Take short distances into account In the US you can travel 300 miles between places of tourist interest so can do a lot of mileage in a short trip In European countries, major places are only tens of miles apart at most Allow far more time around each stopbrMany European countries do not use much cash; make sure your bank card will do contactless Also Amex is not widely acceptedbrI don't get the paying for using the toilet thing- I am in London and have never paid to use one Just go when you are in a bar or cafe, also all museums have toilets If you need to go more often than that, see a doctor!brAlso realise the difference between "America" and "Americans" European countries are mostly politically very different (to "the left") and the US government and some of its actions are widely hated BUT this is not extended to people from the US Stay away from discussing US politics as somehow "better" and mentioning (the US perception of )"freedom"- most Europeans would consider themselves equally, or far, more "free" than people on the US Comment from : Charles Underwood |

I am from Greece and I think American people are probably the best tourists Very kind and smiley people Thank you😊 Comment from : mares81 |

This is a very good video One thing that perhaps you cover in another video is raveling in Europe if you are wheelchair dependent There are many places where there are no ramps, no elevator or elevators that do not work Please caution your viewers to have a good plan if they depend on a wheelchair for mobility or transportation Comment from : Hernan Alvarado |

Hi Nick, I usually buy currencies before I leave the US I have travelled to Europe twice including UK and an EU and I always have money left over I am going again in a two weeks and I got EURO and Swiss Francs the same way, what do you think of that? Comment from : KeeperOfOddKnowledgeSociety1976 |

I’m from New York and I’m always amazed at how much people depend on their backpack or day bag NEVERNEVER put your passport or wallet in your day bag Use the fake wallet with prepaid Visa/Mastercards If they take your day bag and or backpack what will you do? Pacsafe is one of the best backpacks 🎒 to use because of its security features Take only the cash you will need for the day and 1 credit card Leave the rest at your hotelCommon sense is not common😮This applies to New York too Comment from : J P |

OH - BTW when he mentions paying for the bathroom he means in public spaces Germany for example will have public toilets and they require a small fee IMHO I like it because it keeps the toilets clean, in good condition and I actually can go to a toilet without having to go into a business or back to my hotel Comment from : Art Cafe |

Excellent guide video! thanks! May I also add a related tip on getting cash and ATMs - in Europe - firstly, bank ATMs are the way to go in Europe But I found such a variety in fees charge - like some charge absolutely no ATM fees to foreign cards holders and some charge ridiculously high fees Found an app for this - ATM Fee Saver - it gives a list of free and lower fee ATMs along with their withdrawal limits Boy, it was soo helpful! landed up saving so much on ATM fees Worth adding to your list, it will help a lot of international travellers! Comment from : Jess Williams |

just found this channel , pretty good information , personally I like going to the pub when i travel , found some really good restaurants, shops etc from talking with the locals in the pub, yeah don't spend all day but they are a good source of local knowledge, I'm off to Nice and Lyon for the RWC so I'll be in a pub or 2 for sure , but good channel Comment from : peter rowley |

The day I took a tour to cinqueterre in italy, the tour lady was very nice I asked her permission to leave a tip as my appreciation because I came from a different country She smiled and said she would appreciate it I gave her a 10 euros and the rest of the tourist group followed Am very happy to see in her basket over a hundred euros as tip She shared with the driver So kind and beautiful act of her I know tip is not enforced or obligated in most countries outside the US, but I tip everywhere I go and love to see a happy smiling face, of course not one single euro, but a decent amount to buy a quick burger lunch or a good cup of coffee Tipping is not a waste of money, it's a way of sharing and showing kindness and appreciation I also don't ignore those young guys jumping on train and play some good music exposing their skill I support them too If you have money to travel, share your joy with people you meet in a happy moment of your life That stay with you Comment from : mary nguyen |

