 4K Thats where I saw plasma's lesser picture quality Not to mention the heat plasma produces

Ronnie Kregar
Not for nothing, i have a 17 yr old Plasma TV that has as good a picture as my OLED Now they're defenetly super inefficient, use a ton of electric and are heavy as F Sadly it's finally starting to have pretty bad burn-in and image retention But there's no denying the top notch picture lol quality
Comment from : Ronnie Kregar

Stephen Seybolt
HAve a Zenith 42 inch in my bedroom, use it daily Bought it last few months of Plasma's being in stores 2010 ish
Comment from : Stephen Seybolt

David Renard
HDR and detail? Nope! HDR is losing extreme Detail in dark scenes, you can only see this huge difference if you compare to the SDR version HDR is a broken gimmick that hopefully goes away soon You can’t even adjust the brightness, which would give you more control over the black crushed areas You also need a perfectly adjusted screen, which is impossible to get, so you will never see the intended HDR anyway HDR is a step back, not forward If HDR would have all brightness options like SDR and no black crush, it would be a net positive As it stands now HDR is just crippling your options
Comment from : David Renard

David Mander
You should do digital trends vs a good review channel 😆👍
Comment from : David Mander

Joe Keogh
I have an oled LG I don’t like that HDR gets so bright in scenes where the subject in the movie is backlit and there is a great amount of the sky It also pushes the tone of highlights into spectacular territory
Comment from : Joe Keogh

Paul Smith
Shame you didn't compare to the far superior ZT Panasonic plasmas, my 2 are going nowhere any time soon
Comment from : Paul Smith

Richard Reed
I have a 14 year old Pioneer Plasma that has since been moved to my kid’s playroom to make room for a LG CX OLED Despite being 1080P 60Hz SDR, the Pioneer still holds its own for general TV use Low key, I’m waiting for it to finally die so I can get another OLED

Thanks for this video I'm currently using a (2011) Panasonic VIERA 60in 60PS34 FUll HD Plasma HDTV, and upgrading tomorrow to an (2023) LG 65" C3 Evo OLED 4K UHDTV I'm excited for the brighter picture, although mine is in a light-controlled dark living room, and for the larger screen, and nearly borderless look Big shift I already have a 4K UHD Blu-Ray player and 4K compliant Onkyp RZ-3100 AVR waiting for the upgrade, along with a 4K FireTV cube and DirecTV DVR Can't wait for the shift from HD to UHD

My 2007 Pioneer Plasma Pro 60” just keeps going! I refuse to buy another television until something happens to it The picture on it is still spectacular!

Tim
Nice comparison The conclusion is the same as I tell everyone looking at a new TV Buy on the premise of enjoying HDR, don't buy expecting everything to be astonishingly betterbrIf I had some criticism, I would have liked to see differences in the handling of older content, since I think the Plasma may do a better job with SD TV feeds in particularbrIt speaks volumes about how little technology changes when it's possible for a 10-year-old flagship to best a cheap LCD TV today, I think most people would be very surprised at that
Comment from : Tim

Tamás Farkas
I currently use a THX Panasonic plasma TV, which was not cheap in its day The picture is still excellent, with natural colours and no digital smearing Of course OLED is a more advanced, more modern technology, but there is something unnatural about it
Comment from : Tamás Farkas

Sir James Brown
Panasonic and Pioneer Elite are the best plasmas ever made Samsung is trash

lol it took me 3/4 through the video to switch from 1080p to 4k, I feel dumb, I still saw the differences described but watching two 1080p at once on a 1080p, what the hell was I thinking Rewatch is in order

Bring back plasma I have 3 51F8500s To say plasmas are more natural is an understatement With subdued lighting the plasma kills every oiled I’ve owned or auditioned brbrThe best oled we’ve had is the Sony A9G, which my wife uses
Comment from : Dave Hartwick

itsthemetho
I have no desire to replace my old Panasonic plasma TV For normal TV, especially SD content, the plasma still is awesomebrbrYou are most right that with HDR content the plasma is blown out of the water However most of my viewing isn't HDR and I see no reason to replace my old plasma That being said OLED will replace my plasma once it dies

We love our Plasma TV except for the green line going down the screen LOL Our plasma is dying It seems like all the new TV's have the soap opera effect The new TV's look great for nature but watch TV and have the movement on non plasma look hyperrealistic I can't find a video review that shows movies and TV shows
Comment from : Marilyn

I had a Samsung F8500, 8 years later, I upgraded to LG2 I gave my F8500 to my neighbor and it was a major upgrade for him vs his old LCD TV I still have a LG 3DTV that is passive and wish they would bring back the OLED 8K 3D TV in the next 3-5 years when my OLED gets up to 7-8 years old
Comment from : Bob D

Roy Martin
In my view, plasma has been completely and utterly surpassed by OLED and this has been true for some time When I got my Sony AHG, a 2018 OLED, and ran it side-by-side with my Kuro 500M, with various types of content, I was convinced Plasma does, however, kick butt right now (today) in one category – which is price One can pick them up for nothing Literally, nothing Even the best of the best Someone who paid a king’s ransom but is ready to move up to OLED will just want to place it in a good home Around a year ago, I was still paying cash $30 for a 500M It went in my garage Now, one would be happy to give it away And the thing is, even though Caleb’s right that even a mid-range LED set would beat it, it’s still (at least by my humble standards) a heck of a nice TV
Comment from : Roy Martin

Retro Mythologist
You should have also compared the difference in heat let off from these two TVsbrI remember my Plasma being so hot that I swear it could be capable of boiling water for coffee during commercial breaks
Comment from : Retro Mythologist

I have 2 CX series OLED tvs, 65 inch, and when I compare them to my late 2000s 50 inch Plasma, I sometimes like the plasma better So natural looking, blows my mind how great that tv is and still holds up to modern tvs I hated LCD and LED tvs, black levels are terrible brBTW I have some of the Samsung active wear 3D glasses, they should work on that TV Let me know if I can be a help for you getting them to you for a test on that Samsung plasma
