Stock photography? I just got my 1099 from last year on Adobe Stock Total royalties for 2022 were $1140 Hahahaha What a joke! This is why most stock photos suck, because any self-respecting photographer won't put their work up for sale to make 15 cents a sale It's good entertainment though, just going on stock photo sites and critiquing how bad the photos are, haha I do make a fair bit on print sales though There's more to be had there, just have to get on the right platforms, and into the right galleries, IMO Weddings are always the no-brainer I met a guy at a bar, who said he'll pay me $750 a wedding to start, just to come shoot for the day He said if the pics are good, he'd add another hundred on the next one, and another on the following one Basically a grand for a days work No editing, no meeting to go over and pick out albums It helps pay for gear pretty quick With the current divorce rate, you can even get repeat customers! Lol Comment from : Clint the Audio Guy |
I appreciate the transparency but it's a bit depressing It sounds like the money isn't in photography but becoming a photography youtuber, which everybody isn't cut out for Comment from : David Scruggs |
Thanks for being honest and laying out so simply I appreciate this Comment from : Steph anie |
i can already tell by the time stamp highlights this video legit 💯 Comment from : Tori |
Realization I've had recently one of the big differences MOST genre of photography professionals sell a service Landscape and wildlife inherently sell a product unless you can figure out how to turn it into a service (ie: workshops, webinars, youtube channels etc) Comment from : Michael Palozzola |
I am starting to feel the same about aviation niche photography lol it’s tough and no one’s going to call Comment from : Mad Scientist FPV & TJ |

Thanks man, I've been a landscape photog for about 20 years now and got a lot out of it The process you describe rings true to me Comment from : Christopher Seufert |
I absolutely love the analogy and detailed explanations with transparency, but after listing off your Oars (sources of income), I can't shake the feeling that the photography itself is just the vehicle for essentially working in marketing The only item listed that is actually generating income from photography itself is the stock photos The rest were additional sources of income by marketing your skillset and selling your knowledge rather than your work brbrWould you have more information on how your work itself is monetized, and what lessons we might gain from your experiences? Comment from : Xalidos |
Cool Comment from : Divi Photos |

okay i'm struggling to choose the kind of photography i wanna do I have been doing photography as a hobby for 3 years now and i still have a LOT to learn However i want to try to create a side hustle in photography cause i really love it (i'll graduate my 5 years engineering degree in september and i'll probably be looking for a job in that area) But i like a lot of different kind of photography, landscape, portrait, animal photography and more and i'm scared of choosing the wrong one haha Comment from : NoOneReally |
Hi, it seems the value you are bringing is for other photographers, not the intended customer: the art buyer What tips do you have to succeed within the art buyer space? Comment from : Johannes R |
What a great video Thank you I’m interested in your take on getting your work into galleries Comment from : Thomas Aaron |
We all dream of a landscape photography career However, few of us are willing to do what it takes to make it A big part of making it is to stay in the game Mark, I have learned a lot from your videos Thank you for your time, effort and expertisebrbr I will challenge anyone who doubts your commitment to try it for six months and let us know how easy it was to be a “pure” landscape photographer, while making a living at it Comment from : Boris Tahmasian |
Great video! Comment from : Matthew Henderson |
It's a truism that you regret more the things you didn't do in life than the things you did Kudos for going for it in life and sharing your losses along with your wins Professional nature photography isn't for the faint of heart Comment from : John Drummond |

I get the impression that especially landscape photographers nowadays get more money from teaching others how to do this art rather than from the actual images Comment from : DoenerFoundation |

While this video was very interesting and thankyou for being open about it but I can't help but see that you're more of a YouTuber by profession than landscape photographer You don't make a income from landscape photography you make it from YouTube and photography is just the topic you choose to cover would you not say? Comment from : BishieBoi |
thank you for inspiring me in taking the plunge! subscribed! Comment from : Oak And Iron |

I appreciate this video but I think this begs the question: Are you a landscape photographer or are you someone who makes YouTube videos about landscape photography? The photography is now a means to a different end Based on my experience, a precious few people can actually make a sustainable income through pure landscape photography Comment from : Sara McAllister |
Basically be a YouTuber Thanks Comment from : Geronimo Serrano |

I want to be a landscape photographer and I've been doubting it because I'm afraid it isn't going to pay much money, but it is also a passion I love to do Your video has made me see landscape photography in a better picture and that there are other ways to get work put out there, thank you Comment from : krissy_ lee24 |
Your way of explaining is very easy to understand Every words gets into the mind and your gap intervals give enough time to interpret the information Comment from : Shivam Yadav |
Great video! Out of curiosity are these figures gross or net earnings? Thanks for the motivation and the honesty! Comment from : John Vander Ploeg |
This was so extremely helpful Mark! I've been trying to become a full time landscape/street photographer for a while now and have only been able to generate about $1400, most through print sales and the rest through a couple portrait jobs (which isn't my thing) Comment from : Rick Autiello |
Set out to be a landscape photographer objectively speaking, became a YouTuber that happens to do landscape photography That's interesting Comment from : TerraMagnus |
Im glad to see people win Comment from : Steven |
brother you are a superstar, I do appreciate your honesty Comment from : Ivan Cardoso |
Very interesting video Aligns with what I've experienced as a visual artist Very little income to be made from actually selling the art Much more in teaching people how to make art that won't sell edit: this is nothing against you, just general jaded-ness about art and how little value it seems to provide on its own Comment from : Critelli Art |
Loved this video aspiring photographers like myself appreciate the value that you bring, i always watch your youtube content and feel ive learned a lot BUT the one thing that resonates through myself is your transparency, to sit and discuss earnings and revenue streams is a breath of fresh air Well done on your success and long may it continue Comment from : Terry Bromley |
Mark, your videos are always excellent I always learn a ton with every one Your content varies and is always on point That and your soothing voice make a great combination I am glad you reviewed the new ball head with us, although you seemed hesitant Colorado tripods is an up and coming entity and deserves a mention, I have been watching you for about a year and know that I trust everything you say to be true Keep up the great work! Comment from : Tom T |

