The flag rate system benefits more the dealer than the mechanics: mechanics should be paid a percentage of what dealers charge the customers 30 would be a good start

Currently work at a pepboys hourly trying to apply to a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer where they're only flat rate and I'm worried that I won't be fast enough At said pepboys I was a GST rarely doing brakes and alignments

Does this mean you have to book at least 80 hours before you start making more than just the hourly total you would get paid if you booked ANY number of hours? So if you book 120 hours does that mean you get paid labor rate * 40 hours + your hourly total you would have made by booking any number of hours? And is the labor rate always 2x minimum wage or does it grow by seniority?

Uh Most dealerships don’t pay your flat rate at 80 hours They pay you minimum wage if you don’t flag your 80 hours for the weeks If you flag 79 hours in two weeks, you’re paid minimum wage times 80 If you flag 80 hours, you’ll get paid your flat rate pay of $26x80 hours Kinda false info here Not all states work the way you’re saying Most don’t

can't forget about teams add up each guys flag hours and divide by team members works well in my shop each team has a at least one diag guy and the rest do the main services like flushes, brakes, state inspections, and other stuff had a nice 76 hour week for each of us

It must come down to your particular shop management or your ability to kiss ass In my experience, Toyota doesn't pay for diagnosis and their warranty labor rates are low as you would expect On top of that, several things happened as I achieved more Toyota certifications: Way less customer pay work, way more recall + warranty + campaign work, no pay raises Add in the common issues of favoritism in work dispersion, broken or missing shop equipment, wrong parts/ parts never ordered, not receiving pay for jobs, ridiculous promise times leading to constant drama, fast talking managers that do little to remedy any of the above, sabotage (unlikely but it happens), people "borrowing" tools that may or may not ever be returned, etc

Flat rate on the east coast diff Flat rate is just that flat rate Whatever hourly pay you negotiate when hired is what you are paid per book hour or hours it takes to do the job according to all data or whatever management program they use The part that u didn’t mention was sitting in you bay for 10 hours and only getting 2 hours of work that day Most places here do not pay the clock in time when you are flat rate

So it sounds like you get a minimum of your clock hours but if your doing the jobs and beating the book and even though clocked in 80 hours in 2 weeks but you bill out 120 hours of jobs you get paid that 120 hours??? im gonna start working at a bmw dealer here in cali, the min wage is 1607 in my cityim starting at hourly not flat rate or anything yet doesnt the law say if you provide your own tools you, get double min wage?? so i technically should be getting 3214 an hour? they are going to start me at 25 an hourbring your own tools, they provide the toolbox

My best pay period was 1422 hours when I was at BMW I did a few N20 engine swaps, N63Tu swap and a S65 rod bearing job along with standard stuff and I had Friday + Saturday offbrbrMy worst week was 29 hours due to moving shops, waiting on parts, and free 05 diags They didn't want to cover at least my hours there after I have lead hours in the shop without being i8 or i3 certified and still worked on them So I left and went to the Service Advisor and Service Manager side after that at another dealership

More points to add Not all dealerships pay that way All the ones I’ve ever heard of you don’t get paid to be there Period It’s what you flag only So you make lots less that way Also it’s not all depending on how hard you want it it really depends on work flow too There used to be days at my last dealer where each tech had one car a day and it was usually warranty work So you’d work an 8 hour day and flag like 05 for the whole day So you would work 8 hours and make half an hour of pay
