This is a 1874 gold dollar The 1874 gold dollar has a mintage of 199,000 This coin was designed by James Longacre James Longacre was Chief Engraver of the US Mint The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a feathered headdress The reverse features a simple wreath design The wreath is made up of corn, wheat, tobacco, and cotton The US Mint did not produce the first gold dollars The concept of gold dollars was invented by Chris Bechtler Chris Bechtler operated a private mint that produced gold dollars Chris Bechtler’s gold dollars inspired the US Mint to make their own gold dollars The US Mint started to produce gold dollars shortly after the Cali Gold Rush Gold dollars are the smallest US coins Gold dollars were easily lost due to their small size Gold dollars were often mounted on jewelry There are three varieties of gold dollar My 1874 gold dollar is the Type 3 variety

I just got a 1874 $1 just like yours I'm going to have it graded and slabbed by NGC as its uncleaned and in very nice condition I only paid $75 for it The guy didn't know what he had Thanks for the video and information I learned a few things from it And that's a really nice gold $1 you have

What a beauty! I didnt know Longacre designed this, I'm more familiar with the IHP, shield nickel, flying eagle but not the gold coins Thank you for the history of this coin I had no idea the gold $1 was more commonly used instead of the silver dollar

I have seen them there real small! Cool looking coins! I had a couple 1851 or 53s I think! The Panama Pill is a small coin to! They were on a bracelet so I sold them! Nice collection you have sir! Great video brother thanks man! Peace Brother!

They are heavily counterfeited, so it is one of the only coins that I recommend only buying graded and slabbed! There are three types of these gold dollars The type II dollars cost a lot more than the type I and type III You will have to pay closer to $1,000 for a decent AU type II coin Good luck on building that pre '33 collection, the coins you have look great!
