Great insight! I’ve been in the business for 10 years now and it isn’t easy! Sharing info is absolutely a great way to make everyone better Comment from : DE LA GALLERY |
Yes, I love what you said about marketing to other photographers for prints, wrong :) So nice to see another photographer share this Comment from : Janice Sullivan |
That's what i'm passionnate about duh this is where you make your money brThanks for the tips :) Comment from : Daniel Cousineau |
Coming back to this video now about 11 months later, I wonder if it's possible to make a reasonable living by selling your photography online, but not necessarily do things like videos or classes, which I know many photographers do to make money online Or put another way, how can you go about selling your work online and being profitable and finding enough clients to buy your work? I mean I'd love to make a side income from my photography (both online and offline) but as for the online component, I don't really want to start a YT channel or sell classes/courses Comment from : H R |
Is there a print on demand service/s that you recommend for using on my squarespace site? Comment from : James OBrien |
That is why you fail or in my case why I'm so rubbish lol but how did you manage so much? Did you know a lot about photography and how to do a channel and how to engage people and know about marketing? Very well done Comment from : Tony Hobbs |
So I feel this is click bate at its finest Half the video is you talking about make money not how to make money doing land scape Photography brCan you make a video that actually talks about this in detail to what the title suggest? Comment from : jonny quick |
I love you bro Comment from : israel Luevano |
Man, you just burst my bubble Basically, you just said there’s no money in landscape photography As a person who, lean towards being shy and introverted, I could never be a content creator At the same time, I would have no interest in leading workshops I am about to break bad on a Fujifilm GFX 50SII and a couple of GM lenses I guess I’m gonna be a broke landscape photographer Comment from : Will Bart |
Is it possible to live of landscape photography without youtube? How would you shift your focus if you wold not do youtube? Comment from : BrottOchstraff |
Excellent! Comment from : jammin4good |
This is an older video but I am amazed you are sharing this information It is very generous of you and one I certainly needed to hear I have a day job and do photography in my spare time This gives me some hope…brbrI had a reasonably successful workshop business but Covid killed it and I’m working on bringing it backbrbrThank you for doing what you do Comment from : Nature Photography Show |
Thank you so much for sharing this! Comment from : andrecoxa |
Hi Mark! Thank you so much for this great advice! I enjoy it very much how you see photography and how you communicate it to the others Best of luck to you! Comment from : TomPhoto |
I'm very happy for your success! It's depressing though that it seems all but impossible to make money as a landscape photography with the photography itself Not everybody has the personality to do youtube or run workshops etc Comment from : David Scruggs |
We’ll done, Mark Congrats Comment from : Gavin Davidson |
I haven’t watched this entire video yet Mark but I can tell you I’m not at all surprised at your success, honestly you’re a class act and a smart cookie, the math is quite simple, wish you continued success ! 👍👏😀 Comment from : AoToGo |
Thank you very much for this video Comment from : Michal Vörös |
So, forget about the art of photography; instead, create a brand, market yourself and give people 'value' We used to have David Bowie, now we have Ed Sheeran Comment from : Bob Shuwab |
Thanks for sharing this Mark!! Congrats on all that you have achieved Keep up the awesome work I always look forward to your videos 🙌 Comment from : Alex Morriss |
What is the difference between Instagram and having a Squarespace website? Should I be putting the same photos on both of them? Another thing How do I prevent others from copying my photos? Comment from : Jess Gutierrez |
Thanks for sharing this information! My two niches in photography are travel/lifestyle (which includes landscape) and abstract fine art images I think your corporate background served you well I went to art school - where we learned nothing about business I would love to do travel photography workshops I haven't quite figured out how to go about it I think I would like to be a secondary workshop leader on a few trips just to reverse engineer it and figure it out as I never travel in group situations myself, I have no idea what people expect, and the furthest out I ever make in my travel plans is the airline reservation Maybe that's a subject for a future video? Comment from : @ARTIST-AT-LARGE |
Great break down of the way you make money in different areas But did you actually make any money directly from your landscape photos other than print? Comment from : Safari |
The most practical, informative, photography video I’ve seen Thank you! Comment from : David Ligon |
If you were to make money without building a brand, how would you finance it? If you couldn't brand yourself using your name and image, how would you go about it? I neither want to use my name nor image for future online business, I want the result/art to be the sole focus, but it feels like I would trap myself in a niche box and could potentially prevent scaling well over time Comment from : MetaSamsara ∞ |