Many Americans travel round Europe and seam shocked that things are different from how they are back home Don't forget there are between 44 and 50 countries in Europe, depending on what list you look at😂) Each one is different in many ways With global brands and trade you find similarities, however there are many differences so don't complain if its not done like that back homebrRespect the locals In that I mean don't patronise people by saying how they do things is cute, you could be seen as being rude about someone's culture brAlso remember your not in Disney Land these cities and attractions were not built as tourist attractions all cities you will visit are also places were people live and work That wonderful old building may look wonderful but it could be someone private house and how would you like it if someone opens your gate to look in your window or take a photo by your door If it says private it is private Comment from : John Froggatt |
I have found, not all, but a lot of our encounters in Italian restaurants when we try to speak Italian they’ll speak English back It’s much better to rent a car outside the larger cities You’ll have more choices if you can drive a manual Comment from : David Halley |
Many europeans are more direct than the Americans as such may be considered rude Where as you may be rude by their standard like to feel granted that everybody should be able to speak english Comment from : Act sion |

I don’t understand one point here brGenerally in the EU, you have a legal right to free tap water from any restaurantand I’ve only ever paid for a bathroom across most European countries when I’ve not been buying anything and especially centre of big cities Comment from : Gizzer3010 |
Itinerary? I pick a city and spend my entire 6 or 7 weeks right there If I can't get somewhere using public transportation I don't go Comment from : Dan Chamberlain |

Hello!brJust came across your video Really great tips ! And all are true ! I'm French, and yes, it is NOT TRUE we don't like Americans Europe is a collection of very different countries and small countries We are used to mix with different people But YES, we find Americans LOUD and do not like for example to hear what they say when we are sitting 4 tables from them :-) brAs for your tip about trying new cuisines, YES, it puzzles us to hear an order for a "salade niçoise" in a restaurant but " with no tuna, Ok for the egg, but not hard boiled, soft boiled, please Ah ! and no anchovies etc etc " Maybe best to order some other dish ?brBut Americans have great qualities we do not have here :-( Their optimism for example !brMais c'est une excellente vidéo ! Bravo ! Comment from : muriel lepoutre |

Additional information to your video, take a digital picture of your passport and take a copy of your voter registration Our passports were stolen in Paris and the American Embassy said that was one additional proof of being a citizen of the United States Comment from : Charles Churchill |

When I was a kid they used to still have pay restrooms down at the ocean go to DC yet to get Code and you have to make sure you ask for a receipt because they don't necessarily give you a receipt and the codes on the receipt so you have to buy something so pay for toilets you go to Either the Smithsonian or a hotel for the restroom in DC I'm used to scheduling my bathroom breaks it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal Comment from : Shelley Netzer-Edgerton |
Of all the phrases he recommends to learn, he left out "thank you" Some will say it's a typical American entitlement to not say that Comment from : L T |

If people go to other places in the world and stay only at American hotel chains, eat only in American chain restaurants/coffee shops, only take big tour buses to get around, and expect everything to be like in America, they may as well stay home The joy of travel is not just in seeing the "sights" (often over-crowded and totally touristy), but in immersing yourself in the true culture of wherever you are and interacting in a meaningful way with the local residents Comment from : Nancy Ross |
Great tips Thanks Comment from : Jim Eagan |

I go to a bank ATM every time I choose the option of local currency You were not clear on the two options shown Could you clarify? Also, what do you think about choosing accounts like Wise currency conversion cards? Comment from : gooddaysahead1 |

This is a great video Thank you for taking the time to pull this info together My wife and I have been travelling for 40+ years 😮 brbrYour point about rushing from place to place is so true I think it’s better to focus than doing drive bys so you can tell your friends you “visited Budapest” Manageable chunks are better Also the home country charge card option always confused me Thank you for that brbrAs a Canadian, I do find some American travellers to be loud and obnoxious But they obviously haven’t benefited from watching this video 😂 Comment from : Leslie |
Surprised this hasn't been mentioned: Discover Card is worthless in Europe I'm genuinely shocked when I find a place in Europe that accepts this card, and it's usually a hotel that's part of a major, international chain Comment from : csl1963 |
No one can tell me they haven’t had one bad experience to include here in the states and you didn’t have a chip on your shoulders or some arrogance Comment from : jorge p |

