I’m thinking to buy seiko 5 as my first mechanical watch, should I buy it or is there anyother alternative mechanical watch in the same range? Comment from : n |
I have a winder which can handle 4 watches at a time You should know that a winder does not keep the watch keeping time; it just keeps it lubricated Comment from : Jeff Hacker |

If a Rolex 40mm Explorer would drop out of the sky i would pick it up and wear it every day, service it when ever needed say like once every 5 years or so or when needed Buuut since thats not very likely going to happen im happy to switch up every few days or weeks or whenever i like my humble battery run watches Throw one in drawer use another for few weeks take back the one from the drawer it might have advanced few seconds but unless you are in command of artillery team responsible of synchronized howitzer strikes it dosent matter So imo quarz watches are from purely pragmatic reasons a better choice and they last decades too with just a battery change but automatic's just have that cool factor over quartz, but if you own multiple watches and like to switch up its kind of an hassle Comment from : Oozy9Millimeetah |

Iv got a oris artilier world timer automatic think it's 2003 year but I bought it in 2007 in its original box pappers and spear links not worn it for years bracelet is in nice condition too 7581 model think sell it see wat its worth good video Comment from : Sergio Notarpippo |

My great uncle has terminal Cancerand last week he gave me a Seiko automatic He bought it in 1968 and the only change is the strap original was leather I took it to a jewelry shop and he was straight in showing me cash offering £400 I was no not for sale kinetic watches are so great the way they work I know it's platinum am getting a magnifying glass tomorrow to get the serial numbers of the back and hall marks etc someone could offer me a billion £ I will never sell it it's not obvious that it's worth way more than £400 it hasn't got all the bells and whistles on it it's a simple crisp but discreet watch and I really love it Wishing you happyness and good health from Marcus Ireland 🇮🇪 and London England 🇬🇧⌚ps because I would not sell the jewelry shop owner would not tell me the price I saw one like it on the net and it was £10,000! So tomorrow I will find out how much to insure it for even if it was a £5 watch I would still treasure it it's sentimental value is worth more than any amount of money for me Comment from : norseblood9999 |

(Sept 2023) - Hi Dave, thanks for this very informative video I have a mix of quartz and automatic watches For quartz, I tend to go with watches like Casios with a 10 year battery life or solar powered, so I don’t need to change the battery too often But I find my automatics I have more of a fashion good looking appearance, especially if I wear a suit So I will gladly spend three minutes to make sure it’s set before I go out to a special occasion Comment from : Dave Boyer |
If you wear more than one watch, mechanical watches are a major headache Yes, i have purchased watch winders -- just another hassle I buy only battery-powered watches and a few simple tools to replace the cell every year or two Comment from : JackBN |
My Seiko 5 is about 20 years old now and still running good with accurate time Comment from : ZoomZoom |
100 agree Comment from : Predrag Popovic |
that moment you go buy 5 vintage mechanical automatic watches and only now saw this -_- Comment from : Hariesh |
For #4, only an issue if you have more watches than you need Comment from : MegaThucydides |
Some watches need more service if they are not worn, other need more service if they are Some movements need more frequent service than others I have a box of watches hat need service that may just stay in the box until I find a watchmaker I run across as I am not really looking to service 6+ watches Comment from : BH |
Talking about dropping the watch is important If you accidentally drop a mechanical or automatic watch, it's essential to have it inspected In my experience, whenever I've accidentally dropped an automatic watch, the movement has been affected Even if you notice it's still keeping accurate time, a timegrapher test might reveal hidden damage Comment from : Alex |
Like a steam engine an automatic watch has a soul of its own Comment from : M R |

