Given your average win rates, what were the factors that helped you decided whether you wanted to play 5/10 or10/20? Was it a matter of which game looked the softest? How does one quantify whether it is the right time to move up to the next higher stakes? Thanks Jonathan You rock Comment from : Ken Holloway |

very realistic , but pretty tuff to reach that 50-dollar-hourly in vegas nowadaysand to handle downswings ( while staying away from home, not having a real social life, loosing instead of printing money, and sometimes questioning yourself) "Living as a poker pro" sounds great, but not easy any thoughts ??? Comment from : Frank Geissler |

I have a question for Johnathon, I live in Washington State and the laws for no limit are different than Vegas or California because there is a buy in cap and a max bet cap for Tribal Casinos and independent, non tribal casinos In my area our games are referred to as Spread Limit PokerbrbrOur only major casinos are Tribal so there is no Harrahs or Horseshoe casinos Tribal casinos are allowed to have a max buy in of $500 for 1/3 3/5 5/10 with a max bet of $500 bet for any red chip game and a three re-raise cap on all streets So UTG can raise, UTG+1 re-raises and UTG+2 gets capped so it gives middle position, chance to see the flop along with the original raiser brbrIt gets worse for independent card rooms where although the 3/5 spread limit games are capped at min buy in of $1000, there is a max bet cap of $300 with the same three bets cap on raisesbrbrSo my question to you is, can a good player make a living with these types of restrictions on buyin, betting and bet caps?brbrHere is my theory as to why it is impossible to make a living under these conditionsbr1 with a $300 max bet, it gives the "Gamble Player" with $1500 stack a chance to call and catch his outs against the Hero because "Why not, its only $300 to callbr2 $300 max bet takes away the fear of no limit and just becomes a bingo game brbrAm I wrong or can a good tight player who plays consistently well survive and become a profitable player in this environment? Great work I have a goal of 60k a year from cash and 50k a year from tournaments I play 10 or so hours a week of medium stakes online PLO (1-2 to 5-10), and six weeks during the WSOP The tournament wins are hardest because I sell over half my action for WSOP - and god knows winning an 8000 person live bird is hard (my best is 13th) I study 5 hours per week mostly by talking to pro friends, watching videos, and getting sweated by coaches when I play for 100 bucks an hour The rest of the time I write books and play League of Legends :-) I'm not sure I do this right, and am always under bankrolled, but over the last few years, I've sort of nearly achieved those goals with the described input Comment from : Paul Gibbons - author, speaker, podcaster |

Hey Jonathan I have a question I play 1/2 and mostly 2/5 at local poker rooms here in Florida A lot of times I sit down and after 2 or 3 hours Im up 1K and I pick a good spot to leave booking a nice win Honestly I don't wanna sit there another 4 hours and give back any of that win I think leaving when you can book a nice win is not a bad idea especially when other days Im there 8 hours just trying to get back to even or to book a small $200 win Also a lot of times I will buy back in short for around $250 so Im basically free rolling with a nice win in my pocket and yes my goal is 100k per year and I am on my way to that goal My main question is should I leave or not after hitting a nice win in only a few hours? Thanks for any input Comment from : Alex Hoffman |

There's always confusion embedded in this topic and it results in people talking past each other For the small amount of people who pursue self-employment they know or (quickly come to understand) "making X amount money" is all about Net Earnings After Taxesie, the lower section of an income statement euphemistically called the Bottom line Curiously, you chose to polarize in this video by building your case based on Revenue By polarizing, the max amount of confusion is now in play People pretend like they know what financial/accounting terms mean when they truly don't When I hear someone say "I want to make $100k a year as a poker player" the better assumption (in terms of building a cogent analysis) is to treat that in the context of "make $100k just like some average corporate employee getting a Form W-2 at the end of the year and that form showing them to have made $100k in wages (whether salary, hourly or piecemeal) together with prepaying wage taxes along the way as well as having some health insurance and maybe having access to employer-sponsored retirement plans In other words, the poker player wants to do his profession for a year and sit down at a bar with the casino tech guy who also happened to net same after-tax earnings That could be a very substantive discussion as it relates to discussing the minutae of their jobs It's relatable because one guy got a job from a large employer and the other bought himself a job in a self-created sole proprietorship micro business that will typically only ever have one employee So to net earnings of $100k you'll need substantially more table hours in order to build Gross Revenue sufficiently above $100k so that after handling all those business costs, the poker player nets $100k There's a few more steps to normalize earnings between a wage earner and a sole proprietor But this is what properly gets us close and makes the rest of the excercise academic Of course, the big take away ultimately is that for any given level of poker revenue, it will necessarily equate to a materially smaller figure for a wage earner Generating $100k in sole proprietor revenue may be the equivalent of total annual wages of less than $60k Comment from : Jay Bingham |
