I bought my 9872 base Cayman on the cheap and was just going to flip it for a quick buckbrThat was 4 years ago I love this car!brAnother fantastic episode!brKeep em coming! Comment from : 2KVIPER |
Based on this video I imagine the latest 718 GTS 40 would be the clear winner with the large power gains and refinements Comment from : Gold Plated Cheese |
The soundtrack is a HUGE part of the experience for me, which is why I LOVE my base 981 PDK with Sport Chrono If I move up to the 718, it’ll have to be the 40 Great review, gents 👍🦘 Comment from : PETER FRITZ |
“I can almost taste the tar” really? Comment from : Space Pirate |
owned 987 cayman R manual, the Cayman 981 GTS as manual ans PDK and a 718 40 GTS manual I'd always go for the 981 Cayman GTS X73 PDK with carbon sport seats Its actually the sweet spot exceptional car !! Comment from : J J |
981 GTS haut la main pour moi ! Il n'y a pas photo 3 magnifiques voitures sportives en tout ca:) Merci Comment from : Nutriwellness Training |
Buying a 987 was the best motoring decision I ever made Timeless styling, nimble, fun and very well built The newer gens are nice and all, but don't give me the same feels when driving Comment from : Al the hat |
Sorry but any angle from the rear is ugly Comment from : TinMan |
987 everydayforever No competition from later Caymans Others are for posers, not drivers 🤣 Comment from : Joakim Twitter |
A more comparable/helpful comparison would have been the same spec from each generation Comment from : A Kent |
NOPE NO SUBARU ENGINE IN MY PORSCHE FOR ME THANKS OR PDK ,ITS FLAT 6 AND A MANUAL OR NOTHING !!! Comment from : richard carr |
GTS 40 (the new one) £80kbrCayman 981 2013 34 S PDK £34k brOr the 2017 718 25 S £34brOne car is 10 years old but still the same price The other one is 6 years old? I'm assuming people are put off by the smaller engine not sounding like the 981? What car would you go for What's best for value Comment from : 500res |
“Over boost”?! That’s not what that’s called when you push that button Over boost is bad and throws your car into limp mode My Audi is running a ko4 stage 2 at about 20-22 psi When it spikes and hits over that the car goes straight into limp mode and sometimes the turbo shuts down completely and will literally be an NA car with ZERO boost until I turn it off pull the key out open and shut the door and restart it It happened a few times when I drove it in snow and I’d start spinning tires out of nowhere the boost would spike and it would over boost Comment from : matthew waldrup |
As someone who bought an e90 m3 STRICTLY FOR THR NOISE, i can believe anyone when they say they bought a car for how it sounds Comment from : matthew waldrup |
981 for me Comment from : Martin Gregory |
"Subaru's sound like Porsche's, not the other way around" as a Subaru driver I'm okay with that Comment from : Christopher Gardner |
I’ll take the 981 or 718 anyday 💯 Comment from : Infamous Eli |
9872 for the win br718 GTS 40 Comment from : Noel |
Why don't you guys compare the more basic models of the Cayman, something more readily available to the average Joe, rather than using an unobtainable Cayman R in the mix? Reality is that it's about, not dreams Comment from : theorangeking |
What do you mean?? The 718 sounds the meanest to me For a 4 cyl it's deep I love me a flat 6 from a porsche but that 4 banger is killer Comment from : VENOMARO |
Im trying really hard to like caymans but i just could not live with myself if i bought one over a 911 Comment from : MihalyMusic |
The optional GTS interior on the 718 makes the cabin look way more premium with leather/alcantara and contrasting stitching instead of the plastic everywhere The interior of the base 718 is really poor - a reasonably specced Audi TT feels a more premium place to sit Comment from : jeebsy718 |
987 is the best looking one by far Comment from : Armando Cardona |
I Really wish you had compared manuals rather than autos :( But still, great vid and thanks for making it Comment from : Jeremy |
Where are you? Walsenburg to Alamosa? Comment from : Michael Woehrl |
They just had to do that to the cayman with the 718 generation It was getting too close to their flagship 911 4 Cyl turbos with flappy boxes just a different level now brbrFor those that want the ultimate cayman experience there's always the cayman Gt4 Comment from : BenFinegoldSociety |
So hard to track which generation they are talking about Should have a little graphic that tells us Comment from : Anthony |
great test !!!! thanks Comment from : Federico Ciapi |
If yall want to see how the 981 really performs checkout the channel wheres981 Comment from : Leon Thomas |
I owned the first generation Cayman S and what a fantastic car it was to drive I think the new generations look better however they put me off with the flat 4 and the turbo My advice would be to get the most basic engine with a manual shift and just enjoy it This car anyway is far above our capabilities and does not need to be beefed up with horses Comment from : Kursat Osmanoglu |
Like the red one Comment from : James An |
911s are too expensive? Wtf! NO! Comment from : TeihKhaiy |
11:07 "Only 10 of buyers will opt for the manual" This means only 10 of cayman buyers are true driving enthusiasts Comment from : G P |
