J Tay
Hopefully the organ will be back by 2025!
Comment from : J Tay

Tim Stoffel
I've had the privilege of hearing this grand instrument put through its paces twice, but not since before the fire of 2001 Great pipe organs like this need to be heard-- and felt-- in person to really appreciate them Their acoustic power is measured in horsepower! So vast is this space that the mighty State trumpet has to be played 2/3rd of a second before you want to hear it at the console
Comment from : Tim Stoffel

Eric Kaspriskie
My favorite Christian holiday My favorite church My favorite organ My favorite hymn This must be my favorite video
Comment from : Eric Kaspriskie

Drew Neal
The organ is beyond magnificent I wish we could have seen the processional (and edited out the talkers and the one off key singer) It was truly a powerful and glorious work

gmc0422
Those State Trumpets never fail to give me goosebumps brbrVery interesting fanfares brbrThis hymn when well-performed brings me to tears, even when I'm leading it on the organ on Easter Morning at my own parish churchbrbrAnd yes, Glen Kissel, the persons' singing leaves a lot be desired brbrOnly one comment, singing this hymn at this tempo in that vast church turns things to mud I would have slowed the tempo down considerably
Comment from : gmc0422

tambrosia
Thank you for postingbrBRAVO what a wonderful organist and GRAND Organ
Comment from : tambrosia

Kent allyn
the emotion is evident in the music, and itself, stands alone as a deep part of the whole experience The interludes and fanfares are not played only b/c they're beautiful, which they are The hymn is experienced while a procession of liturgical ministers, led by the cross & (if you're lucky) incense(ever hear the phrase "holy smoke?" church incense is the origin), moves slowly, inexorably toward the altar Music, the scent of holy smoke, and the presence The feeling that u are a part of something that's about to happenthe procession moves with purposeful reverence, as the organ moves into improvisation and adding of pipes, the altar is being recognized as a resident symbol of the sacrifice to come The smoke swirls upward visibly filling the space above the altar THE ORGAN ROARSmoving into the last verse where the choir elevates its descant to join the organ in harmonious celebration! It is breathtaking
Comment from : Kent allyn

Chief Davis Teitelbaum
I love this hymn of Christ and Easter
Comment from : Chief Davis Teitelbaum

Comment from : Dan Voight

pyriph
The people chatting were annoyingso disrespectful It can't wait until after??
Comment from : pyriph

Charles Davis
One of the tricks a good church organist learns is while the congregation is singing play the pedals in a kind of staccato way It helps the congregation to feel the pulse/rhythm of the tune and prevents the tune from getting slower and slower Wonderful improv
Comment from : Charles Davis

WAX6428
Boy would I love to revoice those en chamades with my F - 250 in the parking lot, it would be in four wheeled drive just for fun
Comment from : WAX6428

Michael Hoerig
The tempo is not too fast You play the organ well The only criticism I would have is that your tempo is not steady On the first few verses, you would 'grab' the next phrase a fraction of a second early, imparting the feeling that you were 'rushing' The last verse was most definitely 'faster and faster' Other than the tempo criticisms, excellent hymn playing!
Comment from : Michael Hoerig

Rheinlander95
The f# in measure 18 was a quarter beat fast
Comment from : Rheinlander95

Gabriel Cavalheiro
Lindo apesar de ser uma catedral protestante e ser um hino protestante mas eu me arrepio toda a vez que ouço
Comment from : Gabriel Cavalheiro

Moti Nowrangi

I can picture Almighty God sitting on a golden chair, n all His angels n archangels, n saints, all adoring Him n this sort of music being played

Comment from : Ralph Heimburger

Ann Savinski
Fantastic! - should have a professional recording made of that!
Comment from : Ann Savinski

Chris Vee
Impressive ! Outstanding performance
Comment from : Chris Vee

John Robinson
That is the perfect tempo, although surprising you can manage it in such a large space!brI regret that you can hear a single voice singing, though
Comment from : John Robinson