Is watch flipping a viable source of income? Comment from : István Knoll |
in regards of maintenance i completely agree, i am a budget watch guy, so i started buying watchmaking tools to service my own stuff because there is no other way to afford or trust anyone they will do a good job with my cheap watches, all i need now is an ultrasonic machine, a spring winder, and a cristal pusher, the oils are gonna be probably the most expensive part probably, hopefully one day people will trust me their watches for a very affordable price same way i am trusted with building gaming PCs ( i am no more than an enthusiast on any of those fields but i grew the son of a mechanic so i am very aquatinted with fiddling with screws and fragile parts) Comment from : Terratenientes algo |
Thanks for the video I have added a single hand wound watch (Merkur Pierre Paulin) to my collection and recently added an automatic (Shirahama Neo Tokyo) The rest are all either quartz or solar powered Comment from : tablameister |
Thank you! Very informative Comment from : tabrez pasha |
I just wind mine whenever I wear it It's like a ritual using a winder significantly reduce the spring longevity anyway But I never get one with dates/days Comment from : Samuel Jung |
Dad bought me a Seiko 5 automatic before getting into high school The watch is 14 years with me, but I stopped using it about 8years into being worn since it doesn't store much energy as it used to Now that's I've started to have interest in watches I am planning to get this watch serviced It's terrible now because it runs like +8 seconds every minute, but this watch means a lot to me! Comment from : Cyrrus Garcia |
Thank you so much for this I just bought two mechanical watches without knowing about the maintenance and function and kept getting fluster when they’d stop movement after a bit Comment from : Christian Lynch |
Can you please suggest me a mechanical watch, which does not have a date icon, worth the price, but decent, stainless steel with saphire glass Mostly for suits, should have a stainless steel strap, 100m water resistance Thank you in advance! Comment from : András Palatinus |
Mine I gave to somebody because I need to wear it every day if not the watch will stop So troublesome Comment from : pang chung |
Thanks Comment from : ASHUTOSH KUMAR |
I'm looking for an automatic watch! If I buy one and put it away for a few years will it still work like new? Thanks! Comment from : Howard Hoover |
My psycho five is over 20 years old and still going strong No maintenance Keeps great time Better than any Rolex I just purchased the Bulova hack and it seems to be doing very well so far Comment from : Dr Steven Penny, MD |
Once I got the Radio Sync Seiko's that literally give you the absolute perfect time and runs in solarI no longer need a watch unless it's for style I'm a time nut so I would have to set my watch to the second twice a day Literally you buy the Seiko Coutura and that's it Nothing more No winding, no checking When the watch says it's 3;15pm, it's 3:15pm Period Comment from : Chad Czternastek |
If you want a forever watch you probably need to get something with a common midrange workhorse movement like a 2824 Otherwise, it's can get expensive Even a Seiko 6r may be just replaced when service is needed Good way to see if a movement is serviceable u can check to see if there are service part readily availability Comment from : Harry Cee |
You had me going for a minute! I thought you were serious at first You should add some comedic sound effects or something so people know you're joking Comment from : Frosty Jim |
Personally, I’m a quartz guy You can’t beat the accuracy and the convenience factor Plus, there are some stunning quartz pieces out there that rival or outclass even the most beautiful mechanical watches Comment from : SpinCycle |
Ive got a problem with my automatic watch first of all lets say thats a fancy gold color rolex president chineese replica i know its what it isbrBut i wonder how can this happendbrWhen i turn the crown to set the time if i put the hour dial in 3 oclock sharp the minute hand stands in the middle between the 11 and 12 oclock Never see that i wonder if its easy to solve this problem Comment from : VASCO VENÂNCIO |
very informative Comment from : KEVIN COMIA |
I love Seikos because of the vaiety but understand that they have a 5 to 10 year lifespan I stopped collecting older (1930 -1980) OMEGAs, ZENITHs and ZODIACs when the price of watchmaking got too expensive Counterfits are fun, if you know it's a counterfit, and usually work well for two years $30 dollar TIMEXs are a gteat deal Digital watches tend to slowly shift inside their cases until the buttons don't work and the batteries die But again, they are generally worth $30 or so So; Looks, Quality, Durability, and Price are all things to choose from Resale value is also a consideration for watches priced over $500 Comment from : Thomas Esau |

Things we don't actually knew it until this video explains everything but nevertheless it's the experience of tactile moments with your own timepiece that matters By: Lord Sir Noel M Comment from : Lord Sir Noel Manchester |

