As an American living in Europe, Ive definitely switched over to European style The American style is so remarkably inefficient It also is reminiscent of "evil left-handedness" that was taught in schools in the old days I squirm when I watch my mother eat in this style Comment from : smithryansmith |
As an American, I do not eat like this guy Comment from : doeeyeddoll |
Brits don't generally eat a steak (like, a real steak, USDA T-Bone or New York Strips) UK's version of steak is a thinly sliced rump steak with gravy on it Comment from : jim mayors |
Brits smash everything onto the back of the fork The funniest thing I ever saw when I was in England was watching the average Brit trying to eat with just a fork It was at what was called a"stand up" dinner where there was no tables just a plate of food and a fork Comment from : Steven Bass |
British cuisine is for sh"t Why bother with all that weird upside down fork snobbery? Just throw that slop directly in the garbage🤣 Comment from : ultrakool |
Southern Appalachian here Ummm who switches hand's while eating? That's a load of bull around my parts Never in my life have I seen that 90 of meals are eaten with solely a fork, and it's turned sideways to cut through most things On the off meal where there is a meat that truly needs a fork, like steak, the knife remains in my left hand The fork is used more like a shovel, and all that stuff about moving the food onto the back of the fork seems rather awkward to say the absolute least The fork is shaped like a shovel (spade) for a reason lol If it was fully straight the bristish way of eating would make sense, but it has a curve I just can't with that lol Comment from : Zabyne TheZab |
insane that british woman has it all wrong if i had to eat with someone piling things on the backside of their fork i would just leave the tablebrbrbrits are really the worst when it comes to holding forks i always notice that on youtube even the ones reviewing michelin star restaurants you turn the fork around and also turn your hand so you hold it from beneath basically like the american guy just keeping it in the left hand Comment from : Robopecha |
I'm American, but my utensil etiquette is more European Comment from : Lisa York |
Fun video Being of German British I’d add, was always told that used cutlery was never placed back on table top Always in hands feet or right handed the same Triangle position for rest or spaced out on each side of plate & napkin in seat after excising yourself (loo or phone) However, at home, any UK lad, u get lazy & pee cut some bites Yes it’s slow but I think the old French concept is to encourage eating slowly to take your time to chew Something many Americans try to rush Scooping moths full w/ the spoon Hehe Comment from : K Hanscombe |
Amazing thank you😊 Comment from : aya sarsour |

Admittedly, I am an American of English descent, but I think setting down the utensils while chewing, is more dignified than aways holding them Constantly holding the utensils, to me, seems to have the appearance of shoveling the food in In most things, I think the British are more refined, but this is my exception I find that nowadays, since parents don't teach children table etiquette, without direction, more and more Americans tend to eat the British way Comment from : Alan-NoCo |
I wonder if you would say something if you went out to eat with a person from a country that they were rude if they did eat in a different way than you expect I ask because I sometimes eat with people from 5-6 countries or more and all may have different etiquette I know italians tell us if we do not eat italian food correct but noone has said something how we eat steak Comment from : Bobby Nygaard Chrisitansen |

I'm a simple Russian guy and I just cut all at once, throw a knife away and eat with a fork(but more often with a spoon) in my right hand Also, usually we don't cut our food whatsoever while we are eating cause all that needs cutting is precutted already And we usually eat pastry with our hands Comment from : Егор Гуляев |
In middle Europe we just eat like animal there is no "rude" way to eat just you need to hold the knife certain way ig Comment from : Dark_Sun |
I'm an American, there is no proper way to eat The only thing I would say is considered bad manners in America is slurping In some settings, you shouldn't stir foods together that were prepared separately, it may be considered disrespectful; however, that's not even a steadfast rule brbrAlso, I hold my fork the way I do a spoon, which is why the ideal utensil is a spork Comment from : Litigious Society |
Its interesting isn't how he's putting the food with the fork he's shoveling Comment from : kd1s |
I don’t know if this is only in my case but when I am in the US something about their food etiquette mortifies me, for some reason, I don’t know if it’s normal, I see most Americans grabbing their fork and knife like if they were about to kill someone, same happens when they are using a pencil It just hurts my eyes seeing that Comment from : Æ ☁️ |

Eating on the convex side instead of the concave side has got to be some sort of class signaling thing See peasant, I am so well-fed that I can spend loads of time precariously balancing tiny bits of food onto the wrong side of the fork, whereas you must shovel food using the concave side of the fork because you're starving and need quick sustenance Do they eat ice cream with upside-down spoons? Comment from : Dawnley |

In 21st Century Americawe don't hardly use knives and spoons and forks anymore because we mainly eat: burgers, hotdogs & Chicken Sandwiches ,White Castle burgers, Pizza, Taco Bell foods, fries and chicken nuggets, soda and shakes and the Health nuts eat Nuts, berries, and Salads and that Tofu-stuff (dont need knives and forks for none of that!) and we do NOT eat at no dang Dinner table! we eat in our rooms on the bed, or on the couch in front of the Playstation, we eat meals in the car, on the bus, on the train or even while going for a walk Comment from : Mr Black |