The Pimsleur Method appeared to be a scam of some sort because while I could sign up on the internet, when I attempted to cancel, I was told that I needed to call to cancel Since I would not waste my time calling, I ran into problemas Comment from : Sylvain Forget |
I am a seasoned American traveler in Europe, and the advice here is excellent Try to stay in a neighborhood, whether it's a rental or a small, family-owned hotel We have daily picnic lunches, which draws us into the grocery stores and small shops Most will make you a fresh sandwich in the deli section Good wine is cheap, the produce fresh, and the chocolate is excellent Bring your shopping bag, or buy one at the store Also, open-air markets and street food can't be missed! Comment from : Joseph Terranova |
Love ur videos! Thanks 🙏🏻 Comment from : Ruba Subei |
In Germany, we get annoyed when people talk loudly Sometimes I slip back into that, but for the most part, I really don't like loud volume talking Comment from : LadyYvaJ |
As a European, I like the section on tipping because it shows how diverse Europe really is It's like the States, where each state has its own unique culture - but probably even more so Tipping is a good example of that Comment from : Spin81 |
Why do you need cash? Comment from : Michael Køie Poulsen |
I had a friend from Philadelphia stay few years ago I took her to a couple of tourist attractions because she wanted to go, in York Cathedral , she went quiet, a load of loud Americans had descended in there , she was embarrassed and avoided them Comment from : Claire Temperley |

You are so right, it's exactly what I hope for Just act normal, and treat people the way you want to be treated I've been to the USA and I did exactly the same, and I've heard from my guy that I made a very good impression on them So happy that I did I will share this one with him for he's coming to Spain with me, when I'm on holiday there Can't wait😃 Comment from : saskiapanter |

My input: 1 Bring enough cash from home for the trip and credit cards 2 Restaurant servers in tourist areas do expect to get tips, and contrary to what people say, their salaries are low just like in the US and will appreciate tips, 10-15 They are not stupid, they do know about American's tipping culture and do expect them 3 Upon arriving at a destination, I would first look for the nearest grocery stores rather than restaurants 4 When traveling, I don't care about meeting the locals and vise versa because of time constrains with a list to do 5 Don't be too adventurist with the local cuisine not knowing how it will affect your stomach Play it safe and eat comfort foods 6 etc, etc, etc Comment from : kauaiboy5o |
I'm watching from the Philippines 🇵🇭 Thanks for the video!! Comment from : Jaja Masorong |
Another tip from me is to say nothing I did with a friend a tour in Sacchsenhausen concentration camp and the Americans did not nothing about German companies who supported the SS Like VW, Opel They were surprised that brIBM supported Hitler and that Henry Ford was an Antisemit Things which my friend and I know by heart Comment from : I love London |
Google isn't good in translation And don't wear stuff where you can be easily recognised as an American Try to speak British English I had to run away in London when I heard Americans speaking to eachother I hate this kind of EnglishbrbrAt the Tegel airport it was easy for me to identify Americans Comment from : I love London |
I would love for you to put together a video on foods in the different European countries I don’t mean kinds of food you’ll find but more like eating traditions We were in Zurich in December and finding a place that wasn’t a “sit down, white table cloth, full on place setting” meal was literally impossible Also, trying to find a late lunch really anywhere in Europe is also not possible We needed up eating at the main train station a couple of times (which I didn’t hate) 😂 When we were in Salzburg we got turned away from two restaurants for lunch I suspect it’s because they wanted to close down between lunch and dinner No big deal, we went to Augustiner Braustubl where I discovered Leberkäse Comment from : Ann |
Hey Man, on your intro logo Ukraine pictured without Crimea It's disgusting Your country was a warrant of Ukraine and picturing Ukraine without Crimea equal to supporting of russian terrorism Are you a terrorist supporter? Comment from : Ігор Мацялко |
Just had a question regarding the ATMs I have been to Europe a handful of times and have always used the Bank ATMs successfully without incurring fees In Italy, for example, I have used the Bancomats, (not the machines labeled ATM) at the Rome airport I think you were referring to the machines that are not affiliated with a bank Am I correct in my understanding? Comment from : Rosanne Leoni |
I disagree a bit about the food I don't travel for food I don't generally care about food in America and I eat too fuel my adventure So eat whatever you want That being said, I have gone places where the food was amazing like Panama or Germany or El Salvador But I chose to eat American style food in others because I disliked the local food like in Thailand and France To reach their own Some people like the food in those places and some just love food Overall IDC Comment from : Dane Reid |
Pay for BATHROOMS!!!!! ughhhhhhh…ok…i guess😩😭 Comment from : Toko Simpie |
People are people, man Just be cool and polite and you'll be fine Mostly, I find that the Americans complaining about rude Europeans show up with the attitude that everyone in the country is their own personal tour guides and that everything different is a personal affront Also we are kinna loud, so try to be mindful of your volume lol Comment from : C43LE |
Using local greetings and short sentences are key signs of humility and respect, and it's phenomenal what you will achieve by doing so! Comment from : Hank L |

