When you are autistic, you never forget the first time:br- You had a meltdown and an adult told you to 'just stop doing that'br- You were told 'why can't you just be normal'br- You read an article about a parent killing their autistic child and the comments being sympathetic to the parentbr- You go to one of these clinics or even the more 'tame' therapy sessions and feel like a criminalbr- You realise you have been dehumanised for a lot of your life

I'm autistic long story short: aba is abCse autism is not a disorder, we're part or nature ppl just can't handle our intelligence and bright personality so they put us down you can't condition autism away xD all they remember from this is to mask in front of you more and trust you even less the only thing these poor autistics learn from ABA is how stupid neurotypicals really are this topic is madly sad most ppl have no idea what autism is, but talk about it as if they have it guess what?? a neurotypical CAN'T understand autism, and they can't teach autistics about autism, it's the other way around

As somebody with autism, I find it absolutely shocking that the Treetops teacher at 18:15 even suggested that a child could be cured of autism Autism is a lifelong condition, and Jack and Jeremiah, while their autism-related difficulties may increase or decrease as they get older, they will remain autistic for the rest of their lives, and nothing will change that
Comment from : Paul Lennon [not his real name]

Melissa
I found it very difficult to watch these videos, trying to train kids like animals and being completely misunderstood, it's so sad that the parents really want to do the best for their kids but the organizations they're putting their trust in sees their child as something to be fixed, traumatizing them instead They don't even understand the children, their behaviors aren't "enslaving them", what enslaves them is the fact that they aren't understood, not respected for the way they process the world around them, ignoring their needs and restricting them of their own coping skills

Wow after seeing this program i cant believe what a total narcissistic airhead guy who think he can fix something that is clearly not broken but just different and i think nba is just so evil and torture those poor kids it should diffenately be shut down after my opinion there are much better ways to help autistic people to learn than what that garbage their teaching is about 😱😡🤮😤
Comment from : Sally Jørgensen

george sumner
This documentary disturbs me every time This documentary focuses on the perceived problem, but the dramatic irony is that the people with the real problems, don’t know they have a problem This isn’t a documentary about ABA It’s a documentary about the horrors committed by Neurotypicals and their inability to cope with, accommodate and accept difference Let alone understand it What is needed for true understanding is a major paradigm shift It starts with Neurotypicals having some self awareness and humility, stepping out of the box and realising that though Autistics are different, is the Neurotypical way the right and only way and they must ask themselves is it us with the problem? Only they can figure that out, but I definitely know the answer Neurotypicals make their problems others problem It’s like a forced tribal conditioning that they force people through to make themselves feel comfortable and to make their lives easier This is another irony They are VERY rigid and extremely selfish Someone needs to hold a mirror up to them and expose their vulnerabilities They better NOT cry, or ask us to stop, just as Gunner says Gunner doesn’t strike me as a man who likes being told what to do He can dish it out, but can he take it? He doesn’t appear Autistic, why don’t we make him more Autistic as he is broken and his Neurotypicalism isn’t normal
Comment from : george sumner

ABA, in my opinion, will always be about making parents feel better not the child I myself am autistic but I've worked with other autistic children and adults who have more needs Photo books, typing, sign language ect Are all communication tools that so many people simply refuse to learn to help a child and it drives me nuts Your kid doesn't speak to you with words? Follow how they communicate so that they can speak to you! It's your responsibility as a parent and adult! Anyone who doesn't make an effort to learn how to speak to their child is a bad parent and lazy in my opinion
Comment from : Hrmm

Masking can raise your cortisol levels, can make you have difficults to know who you are without the mask I would never ever do this to my kids I have mask my whoke life and since I started unmask my imunity got better, my stress got better, my depression and anxiety were gonebrPlease, don't repress what doesn't harm themselfs or others just to look "typical" We are all enough We are all amazing Nobody needs to change themselves to please society Those who are agressive are in a place not friendly to them Control the Light, control the noise, control the smell and textures Buid comunication and listen their opinions Safe stims should be encouraged It balances ourselves Look in the eyes is painful I am 34 years old, a teacher, mother, and ex-wife who get along well with her ex, a caring daughter and a loyal friend But don't make eye contact with me Don't touch me Don't make me stay where I feeld bad or eat what I don't know I am really upset in those cases, shut down and take days to cope
Comment from : Amanda Ferrareli

Evie
interesting how the boy has tics now You can't get rid of autism I hope he lives a healthy life and negotiates masking ok without compromising his mental health I hated how his parents told him he was 'sick' as a child
Comment from : Evie

Emma O Connell
In reality we all have to conform to social norms as we grow up, and most parents have to resort to rewards and punishments in order to help their child to behave in a socially acceptable manner ABA is just an extension of that
Comment from : Emma O Connell

