I tend to use the index nail to strum down and the thumb nail to strum up, combining arm, wrist, and fingers motion It can be very fast, ergonomic, and volatile Comment from : The Blog of Dimi |

I strum only with hands beacause i habe nylon strings and they bend when i use pick and also When im plaing single notes i always use my index finger when i need to use 2 or 3 strings as sweet child of mine begginging riff inuse index and midle finger but i can also do flamenco and fingerstyle Comment from : LIMITED EDITION |

Been playing for about 2 years, and Ive always prefered not using a pick I think i found using a pick too hard to begin so I got used to playing with my thumb Over time I've come to enjoy the sound way more than with a pick so i basically just stick to it now Comment from : Ben LeStage |
Cool tips I use thumb to strum down and first finger to strum up I really need to learn how to feel confident with a pick, too I got a thin pick and added sticky stuff to the part I hold so I won't accidentally throw it down in the middle of a song Comment from : Jes bury |

Beginner / near intermediate herebrbrFor pure rythmic guitar / strumming only when I don't use a pick I tend to press thumb and index together and strum with indexnail down, and thumbnail up (adjusting the wrist angle quite a bit I guess) Is that an OK style aswell? Comment from : ColtThrottle |

Thanks for this video I prefer playing with my fingers since I have far more control It works well for me when playing arpeggio and finger picking acoustic style stuff, but the problem I run into is when it comes time to play distinct notes (soloing, riffs, power chords, etc) I find it difficult to strike the note properly with my finger, and also I have an issue with my index finger nail becoming eroded I guess I'll just have to practice some of these technique further Comment from : graphicartdude |
I just learned to hook my index finger exactly like a pick Comment from : Lord_Beethoven |

Hi Justin Great stuff! I'm a newbie, roughly 9 months, breaking a lot of traditional rules I'm right handed though bought a lefty, feels more natural New nothing & started practicing the modern classical by Pink Floyd "Is there anybody out there", fingerstyle I'm also comfortable playing my tele, or acoustic, classical posture, cradled in the crotch Made it to the end though still needs a lot of work Missing a lot of basic skills Just started your course, learning to strum I find the pick awkward, and feel comfortable with my index finger Previously practiced also, strumming & picking "House of the Rising Son" Cool practice song! The picking arpeggio still needs work The strumming with the index sounds so cool Anyways, I'm picking up lots of great tips Just concerned about missing out on pick exercises but the index finger seems natural I even improvise in strumming with it Is it cool to be pick shy? Anyways, great stuff! Cheers! Comment from : Stanley Tesla |
I'm a classical guitarist and been playing for 25 years I delved into heavy metal recently I use my finger nail even though I first learned to play with a pick I can use a pick, but I got more dexterity and freedom without it and can play the same exact sounds when doing picking and harmonics as someone with a pick Im a player that knows how to use a pick but doesn't care for them Any experienced guitarist do the same? Let me know, just curious Comment from : Ryan Pierce |
how about if youre strumming with your middle finger? Comment from : Basichamster |

I've always strummed like how he's doing it at 09:55brIn fact almost all of the time when I'm playing an acoustic guitar, I'll play using this method brI don't move my whole arm, but rather do a pivot twist at the rist to creat my up and down strumming motions brI'm also able to do 16th or even 32th beat strums using this method as it gives me more speed Comment from : John Suggs |

Thank you for this video I"ve been practicing ukulele on my own for almost a year Love it Happen to have a guitar now and it was to big I thought at first but I like the sound I can make some Don't want to use a pick and practicing my own sounds with thumb and other fingers with out guidance as its just a start Glad to know thats ok and that ppl do different techniques Maybe I'll get past an E cord one day Right now I like the sound of strumming thin cords and picking and thick cords and picking Just realized that with such a huge instrument I can actually do that Thanks again from a 50 year old who just loves learning and need the sound for my own peace of mind Comment from : Frizzy Dizzy Creations |
Picked up guitar for the first time, held it right way, strummed it via thumb, and my left hand is useless at frets, I might just hold it left handed Comment from : Nobody |
I’ve been trying to play with a pick for so long, but i just couldn’t get the sound I wanted It always sounded too harsh, too loud, and I couldn’t really tell where my hand was in relation to the strings well because I’m a very tactile person It put me off from continuing to pursue the guitar because I just couldn’t get it But trying this out has really inspired me to keep going! My strumming sounds a lot more consistent and it’s exactly how I imagined playing a guitar would feel with my fingers on the strings I just want to strum some tunes on my back porch haha, and if I come across a song I want to play that would sound better with a pick, maybe I’ll pick it up again and try again Comment from : Delta Loraine |
I use the first finger and thumb technique but I do it from the wrist rotation instead of the entire arm This is pretty much a clone technique when using a pick with it's primary benefite being less right arm fatigue Comment from : Steve Colby |
Playing a steel string guitar without a pick is like playing a trap-set with no sticks It can worksort of lol If you play without a pick you should be playing a nylon string guitar Comment from : Chris Newbury |

Ty I been struggling w this I love using a pick but its rare that i can Its loud I have a toddler and my moms been working in our basement since covid Peoples schedule dont let me play loud The up strum sounds wonky and thats exactly what the problem is I couldn't get a way to sound as clear as a pick I want clarity, minus the volume This is what happens when u pick guitar up at 40 Comment from : Nicole Wyatt |
And try to avoid hitting the wood of your guitar I would add Comment from : Dirk Mertens |
great lesson thank you Comment from : Erdogan Essat |
This video was stupid I have NEVER seen anyone play with their index finger ONLY Or thumb for that matter, but at least that one is not completely stupid This doesn't seem like anything you need to be "taught" - just do what seems right for you and the song you're playing For me (most of the time), I hold my hand sorta like I'm holding a pick, but it's all very "loosey goosey", my thumb and index finger are NOT pressed together, just touching a little On the downstroke my first 3 fingers hit the strings, on the upstroke it's my thumb Nobody taught me this (never had a lesson in 50+ years) it just is what came naturally Just do what YOU can do Everything will work out Comment from : TheProgrammerGuy |
