I took guitar lessons from ages 12-15 and literally didnt learn anything more than the basics so I got frustrated and gave up but at 18 I met my bf who's really good at guitar and that motivated me to start learning to play again, but this time by myself and with his occasional input ( I dont want him to take too much credit haha)
Comment from : Laila Rose

Anna Fall
personally, I wouldn't spend a ton on your first guitar, but the thing you should really focus on isbrbrPICK A GUITAR YOU THINK LOOKS GOOD AND/OR APPEALING TO YOUbrbrthis is so important, you don't even know picking one because you like what it looks like is one of the biggest factors in getting you to playbri started with electric guitars and I still mostly play only stratocasters, because they're so much more appealing to me I have a les paul that just kinda hangs there on the wall that I really pick up and a telecaster or any of the less often seen models would probably never even appeal to me and I'd just never use them the strat I bought two months ago sees b*daily*/b use and that's in large part because I just like looking at it, like having it around me, like how it feels to hold, ya know?

hi nice video but what about after you are confident in the 'basics' As somehow who plays other instruments in comparison im struggling to understand how to actually upgrade my playing It feels like im just learning song after song and not the actual instrument if that makes sense😅

Thanks for this video , your advice on learning chords quicker through hearing your favorite songs is amazing because you learn the chord and work on transitioning I’ve been just practice chords individually which is okay but already eager to piece stuff together

do you memorize the notes on the fret? brbri just memorize the placement of the chord on the fret (muscle memory) but not the notes in a chord am i doing it wrong
Comment from : Rica Teaño

Nick Vaccaro
Also looking back, I think that the most beneficial thing that I did early on was trying to learn barre chords almost from the beginning, even though I couldn't really use them until a lot later It feels completely impossible at first, and sounds terrible for a while after that - but once the combination of skill development and muscle development works its magic, a whole world opens up
Comment from : Nick Vaccaro

Nick Vaccaro
Based on having tried to teach myself guitar with moderate success, this all seems like great advice The only thing that I did (or would do) differently is starting off with fingers instead a pick It seemed more natural, and it felt like there was less of an obstacle between me and the strings But that's a matter of preferencebrbrOne thing that helped me out early on was using silk-and-steel strings - they're a nice middle point between steel and nylon, and make things easier on both the right and left hand

Hot tip for investing in a guitar Guitar center has a 45 day return policy You can go in and buy a decent price guitar and before that 45 days is up you can decide if you want to play guitar or not If you decide you do want to play guitar, and want a higher quality guitar you can return your guitar for a 100 refund and use that money towards a nicer guitar

it's so funny when you said you did everything just to avoid barre chords, cause same 😂 whenever there is a barre chord in a song I want to learn, I'll just shift to a song with an easier chord pattern but now I am practicing some barre chords, I guess you really can't just ignore it forever 😂 there's so many songs I want to play but it has a Bm in it 😭😂 so now I'm slowly practicing it and it's sad because it still doesn't sound right and my hand is still slow in transitioning to Bm 😭 but as you've said it only needs to be practiced thanks for this motivation!!! you're my most preferred and favorite guitar tutor for taylor swift's songs, the way you teach it, it's very beginner friendly!!! I learned a lot from you! 💗 years ago, there's like only 3-5 songs that I can play with my guitar (mostly the only part I know is verse 1 to chorus only) but when I discovered your channel, it improves my guitar playing, and I can play the song full and sing with it I'm so happy to know your channel thank you so much, Nena! 💗💗💗

Sakina Alia
Y’all, my advice is to make a plan And don’t just learn songs, learn chord changes and strumming patterns so that way the songs are easy to learn I use Justin guitar but something I recommend is practicing chord changes and strumming patterns with a metronome A lot of Taylor’s songs reuse chords so if you learn how to change between g,cadd9,em7, and d you can play a lot of her songs Same with c,g,am,f I started 6 months ago and I can play 20 Taylor songs and 15 non Taylor songs, one of which is dust in the wind which is a really hard finger style song
Comment from : Sakina Alia

jayatishree pandey
THIS IS SO TRUE In June 2021, I decided to play guitar in order to play my favourite songs ( most of them tswift songs obviously) That’s when I came across Nena’s channel I did all these things and now not only I can play guitar in general but also play a BUNCH of Taylor Swift songs This is the most helpful channel for you if also want these things Thank you Nena ♥️♥️♥️
Comment from : jayatishree pandey

Adele Olmastroni
I agree with you! You do not need to have "technical" musical knowledge and I can prove that I self tought everything about guitar through the internet and YouTube (and a lot from your videos ❤️) and I can play fairly well after just a year since I started! Obviously I'm not perfect but you can totally do it on yourself as wellbrA thing that really helped me to keep going was to record myself (either video or just audio) to "document" my progress Hearing how far I got from time to time made me really proud 🥰
Comment from : Adele Olmastroni

sadie376
Generally sound advice, as usualbrbrYes, having a guitar out of its case & where you can see it is well worth doing brbrOn buying a guitar, it's also worth considering buying used If you know someone who already plays, ask them for guidance They might even know of a suitable instrument for sale locally People trade-up (or give up), so there are some bargains out therebrbrPersonally, I can't plan my time at all My new years' resolution for last year was to pick up a guitar every day, which I pretty much managed, (even if a few of those days were only for 30 seconds, to tick the box) The more practice you can manage, the better, but don't let the lack of an organised chunk of practice time demotivate you You'll improve faster doing 5-10 minutes every day, than 2 hours once a month Even 30 seconds of strumming every day is better than telling yourself that you don't have timebrbrDepending on the style you want to play, you might not need a pick For a lot of people, a pick doesn't feel comfortable If it doesn't, start without one For some styles, you will need one, but if you already have confidence with basic chord changes & rhythm, it should be easier to concentrate on picking up the technique (see what I did there, LOL) when you do try Edited to add; I'm currently trying to get to grips with a thumb pick, which is another whole thing brbrThere are a lot of tutorials on YT & you can learn a lot from them, but be aware that some of them aren't great Also, they might be aimed at a more/less accomplished player than the level you're currently at You can always jump back, or watch it at reduced speed if you need to, or find a slower/simpler one & come back to the more challenging one once you're up to speed