Thank you for your insight and humble honesty in your professional photography journey Your videos are always well thought out, concise, and without the extra "fluff" that we get from a lot of other tutorials Truly appreciate all that you do Mark If you ever make it out to Hawaii, give me a holler and we go shoot! Aloha Comment from : Cody Stewart |

Mark your secret sauce is your integrity Comment from : Jim Moran |
I appreciate this so much! Comment from : Dawn Arisen |
You are so refreshing I get the feeling that you are one of those artists who revel in the success of others as much or more than in your own success There can never be too many artists The more the merrier! Comment from : Tom Pula |
So it would be smart to attempt to restart a squarespace account It was confusing originally so I gave up on it This is just a hobby and not really an income attempt But selling some would be nice Comment from : David Ustick |
I'm commenting on this video in hope that it bumps it back into the limelight! It's fantastic, I subscribed to your channel a month ago, binged your videos but have only just come across this one It's great, it's what we all need to hear I've never watched a video like this before that is so open, gets down to the nitty gritty of numbers and percentages (kudos for that) and inspires us all that it can be done if you keep pushingbrThankyou and keep going! Comment from : Ben Dale |
So the best way to make money as a landscape photographer is to become a YouTuber A little disappointing that the art isn't worth enough to sustain a career Comment from : Alok Somani |
Very Helpful words Comment from : TheCrackpotStockTrader |

Thanks for making this video I get the most traffic on my blog and I spend the least amount of time on it I think I will focus more on that and maybe add a print section to make $$ Because right now I have no way to make money off my blog Comment from : Bri Sul |
Mark always conveys information in a real, honest, comprehensible manner He comes across honestly as a normal guy learning as he goes, although after spending 17 years in finance, he probably has somewhat of an advantage per the money side of things Per making money in Photography, my daughter went into family photography, selling contracts to take photos on a regular basis of families from their children's birth to whenever I told her that I felt it would not work Well, it did She makes much more money now than I do, and I am a professional manager with 40 years of experience Obviously this model will not work with landscape photography, so Mark is dead-on when he talks about added value But, it is a bit sad that the landscape product in general cannot really stand on its ownbut, that is art, and art is long and life is short But, thanks, Mark, for going through the process, and documenting it so well and in such an enjoyable manner You keep my cynicism at bay Comment from : aristarchan1 |
What a video! Simply amazing Hands down one of my favorite channels to watch regularly Comment from : Amandeep Sodhi |
It is amazing that no revenue was generated from the tourism component of your marketing drivebrA pity you didn't set your sights directly on the advertising departments of those who transport tourists into the USA - the cruise ship industry, the airlinesThese are business folk who know best about returns on ad dollars Tourism departments are run by political appointees They know best about wasting tax payers money Comment from : Jack Johnson |
Thanks for the clarity Mark Comment from : Richard Pesce |
The connection with value is so true, I do think testing the waters is important and maybe offering a twist on things that are financially feasible for you as an individual Its the time that it takes to find your best direction that can be a bit unbearable, great video of a subject not well discussed Comment from : Artists Meet Film |
How about a video on how to set up a website Comment from : Dick Hoskins |

Thanks Mark for your work, not only I absolutely love your videos and your work, as it teaches me and helping me decide on my new camera, but for you to just show the cards on the table is amazing I’ve never seen anyone to go brutally honest about their income as you just did It can show to lot of people to just give it a go I applaud you 👏👏👏 Comment from : Jiri Subrt |

Excellent honest and informative video backed up with tangible evidence, you do have a very calming, pleasing, and engaging delivery of your video content Mark, always a pleasure to watch, well done and good luck for 2021 👍 Comment from : Nick Udy |
That's actually very sad that as a photographer, the actual photography is NOT your source of income In a way of course it is but not directly from photography Comment from : surrounded_me |
Very interesting as I'm sure that there are alot of us looking back at these videos as we consider making a similar change Seems that through You Tube you have found your niche perhaps more than through the sale of your prints etc I think you have done an amazing job in reaching that realisation tbh Personally your videos have opened my eyes alot I was of the view that to be a Photographer you took and sold photosPerhaps niaively I hadnt considered that there were other revenue streams in the way that you did brbrQQ: do you consider yourself as purely a photographer or do you see yourself more as a hybrid: YouTuber, Photographer and Educator? brbrThanks Mark! Comment from : mikan B |
Thank you so much for all the insight Precious for someone who just started his channel a few days ago I ve been watching you for so long with great pleasure Comment from : Fotoğraf Çekmek Kolay |