I don't understand how you can tell a child that he needs to be fixed I think some tools of ABA could be used for good things But no therapy should force a child to mask Therapy should only be used to stop harming behavior, help them to communicate in a way they choose (verbal, signs, computer,) so they can communicate their needs, or meeting their basic needs Not for making a child neurotypical! If an autistic child is older and wants to learn to mask it's their choice But forcing children to be neurotypical is so cruel and wrong Stimming should'nt be forbidden A child can communicate without eye contact I don't think it's generally wrong to encourage communicating, teaching social cues, but not like this You can support a child to manage (not hide!) emotions, social situations, sensory issues and stress without forcing them to be neurotypical The goal should be to help the child not wanting the child to play a role the society may seems fit As long as the behavior doesn't harm the child or others, I don't see a valid reason to make the child stop
Comment from : Alina S

BATMOM CHANNEL
Aba can be positive or negative and it Varys on each childbut we need more funding to continue research and such (support workers) to have the child flourish But this comes with a price mental health on the worker and child are challenged and most support workers leave the field after two years!

I guess, "Jack" needs someone who helps figuring out ist food problems, rather than an ABA "practicioner" One can't blame his mom, she just wants the best for him Bur she should understand that maybe it's OK if she can't go to a ("normal") restaurant, eating the foods being served there
Comment from : Max Mustermann

I am related to Jack and his mum , I think she is an amazing mum , and has done a great job with him he is a loving , caring , kind boy , knows his manners Anyone who thinks it’s ok to go on here and make negative comments , needs to step back and look at themselves ! You have no idea how hard it is for the parents

kaleidoscyan
it is literally a NEUROLOGIGAL DIFFERENCE Autism can not be cured and it's never been cured ever What this "fixing" is is just teaching the child Masking The way they think will not change The way they ARE will not change They will learn to hide themselves from the outside, which especially at this young age can cause severe trauma and is literally life threatening WE DO NOT NEED A CURE We don't want to behave the way others want us to We want to live as ourselves, not machines formed by those who claim to love us

Parent training is fundamental Not medications or torture therapies Parents must learn that looking at other kids and wanting their own kids to behave like them will not change a thing Never will be that way but as parents we can learn to live with it

Abunai Akane
A lot of the ABA they show with the older videos is so different from the ABA I do with my clients I can totally understand why so many people had bad experiences with it that left lasting negative effects The ABA I do is a lot more focused on getting to know the individual, what they like, what they respond best to, how to work together towards goals that make their lives more comfortable and fun Where I work we absolutely never withhold their lunches or washroom breaks and if they need time to just cool off or breathe or switch activities we give them that None of this yelling "no" at them and telling them to stand in a corner when they miss a target Just "good try/almost! Let's try again!" No wonder so many kids historically have had a rough time with it

I read some comments Also negative ones about the ABA method and experiences of people that had it I think it is important that these kids learn to communicate to some level, but not by punishment Learning to express their needs for food, when they are thirsty or having pain for instance If that is possible it might reduce anxiety Make them happier Learning to eat a more balanced diet for instance is important part of life Breaking through unhealthy behavior Or for instance repetitive movements that are hurtful for themselves or hurtful behavior to caretakers But not hurtful repetitive moves or behavior that reduces anxiety why should you change that I do not believe you should press them to what we believe as a normal behavior Wanting them to become a person they are not I do not think you should for instance thrive for going out eating to a restaurant What is the purpose of that And probably very harmful I hope there will be good research of what is good for them And I do believe believe there are differences in the autistic spectrum that will ask for different approaches

I am an artistic adult 53 years old I work in the school system for 33 years with autistic children I mentor them ABA is just disgusting for autistic people please stop doing this to your children who decided which behaviour is acceptable the behaviours that you see from your autistic children They are just self regulating themselves when they have shut downs or meltdowns they have no control over this is their brains way of protecting themselves it’s kind of like going through a seizure when I have a shut down sometimes I can’t see or hear you if you touch me or bug me even more prolong is it this so-called ABA that’s supposed to help autistic children ends up hurting them even more there are some artistic children that I’ve gotten PTSD Because of the way ABS abuses are mental and physical health conveying to a child in a deep emotional way that they are not excepted or the way they are it’s not good that they need to be fixed most of my friends of committed suicide because of this type of behaviour and attitude from Nuro typical people that are just Nuro typically ignorant and do not understand the atypical mind so please do not put your autistic children through ABA which has nothing to do with helping autistic people we never had a voice they never asked and autistic person what is really happening we see and perceive the world differently we can get overloaded from our surroundings understanding and excepting artistic people for who they are is the beginning Of loving your children for who they are may God help the autistic community from the Nuro typical ignorant