Ringer Adam
I would actually pay for an album just full of fanfares
Comment from : Ringer Adam

thxdts
I would love to hear this WITHOUT the congregation singing and the very annoying talking in parts!! Awesome organist!
Comment from : thxdts

Nancy M
I was at mass on Easter Sunday 1984 or 85, I heard a group playing behind the altar, was it Edgar Winter?brThat's the last time in NY If I come back I will stop inbrThank You Nancy Meurlott
Comment from : Nancy M

Tim Hamlin
To this day, this performance brings tears to my eyes How wonderful it would be to be able to hear this in person
Comment from : Tim Hamlin

John Ruiz
I totally agree! This is not the only recording I heard from there where people are trying to talk over the music! Why the living (beep) do people talk during a service!?!? Especially when music is playing! Stop, listen, and enjoy the moment for the love of the Father!! People from NYC, and Jersey and other big cities are rude hyper and can't stand to sit back, relax, and NOT Talk!! I don't think they know how to! This recording would have been so much better without the talk! Hats off to the organist and his superb playing!
Comment from : John Ruiz

Contrafactum
Wow, even at St John the Divine people can't shut-the-bleep up
Comment from : Contrafactum

Jerry
Love the interlude and last verse !
Comment from : Jerry

jcastano
Perfect tempo Too slow -- as many play -- and the place sounds like a funeral This is upbeat and joyful Breathe deep and belt it out! This is worship!
Comment from : jcastano

Grant Leitma
What a powerful opening to a great hymn of Christian faith!
Comment from : Grant Leitma

Orionman8
What a rude high tempo Terrible Are the organist scared to miss the train Or something The people cannot sing because it is to fast
Comment from : Orionman8

GraceToast
lol
Comment from : GraceToast

David Smith
No doubt this guy is phenomenally talented and a great organist, but guys for God's sakeslow downthe congregation can hardly keep up with you That is just too fast for such an enormous reverb
Comment from : David Smith

kiqw
Great choir and organ but we could have done without the out of tune woman who was too close to the camera microphone  :-(
Comment from : kiqw

Joyce Schultz
Wow, for those of us that play on our Allen Organ's in church, it's truly amazing!  It inspires us to get more out of our organs than just the usual stops  Even though obviuosly we couldn't replicate the depth of what was done here Thank you for putting it on You tube
Comment from : Joyce Schultz

greg ingotham
Bravo! What a fantastic "treatment" (as Gerre Hancock would say) of the Easter Hymn  I love the balance the CSJD organ has between the fire in the en chamade and the depth in the pedal  One without the other would be too muchbut together they are amazing  Skinner and Quimby knew what they were doing!
Comment from : greg ingotham

Madeleine Baier
This Guy Rocks
Comment from : Madeleine Baier

Bob Addison
Good job!  Amen!
Comment from : Bob Addison

Mark Gourley
Why does the Cathedral have the mics next to the worst singers!!??
Comment from : Mark Gourley

Thomas Mowbray
The hymn is played way too fast for congregational singing in that grand space
Comment from : Thomas Mowbray

RPSteam
Where's Dot?? She was really accomplished on that pipework
Comment from : RPSteam

Tom Tallis
Yakitty, yakitty, yak The organ is playing so loud we have to yell!
Comment from : Tom Tallis

Holden Alee
I would love to know who is talking during the improvisation between verses three and fourno doubt something very important was happening that required immediate discussion The music, however, is ABSOLUTELY glorious This is what worship is about!
Comment from : Holden Alee

Paul Fretz
I am pretty sure a fire came through there when they were restoring the place Maybe this wasn't what it was before, but sounds pretty good to me
Comment from : Paul Fretz

Organ Pipework
Not as warm? You're hearing a "canned" sound on youtube Hie thee to New York and hear it IN PERSON, to get the real sound No alterations in pipe scales or voicing was done by Quimby Any old, fat sound to which you refer may have been part of the 1910 E M Skinner and nobody misses that organ, it all It had many drawbacks
Comment from : Organ Pipework

john uhr-henry
ANOTHER GREAT PRESENTATION BY THIS CHOIR GREAT ORGANIST WORK
Comment from : john uhr-henry

