Hello Claire, great to see you extending your pantry Where I live bugs can easily contaminate packets placed on the shelf With a plastic container holding pantry items, food sits safely in the containers on the shelf Twice as much can be stored, especially if 2 containers stacked together 0n one shelf Have you thought about a food Saver, sealing dried goods to extend their freshness The cheaper version here in half the price of official food Saver A couple in USA "Provident Preppers" have some lots of helpful suggestions Comment from : Debby Teisen |

As a gardener I’m always interested in best harvest for least work! I’ve always grown herbs for fresh use but last year a dried everything I could Oregano, thymes, mints, dill These plants need almost no attention and yielded so many small jars of fresh-dried flavour, which I’m using all winter I dried about 70 teabags worth of mint leaves! What a saving! Thanks for good advice! Comment from : _ FatRabbit |

If you're new to growing herbs on the window sill you could try buying the supermarket potted one's first,I would recommend potting on to a slightly bigger pot and pinching out the growing tips this will make the plants bush out, you can also plant pea's on your window sill for the young shoots to be used in salads and stir frys, super easy to grow! I use the dried old fashioned pea's that are in a box that you soak before you eat Comment from : Kay Brain |
Great video I’m wanting to try dehydration this year x Comment from : Jennifer Henderson |

One of the best ways a person can use to is use government programs like food stamps like i dofood stamps is one way a person can beat the high cost of food right nowor buy a food saver and freeze yr food right away so it wont get freezer burnedand save it for later n when u see sales on meat, you can buy it and use yr food saver to freeze it for a later usethis has saved me alot of moneyin the long run Comment from : Arthur Mantzouris |
One thing I have done for years is to use residual heat from your oven or hob to finish cooking food, might not save a lot but it all mount's up Comment from : Kay Brain |

Thank you for sharing your tips I would say that using the slow cooker is a great way to cook as it saves you electricity as well as saves you time as you can cook everything in a pot 👍💕💕 Comment from : Kirsten Senior |
I love to cook and bake It's been very helpful in saving so much money You can use your veg scraps alone to make veggie broth too Canning my own food has been amazing for my budget, but even more amazing for our life Having meals that are cooked and ready to go on my pantry shelf is a time saver and it's delicious! I don't know if you ever go to estate sales, but here in the US you can find almost anything for pennies on the dollar I think I paid $3 for my bread machine that came with the manual and a cookbook I have seen a lot of manual pressure canners, jars, water bath canners Thrift shops are also great for that If you have a friend that also wishes to can, maybe split the cost and take turns with it Have to get creative! Love that you are helping others Comment from : allyroo H |

Really good video abd good sound advice for any1 who needs the tips/advice I've always meal planned, made my meals from scratch, froze extra portions as waste food is 1 of my pet hates, there's no need to waste food But I agree with you on the budget front, you say you git food budget of x amount but when u lookback its a few pounds here, a few more pounds there & it does all add up without realising it dosent it I'm a diet coke fan so instead of buying cans from the shop at work ( very expensive at £120 can, so that would be £6 week which is outrageous) I really like lidls diet coke which is less than 50p a big bottle, take It to work, lasts me a week or more Just little changes really add up Comment from : karen pridmore |
Claire, I really want to thank you for your videos I am currently sick, so I had time to watch all of them and I am so happy that I did So many great tips and recipes I only cook for two people and in 2023 I really want to spend less money on food/takeaways and do something about our food waste (I think I am already improving but I still have some areas I need to work on - fresh veggies and dairy are my problematic areas) Can't wait for your 2023 videos! brMy biggest tip is to not buy food you don't know what to do with (even if it is really cheap) I have loads of stuff like that in my pantry (I really need to use them up next year) :D Comment from : Lucienne |

