About the second point, is fine not to rely too much on tabs, but not using them at all is basically impossible, unless you find an original standard notation tab, maybe written by the author AND you completely know the note/fret relationshipbrbrFinally the part about not skipping music theory:brwhat amount of music theory is the bare minimum needed to be a competent player?brWhat you should know?brBecause I'm both fine for: learning the theory, as well as not needing to know EVERYTHING about it Much like Theorems and their demonstration, sometimes the demonstration is so difficult I don't really want to know how it works, just knowing it has been demonstratedbrbrBUT, certainly I'll learn what is a scale how to build a major chord, minor chord, what is a power chord while you play them But this way you'd end up learning every bit of it, letting no room to be "stupid" about theory So again:br(TL;DR)brWhat's the good amount of theory everybody should know to be called a guitar PLAYER and not somebody_who_memorized_some_songs?

l had a classical guitar for 5 years a few days ago my friend showed me "This l Love Solo" from çağrı örskaya and said that l could play like that in 5 years btw thats my fav song so l really felt stupıd not touching the guitar for months l picked up the guitar a few days ago and l ofc cant play anything l can play some easy songs that l learnt before l can fully play do l wanna know and basic songs like that but l gıve myself a promise, l wont stop playıng ıt agaın even only 15mins per day ı will play it everyday and l started savıng money for an electro (l already had like 100dolars (2800liras)) l really hope l will never quit agaın

Im 17 Ive always wanted to learn guitar and for some reason always told myself i cant do music- I did choir my last two years of high school and i absolutely adore being a vocalist However, I want to expand because the idea of being a musician is idek how to explain I just got my first guitar (acoustic) 2 days ago and started with learning E major and A chords and i honestly didnt even think about musical theory I didnt learn too much in school so I'm glad i watched this video Music theory kinda freaks me out- but imma do my best brbrMy goal is to learn the song Rosier//punk2 by Brakence and do a vocal/guitar cover Wish me luck-

7:01 - my challenge with YouTube is that I can’t quickly rewind/play, rewind/play With faster songs your ear has to hear it a few times to confirm what it is and where it’s being played This was easy with cassettes back in the day, not so easy now How are people doing this effectively with YouTube? I can only double tap to rewind 5 or 10 seconds but that’s often too much

I mostly agree with your take on tabs I was trying to learn my favorite song early on, but all of the chords/tabs that i pulled up didn't quite feel right, so i found a video of the artist playing it live and this went so much more smoothly once i heard and watch exactly what she did and this let things come together more organically for me though sometimes you just cant get it right playing by ear and thats when i go to find a tab and work from there

The point about keeping your guitar out of the case is one of the crucial, really brI am trying to self-teach electric guitar for 5 months already and recently I needed to wet-clean my place, so I decided to put all my gear out of sight for its security So I put a guitar in the case, put amplifier on the shelf and I didn't touch my instrument for two weeks at all brThere's some stupid psychological barrier, maybe some blank page anxiety gets stronger, if you need to pull out guitar out of its case to practice, i don't know brWhile it's out of its case - you can just grab it and play some notes, ending up with 3-hour practicing session brBefore this occasion I had no stand for my instrument, but right after I realized that I lost my hobby for a whole two weeks, I decided to buy one and never again put my instrument in the case for storagingbrbrI would add an advice that is associated with this problem brAs a beginner, you don't need a very expensive instrument, of course I don't know if this is a popular opinion, but one of the most important things for the beginner is to buy an instrument that looks beautiful to you And I think that (again, for the beginner) it's more important than actual manufacturer/year/its tone/etc I mean, of course you can buy a boring-looking instrument for a fair price just to figure out, if playing guitar is your thing at all, but boring-looking instrument won't catch your eye especially in several months after the purchase Your instrument should catch your sight every time you look at it, making you want to hold it and play itbrAnd of course this is also about storaging your instrument in the case There's no point in a good-looking instrument, if you're going to keep it in the case

