I buy generic everything! I don't see much difference, except for the price which is WAY too high for name brand Comment from : CLTserendipity |
I tried house brand coffee and threw it out, it was so bad I also prefer name brand cheeses, either Tillamook or Cabot's For a long time we got house brand natural peanut butter but got very tired of how loose and oily it is, so we switched back to Smucker's However, we happily buy things like generic rice, beans, frozen fruit, canned evap or sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, etc Probably more than half of our groceries are house brands Because of this we don't feel bad on those odd occasions when we choose a name brand Comment from : Paul & Carla Chapman |
Something I switched on my grocery list was buying fruits and veggies that were in season so in winter I don't put Strawberries in my cart but buy apples and bananas it saves us a ton of money! Comment from : Vanessa Xavier |
agreed Oreos are there own thing Comment from : Heather Hodnett |
I drink only name brand sodas The off brand sodas just do not taste as good Comment from : Maeglin |
My primary one is Sara Lee Artesano bread I have weird taste issues and this was the first bread I'd had in years that I actually liked I'm also brand loyal to Oreos and Lesueur sweet peas I prefer Campbell's Cream of Chicken soup but I only buy it on very good sale Comment from : Kadinh13 |
I shop around and taste test house brands on things I buy often, X store's generic of a given thing might taste better than Y store's generic, depending on their private label recipe adjustments and/or the overpriced name brand each is mimicking/being repackaged as So I end up "brand loyal" to a house brand on some products Comment from : myrabeth77 |
I buy onions, chop them up and freeze them! Great for cooking! Comment from : Brenda Witcher |
Great value thick n creamy mac n cheese is pretty good! Of course I melt a slice of American cheese in it at the end!🤣also, I think off brand graham crackers have a saw dust consistency! Nabisco Honey Grahams only! BUT ,you know what they say about opinions!🤗 Comment from : Brenda Witcher |
Mutti brand pizza sauce!! Comment from : Keltie Fox |
Nutella Comment from : Hemda Frankl Rotem |
I love name brand Graham crackers over generic because it holds up better when I dip it in milk I also prefer cheeto puffs in name brand because it tastes more like the cheese powder I like Comment from : Stephanie S |
Oh my goodness your taste testers are adorable! Comment from : Leigh Page |

I’d love to see a video on adult work lunches for a week on a budget, it’s so hard to find things that aren’t boring every day And I always over spend 😅 Comment from : Marisa |
There’s not much I won’t try the generic of, but I really like Ben & Jerry’s ice cream so when I buy ice cream, that’s the brand I tend to go forbrbrI used to be loyal to Silk unsweetened milk, but in recent years, every store I shop at has their own and it’s really really similar so I mostly go with the generic brbrThere are instances where I like one generic brand over another Like, I prefer Shaw’s grainy mustard to other generic brands, but I like Hannaford’s spicy barbecue sauce the most Comment from : Layla |
I’ll always buy Dukes Mayo and Fiesta brand seasonings! 😁 I loved this video and I will always buy store brand over name brand when I can… I would rather save money than stay loyal to a company Comment from : Britney Voelkel |
Bigelow tea over house brand tea every time House brand tea had to be given away or thrown out Comment from : Mindi Wilhelm |
Our local Blue Plate Mayonnaise always for me Comment from : Red Gingerbread Pam |
I love your videos, I watch them all the time! I thought I might add a helpful tip when comparing prices, look at the price per ounce In walmart, it's usually that number on the right with the orange highlight in the background on the price tag on the shelf that way it doesn't matter the size of the package so much if you just want the best deal much easier than trying to do the math in the store :) Comment from : Melissa June |
Any brand is ok if it works and is cheaper We have learned to use ketchup, brown sugar instead of sloppy joe canned mix Saves a few bucks Comment from : br g |
I have been finding Bougie Brand of eggs and butter cheaper than our area grocery chain I figure they r perishable and with prices getting higher, they may be trying to move their products Comment from : Wash Ur Butt Soaps |
