Being new to wild camping I’m really interested in your advice on 2-3 person tent As I have my eldest son camping with me I’ve got a Berghaus cairngorm 3 But it’s heavy What lighter options provide similar space and quality? Comment from : Richard Handley |
great video, the only tent I miss (as European) is the decathlon ultra light 1p/2p tents it's really hard to find a reason for my why one should spend e g 300-500€ for brand tents like vango, vaude, big Agnes, etc Comment from : Conan der Barbar |
The Helium UL2 is around for £240 - lots more room than the 1 and only a 200g weight penalty A proper tent for reasonable money I'm still thinking of the Lanshan 2 standard, but at 6ft I wonder about the inner on my face when lying down I have the Helium now so will see how that goes but, for me, it would be nice to have a little more height inside Comment from : Philip771 |
Did you not think of putting the names down and even a link for the tents your talking about Comment from : Dark Star |
some captions with the model names had taking the production next level! as a non native its hard to pick up the model names Comment from : Peter Pagh |
I have a Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 Solution dyed tent, one of the lightest and highest regarded ultralight tents on the market,I’ve never heard you mention them, not a fan I presume🤔 Comment from : Captain 73 |
I have the first tent shown, and the only problems that there are is that its annoying to put up in the rain, and its short Personally im pretty young and only like 5'5 so its all fine for me, but anybody taller or wider will definitely struggle Its very water proof, as long as you put it up before it rains as it is inner sheet first, as the poles are on the inner sheet Comment from : Kaycie-may Coxon |
I have the Vango helium! Lasted me MANY years lots of adventures :) thanks for the summary very useful, the tent ripped last week and looking for a new one :) already rebought the fly after a curious cow incident Inner beyond repair too now But it was used A LOT Thoroughly recommend!!! Going to try Lanshan now :) Comment from : E |
The Phoxx 1v2 is a great tent, I bought one last year (sadly there weren’t many deals at the time) managed to grab it for £80! It’s been put to work and it’s done great, quick and easy set up/takedown, I’m 6’4 and it’s a good enough tent for what you need! brbrI usually have a tarp set up for an area to sit if it’s wet out so I don’t need to worry about trying to sit up in the tent (it’s difficult unless you’re 5’7 and under), there isn’t s crazy amount of foot room but again it does the job it can fit a mat in with no problem! Perfect budget tent, use it for backpacking and for motorcycle camping and it hasn’t let me down yet it’s one of the two good tents I have Comment from : Brancr |
I have now watched this video about 4 times I'm trying to decide on my first tent It's impossible 🤣 but this video is very very helpful Thanks ☺️ Comment from : Lilith Castle |
Paul you missed most of my tent collection br1) Budget, for all seasons and tested in wind tunnel for Hurricane winds, the nordisk svalbard 1 si Great quality brbr2) Expensive, the fallkniven abisko lite 1 Incredible tent but expensive but incredible featuresbrbr 3) Middle priced the Scarp 1 tent is incredible size for tall people and will take any weather Scotland can throw at it Needs order from USA Important change applybrbr 4) Budget the Vango F10 Helium UL 1 Very light weight tent and good quality and designbrbr5) Vango F10 Helium UL 2 Same as above although, 2-manbrbrI own many more very expensive tents However, the ones noted above should be considered as the can be a bargain price Comment from : George Orwell 1984 |
I was surprised your favourite helm compact 1 was not on your short list? Comment from : Bo |
Hi Paul I love the tent and gear talk 🖖 just wandering if you ever watch other youtubers who don't use ultralight or indeed synthetic gear like Giles Binyon ? Comment from : Fell and Moor 54 |
Great video mate honest work you’re doing here 👍🏼 Comment from : Louie Hooper |
Is the Vango Helium as stormproof and wind stable as the Banshee? Is the Helium's flysheet semi transparent or does it give the same privacy as the Banshee? Comment from : Anon (watch Dominion 2018) |
I was interested to see you mention the F10 The excellent, original Blade 100 that my dear old mum bought me a few years back when I was getting into this is sadly looking so tired, and I was considering something different since all but one of my tents is a Vango, and I have been put off lately by the terrible build quality of the family tent I bought this summer Still, I kept finding myself drawn back to the F10 For the price and the weight, there really doesn't seem a better option, but surprisingly it's not one that there's many reviews of on here Comment from : Dennis Rodmans Hair |
If you can get one Durston x-mid 2 solid 👌 Comment from : CC MOGS |
i love my Jack Wolfskin Gossamer its around 120 pound Comment from : 1nnerconflict |