I really do need to reduce my food spend Until my daughter went to Uni, I was spending £100+ weekbrNow it's just me and my 11 year old son and I still spend between £65 - £80plus I spend an extra £30 to £40 buying my son's meat from the butcherI'm vegetarian brI buy a decent amount of fruit and veg and I've noticed on a lot of other frugal channels that people buy very little fruit and vegbrI can spend £20 alone on fruit and veg What do you lovely ladies do to keep your prices low and any solutions re the amount I spend on fruit and veg (They must be in my weekly shop) Comment from : Lo Chamb123 |
In the US at least right now squashes are abundant and generally reasonably priced I store several in my basement in a milk crate with newspaper bunched up around them They keep for weeks The same for potatoes and apples It's nice because I can stock up when the price is good and draw on that for weeks Keep and eye on them If they start to turn, cook them up and freeze the Applesauce can be frozen or water bath canned which honestly is very easy Comment from : Pikayla |
Freeze every bit of leftovers which aren’t eaten brEventually you get enough to have a full buffet style mealbrEven if only a spoonful each brIt’s also a Free meal as all previously costed Comment from : Maisie Clark |

Claire, wonderful tips I especially like the 11th I always like to think, when doing something new or challenging, that we can eat an elephant, one bite at a time Because of necessity, I have taught myself, over the years, to make my own bread, by hand and machine, to make my own noodles, to use a water bath canner and a pressure canner A few things that have truly saved our grocery budget, were the making our own bread, which with the best ingredients I can afford comes to about 100 per loaf, more if I use bread and eggs, but still under 175 And, iced tea My husband loves unsweetened iced tea When we started our journey, just making our own bread and tea saved our grocery budget about 1200 to 1500 dollars per week! Think outside the box, hopefully this won't last forever, but if it does, with wonderful help from our friends, like you Claire, we will all be fine Happy New Year! Fantastic tips! My family is going into a low spin know it’s been year for 2023 and I have a really good overstock, prepper pantry! This is helped us for the last eight months here in the United States Word off a lot of inflation because we’ve been eating off of our preps! Rolling into months number nine more really going to do our best to lower our grocery budget astronomically and we can do this because of the backstock we already have! Hoping to move to northern France or southern England in the future Absolutely love your channel Comment from : Without Limits Budgets With AarynLynn |

One thing that I have learned over the years (you have to have an open mind at first because it is different than what I was used to) is try ethnically diverse food recipes since they can be cheaper I have made sweet potato roti instead of white bread for my meals I have also made Russian style beet soup (learned how on Youtube!) What I am trying to say is each and every culture has different food stuffs that are cheap and flavorful Learning from these cultures from videos has made my cooking more enjoyable and less of a drudgery Globally we are all in the same boat and we all have so much to share! I am from America but I have been learning so much from y'all in Great Britian! Being frugal should not be a sad time it should be fun and a challenge! The people from Great Britain have been through so much worse than this Please show the rest of us how you do it so brilliantly! England is so STRONG 💪never give up! Comment from : Sharon Neth |
The sad part of supermarkets is how much they chuck in the bin, i work at sainsburys & there is alot of waste & customers still end up paying for food 😫 Comment from : Joshglos |
Great tips Claire Thank you very much! I love your videos X Comment from : LH |

I hope you really enjoy canning your own food I was fortunate to be taught when I was a child, helping my Mum make jam from the peach tree in our back yard and have been doing it all my life One way to save money on the equipment that I would recommend is to simply tell everyone you know that you want to get into this I think you will be surprised by the number of free jars that come your way People ae ALWAYS giving me jars, I haven't bought any in years! Now, I am in the US where I know that canning is more popular, so this may not work in your area but it is worth giving a try Check your library for books and there are also loads of on-line resources Stat out with things that are just Boiling Water Bath canned and you will not need any special equipment, just a big stock pot that is higher than the height of your jars Also, can what you like when it is in season I wish I lived closer and could give you jars! Something my family has found helpful this past year is buying directly from local farmers For example, we live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and eggs are super expensive here We reached out to a local chicken farmer and agreed to purchase 60 eggs from her every other week Because of this we get them at a song and she delivers!