I was raised by a thrifty woman, so "house brands for most things" is how I was raised I don't "try" generics I "try" name brands, usually for sale price or availability reasons Occasionally I switch because of satisfaction with the quality Over the years, I've learned there are a handful of products where it's worth it for me to spend extra on name brand, and some cases where there is a noticeable quality difference, but not a noticeable price difference, so "springing for name brand" isn't "springing" for much brbrFor me, and I suspect this is also true of most people who have been trying to shop frugally for a while, there are a few things where getting the name brand is important, a few things where a specific store's generic is your first choice, and a whole lot of things that fall under the heading of "Eh, whichever is cheaper per ounce will be fine," which usually results in buying house brand Comment from : LucyLynette |
You hit the nail on the head The fewer and more natural the ingredients, the more similar a generic is to a name brand Honestly, I am a big advocate of generics They're usually great Comment from : Sally Kauth |
Im so happy to have come across this channel and video! I used some of these tips yesterday, shopped the mailer/ad deals and saved $30 at my overpriced neighborhood market So excited Thanks for all you do Mindy Comment from : McDadi |
Blue Bell ice cream all the way!!! Comment from : April Hamilton |
Thank you for your ongoing easy to follow recipes, I have been watching your channel for awhile now due to the extreme boredom I have with the endless question 'what's for dinner?' |
Try the great value artisan mac and cheese They're so tasty :) Comment from : Brittany Geren |
I just tried the Walmart sourdough bread and it's good for toast and a turkey sandwich My husband was told by a coffee distributor that most coffees are made at the same plant, but just put in a different package so, we tried generic coffee at Walmart and Aldi and it was no different to us Comment from : Bridget Woodward |
You definitely save on generic spices Comment from : Bridget Woodward |
unpopular opinion: i love the great value macaroni and cheese Comment from : shannenexe |
For our household we cannot substitute Hellmans Mayo nothing compares But other than that, I almost always get house brand Comment from : Sarahs Emporium |
You are so right, theres something about oreos and kraft mac and cheese that just can't be replicated! I'm the same with Ritz crackers, there is just something about the name brand ones that have that nice buttery taste That and a lot of sodas- generic brands taste fine, but not exactly the same Comment from : peepytime |
I generally buy all the store brand items because very often they are comparable love the video ty for doing an exact comparison can't wait to show my husband Comment from : NJ B |
Starbuck Veranda Blend Comment from : NJ B |
Never had to use it but know Aldi, Walmart and Kroger have satisfaction guarantee on their store brands so can return anything you're not happy with so have nothing to lose by trying them Comment from : Lisa Haddad |
TIP If you order ALL your groceries online for pickup, many times they will run out of the GV and give you name brand for the same GV price Comment from : Heaven Lee |

Great ideas to save money on groceries Comment from : Gloria Peel |

I’m brand loyal to Miracle Whip! Comment from : nicole thoreson |
Brand loyal to ranch dressing (Kens), although HEB makes a fresh in house ranch that's delicious but it expires fast so i usually just buy it for gatheringsalso brand loyal to greek Yogurt (chobani full fat) Comment from : stephfisher |
Philadelphia cream cheese!!! I've tried store brands, but there is a big difference! Especially when making a cheesecake Comment from : Ginger Eiss |
I used to buy the 60 count box of eggs bc my husband could eat eggs all day every day It was $462 for several years I went to buy some the other day and they were $1042!!! I haven't bought eggs for a while because we have chickens but I needed more than our 3 little chickens can pump out this particular week lol Comment from : SusieG |
We buy store/house brand for many things Like you - mostly basic items with limited ingredients But there are other things we are very brand loyal on I find that those items are usually about texture rather than just taste I figure that when we buy the less expensive brands for most things, we can budget for those brand name items that we like better Comment from : lynn2574 |
This is true most of the time, but if you ignore sales sometimes you’ll miss the cheaper one by not paying attention Comment from : Bethany McLean |
My name brand non-negotiable is definitely A-1 sauce and Heinz ketchup My family would say Oreos as well I do think name brand seasonings tend to be more flavorful than store brand (though the glass bottle organic great value is good, but the plastic bottle regular is just colorful powder lol) My kid likes Kraft Mac n Cheese better if he's eating it plain but he usually doctors it up so the store brand is fine Comment from : KRISTAN KREMER |