Hi, first of all thanks for the great content I have been watching your videos for a while now I want to ask, what are your thoughts on wildlife photography I see you specialize specifically on landscape Is it a good idea I do both? Comment from : Offtrail |
Hi Mark, I greatly appreciate the detailed info you’ve provided in this video I do have one lingering question though - what are your operational costs? Im guessing you spend a significant amount on travel and perhaps advertising or sponsored/promoted content I’m trying to get a ballpark on net profit vs gross revenue brCheers! Comment from : John Arnsdorf |
Mark, your transparency is always so refreshing, especially in todays world I’ve learned so much from you the past few years You have earned every bit of your success and it looks to be paying off! brbrOne question I do have is what does your net income look like after your expenses? I am very interested in pursuing an early “retirement” from my career and turning towards photography as a supplemental income I’m a long way from that; both financial and with where my photography skills are, but it’s still something I would like to investigate the options brbrAs always, thanks for your willingness to share and help us all improve! I pays off in more ways than you know! 👏🏻 Comment from : Chris Davis |
Very well said Love your content Learning so much Thanks and am happy for your success Comment from : Richard Burguillos |
It's trully impressive how much you achieved and how you became a reference in landscape photography in so little time! Cheers! Comment from : Lucas Marques |
Fantastic Video Thank you Mark Comment from : Black & Light |
Awesome, very insteresting 👍🏻 Comment from : Rurix Motovlog |
Hi, I'm curious about what you think about YouTube being the main engine for your career What you would be right now without the push that YouTube gave and give to you? How much do you think it counts? I believe it is fundamental and without it it would have been almost impossible Comment from : marco pigoni |
This video is amazing contentwise, but bar charts going right to left confused the hell out of me :D Comment from : kudaro |
Thanks Mark for this I stumbled across or was guided to this video and it shifted my whole self in a positive way brI’ve long believed that experiences is where people want to be and spend their money It’s so much more personal, valuable and memorable than things brYou’ve sparked my inspiration which was already pretty well smouldering this morningbrAfter Covid killed off my business as a restaurant and food photographer as soon as lockdowns were announced, it’s been front and centre that I failed to diversify to create a robust and adaptable business brIf you don’t get it wrong you can’t learnbrI’m on the edge of quitting a well paid job I used to do, which I took after 2 years of no income and it was gifted to me on a plate It’s time to get back to my love of a creative life and sharing it with those who share that love To spotlight those who are making positive changes in the world for the sustainable future we must achievebrThanks again for all the info, I’ll be looking through your videos for more business information but this one has me scribbling down ideas like crazybrWe can always start again but we never start from the bottom, but from the experiences we already have gainedbrCheers Mark and have an amazing year end success Comment from : Jonathan Thompson |
That graph immediately made me sad I’m a videographer as well, but is it really impossible to make money and sell prints without making a YouTube channel and grinding it for years? I really do not want to do that Comment from : Daniel Nansel |
That idea of landscape photo experience, not things confirms an intuition I had Thanks for sharing all this with us! Comment from : Thomas Paris |
Thanks for being so transparent and sharing your experience Well, this confirmed that I won't be getting rich selling prints I'm not a public speaker or trainer, so there goes that I better hold on to my FT corp job 😁 Comment from : Oscar A |
Thank you for sharing this valuable information, all the best to you in the future Comment from : Robert Hennessey |
Mark, I feel like one of the reasons you have been so successful on YouTube is that you are an incredible educator You have the incredible skill of being able to break complex or tricky concepts into something that feels really simple Your technical videos on composition or editing are just next level Being an educator is not easy and you are definitely one of the best Congrats to all of your success Comment from : Joe A |
I had to stop drinking, smoking and using drugs to support my photography habit Still can't figure out how to make money without trading my time for money But good info Comment from : Demetrio Montoya |
Great honesty as always thanks for sharing 👍 Comment from : Volkan Sorkun |
One thing that I’ve found to be very useful is it’s not “how” you do it but “who” you need to make it happen, it seems like a lot of your revenue is being blocked by your lack of time Maybe you should find other people or systems to help you generate more revenue and keep growing multiple streams at once Comment from : Zach Yim |
