I translated between my little sibling's school and my mother once, English to Spanish and Spanish to English back-and-forth I was so embarrassed at the end because after two hours I was forgetting even the most basic of words and felt so exhausted--I blamed myself and my Spanish but I had no idea interpreting was considered such a hard and demanding job even by those working for world leaders Comment from : OF De Los Santos |
I did an interpreter's job once for a Spanish speaking friend of a English movie I often get lost cut sentences had to replay some minutes of the movie it was quite hard, some time after I did it again with another friend this time was a horror movie so there were less dialogues and were slower compared to the other dramatic movie the second was much easier Comment from : Georges Aubert Wettin de France |

Both in my professional job as well as in my volunteer job we use interpreters (at the EU commission or UN related meetings) Not long ago in my volunteer job an interpreter was translating for me (she was on the phone) when i was working with a refugee At some point i noticed she was saying more than neccesary and i saw the refugee responding to her She was giving her opinion on the treatment of family members towards him Which she shouldn't do It is not her job whether she agrees or not I had to report it because we can't have interpreters making up their own thing and showing their opinion on it Just imagine her interpretation meaning that a refugee gets send away to their country where they'll be killed just because they interpret what they want It has happened before that interpreters were spies This has resulted in people being send back and for sure being put in concentration camps or k*lled brInterpreting really is a skill I speak multiple languages and couldn't do it Comment from : Gloria Gloglo |

AI will be a great help by automatically generating subtitles, so that note-taking will become a history I never tried simultaneous interpretation, but I know I would fail since I could not remember stuff while still listening and talking With AI generated subtitles, what you need to do is simply making some correction to the subtitles In the not so far away future, the interpretation as a profession will be replaced totally by AI Comment from : wenge zhu |
That look😂😂 Comment from : Anto |

It’s also not just about knowing the languages but also the specific terms and nuances related to the complex topics Even a native speaker can’t simply talk about economics, world politics, finance etc in a professional manner at a moment’s notice They’re not interpreting small talks It takes a lot more than you think! When you've been translating for years and only know learn its a real job Comment from : Ricardo Rodriguez |
As an imigrant with parents who haven't been able to learn the local language, I end up doing a lot of both types of interpreting In a day-to-day situation, I've found that consecutive translation works best in small, active conversations, where the other participants don't mind you taking a moment to properly convey what they're saying; I use simultaneous translating for things like meetings, where you're mostly just listening and don't want to draw too much attention Simultaneous is also just so much harder! Trying to listen, remember, and translate at the same time is so much ToTbrbrWhen it comes to humor, I tend to explain the gist of the joke, even if it doesn't end up funny "She said a joke about dolphins using a pun, since purpose and porpoise are pronounced very similarly" :P Comment from : toffeebiscuits |
should be translated the other way around but its ok Comment from : Tu Ni Fvmas |