I'm totally fine with generics for food, but very brand loyal to Tide laundry detergent I have tried other brands and all others I've tried make me break out in hives, so I know there is something different about it (I also have a friend who is only allergic to Tide, so whatever it is about them, it's definitely unique) I also notice that it truly does help keep our clothes lasting longer than when I've used other brands With other brands I noticed more fading and that stains were harder to remove But with Tide, even though it's expensive, I can also just wash all our clothes together in cold water and they come out perfectly fine, no wasting my time sorting separate loads Comment from : Stephanie Giese |
I will always get brand name Oreos, but part of that is because I haven't found generic gluten free Oreos I've had that issue with a lots of products I'm just always on the lookout for sales on the gluten free name brands that don't have a generic counterpart I LOVE the great value gluten free flour, though It's such a steal in my area Comment from : kkuhn3 |
Great video I don't mind store brand for many things but there are some things I won't give Red Gold Ketchup, Miracle Whip, Hellman's Mayo, Toilet Paper I love a 'regular' oreo (not all the flavored ones) I looked at the price this week and about passed out! Comment from : Dana Tuttle |
check the back label on products and sometimes you can tell if it was from the same factory by the location it was from therefore the exact same product with a label switch Comment from : C&C Creations |
I usually buy generic or house brands, but I am brand loyal to Contadina tomato paste It is thicker, naturally sweeter, and I think even tastes a bit fresher Comment from : Holly Whiteside |
It's been so long since I brought sugar that I can't hardly believe the price of it Comment from : Beth Catt |
Worcestershire always has to be Lea and Perrins!!!! Comment from : Kristi Miller |
I am brand loyal to Quaker flavored oatmeal Great value is just not the same Also Thomas's English muffins, no one compares to the original taste Comment from : Tyler and Ashley |
I will not compromise with Doritos store brands of Doritos just don't compare Comment from : Craft Mom |
Philadelphia cream cheese tried more than once to buy off brand nothing compares for me Comment from : Elisa Levy |
I've just subbed a few days ago so I'm sorry if it's already been answered, is your son's name Brick?brMy item that I need to have brand name is miracle whip I've tried switching to regular mayo (I'm the only one who eats mayo type items) and I just don't like them They taste bland to me Also, I've never seen a store brand version Other than that, I'm fine with store brands If I'm craving something specific, I might get it, like the Pepperidge farm cinnamon swirl bread Comment from : Lisa Pop |
I've always bought store brand foods When my kids were little they were used to store brand boxed Mac n cheese which isn't the same color as name brand, they refused to eat the Kraft brand because it was too orange 😂 Comment from : Aubrey Jackson |
If you normally shop once a week, change it to once every 10 days I guarantee you will save over $1000 a year Comment from : Karla britfeld |
I've had issues with store brand peanut butter it often doesn't taste right Comment from : Susan Sherwood |
Dawn dish soap and Ritz crackers are the two that I think of off the top of my head Great video we definitely buy store brand whenever we can! Costs are thru the roof! Comment from : demitra43 |
The avian flu is impacting egg and poultry prices and availability Comment from : lovespink64 |
I could careless if it's name brand or store brand but Tea Bags My husband "has" to have Liptons tea bags He doesn't know it but sometimes I'll buy the store brand and just put it in the other box If he can taste a difference he has never told me Comment from : Rhonda Humbers |
There is NOTHING we have to have in our household if something is out of stock, we find a comparable item or we change up our plan I have price points on everything and we are not willing to spend over that Luckily we reverse meal plan so we have plenty of stock and we just shop sales/mark downs/etc Comment from : Dragon Fly |
Yikes! The mark up is crazy!!! Comment from : Aly Richardson |
Brand loyal to Doritos & Philadelphia Cream cheese BUT will ONLY buy if it’s on sale lol Comment from : spdychevy |
Where are you? Comment from : ValentineGarden |
I am brand loyal to Dr Pepper, Heinz ketchup, hidden valley ranch, and egglands best eggs I could probably list more but I have recently been trying to make those cheaper swaps My husband saw me getting meijer brand organic milk versus fairlife milk the other day and was like ??? Lol I have yet to taste test it though Definitely just being aware of costs since all this inflation has helped tremendously and the few cheaper swaps easily make up for the more expensive name brand items I want Comment from : Bianca Hunt |