At least you had Ultimate Guitar to refer to! ;o) When I was bitten by the bug, I was 15 in 1968 and all I had were albums and the occasional songbook, whenever I could find and afford it I played 6-8 hours a day (not bragging!) and wore out 5 copies of Leo Kottke's "6&12 String Guitar" album Boy, was that fun! Really, it was! It intensely developed my ear (and calluses) However, I wish I'd had Youtubethings woulda gone much smoother I hope kids today realize how lucky they are (they probably don't) There are so many amazing young guitarists on YT and I believe it is directly related to the visual availability Great stuff, Rhett!

4 months into guitar, and I’ve started learning triads, scales, and arpeggios recently Between those and learning some theory, for example what makes a minor triad, my major and minor pentatonic scale degrees not just the shapes, and how to put together chord progressions while using the scales to lead into each chord, have made me feel better about not actually learning other peoples songs, but still feel like I’m progressing

What do you recommend to a beginner who physically cant play the G/ G major chord? My pinky just wont reach the 1st string close to the fret while my other fingers are in the other place I tried adjusting my thumb, using different fingers, stretching but nothing seems to work its like my pinky is blocked

I like to leave my guitar out However I damaged one of my acoustic guitars doing this Because the humidity was fluctuating so much the pinless bridge split It took a few weeks to find the broken piece and finally get the guitar repaired So my acoustics live in their cases now with those Boveda humidity packs I still leave my teleccaster out though

I take your point about leaving the guitar out and ready to plat, especially in your beginner days, but I've just found that, besides dust on the instrument, it also gets into the electronics easier if your axe lives on a stand or hanger For example i find my pots go scratchy much quicker and easier when the guitar lives out of its case Not disagreeing, just raising the point from my experience

One thing I did since playing trumpet in grade school, picking up guitar in 10th grade (gradtd High school 1983) was in 2010 I bought all the equipment for a small band, but more importantly started all over again and pretended I knew nothing I started with tuning the guitar first I cannot begin to type it all here, but just learning about the tuning flaws in the guitar, the g string having to be 15 flat, and learning that wound strings go flat when you hit them hard and unwound string go sharp when strumming/picking hard This alone solved so many problems I never brought up that I was detecting in the guitar, and so wish someone would have told me this stuff Just how you approach the instrument is mega important It's recommended to get a guitar performance holder and monitor your shoulder and arm muscles as you approach the guitar to determine what's getting tight and how to stay relaxed Starting all over again as though you know nothing really opened up things and principles I otherwise would have never learned had I not done this That's why some guys play 30 years and are pretty dn good Other guys, with the right instruction and approach are accomplishing the same progress in a couple years Like 2 or 3 years instead of 2 or 3 decades Geesh

"don't use tabs" is dumb, especially when you're starting out use tabs, use whatever keeps you motivated Don't brely/b on tabs and look towards building other skills but especially just when you're starting out sticking with it is way more important than worrying about practicing wrong

I'm self-taught and have been a guitarist for over 25 years My advice to beginners is that you will have hurdles and roadblocks that you struggle with It only makes you a better player From your first year to even 25 To this day, I still learn and improve Remember, it's a lifelong process Never assume you know it all

I personally experienced the leave your guitar out and visible part I used to have it in its own little corner, out of view And after my initial new guitar phase where I wanted to spend every hour playing it (so about 3 months), I kinda forgot about it I wasn't improving fast enough, and getting into the corner, connecting the guitar, all that was just too much of a hassle Recently I moved, and I decided to place my guitar right next to my computer I see it when when I sit down, I see it when I get up, I see it when I just glance to the side And that has been the best decision in my life, because now every time I notice it, or I hear a nice riff and wanna try it, all I have to do is reach out with my hand and I got my guitar It's not the best sitting position to play, but as long as I keep just having fun with it, motivates me more to get up and amp it up to hear what it is I've learned while casually strumming it
