I am a college freshman several weeks in my studies, and I was diagnosed with ADHD just over a decade ago I know ADHD is negatively affecting my performance, but I don't see any options My immigrant parents don't believe in ADHD treatment and they won't let me get a job because I "have to focus on [my] studies," so I don't have access to money, and I can't take on loans because I'm underagebrbrI'm going to see if my college offers anything to help, and if not, I might have to resort to asking a church for help, but any recommendations will help a lot Comment from : Salvo IX |

Thx so much I just got my diagnosis and have to think about wether i want to take meds or not So your video is very helpful Comment from : Sonea |

The tests are HORRIBLE!!! What do you mean 'never true' and not giving 'not true' option? Some questions have 10 different possible reasonings behind them Some questions ask what I don't notice - how the hell will I know if I DON'T notice? There's no logic behind so many questions and someone with ASD or ADHD should sit down and fix them all They frustrated me A LOT! Only 2 genders to chose from? You still use term 'Asperger's'??? Outdated Do better That's why people with these disorders are all gathering on TikTok and self-diagnosing We already have experts there who have the disorders themselves and experiences are being explained from OUR perspective Most say self-diagnosis is VALID Autistic people DON'T WANT to be autistic It's not a trend, it's just soooo much easier to live and connect to people online, that's why all of us seem so loud on social media We're silent in real life Neurotypicals can't really understand or, apparently, even test us correctly and it's extremely unnerving Comment from : ASMR Mess 🎵 |

I don't fixate on one topic unless rumination about what's wrong with me counts I have many hobbies but I'm too overwhelmed with life to do most of them I'm not impulsive, I think I can be very disciplined, to the point of embarrassing other people I fidget both when I'm bored and when I'm uncomfortable I hate routine but I actually function way worse without it I have sensory issues I don't get social cues even if I focus and analyse the situation, or replay the movie over and over again I don't know, most of both ASD and ADHD fit, but for both there is this one major thing that doesn't fit (discipline, routine, narrow interests, impulsivity) Comment from : monaami555 |

I self-identified as ASD at age 59 This was confirmed by a clinician at age 61 Between these two events, I already suspected ADiD was also an issue The clinician refrained from mentioning some sort of ADD as a comorbidity, saying that if we added ADD, a GP in my country of residence might mistakenly think he/she could 'cure' it with medication That rang a bell with me, since a psychiatrist had already run away with the notion that medication would work on what he supposed to be just SAD I followed his advice, but within only a few days had decided that antidepressants were not for me, and so I started in on very gradual withdrawal from the prescription I am fairly resigned to being some sort of neurodivergent, but duly note that reading more about these two conditions just adds to the diagnostic confusion So I will now just say that I am quite happy to continue to live in a grey area It's basically self-therapy alone for me, as I live in a country that denies any such thing for adults Some support and friendship wouldn't go amiss, but is also not availabĺe here I suppose I am so used to solitude that it no longer seems such a big deal I look after myself, much as I always have done Comment from : Chacha Cha |

I was recently diagnosed with ASD I’ve noticed that I have sensitivity to certain sounds since I was a kid When there is an uncomfortable sound I’ll hear, my body will jump and I get anxious, eg on the 4th of July my cats and I will be startled When the sound at 8:52 popped up I didn’t like it I make sure that my room is a quiet place with low lighting I have memories of being a kid coming back home from a party my mother would take my sister and I to where I had anxiety Anyway, this was a very helpful video Thank you Comment from : TheRightTriangle |

I'm often told I don't havs ASD because I can make the occasional eye contact and am able to communicate When really, I don't communicate properly, I'm just very talkative Comment from : Tj |
|
I wish they'd stop calling ASD a spectrum disorder It's not a spectrum disorder, a spectrum disorder would be something like the schizophrenia spectrum disorders where there are different diagnoses within it that are at least somewhat helpful when presented with a diagnosis ASD only has the Spectrum in it because there were a clustering of diagnoses that were obliterated to give a single diagnosis, but it inexplicably, and confusingly, leaves out ADHD and Schizoid Personality Disorder which are both in all likelihood also forms of autism It also doesn't include Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder as well, meaning that there are more non-ASD autism diagnoses than ones that are "within the spectrum" (The non-autistic Schizoids largely don't get that diagnosis these days as Schizotypal Personality Disorder and Avoidant Personality disorder got most of them to the point where the diagnosis is mostly inactive at this stage)brbrYes, there are a wide range of specific traits and experiences, but that's mostly because of just how sloppy the diagnostic criteria are There is no provision at all for folks with a more internalized presentation of the disorder Which does make some sense as brain scan technologies have come a long way and it was just assumed that the developmental process gets close enough sooner than it really does Comment from : SmallSpoonBrigade |

