Ben Morris
I learning Mandarin pinyin as part of my TCMP program what I'm struggling with currently is mastering the tones I've also dedicated my self to learn outside of my class using Duolingo mostly to learn the characters because I want to be able to use(read, write) and speak Mandarin in my personal and professional life

You will not likely learn competent Mandarin in six months Having a "pleasant smile" and med school background helps on YouTube, but not in terms of info retention The tonal system and vast number of word groupings and concepts are not readily available to English speakers, besides "where is the?" "how is the?" "tell me about?" "have a nice day" With 50-85k characters, can you imagine any kind of fluent immersion in this time? More like six years minimum
