I remember recording this on VHS way back in the day I was so psyched to see Star Trek VI! I bought a ton of those 25th Anniversary trading cards, too Reruns of TOS, the feature films on VHS, TNG at its peak What a great time to be a fan Comment from : emilcorday |
As for Shatner's performance as a presenter here, I keep wanting to tell him, "Bill, you're the greatest Starfleet commander in the entire universe, but you'd look even greater than you already do if you wouldn't keep your mouth agape while you're not talking" It does look kinda pained or strained Guess he couldn't wait for it to be his turn again when Nimoy was talking, silently reading Nimoy's lines from the prompter as well in order to come back in at the right moment Comment from : tlatosmd |
Was there something edited out of this? I have a recollection of William Shatner briefly talk about the new upcoming Star Trek series in development (which would become Deep Space Nine), specifically mentioning a planned "Science officer in a rocket-powered wheelchair" (I believe that quote is exact) Comment from : Michael Ducharme |
I've just noticed shatner is wearing a yellow type suit and nimoy is in a blue one 🤔 Comment from : Stewart mcminn |
Hi Stephen! I want you to know that I watched this Special with my kids this year I saw it on TV in South Africa when I was young I am now a father of three, surrounded my Trekkies, and they loved watching this just as I did Comment from : DHvandenB420 |
My favorite growing up Comment from : Admiral Kirk |
During the first three seasons run of TOS (of my ages 8 to 10), I was a trekkie From its initial TV syndication run (on many a local UHF station nationwide) in the fall of 1969, I became a trekker as I boldly moved on and got a life beyond Star Trek, but remained still fascinated and entertained by the expanding and evolving genre I'm still trekkin' after all these years Comment from : Michael Alexander |
Think about this: for the first 25 years of the franchise, Star Trek was a pop culture powerhouse gaining more and more momentum That was with only 3 seasons of TOS, 2 seasons of TAS, the first 4 seasons of TNG and the first 6 movies--THAT WAS IT NOW (unfortunately) it has sank into borderline pop culture irrelevance The only x-factor was Gene Roddenberry being alive the first 25 years (1966-1991) Comment from : Patrick Dodds |
I had this on VHS when I was a kid I must have watched this over 100 times Hated having to fast-forward through those damn commercials! Comment from : spartacus36526 |
i love the way they had the movie posters all hanging next to each other it actually influenced me to do the same so bought the Trek I-VI posters (27x40) around that time 91 and had just enough wall space to have them next to each other (tracking down VI was abit difficult at the time as none of the comic stores seemed to have it) brThat era of the 25th anniversary was such a happy time :) reading about the gradual making of Trek VI in the letters page of the Trek DC comics (which had started buying every month) and in the fan club magazine (with the ever expanding enter page catalogue of trek goodies to order: altho not for uk) , the various 25th ann magazines like starlogs sliver cover special edition, and all the new TOS CIC vhs and model kits with the 25th logo plus you had the Unification 2 parter and this doc (gives a glimpse of VI) and eventually a few months later you had Trek VI which felt like the best film so far! (and was buying all the VI stuff: starlog magazine, DC comic, novel, making of book, and of course the final version 27x40 one sheet!) Comment from : bozo the clown |
8:28 he says 'with Mr Spock and myself in tow' confirming what we all knew - Shatner IS kirk and Kirk IS shatner Comment from : bozo the clown |
hey maybe the sorry state of star trek in 2020 is one of those dark alternate time lines, and at the last second in a desperate battle in hollywood, some great writer will give his life as he resets the timeline, and we'll all be watching real star trek again, never realizing the horrors that were witnessed the first time around Comment from : AMC2283 |
25:50 Whoopi described what made Star Trek unique and hopefulbrbrbrFast forward to 2020: "There were millions of lives at stake" "*Romulan* lives" /facepalm Comment from : James Goss |

The "Trekker" thing at about 43 minutes in drives me nuts It's so pretentious We like Star Trek We're Trekkies Trek is a nerdy show so we're nerds at least in that way That's fine We don't have to do the "I demand to be taken seriously" thing We like a specific TV show That's all Let's not inflate our egos too much here I like Star Trek You like Star Trek Star Trek is a nerdy show for nerds I know, I am one Just calm down We're Trekkies and that's fine Comment from : Hezekiah Ramirez |

it is funny that someone that didn't believe in God, made star trek The entire thing about star trek is that they are looking for what is out there They are open minded to see if perhaps something bigger than us is out there Comment from : fireball0 |

A Trekie is someone who likes Star Trek on an elementary level, just for the fun it A Trekker is someone who is interested in the concept of Star Trek, the stories, characters, relationships, politics, timelines, and might speak some Klingon I am a Trekker I am someone who knows that Captain Kirk is wanted by Starfleet Temporal Violations for 17 temporal violations A trekkie would not know that Comment from : I Bosquez |
My stepdad worked at a local CBS TV station at the time and was able to pull this off satellite and record it to vhs for me I watched the heck out of this in the early 90s Comment from : Ernest Sanchez |
Star Trek already had movies come out decades earlier Several of them You know why reboots are so easy, and Hollywood is pumping them out like kale at a hipster convention? Because it takes no effort All you have to do is copy something that someone already did, but adapt it in a way that it's now profitable to a modern audience Comment from : Mono Nonny |
Yes, the tribute to Gene was added afterwards I once was asked to do a Gene tribute for the March of Dimes that was very well received Not sure where you can find it, but I'm glad to have honored such a remarkable visionary And also rare is Patrick Stewart's tribute to Gene on the bridge, where he sings and does a little soft shoe It's a hoot, but not sure where it exists Comment from : Stephen Wolcott |
that ending from Roddenberry's last words on still gets me every time Comment from : AMC2283 |

Very well created, written, and presented Funny how even though some things have changed scientifically and culturally, this special still is up to date with the feelings for the vision of the future Thanks Stephen Comment from : mcheek27357 |

As the special's writer, I'm very pleased to see this on YouTube It brings back a lot of great memories Shatner and Nimoy were true pros, who needed very little prep to read the script They also added some input Nimoy particularly wanted strong mention of Greenpeace included Comment from : Stephen Wolcott |