I have found the kindest people by a simple smile and use of a bit of their language I’ve had hotel people offer to do my laundry free of charge (of course I tip them) They have helped to negotiate the metro ticket machines and offer their seats to us older tourists Comment from : Shirley Cartwright |
Thank you for stating people don't hate Americans in other countries I have never experienced any negativity in several countries I have visited I met someone who has experienced it, but I assume they acted in a way to be treated poorly! Comment from : Ann Marie Jackson |
Going through most the comments i see not many people like Americans Comment from : Pierre Black |
Well, Americans are actually being recognized as Americans when they're loud and act entitled Also, never say to a European that you are of their ethnicity because you're not Just because your great great great-grandmother was born in Italy, it doesn't mean that you're Italian Comment from : Teo Paun |
American living in Germany for 4 years now I would add to your list is knowing your Credit Card PIN number When I 1st got here just before lockdowns and I had no clue what they wanted So imagine my surprise, standing in grocery store line, shopping like an American, so 200 Euro of groceries No cash, and not a clue what they where asking for a pin on my CC Also the loud American trope Here in Germany they will definitely give you a death stare, not to be mistaken as the daily "Germany Stare" which you probably could do a 30 minute video just that alone But I was talking to a Ukraine friend recently and have been told this in the past by others But the German people get really loud when they go to Spain, for example It sounds like a good time, but it's funny how back home they are act and reports I get when they go abroad Comment from : Warren T |
What amazes me is that most of this solid, practical advice is necessary It may be that I live in a privileged bubble That said, I hope the presenter dials down his intensity a few clicks when actually traveling in Europe Comment from : BGTuyau |
Love love love Rick Steves!!! Comment from : Chris K |
Economic imperialism! Unless you go to Malta, Cypress, or Gibraltar Comment from : Chris K |
Excellent video Don't be the "ugly American"relax and enjoy all the new things you will experience You do improve you experience by learning a few key phrases for example, always say Bonjour when you enter a store or restaurant France it is a custom there and goes a long way for how you are treated Yes get money from a bank and not on the street Also, an Amazon Prime or Amazon Visa card does not charge foreign transaction fees Comment from : John Weddel |
14:33 Exactly! Comment from : Kessa S |
Nik, I've watched several of your videos and am very impressed by your recommendations and ability to communicate clearly, thoughtfully, and respectfully Fantastic workbrI'm impressed that your videos aren't about "look at how cool my wife and I are because of our travel," or "buy this thing we get a commission on" Instead, your videos and approach are (kind of like Rick Steves) very inviting with the desire to help people have wonderful cultural experiences Bravo! Comment from : Jon W |
I love Pimsleur, too Plus, you can usually find them at public libraries, especially for the major European languages Comment from : Jon W |
👍👌👏 Comment from : lucia garcia |

I just want to make a correction to one of your comments about what charge to use in Europe, there is no problem what so ever to use the international charge that you can get from store in us ( with two legs , you mentioned has to be three legs, not true) Comment from : Jennifer Batnes |
