Marshal Krieg
NW Spain and Thrace could not have supplied that gold to Rome The rest had to come from Africa and the near east but I suspect the ancients had secret sources of gold that we still don't know about
Comment from : Marshal Krieg

Dr Peculiar
I wonder what percentage of that Roman Gold is still in coin or jewelry form

Kenneth Hymes
To this day, mining is the hell of our world of empire and accumulated wealth The wealth of Europe was founded on the brutal enslavement and early deaths of uncountable people When you see beautiful royal silverware from Spain, or the finery of the british monarchy but not only there, when you see the very infrastructure around you, the devices and structures you cannot live without you should see the pain and death of generations We deny it to our cost Our entire way of life has sadism and sociopathy at its core It is hidden from us because we could not stand it Worse in the past? Sure, I suppose, but not at all good now We need to live differently or die, and the only sources of reliable principles are the very indigenous peoples we once drove into mines at gunpoint We think and act badly and strangely and harmfully We have to learn to share, and to live with the world that gave birth to us Or, again, die
Comment from : Kenneth Hymes

Any thoughts about precious stones from Roman jewellery and where they may have ended up? The diamonds, the sapphires, the rubies and emeralds Could there be identifiably Roman gems preserved in the Crown jewellery of European royalty or in the accumulations of the Vatican and churches?
Comment from : A Campbell

It's rather puzzling that all these irrelevant and young civilizations were mentioned and Egypt, the most mined country in the world today, and the oldest continuous civilization, first Nation-state, first civilization really, upon whose letters the Romans adopted their writing system and by which the shape of these letters is derived from is omitted

There is likely no gold from Rome in most devices If you look at the available gold and silver Roman coins that exist today, it’s very clear that the overwhelming majority, probably 99 or more were lost Just as now $100 million worth of coins every year is lost in the US alone

I'm sure theres a good chance theres a bunch of roman gold here in the US as we have almost a third of the world's supply of (currently used as) monetary gold and it contains, probably anyway, very little newly mined gold as its (supposedly anyway) been closed for a long time now
Comment from : identifies

Stanislav Kostarnov
what about trying to use the salaries and prices in Rome to estimate how much gold was in the economy, minus the Far Eastern Trade, I would say most of it remained or at least returned to Europe again by the Post-Early-Colonial period though, to my knowledge, the vast majority of gold in the pre-Industrial world was from the Inca, this vast influx being only being surpassed by Siberian, South African, Mid-Asian & other golds by the second decade of the 20th century
Comment from : Stanislav Kostarnov

Chris McLeod
On a similar note (and mostly to feed the algorithm, belatedly) since oxygen is never destroyed; every breath you take was probably also inhaled and exhaled by any number of ancient figures, like Caesar or Jesus

Comment from : tricky1992000

Michael J Del Toro
I think the estimates in this video are conservative The only basis I have for this is the dilution of gold and silver content in coinage, the refusal of foreign nations to accept the debased currency and the constant complaints of historians and contrmporsries of the drain of Roman gold for luxury items
Comment from : Michael J Del Toro