Having owned mechanical watches from Omega, Longines, etc, I can vouch for the fact that the benefits far outweigh the gripes Of course, a simple quartz or a digital watch can tell the time, but is it the same as using a mechanical watch? I think not! Mechanical watches allow you to slow down and enjoy the process of winding the watch and hearing sound of the movement once it’s wound It’s like being in love, you got to invest time and be involved Just like the experience of using a ball point pen is quite different from using a fountain pen The latter demands your time and attention, which are scarce in this world of instant gratification and disposable stuff Mechanical watches are not for everyone But those who own and cherish them know their value Thanks for your perspective Comment from : Ajay Verma |
#GWSRolexCom offers incredible replicas at unbeatable prices I purchased a Yacht-Master for $310, paid with Mastercard, and it arrived within 7 days The level of accuracy is impressive! Comment from : VİP_JOZEF |
#GWSRolexCom's replicas are the best-kept secret in the watch community Don't break the bank on an original when you can get an amazing $200 alternative that's practically indistinguishable! Comment from : oyun kralı |
My philosophy is part of the joy of an automatic is shaking it a few times & playing with the crown bringing it back from its slumber and synchronizing it with your cellphone You come out looking stylish 😉 I wear it only for special occasions or on the weekend, never for work But while at work, if i wanna know the time i just look at my cellphone The automatic watch for me is only to dress up Comment from : A Alzate |
Just bought my first Swiss Watch, a Tissot I love this interaction, the need to take care of the watch Great info! Comment from : lt_hk |
bro complaining about maintaining 200$ watch :D Comment from : Ruiwc25 |
I'm having this exact debate with Tissot PRX There's a 300 difference I guess if I can't decide I'll go with the cheaper option I really like the texture of the face on the automatic tho 😢 Comment from : Ricardo Arroyo |
If you plan to spend less than about $350 for a self winding mechanical watch, I recommend looking for one with a Seiko NH-35 or NH-36 movement They are pretty accurate When years go by and they need service you can buy a new movement for around $35 give or take If you are mechanically inclined, you can buy the tools to remove the back, hands, and dial and replace it yourself Comment from : Bruce Coleman |
what about tissot prx powermatic 80? Comment from : sodiq |
I'm torn between 2 automatics at this time A nice Tissot in rose gold for about $280, and a Bulova that's beautiful for about $400 Comment from : Genghis Khan |

I just got that same seiko 5 as you for my graduation I know it is not some fancy watch, but I really just love the way it looks and the idea of a watch that just runs on its own I plan on keeping it forever, and at least I will be able to remember when to service it since it was gifted to me during a very memorable occasion Comment from : Jayden Visnaw |
$200 heirloom 😂 Comment from : Jake Nasz |
Seiko 5 owner here, too Bought mine a decade ago when 5s were roughly $50 on Amazon My time loss for the first five years fluctuated between 30 seconds to two minutes a day I shipped my watch to Seiko Service & Repair in NJ for a tune-up mid-pandemic for roughly $120 Service was fast, responsive and so was my watch! It came back spot on accurate I'm now back to a two-minute-a-day loss Might be time for new servicing Thanks for the video! Comment from : Steve |

Good old 7S26 Comment from : Jason Chatham |
I got a Seiko 5 two Christmas' ago and it lasted just over 1 year before it wouldn't keep good time (lost 10 minutes a day) and would randomly stop running I loved the idea of a mechanical watch and really would like to have one that can handle more than a desk job usage but I just can't justify spending several hundred dollars on a watch that I have to take off every time I work If you do a physical job, or even mow your grass a mechanical watch might not be a good option for you Comment from : David Morris |
Just buy SEIKO 5 you got no problem can last you 20-30 years Comment from : flaretv |
Had to laugh at that, I bought my first mechanical about 6 years ago and now it's losing minutes perday and needs a service which I was told will cost 150 excluding any replacement parts I only paid 200 for it I like the watch but is it really worth it I'm not sure Comment from : Danni Catzer |
My father and grandfather gave me hand me down Seiko 5 watches when I was younger but it bugged me no end that it would lose like 1 minute or more a month even after I serviced it So when I bought my own watch I got a solar watch which lasted 12 years before the crystal developed a small leak It’s not worth me getting it repaired Better off getting a new watch Comment from : iggytse |
Every morning, I set my Longines automatic so it's part of the joy of owning it in my opinion Comment from : Heinsy |

This is one of those those things I never thought I'm going to need and I'm glad I stumbled across this because I was planning to get my first mechanical watch, I just can't resist that certain allure it has Thanks a whole lot Comment from : ariel candoleta |
I have a Seiko 5 Had it about 12yrs & have worn it almost everyday during that time It has never been serviced & loses about a minute over a couple of weeks I love it! Comment from : Steven Broughton |
Number one, they're not very good at keeping accurate time so if your primary need for a watch is to actually know what time it is, get a quartz Comment from : L |