Inspired by another of your videos where you bought the Rab tarp, I found the Rab Element 2 shelter for £70 plus £20 ground cloth Weight is 800g combined Excited to try it out and hoping that condensation won’t be too big a deal brThanks again Paul for your great channel Always worth a watch and I love that your natural warmth always comes through Take care, Rich Comment from : Cole Tribe |
I have a Lanshan 2 non-pro, bought for £60 back before they were famous Still going strong now I take it almost everywhere Wanted something for rough weather (just myself as the Mrs likely wont be out in a storm) Just got the Luxe Hexpeak V4A Very strong, light at 15kg and cheap at £150 "as new"brHad a Cloud Up 2 which was ok, but the only entrance dripped water if you opened when wet, and it was too heavy compared to the Lanshan, and no better in high wind tested to 43mph (recorded)brMy only suggestion is to be honest about wind speeds and how strong you need your tent to be Have you ever REALLY been out in 50+mph winds? It's pretty horrible in those circumstances, and many over estimate wind speed, and so end up buying an expensive tent, thinking they need it Comment from : Marcuskko Chaplin |
@Paul Messner Did you try any of the Tarptent tents? Comment from : Robin Wouters |
Great video Paul, However I am surprised that the Scarp 1 wasn’t on the list Comment from : David Doyle Outdoors |
Really interesting tents I’ve never heard of most but that’s a good thing Nice to see more that’s on the market Comment from : Juan Backpacks |
How about Salewa range tents? Comment from : V S |
Do you have a poles video? I need somebrbrThanks Comment from : Time My collection |
Paul, what would you recommend as a good bike packing tent at the £150-£300 price bracket? Comment from : Majid Ali |
Thanks, seems like a decent range of tents Still not sold on the MLD, gimme my Durston XMid any day of the week ;) Comment from : Matt Griffiths |
Terra Nova Starlite 1 (or 2) could be an option Small pack size but also small in general More a super-bivy Good space around the head and shoulders makes it feels much bigger than it is Also low height so it does not catch that much wind If you are taller than 160cm, the 2 person version weights just a bit more and has much more space Starlite 1 is for people who need a very small pack size Comment from : SuperAnatolli |
Another thing to consider is the longevity of the tent Hillebergs generally tend to last a lot longer than cheaper tents Over the course of 10 years or so, you’ll probably spend the same buying the Enan compared to cheaper similar models Comment from : Maarten W |
Helm 1 Helm 2! Comment from : Steve Singer Fowkes |
I have an MSR Elixr 2 it’s 22kg and yeah a bit heavy but I love the extra space However the elixr 1 but at around £250 complete with footprint it is in my opinion a good buy You can also ditch the inner and use just the fly and foot print which will bring the weight down As I said though just my opinion Comment from : Nevin Keville |
Good to see you back paul , one of the best by far 👍 Comment from : Barrie Williams |
Hi Paul, love the videos I’m just getting into wild camping again Used to camp a lot in my younger days but life happen and the wife was never into it Now the kids are older I’m looking at doing abit of soloing Been thinking about the oex bobcat 1 I like the idea of a larger vestibule size for storage and cooking in bad weather Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated Thanks Comment from : Daniel Prouse |
Love how go outdoors give a crossed out price way higher that it really ever is, just to make some cheap crap look like a bargain Best 4 season tent for under £100 imo is the Flytop Unbelievable strength and quality given the price Comment from : Whats Not To Hike |
Greta reviews…could have picked many many different tents, so much choice brHave you lost weight brother? you’re looking the picture of health in this one hope you’re keeping well man ✌️ Comment from : I know you’re Right |
I got the Vango Nevis 200 and my friend got the oex phoxx 2 we are beginners in back packing but both tents were great on our first outing Comment from : Kikiquiet |
What do you think of these really cheat tents from asda and tesco costing £30 to £40 etc They look okay brWhy are tents thesedays in so bright colours they stand out like a beacon so are hardly descrete once deployed somewhere Comment from : Kurt Steiner |
I have a very old camping gaz bluet c200 conister stove its 50 years old but still use it for many things And has seen a lot of service over the yearsbrbrI also have a chineese version of pocket rocket it came with a mess kit also from china Cost abot £1000brWorks pretty well very fast boilling time However you cant put anything heavy on it as the supports are flimsy on the stovebrHope it helps Comment from : Kurt Steiner |
wow you got suckered ehyou could have just bought a light weight tarp and groundsheet for a fraction of the price Comment from : Christopher |
Paul, have you seen the new OLPRO SOLO £89, came out July 22 Comment from : Garth Spence |