After reading everyones comments that are slagging off aba because they had bad experiences with a brutal form of it, it doesnt give me much confidence to say that I beleive in this method To clarify, the softer more contemporary version shown in the programme of course It seems to work very well for the severely disabled, but not mild forms like asperges for example and I approve of it in those situations I feel anyone able to cognitively comment on this video saying they had a bad experience with it, honestly, I beleive you because it shouldn't be used on anyone other than the severely autistic and in majority of cases those individuals wouldnt be able to comment on here if that was the case its shouldn't be treated as if its black and white As if there is 'Normal' education and 'aba' education, no There are greys and browns and all sorts of other ways that humans with all diffrent cognitive levels, IQs and abilities learn at You wouldnt give lithium thats been seen to help bipolar disorder to someone with mild depression because ur classing it all as a mental illness, or put a plaster over a gash in your arm because it works for a scratch and they are both a rip in the skin seriously? Dont knock this form of learning just because your a bird in water, this works well if your a fish I know someone who lets her child run across roads because she says when she holds their hand it makes them cry, and crying means ur doing something wrong to your child in her opinion Clearly, ridiculous as your putting their safety at risk which is neglect and thats a non intentional form of abuse Just like any other child (autistic or not) you need to "train" them to some extent so they can function and stay alive Attempting Language, toilet use, or just paying attention can make a huge difference in these kids quality of life Showing THEM how to SHOW people what THEY want is so important for their future, their comfort and consent My partners nephew doesnt get a consequence when hes naughty He has learned that any verbal threat is never seen through, so he doesnt pay attention to their requests This has made teaching difficult, as they ask him to sit down with them and he doesnt care Kids want to play with toys not sit being shown numbers, its boring However this is crucial to his development so that he learns maths! You will struggle more than people who know maths, and you had the mental capability to learn it aswell, its just nobody helped you learn Its a very similar story with these children Even if they show distress from being asked to sit down and try to focus on their lesson, its crucial they get through it so that they can learn asmuch as they possibly can Not everyone is going to learn every subject either My cousin is similar to Patience's son in regards to his abilities, unable to use language He can however say the first 2 letters of things now! 'SK' means school, 'KS' means kiss and 'BA' means bye Without his school getting him to repeat things over and over, he now has some language which has helped him to ask for things Before he would cry or scream because he couldnt be helped do what he wanted to do Now he can give indications to what things, there is now a form of communication so he doesnt get upset anymore They got him to learn photos of places to associate where he is going that day He is now putting the pictures on the board himself to tell his mum where he wants to go Amusingly, once his mum found that he had taken the photo of 'school' off and put the photo of 'home' up, and when she went to see if he had put his uniform on in his room (also been taught to dress himself, even if scruffy and his mum has to neaten him), he had thrown the clothes back in the wardrobe haha Making it very clear that like all kids, he wanted to skip school today haha! My cousin and the family is so much calmer now they have this "training" I think it should have huge funding, not only for more jobs with teacher training, but especially to help poor families who cant cope alone and need guidance like the mum with the son who wouldnt try new foods etc I agree that guy who said "fix them" had a messed up view of autism and clearly had an ego as other commenters said Autism isnt a broken radio, its just the people are on a diffrent frequency, and thats ok We just have to try our best to help them to learn asmuch as possible so they can have a better quality of life and be happy

So difficult, my grandson was diagnosed as Aspergers, now called on the autistic scale but high functioning, so I know it is different brHe went to mainstream schools, and struggled in the early years because of lack of structurebrThe further up the school went the better he did brHe has just finished his A Levels and is on his way to unibrHe will be the first one to say he has traits that look like OCD, certain things that have to be done in a certain way at a certain timebrBut when at school he was given a lot of support but had to follow the norms I think that was good for him, much better than being allowed to be different He was just expected to fit inbrWe were laughing a few weeks ago that he will always have his eccentric ways, but so do ibrThere is nothing wrong with different but it makes life so much easier if you can adaptbrI think ABA sounds excellent for helping autistic children to fit in it they can

I remember in Primary School some of the other pupil with things like Autism, Aspergers and Down Syndrome etc, whenever they had meltdowns/tantrums, some of the teachers would chastise them and put them in the library to "cool down" obviously as a kid me and a lot of the other kids were confused by it and we were just told "_i__/i is being naughty and needs to cool off" I feel so bad for not understanding at the time

Autism is something that cannot be cured ever Those that do appear fixed are masking and are more able to follow social situations largely due to social scripts which are a great help but the amount of stress in day to day life of coping in this world can be extremely hard for them and self harm and suicide rates are higher Other people with autism may just retreat from the real world and become shut ins as adults Autism is such a devastating disorder and needs a lot of understanding from everyone

I am not diagnosed with ASD, but I have a feeling I'm neurodivergent ever since I saw the first few clips of ABA therapy I'm completely shocked I would go absolutely insane if I had to do this for even one hour a day, and some of these kids go through this for 40 hours a week I already feel completely overwhelmed just by watching this Do they not care at all how this must be for the children? it's all about how hard this is for the parents, but nobody cares about how hard this is for the kids when the mother said that she came very close to a meltdown because her child kept having meltdowns, I was like "yes? and how do you think your child is feeling?" of course it's hard for a parent when their child is having meltdowns, but their suffering isn't less important than yours just because you're the parent
