In movies, players always seem to hit it very hard, but a real pool player knows you only hit it hard for cue ball positioning, otherwise a soft shot is nearly always better, hitting hard is another form of showing off

Hustling is how I ate in college After the bills I’d have $5-10 bucks left for the next two weeks Would take that down to one of the local pool halls and by the end of the evening I’d have a decent roll and would head for the grocery store to stock upbrbrBut the gameroom I practiced in had 9 ft tables, but most of the bars I shot in were running 6-7 ft tables, so it was like shooting fish in a barrel after training on a 9 footer

Used to be a guy back in the 80's where I grew up that was a great player, he also traveled all around the south playing in pool halls and higher end bars He drove a white Eldorado with Alabama plates I saw him playing a guy in 9 ball one weekend and he would lose a few here and there, it was pretty close for a long time The other guy was pretty well off and one of the best players around He got him to play for $50 a game Once he start shooting, they guy didn't get back to the table until he was down at least a couple grand brbrHe had a tell when he was ready to play serious He was a larger fellow and when he would grab the two belt loops on his pants and pull up his pants between shots Ran into him a couple years later almost two states away in a high end pool hall He recognized me immediately He did exactly the same thing to a guy there, started out low stakes, got the game up and took the guy to the woodshed pulling up his pants between every shot