Steven Mildred
Beautiful music
Comment from : Steven Mildred

Ben Dixon
I agree Kent Tritle will not willingly acknowledge what a service he rendered for the substantial number of guest organists (invited by Bruce Neswick) that he "released" from the recitals schedule
Comment from : Ben Dixon

kriszticfr
Why have that suit the?
Comment from : kriszticfr

Brian Crow
Heaven forbid the organist show the emotions that the celebration of the Resurrection and the playing of a majestic piece of music generate I second chupa's comment
Comment from : Brian Crow

Brian Crow
One can even see that the organist has a closed circuit TV on the top of the console so that he can watch the procession AND the music at the same time! Not only this, the improv between stanza 3 and stanza 4 of this hymn is very appropriate in any setting as stanza 4 is doxological with its reference to the Holy Trinity so in honor and reverence to the Trinity, the organist will add some extra brilliance In this case it was 2:30 of this so the procession could conclude
Comment from : Brian Crow

David Jamison
This is a seriously great performance of this great hymn I wish was there live to experience it when it happened
Comment from : David Jamison

wpiv926
Went to a church service here in 2011 The approximately 8 second reverberation on the organ is simply breathtaking Quite a moving service I plan to go back one day
Comment from : wpiv926

missbraun03
I don't need the singing, just give me more beautiful organ!
Comment from : missbraun03

bombarde1701a
I have the new recordingsbut it sounds different
Comment from : bombarde1701a

Organ Pipework
Go to Quimby Organ site and go from there The stoplist is shown and includes the small number of additions in 2008, for which there was no money in 1954
Comment from : Organ Pipework

bombarde1701a
Unfortunately the organ doesnt sound as warm as it did before the rebuild I dont care what Quimby sayshe made some changes Things were alteredenough to notice that the organ is much more bright I still love this organ very much but miss the old fat, warm sound
Comment from : bombarde1701a

Gradus Quia
The technique is very old, before "your side fo the pond" had a religious identity The English cathedral organists perfected the interstanza improv on metered hymns; the French had been doing it on chant for several hundred years Anglophiles either side of the pond tend to feel cheated if the organist doesn't tart it up at all
Comment from : Gradus Quia

Vaughn Richardson
Dude, why are you saying this? Cultural thing? "Most Brits"? I used to sing in the choir at Carlisle cathedral and the organist improvises during hymns and in between verses You can't make statements that you don't know are true or not I'm a Dir of Music at a large parish church, I know what it's like having to improvise It can sometimes take up to 3 minutes for the whole procession to get in the stalls Of all the cathedrals/Churches/Minsters I've visited or sang at, they all do it mate
Comment from : Vaughn Richardson

notredameswarrior1
Great recording quality Was this just from a camera? If it was very impressive quality
Comment from : notredameswarrior1

John Morissette
Is there a cantor at the mic? Hear her voice
Comment from : John Morissette

dreadnaught90
philip: I ( a Canadian Anglican) have been in the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York Cityit's about a quarter of a mile from the west door to the high altar No wonder some hymn improvisation is needed during the entrance procession! Raymond Nagem is a excellent improv organist in anyone's book Maybe the C of E style is a lot more restrained and refined but it's good to see such exuberance demonstrated by Mr Nagem and the congregation on an Easter Sunday morning!
Comment from : dreadnaught90

organisten
Fair enough Neither is these reeds "my cuppa tea" either
Comment from : organisten

TubaMirabilis123
I also like the big, dark reeds on the York, St Paul, King's College organ, etc However, this is not an English organ The dark, opaque sound of English reeds wouldn't work in that room
Comment from : TubaMirabilis123

organisten
I am not sure I'd want to I agree with the comment Of course it is all personal taste, but I don't like these reeds The flues are lovely however I agree Much prefer the snorting reeds at places like York Minster!
Comment from : organisten

organisten
Wonderful - just spoiled by everybody chatting away using the organ music as wallpaper music "Oh missis so and so said this and that" "O you don't say" I just wish people would SHUT up!
Comment from : organisten