When i coped with anxiety and adhd in class by fidgeting and got in trouble because it distracted me or others I couldnt please my teachers So i debeloped perfectionism because every bit of small critism if not said in an encouraging way felt like someone stabbing my heart It felt like I was dying literally, that's how intense they emotion was Promoting me for a panic attack which I got attacked harder for in lack of emotional regulation and distracting other students by my entire presence and being I began to feel like I didn't fit and didn't belong in that group of students and unwelcome by my teacher specifically This trauma carries over into everyday life I'm trying to have God help me overcome my low self esteem Comment from : Taylor Brown |

Thank you so much for this video I'm in the middle of getting diagnosed and recognized as a ASD person and worker here, in France (and that's hard because a lot of psychiatrists that also are psychoanalysts "don't believe in the ASD diagnosis, are you sure your mother is treating you well ?", real quote for one of the therapists I saw as a kid), and this video is so precious As a woman, I've met on and off therapists since 2005 for repetitive and social anxiety, and it's only in 2022 that a therapist checked me for ASD after a post-phd-defense depressive episode I've always been one of those people who don't make any wave : smart, on top of the class, unable to know when to shut up (and therefore bullied for it), but also with socially acceptable oddities (I re-read religiously the whole Tolkien bibliography each evening again and again from my teenagers to nowadays, to only quote this little one) and discreet repetitive gestures (I move my heels up and down quickly each time I"m sitting or lying, it's pretty upsetting for everyone who notice, but it sooths me; The only time i'm not doing it is when I'm alone at home, because I do feel relaxed) All those things probably should have alerted every last professional we saw, but at that time, in France, psychoanalysis was still the dominant way of doing things, and women stil tend to stay less quickly diagnosed than men It's becoming better and better here, especially thanks to the local associations fighting against our old Freud and Lacan, fortunately brI do not qualify for ADHD, but the video was really interesting, because my best friend (who's diagnosed) and I are sharing a couple of symptoms, especially in social situations and phone-call situations (erk, those are the worse !) That's even over that we bonded over as bullied kids in middle school ! Comment from : Marielle D |

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that the way that we are living in society today is causing these problems in people? More is not better, louder is not better, faster is not better It just causes unnecessary stress and so people believe they have some type of disorder Comment from : M Laraine |

Thank you so much! As a teacher, I have found that another component that seems to impact a student’s behavior in similar ways is a response to trauma Comment from : Anneliese Ceci |

Insanely good video One thing I would recommend doing differently: Most therapists in germany are not trained in screening for asd and can subconciously steer away from diagnosing you without doing it on purpose Specialized therapists or psychiatrists are very hard to come by If you have strong indicators you might be on the spectrum, don't give up too easilybrbrAlso, some people over 30 will have instilled such strong coping mechanisms that they can gaslight themselves into thinking they're "just different" because they were told that their whole life For example, if you have virtually no friends because "you just have no time" or "just didn't work out" those are typical answers I get from people who are most likely on the spectrum but won't entertain the thought because it makes them insecure This will keep them from getting proper help and improve their lives and also raise their life expectancy (afaik)brbrHave a good one Comment from : Haui111 |

Yeah I think we both Comment from : HatzBatz System |

I have since formative years been blessed with a very vivid inner world, visually and sound I’ve always wondered why I’ve struggled to stay attentive socially, if I do I get stimulated to bordering on outburst But here’s the thing, I’ve always played music in my mind and checking out constantly In school I failed all lesson bar art which I excelled at Can’t read people emotionally upfront, I a lot of the time project a sitcom like script to their true motives When people emote I find itbrFalse or acted Anxiously day dreaming and dissociating has been my life Maybe I need to get checked out! Been in and out of therapy forever and always carrying a few addictions Comment from : barry pickford |
|
Dr Marks, it is amazing how you seem to do videos on exactly the questions I'm asking myself I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type) at age 55 because I never had behaviour problems at school I sought diagnosis because of your videos, so thank you! But now, I've been reading a book by a comedian who was diagnosed with Autism later in life, and many of her symptoms (problems reading social cues, stimming when nervous, finding certain noises upsetting, hyperfocus) sound like me too And yet, other of her symptoms sound nothing like me Thank you for explaining how people with ADHD sometimes have these features of ASD without being Autistic And how pathology-treating healthcare ignores our symptoms unless they are profoundly affecting daily life I will discuss this with my ADHD therapist so I can understand more Thanks again for putting me (and so many people) on the right path Comment from : Kass McGann |
|
This is one of the best descriptions and concise descriptions of ADD, ADHD , and ASD that I have heard As someone who has ADD, thank you! brAlso, I can tell that you are a great therapist Keep on going with your gifting! Comment from : Kristine Pfeil |