Mark: Great presentation I appreciated your insights on starting and running a business I'm president of a family business that is 125 years old My grandfather started the business after working for and with Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Nicola Tesla Edison invented consumer photography for George Eastman of Eastman Kodak, he invented motion pictures and the phonograph He has 1093 US patents the most of anyone brbrI have boxes of mistakes that we've made And we keep making them But we remember that it isn't trial and error--It's trial and success! Comment from : Dick Clark |

Thank you Mark, this is very helpfull The sentence about the landscape photography experience is gold ! I'm starting my photography enterprise this year in France, and your experience is very precious even if we are not in the same country, so the rules are different, specially with youtube Thank you for sharing, all the best ! Thanks for sharing this, Mark It’s great to see behind the curtain a bit Many of us dream about a landscape photography career but are nervous about how to move into it You help show how it can be done and the hard work that goes into it Keep up the great work! Comment from : Craig Suehrstedt |
Congrats on turning your life around with teaching landscape photography Mark By the looks of it, the money is in selling workshops and landscape-related content to photographers If budding photographers are getting into it to sell their creations, they will most likely be disappointed Thanks for the informative and honest video! Comment from : Andrew Balcombe |
How do you get sponsorships? Do you need a certain amount of subscribers? Did you reach out to companies, or did they approach you? Comment from : Barry Callister |
Brilliant Comment from : In the Left Seat |
Sociale media and stock images do really work for me Sociale media gives me clients sells products Also sell my photowalks and workshops there I never found the courage for Youtube tho I keep thinking literally nobody wil want to watch me Comment from : Bart Ros |
Amazing results Mark Makes sense You are one of my favorites youtubers I only make about 1/10th of that I find competition is really cutting And good marketing representation is near impossible Comment from : Bart Ros |
Marking this to watch in full later, as I don't have time now, but hoping to glean some information here Sadly at first glance though it looks like you aren't really driving any or very little revenue from actual photography and mostly from things that grew out of your YT presence :(brAs a self billed "fine art photographer" trying to make a living on actually selling my art, I am finding the main problem is getting people to actually see it When they do they love it and I get a few sales, but I just can't get enough eyeballs on my work and I have no idea how to do that Comment from : John Vanderbeck |
I dined because the video as well 222k subs Gotta follow my numbers Comment from : Scar Creative Labs |
Thanks for such a great video! The quote "The market for Landscape Photography things is small, but the market for the Landscape Photography experience is massive" definitely has me re thinking what I thought about making money in the photography world Thank again for the great video! Comment from : Mason Moir |
You could hire someone, pay them 50k a year to run all the things you aren’t able to and make an extra 100k+ a year I’ll do it 🙋♂️ Comment from : Austin Wilson |

Yep I would buy experience Comment from : Jack Matthews |
Great video and Business Review Mark!! Super informative and inspiring! Comment from : Steven Pitts |
Fascinating! My takeaway here is to be a successful landscape photographer, one's business ideally should be weighted heavily toward packaging and marketing of hope, inspiration and knowledge to other would-be landscape photographers, as opposed to selling and licensing one's own work It's similar in the music world -- where a massive industry of folks bnot/b making a living from their music have transitioned to selling hopes, dreams and business products to other musicians Not to be a curmudgeon here, but the general lack of support, appreciation and patronage of the arts has transformed much of today's creative world into one gigantic circle jerk of marketing to the like-minded Comment from : Randy K |
Thanks Mark, this was great! I am 2 or 3 years out from retirement and want to do something creative and try to support it with revenue so this video was wonderful and timely Hope I can do it even though I am in my 60s Comment from : Robert Webster |

Mark, as always a great video But watching it and seeing all the balls you have in the air my big question was "What is his day like? How does he keep all of these tasks in order and not just scatter shoot his day??" Please keep up the good work You are absolutely one of my favorite Youtube talents that I watch You ALWAYS provide valuable content Thank you so much Comment from : John Elich |

It really shows that you put a lot of work into this, so you truly deserve the success and growth :) Also, thanks for inspiring others, either it's people wanting to go full time, or people like me, who see landscape photography as a great hobby and a way to "escape the stress of everyday life" :) Comment from : TS84NO |