The Aldi brand Oreo's are so close to name brand, I can't tell the difference I also thought the Walmart Great Value blue box mac n cheese was 99 the same as Kraft Worth a try! Comment from : Beth Weil |
I buy mostly generic, with the exception of tuna I love my starkist But I get it at Sams, so a better price I do prefer name brand oreos, but since I don't buy them all the time I figure its okay! Comment from : Meg Duffy |
Name brand ranch dressing Hidden Valley all the way I agree with the Oreos but will still eat the generic Vanilla Oreos though Kraft mac n cheese is what my family likes too Comment from : Jenny Roberts |
Do you get to write off your grocery bills, becuase it's content and YT is your "job" Honest question, no mean tone intended Comment from : L B |
I just found you and this is the third video I've seen of you You actually say things I've never thought of or considered! You may not think that's a big deal but I'm the same age as you and I'm still at home with the kids, trying to manage our budget with not a lot of money; I've heard basically everything out there I've read it all, seen it all, and thought I was doing it all But you had suggestions that actually might work for me! That's huge! I already bake and make everything I can at home, I never use name brand anything, I compare ounces for every deal at the store, you name it, I've done it all So I thank you for actually helping me! New subscriber now Comment from : Paula Larsen |
I’ll buy store brand anytime the option is available my husband joked/complained that my cart is nothing but store brand 😅 I let him grocery shop one week and he never complained again once he seen the price difference lol But I do agree that there are certain items you just have to buy name brand Comment from : Amethyst |
Cute kids!! I wouldn't be able to afford grocerys if I bought the store brands The only store brand that I won't compromise on is cheerios The knock off cheerios are nasty I only buy cheerios when they are on sale because it is almost 5 dollars a box brThank you your videos I enjoy them and I learn a lot too! Comment from : Karen Powell-Brooks |
Mayo (bestfoods/hellmans) and ketchup (organic heinz) will always be name brand Always Comment from : StellarAmanda |
It helps to store the discount rack bread in the refrigerator so it won't mold I toast our sandwiches anyway so it doesn't bother me that it gets cold in the fridge To answer your question about name brand, I don't have to have any name brand Looking at my bank statement feels better than any name brand taste difference Oh wait, I don't like off brand candy bars or something yucky like cheap Easter chocolates, what's that brand from Dollar store that's cheap, Palmer chocolate? Elmer? You can tell they don't add enough chocolate, better off just buying semi sweet chocolate chips great value Comment from : Jamil Gotcher |
Thank you, thank you for doing this video I am a believer in generics with most everything One for the reason that April pointed out with the candy and if you look up dog food manufacturers there are only 5/6 companies that make all the different brands Same food different packaging and great marketing! Making people think it’s better Those who get sucked in waste a lot of money Appreciate your channel and the cause you support Mindy Keep up the good work Comment from : Paula Flatt |
Great video! We always at least try the store brand to see if we like it! Comment from : Shelly Billingsley |
I don’t know if you guys know this but a lot of times show me the store brands are made in the same factories as the namebrand they did market the packaging a bit differently This is what I’ve read online That some of the namebrand factories also produce stuff or store brands Comment from : The autistic artist |
There’s your proof Or brand is cheaper and they taste just as good on most products The only thing that I would buy store brand will be Oreos Comment from : The autistic artist |
I knew this and this was a good reminder I live in a small town and make daily trips to the store and just pay for convenience The inflation of food is horrible but I have not cared until this video I have to be more diligent and drive the extra five miles to save money Comment from : susan whitbeck |
Great source of good info! Comment from : Kathleen Hardwick |
I am brand loyal to Heinz ketchup I would not ever buy any other brand Comment from : LeAnne Coffey |
Wow this was really impressive!! thank you for going through the effort to do this the information is absolutely incredible Comment from : LeAnne Coffey |
Thanks for doing this video real eye opener!!! Even though I’m pretty much down to buy generic but it’s good to actually see that I am saving And it’s not all in my head Comment from : Connie martinez |
