BRYAN MEIER272XP
i pretty much agree with ya scotty on everything been working on automobiles 30 years but sorry i dont agree with the 54 ford everyone i know and see that are for sale motors are junk at 80 to 150 thousand miles id rather have the 46 or the 50 iv seen 46 motors with 400 thousand on them iv seen alot of people putting 6 cyl cummings with 6 speed manual in f250s kinda intresting im a chevy guy but i like the way ford trucks ride and i had a 98 f150 46 was great truck 4x4 was strong wish id never gotten rid of it went threw the snow better the my 96 Silverado havent own a Toyota yet think imma start with the gas saver tho either a matrix or a vibe best thing tho about older chevy trucks easy to work on and alot of parts interchange id rather have a manual tho
Comment from : BRYAN MEIER272XP

My 97 Chevy Z-71 is still going I sold it to a buddy's kid for $750 after the transmission went out for the 4th time It has over 300k miles now I'm glad GM finally got rid of that series of transmissions A fuel pump and transmissions were the only problems I had with the truck in over 200k miles
Comment from : Only Meee

Korey Hannan

So right Scotty I have a 94 GMC that I bought new (in Texas $3k cheaper than here in La) and it has 156k miles on it and all I have ever had replaced was a water pump and fuel pump and still going strong and I have offers to buy it constantly
Comment from : charlie

Goober102
My dad has a 2012 tundra with the 46, he’s got 357k on it we have a lawn care business so he’s pulling a trailer every single day with it, just about last year, got a check engine light, “pressure control solenoid d stuck off” lately the problem has been getting worse but he’s looking to trade it in and get a newer tundra got his eyes set on a 21 with the 57, other than the transmission issue, the truck is absolutely great, gonna miss it when it’s gone
Comment from : Goober102

K
Everyone knows the ford 54l engine has cam phaser problems and is expensive to fix I am discouraged that you did not mention this Every mechanic i spoke to in town for their advice on older used trucks 100 agreed that the 54 Triton was junk A few shops wont even work on them anymore because of the cam phaser issues that were major failures from 2000-2013 models They run into so many extra problems when replacing them that the bills would get too big and customers would rage over the added expense or the shops would get stuck eating labour and working at a loss
Comment from : K

Mark Beeman
Ford Much better off with 53 Silverado
Comment from : Mark Beeman

3RAN7ON

Doc1885
I had an 82 F150 with the 49L in-line 6cyl brIt had a 2 barrel carb and a 3spd automatic transmission, Regular cab, long bed (8’ bed)brI put 3/4 ton suspension on the rear I put over 300K miles on it I sold it in 96 and replaced it with another F150 with a 49L inline 6cyl It had a 4spd automatic transmission , multiport fuel injection It too was a Regular cab with a 8’ bedbrMy 82 got 21mpg and my 96 got only 18mpg The lower mpg was because of all the Smog equipment I put 1/2 million miles on that one I Loved both my 82 and my 96brIt’s too bad Ford didn’t make the old reliable 49L (300 inline 6cyl) They were so durable and extremely reliablebrbrIf automobile manufacturers would realize would build reliable vehicles, people would buy them againbrbrLook at the Tundra Our 2010 with the 57 V8 sucked on mpg, but they would easily go 800K-to the million mile mark
Comment from : Doc1885

Doc1885

Comment from : tim

Howlin Waters
on any vehicle the tranny is the Achilles Heel - if Auto-trans, will need to be rebuilt or replaced; if Standard, the clutch will eventually have to be replaced - no big deal if the engine & body are in good shape