I don't ever think I've switched hands to eat in my life I'd say I do it more "British" style though I rarely use a knife unless meat needs to be cut And the fork fits in your mouth either way so do what's easiest Comment from : MrTimi |
As an American I have never seen a person ever switching fork from hand to hand like that At least not consistently every bite Comment from : BlackSmokeDMax |
OMG, when I am eating with people who use the utensils as Lauren does, I get nervous and have a hard time enjoying my meal It seems so barbaric to have a utensil in each hand throughout the whole meal, like they may use one to stab you if you get too close to their plate It seems like the way people in prison would eat It’s so much more conducive to enjoying the meal to rest between bites and put the knife down The knife is only used for cutting m, if necessary, so why hold it the entire meal? Comment from : t watts |
Elbows on the table was always a no no, now as an adult I never put my elbows on the table, it just seems right 🤣 Comment from : Lucas Dale |
No, I'm sorry, but the British or European way of using a Fork is FORKING RIDICULOUS Pardon the Pun The Fork is bent that way for a reason Trying to scoop food onto the backside (curved side up) is the most INEFFICIENT way of using that particular eating tool Why not use the spoon the same way? Because it makes no sense tothat's why Scooping mashed potatoes onto the back of the form is the dumbest thing I've ever heard Diane Jennings, the Irish girl from the Irish TRY channel was visiting America a while back and she was in a restuarantmight have been Denny's if memory serves, and she was trying to scoop her Hashbrowns on the back of her Fork, and it was extremely painful to watch All of her American viewers were roasting her in the comments like, "What are you doing?" Use a fork in the most efficient way possible for whatever food you are trying to eat What's this nonsense about etiquette? If the Brits tried scooping up dirt with the backside of a shovel, we'd all think you're crazy And you would be Tools are made the way they are for a reason Use the right tool for the job, and use it in the most efficient wayetiquette be damned I say Comment from : David Molinarolo |
i think i eat like mixture of both Comment from : IDyce88 |

As an American, I was always taught that placing the fork upside-down was the way to indicate that you were done (In case that's a regional thing, I was taught that by my mother who grew up in New Jersey) Comment from : Joshua Watts |
Lol, so the "official American way" to use cutlery is using it like everyone in the world does when eating in a casual setting, or like how children who haven't yet learned to use the fork in the left hand eat Got it Comment from : Raptorfeet |
Here in us there so many style because of mix people Asian Mexican Italian filipino Chinese African-American Japanese Vietnamese etc😂 Comment from : katropa |

Hmmmm, how she eats is exactly how my mother (who's from Southern Germany or what we call Schwäbisch) taught us Plus, there is a book called Etiquette which teaches a lot of what she talks about If more Americans taveled outside of the US you'd see these differences When I was in the Dominican Republic I could spot out most Americans by how they ate Comment from : Rick Dawson |
why are you using bayonets for eating? in china they use picksin the philippines we use spoon&fork, and some canadians say its pigly eatingspoon and fork is more efficient/consistent, you have something for the soup or sauce and will not spill the rice and peasmaybe someday they will outlaw those weapons for eatingtoday there is something called a sfork Comment from : activate43 #LSD |

American here I'm right handed, so I hold the meat down with a fork in my left hand, cut the steak with my knife in my right hand, and stab the piece I've cut with the knife and use it to put it in my mouth My wife's grandmother is from Belgium and she's appalled by it Comment from : N M |

Putting food on the upside down tines of the fork is pretty stupid to almost every European culture The tines should be facing upwards when the knife pushes the food onto the fork Switching hands to eat after cutting is also pretty weird Look to continental Europeans (Dutch, Germans, French) for the correct usage of cutlery That said; I am an American and was taught as a small child to eat this way and I have never been looked at awkwardly during any dining experience anywhere in the world Comment from : David Mackey |
There is NO spoon Comment from : paradigmshift7 |
I'm German and been living in the UK for about 12 years now Honestly, people here still look to me like they have no manners The way Brits hold their cutlery is what I see in children in Germany or even most of Europe My English wife has also adopted now the same way I hold my cutlery but her family makes me laugh inside every time Comment from : Mr Penguin |
That’s why we are more fun/outgoing than you stiff upper lippers! 🇺🇸 Comment from : Chanel Tyler |
If we ate like an American in Australia growing, we would have been into trouble for not behaving well mannered American cutlery use is half way between mediaeval and British Comment from : Lone |
I never eat food with knife and fork together at the same time I use the spoon and fork to eat together at the same time I use chopsticks when I eat noodles Comment from : Far eastern lad |
In the UK if you are part way through the meal but intend to have more of the food on the place or your plate is empty but you intend to eat more etiquette says to cross your knife & fork Comment from : dan dare |
Meal etiquette really isn’t a thing in the US, at least not where I’m at I mean, the only real rule I’ve ever heard is keeping your elbows off the table I didn’t know you were suppose to use a fork a certain way, and people around here definitely don’t have a knife unless it’s steak or something that would require cutting Comment from : Kolton Black |
He’s incorrect with the first one 🤣 Comment from : Ashaliyah Aguilar |
I’ve also seen Americans do the fork prongs sides up but it always stays in your left handbrbrI was taught proper etiquette in my honors society as a part of eating properly during a lunch/dinner interview I prefer the British way of eating in a very formal setting Comment from : umiluv |
The British one is not particularly accurate and is probably more about her personal experience being raised at home All families will teach different table manners based on what is more valued For example, many people aren’t taught that it’s rude to have your elbows on the table As for it being rude for the fork tines to point up, that’s not something I’ve ever heard of, and after half an hour of googling, I can’t find an example of this being the case What she does in this video resembles more of a German approach (according to the internet - whether people in Germany actually do this I could not say) Anyway, if you’re American and coming to the UK, nobody is gonna look at how you hold a fork 😊 Comment from : Lizzie |
I eat with my right (Islamic manners), but instead of switching knife and forks the American way, I cut with my left Comment from : Weam Algassim |