I definitely feel like most doctors don't recognize asd in females as easily My daughter has adhd with learning disabilities and melt downs and sensory issues shes now 16 and is been rough I truly believe she has asd but they always say its adhd and anxiety This doctor started talking to me about a patient of hers who was low functioning autism and she was supposed to be a specialist This was a few yrs ago We have tried different meds, but not much helps More needs done for girls, at least in our area Comment from : NIKI122 |

I love you Dr Tracy Marks I hope you know you saved my life Comment from : Ghassan Issa |

Hi I'm 14 and I don't know how to control my Comment from : J ROBINSON |
|
What can we do to help those with both ASD and ADHD, to get both diagnosis at a younger age or at least have ASD to even be considered instead of writing it all off as just a ADHD person who simply isnt trying ? brbrBecause that's why I was treated, I was here is adhd and never it as anything more but i knew there WAS more i thought i was just crazy like what is wrong with me my whole family has adhd but i got my asd from my dad who split after fertilization so all i was around was adhd and i just didn't fit and i didn't understand i had one label why wouldn't it cover all of me Comment from : MayYourWhishes |

I don’t understand my experience with being diagnosed because all my life I was diagnosed with ADHD, but now that I’m 22 I was recently diagnosed with autism? Some of it makes sense but I don’t understand why no one considered it before…? It kind of makes me sad because I’m diagnosed with other stuff and my mindset of it is that I just want to be normal and not looked at as having alot of problems It’s hard working because I feel like my bosses and coworkers think I’m stupid or slow I have a hard time forming relationships with people (making friends or finding a partner) because I feel like I can’t relate to others (I don’t understand some of the things they do or why their interested in stuff) I’ve tried to change myself to fit in when I was in school but I gave up on it because I was still being bullied and I didn’t like it (I didn’t understand why people were into some of that stuff when I was still into cartoons and playing with toys) I was also diagnosed with some kind of “mental delay” he said ages 13-16? I don’t understand that either? Lol Comment from : Cc Valencia |
|
I just did the ASD and ADHD screens… says I’m in range of Asperger’s and also for ADHD which is just perfect… Another thing to speak to a therapist about Comment from : Spiritual Amethyst |

Got diagnosed for inattentive ADHD recently and I met the criteria for an ASD diagnosis so I’m just waiting because the waiting times are SUPER high Comment from : A regular person |
|
You are brilliant at what you do, you come across intelligent, sometimes a bit serious, but very comforting, in the sense that you're confident in what you're saying, but there's a kindness there behind the professional face, I see bloopers 😃 I could be wrong but I keep wanting to, lalalalaaa and shake it off 🤷♀️🤪🤭 maybe it's just what I would do in this situation, either way, thank you 🙂 Comment from : Megs |
|
I took your test, I scored 38 out of 50 my husband and I are actually on a waiting list at the moment, testing is about $600 I believe, but well worth it Thank you for your time Comment from : Lavender |

I have ADHD and close friends with autism have asked if I also have autism I have been recently learning that symptoms can overlap brbrWhen it comes to communication I’m not bothered at all, and enjoy being around people a lot Sarcasm is my personality, haha… Comment from : Portia Wieland |
|
I don’t know why anyone would ask this question It’s not like the two are similar They don’t even manifest to an outside observer in a similar way ADD/ADHD-issues focusing because they get distracted easily Autism-input overload Depends on how bad it is but in mild to medium cases it will mean that they will want to focus solely on one thing at a time and can sometimes have a tendency to get upset when they are not the one initiating a situation even as simple as a conversation or hearing noise Very mild cases simply have difficulty forming new relationships but are not incapable Extreme cases are not capable of having much of a life at all, sometimes not even having the ability to learn language br brIf your child has one it’s easy to tell which one Even if you didn’t know what each disease was a quick google search would let you know and you could easily tell the difference If you ask me, it much harder to diagnose add Comment from : Quitt |
|
This explains a lot I was always getting Cs and Ds in class, not because I wasn't understanding the material, but because I couldn't pay attention long enough to absorb the knowledge My parents put me in tutoring, but the teacher there said I wasn't being challenged enough I was diagnosed with ADHD at 25 I dropped out of College, failed grade 10 math (attention issues), and was just swept under the rug because I was 'lazy' I was also not allowed anti-depressants, despite being suicidally depressed because my mother thought that it would be too damaging to a teenage brain As if the attempts weren't damaging Comment from : Ferayn Ironmane |