I would have loved to see this reviewed - al in 6 speed mt I kept hearing the word involvement engagement May have been a different result with the flywheel feel and the engine revs Still I love this content Its the first gen for me all day long and THANK YOU for the vid Comment from : A W |
How does the GR86 compare to these 3?! Comment from : Rez Selecta |
You're eating asphalt brYou can taste the roadbrbrYou do you but I don't think either of these are great For a few reasons, including the obvious one - neither of these are pleasurable or conjure appealing imagery Sounds painful and not very enjoyable when you are trying to describe the exact oppositebrbrAnyways, I gots too get me a drink I'm literally dying of thirst so bad its like I have a mouthful of unmoist road Comment from : Count Spankulots |
I drove a 718 Cayman GTS 25 at a Porsche track day, the performance was great, but the sound didn’t do much for me I currently have a 9872 S The Cayman was more fun than the 911S Comment from : Foxlake |
Cleverly edited so that the only people who know which cars you’re referring to during the video are people who know and understand these models already What a brilliant application of stupidity Comment from : Gregory Thomas |
i guess the 718 gts 40 is the final boss, sound and engagement Comment from : Battle Garage |
@2:40 The car looks like a hatchback and not in a good way unless your bias Comment from : Otis Lamar |
These are fantastic cars, fantastic reviews, fantastic scenarios Comment from : Mad Femur Fast |
How can you say the rear of this car looks good? brbrUgliest tail lights of all time Comment from : Zooski |
C'mon cayman buyers ya'll need to be buying more stickshifts so I can buy one used in a few years :D Comment from : Daniel MacDonald |
Huh wonder if the 718 is more reliable than the 981 or 987 anybody know?? Comment from : Jesus H Medrano |
the cayman r sound better than the others, idk why they say the 981 sounds better also, both the 987 and 981 have cylinder lining problem and they eventually get scoring which is a real shame so far the 718 engine probably will be the most reliable engine, its basically the 9912/992 block and cylinder lining I like to think of the 718 as a modern mid engine 356 Comment from : P D |
please do this again with the 40 GTS All manuals or all PDK for apples : apples Comment from : 1 Ln |
9872 is peak cayman, solved the reliability issues I put 65k miles on mine and made money Comment from : Chris |
There is nothing absolutely nothing exciting about EV's, they are necessary but not fun, i am dreaming about hydrogen cars or synthetic fuel without co2 emissions, i hate tesla, i think they are butt ugly, and porches tachyan line seems bland, well i am just an old dinosaur going extinct Comment from : Ulrich Kristensen |
I just don't see how you can realistically compare nearly a million cars (987,981,718 to be precise) I think you might be overextending your ability to do an analysis Comment from : Charlie W |
IRL the 4 sounds pretty good! Even the base pulls pretty hard! Comment from : Matt Farrar |
The turbo 4 cars sound like junk Comment from : Scott smith |
Very very different cars Lol Comment from : ed blair |
I’ve really been looking at caymans as a source of getting that Porsche feel and power at a fraction of the cost Which I’m glad the cayman is available in many different dealerships Especially 987’s and 981’s But can I point out that you smacked the 718’s front bumper a bit on the hairpin 😭 Comment from : Da_Aloha _Z |
I have a Porsche Cayman S Sport 231 of 700 its amazing Comment from : gundogsdirect |
Forget the cars - that scenery and those roads are stunning! Where is this? Comment from : Matt Cowan |
GOT A BASE CAYMAN GLAD I DIDNT SPEND MORE Comment from : Joe Harris |
Great video! Where does one shop for a 987R or 981 The Porsche website only has the 718 Comment from : Peterson Pierre |
I was shopping 981S vs 9872S in manualended up with a 2012 9872 S and couldn't be happier Coming from an Elise and 4C background, I actually preferred the drive in the 9872 The 981's are great but they don't feel as nimble or raw as the 987's Also I prefer the way the front looks on the 981 but the rest of the car looks better on the 987, especially from the back My 2012 is over 10 years old and has 31k miles but no rattles or creaks anywhere Build quality is excellent Comment from : MattG |
Back when the Cayman came out I used to fantasize about having one with the engine from a Turbo S or GT2 brbrAnd I still think it'd be cool You could even badge it as Cayman Turbo S or GT Back in the day I wanted to call it the GT4 But that wouldn't work anymore Comment from : Overanalyse This! |
Never mind about who came up with the flat 4 first All we want to know is if the sound of the 718 is like the sound of a Subaru with a flat four Comment from : Overanalyse This! |
“Subarus sound like Porsches, not the other way around”brThat is a compliment to Subies to me! Comment from : sheneedsyrruup - thedotneedsme |
first gen was the 986, sec gen was the 987, third gen was the 981, and fourth gen was the 982 Comment from : Qiyin Pan |
I'm wondering how many wild animals did you hit while driving trough the canyons :D Comment from : Kode 9 |
Can you fit exhaust from 718 on 987? Comment from : Montoya Selbsterkenntnis |
really enjoyable comparison I love my 987 S it would be nice to find an R which I'm more likely to buy next versus a newer model Comment from : Aeneas137 |