Good video Paul I've used the Blacks Octane 2 for about 16 years but I'm looking for an upgrade and just can't find what I want 2 man, I want the space Any suggestions? I LOVE camping in the wind and rain! So, I want a tent I can spend time inside and COMFORTABLY sit up in without dipping my head, so the inner needs to be AT LEAST 100cm in height, preferably up to 110cm Also, a porch for cooking, and preferably under 2kg cos I don't drive and need to keep all weight down I'd pay about £200/£250 to get a quality tent that will last me as long as my Octane 2 has Comment from : TimelordUK |
I'm think of the vango banshee 300 the reviews look really good on it do you know much about them Paul ? Comment from : Peter nufc |
On the Lanshan Pro you have to seal all the seems yourself (against rain) or have it done as an extra by the company Comment from : D |
Another good option would be the Luxe Outdoor Hexpeak V4 Low weight, a lot of space and can handle strong winds/rain It costs around 195 pounds Comment from : Code Fabriek |
All these tents are poorbrI have a better design based on tents from the 80s Comment from : GadgetMart |
The helm2 for me Paul in £200-£300 price bracket Biased cuz I happen to have one 👍 Comment from : Darren five0 |
Great Video👍 Comment from : Victoria |
Sierra Designs Meteor 3000 2p, made for Europe Great tent, free standing, spacious, 2 large vestibules Can be pitched outer first, with cord-trick The inner offers plenty of protection with about 2/3 solid and the outer can come to ground if neededbrBanshee 200 (2008), 2kgs all in, still a good all rounder Comment from : Pedro |
Just done a 10 day trip in a DD Tarp Pyramid XL tent with the big inner Performed very well even in heavy rain and a good wind, although it’s a good Idea to run some extra guys to the loop on top of the pole in heavy wind Not perfect, gets a fair bit of condensation, but very light and flexiblebrOnly really a 2/3 season tent, but good value and enough room for a lightweight tentbrbrYour choices are excellent by the way, good no nonsense review Comment from : Brian |
Cheers Paul, as always a very informative video with good advice from a trust worthy bloke, its good to see you back in the game after your break from youtube Would you consider making a video that shows us small youtubers how you got started on YouTube and what you did to be successful, I know their is alot of videos on YouTube that cover this topic but I think it would be good to hear your journey as a wild camper and outdoors person, cheers Stu Comment from : Stu Outdoors |
A tent has to be under 1 kg to be called " lightweight" Comment from : Baroudeur |
Just wondering what had happened to your scarp 1? I know you had been looking forward to getting it and saw it on a couple of review but guessing you are now preferring the duomid? Comment from : Brian Williams |
Interested as to why you would choose the hilleberg over the scarp 1? Comment from : Neil Brady |
Sensible pragmatism All nicely covered I was surprised but delighted to hear you mention the Enan That was my choice and I've never yet regretted it (though perhaps my bank manager was less of a fan ;-) ) It would be fun to try a Duomid sometime though if I could find one to borrow Comment from : thewestonfront |
had my decathlon forclaz trek 500 2 man tent for a year now and have camped in all conditions and for the price I paid £89 it's now £110 I think brIt's freestanding dome style,br3 season but I've camped in serious weather brIt's an absolute tank of a tent for the money brBeen tested up for 70kph winds Comment from : Josh R |
Why the Hilleberg over the Tarptent Scarp 1, or another one of their offerings? I’ve read of condensation issues with the Akto and I imagine the Enan would be very similar (I just Googled and yes - very much confirmed) Scarp is MUCH better ventilated Larger in all dimensions inside too - the Enan looks very cramped And the Scarp has two entrances and two adjustable vestibules, with enough space to squeeze two (not too large) people in Not sure why anyone would choose the twice as expensive Enan instead Even if they were the same price the Scarp is still better in every way The Enan is £750 vs £370 for the Scarp 1 (imported + taxes and shipping, but still waaaay cheaper) Scarp is only 168g heavier brbrNow the only question is if it's worth an extra few hundred g (1700g total) to upgrade to the 2 person version, which really looks special (haven't seen any other lightweight, two person, non-trekking pole tent in that sort of design, with the vertical ends for plenty of head and foot space - and fits two wide and long pads with room to spare - you could even use it for three people in a pinch) brbrAnd as a side note Hilleberg have social media pages (Instagram) dedicated to hunters, which is never cool We should be protecting nature and animals and respecting them, not murdering them and seeking to have power over nature So yeah, won't ever be giving them my money Comment from : Christopher |
Any thoughts on the Vango 300? Comment from : CrazyPika |
Surprised you didn't find anywhere in this list for your Tarptent Scarp! I guess because they're not so easy to get in the UK? Comment from : Malcolm Cullen |
Amazing Comment from : ZAIB COM |
I love that you've found a way to live your best life Wild camping in the UK and making a bit of a living from it through your own initiative is cool Comment from : Julia Pigworthy |
There really no reason that tent should cost 400 pounds Ive been up close and personal with one and the price is so far above what it should be that it's kind of a joke tbh Comment from : Dan, a wank in the woods |
Really good video brWould definitely like to see more budget camping videoscheers Comment from : James Blackwell |
Hello Paul, Me and the Misses want to go camping but she is insisting on a 4 man tentCan you recommend a tent thats not to exspensive Love your vids I hope you are well Comment from : Mick Hicks Hixy |
Hi Paul , I have a station 13 whisper tent and a station 13 shield for winter both great tents at under £150 and real lightweight at 12kg and 16kg Comment from : Ben |
There should be an open online database of tents (and other gear) with specs I guess it could be monetized via affiliate links, but that's a slippery slope to being biased Comment from : kke |
I use the wechsel venture 1 Paul, I did loads of research and it suited me best, it's about 2kg which is avarge , the quality is really good and super stable, the next model up I think is the oxygen and that's about £300, that looks a great tent too Comment from : Luke Dawes |
I recently camped west of Peebles in the Scottish borders in a Go Outdoors special offer £30 tent, normally £120 No complaints That'll do for me Pissed down Zero issues Comment from : Michael Simpson |
How come you never mentioned the tarp tent Scarpe 1 Paul? Comment from : Lincs Preparedness & Outdoors |
Fantastic vid Paul, was looking recently at the Phoxx 1 after seeing it at Go Outdoors for £49 was hilarious trying to squeeze myself in but was surprised that I did (just about) went away to think about it, as it is compact and I wondered what I’d do with all my stuff Recently decided and got the Alpkit Soloist XL instead I’m yet to try it out wild camping but excited to get out in it once the temperature falls slightly If it’s good enough for Mr Beavers I’m sure it’ll more than do for my little trips Got the footprint too which is worth getting, to pitch outer first without using your patented knot system lol Comment from : Tom |
Some interesting choices there and some classics Surprised the scarp didn't get a mention, I'm still loving mine 😁 Comment from : Alternative Gear Reviews |

You're looking well mate! :) Comment from : LNTkernow |

Robens Starlight 2 Tent Comment from : Del Grey |

I have the Vango F10 Helium UL 2 I chose it because of the 2 doors that allow perfect airflow in hot temperatures The color theme is great for stealth camping, it's very light weight although it still has a very durable floor fabric (70D nylon) It's a great bad weather tent because the outer fly can be staked out down to the ground, while maintaining good ventilation from both ends The F10 Helium has been around for a very long time and is still in very high demand - I found offers for used tents that sold above the MRSPbrIt packs down smaller than the Nevis 200 Of course the Helium's outer material is not as durable (15D vs 75D nylon), but that's always the case with UL materials The Helium is still great in storms because it offers an internal tie-down system for increased rigidity of the polebrFun fact: The outer tent can be used without the inner That's a feature not even the manufacturer talks aboutbrbrAn interesting alternative is the new Robens Chaser 2 which came out brand new in 2022 Its inner tent is basically 100 mesh and can be used without the outer or even with half of the outer tent - overall a very versatile systembrDownsides: very thin floor material (20D nylon), only one door, not as waterproof, 9 cm longer pack size, vestibule is 10cm more narrow, quite drafty in cold weather since the outer tent does not reach all the way down to the groundbrbrIMHO the F10 Helium is the ideal all-season tent for Europe Comment from : TheCarmacon |
I own a duplex Paul and although they look delicate they are a robust tent ,I've used mine in 40mph winds and it withstood it well ,suprised you didn't mention any of the Nemo tents at 200/400 pound mark as they make some very light weight and practical tents at that price point Comment from : Wildernessoutside |
I'm doing the Fjallraven classic in Sweden in a few weeks, I found this guide REALLY helpful, I was planning on taking my Soulo but it's just too heavy for so many days I think, 24KG is too much Comment from : James Flockton |
Awesome video thank you, What model is the paramo you are wearing? Cheers Comment from : Steve Lewis |
Brilliant Paul Could you do a similar video on two man tents ⛺️ Comment from : Paul Spruce |
Thanks for giving some love to the Vango Nevis 100, I own it myself and for summer months it's a great option for not much cash If I had the money I'd go for the other Vango you mentioned the F10 I've been using Vango tents for years and currently own 3 (Helvellyn 200, Mirage 200 and the Nevis 100) and they've never let me down Comment from : Maximilian Fischer |

I’ve got the oex phoxx 2 and a lanshan 1 (trying it out for the first time tomorrow with a bit of cycle camping) impressed with the phoxx 2 and my only fault with it is that mine is an inner first Comment from : The Tarp End |