What is that yellow car at 16:33 someone please tell me Comment from : Salvatore DePrima |
It was easier for me to get in and out of my A-H 3000 than the 987CR I auditioned Had a 9871CS; have a 981CS; no regrets Comment from : j davis |
When I was shopping for a boxster/cayman, the 9872 generation got ruled out because of the PDK tuning, and the exhaust noise There's a sizable step up in both departments with the 981 (and a stiffer chassis to boot) While I noticed the steering differences, the trans tuning was the most noticeable part for me I liked the 9872, but I LOVE my 981 (S) Comment from : Nick |
Incredibly informative, thank you! Comment from : Ben Lowden |
Great video but in video ad is an automatic thumbs down 👎 Comment from : AR9fy |
idk scares the HELL out of me! A lot of cars blow an engine or transmission and it is just disheartening setbacka financial glitchbut when a Porsche suffers catastrophic failure of motor or idk? Put it this way if it's a really nice 25k mile example? it will likely be better to write the car off maybe part it out or donate it because you could easily spend the full value of the car repairing (ie REPLACTING) the a PDK or motormy understanding anyway I guess if you are someone buying new you won't worry about such because for one thing you have bucks and for the other you have a warranty and maybe an extended warranty,,,down the road is poor people finally end up owning em,,scared the whole time lol Comment from : Dougie Quick |
thx for the video , just got a 718 after you guys comment Comment from : Anskar Kong |
Ty for sharing and Yes there is absolutely 1 to many buttons mainly the Auto Start stop ;) Comment from : Piotr K |
I understand the 718 has been disappointing in sales I say that matches how disappointed buyers are with the decision to drop that beautiful, smooth flat 6 for the gravelly sounding flat 4 I totally agree that the 981 will hold its value better Comment from : Peter J |
718 GTS 25 with a simple APR tune is absolutely incredible and will hang with a GT4 718 engineering is simply a thing of beauty Comment from : John |
Disgusting all pdk transmissions you clearly don't understand what porsche is about Comment from : Bogdan Iorgulescu |
981 looks a bit like a panamera coupe 987 is best imo Comment from : THE BIGGEST OP |
since i've cited you, i report a comment i've done here as well:brbri've been listening to whining about the flat 4 of 718 for 5 years nowbri've seen countless YT videos where the host inevitably, always, continuously, repeat how the 718 is a spectacular car "but the engine sound" (the only possible exception seems to be Paul Schmucker in Everyday driver: "stop being babies")brnow, i came to realise one thingbryes the flat 4 doesn't sound like a flat 6brand that's why IT IS NOT a flat 6brdoes a flat 6 sounds better? maybe probablybrbut i can also argue that a flat 6 doesn't sound like a V8brwere all the whiners in line to buy the Porsche 928 because the 911 did sound like a rattling dishwasher with its aircooled engine missing 2 cylinders? i don't think so yet the V8 did sound greatbrand i can argue also that any V8 does not sound as great as a V10brare all the 911ers rushing to buy a Gallardo? is everybody crying how everything sounds worse than a Viper? is the LFA on the top of All Times Best sellers? still doesn't seems so brand i can go on saying that a V10 is kinda worse than a V12brand not to say about the flat 12brhow is not anyone bashing their heads about how dumb and senseless is life outside anything less than a Ferrari Testarossa?brare all those crying about the sound of the 718 with their asses on a Testarossa and i missed it? is anything worse than a Cavallino unworthy to be considered?brbrnow, the 718, especially with the 2,5L, is IN EVERY MEASURABLE WAY better than the previous versionbrmore power, more torque, less weight, less pollution, less componentsbrin some way, it's even better than the GTS with the flat 6: is lighter, simpler, more comfortable, costs significantly less, and consumes and pollutes lessbris a 6 cyllinder "better"? well, i guess a 250 GTO is even better Comment from : Fe - |
That bumper at 16:06 wasn't so happy Comment from : Filippo |
3 gens yet looks like a facelift of the same model Comment from : KP-48 |
I hate to break it to you but a Nice 987 Cayman R is more like 80-90k in the current market April 2022 ask me how I know Comment from : Mars Armory |
Just picked up a manual 981, also a Utah native, those are some choice roads, luckily I recognized most of them, thanks for sorting out my coming weekend plans! Comment from : Joshua deWaal |
Нормальный перевод не завезли ? Comment from : Андрей Севрук |
It doesn't sound like a true Subaru, because a true Subaru has unequal length headers Maybe it sounds like a brand new WRX, but not really Comment from : ThatDroneGuy |
The 987 is the ugliest porsche ever build Your kids could use the rear as a slide Comment from : Theytriedtoburyme |
Come find the performance? How about show me that performance seeing as how it’s a performance car lol Comment from : Reebs |
kindly advice, which 981 vs 718 is cheaper to maintenance over time Comment from : Live Better |
hate hate hate the 4 banger Comment from : Tony Torres |
@12:13, 12:14 and 12:15 you see the front end get progressively uglier Comment from : John Ward |
