I DO NOT think that flat rate is the BEST pay structure But I found ways to be successful, and I am sharing that with you There are parts of the pay structure that are broken and need to change BUT we can either sit back and whine and wait for it to change, change it by moving to a new job, OR do both and make some money while doing the world catches up Comment from : HumbleMechanic |

What about ever since ya? Comment from : Scot L |
Thank you so much n i have been looking for tips ❤ like this Comment from : Herny Sibanda |

It doesn’t help that these book times are ridiculous 4 for an oil change on a car that has 24 fasteners (some bolts, mostly push pin plastic retainers) on the splash guard is hilarious It takes 1 or more just to remove and reinstall that! Comment from : AK |
thanks for the information man, because ill be going into auto technician Comment from : Eugene Gomez |
I definitely prefer flat rate over hourly Beating the labor time is so satisfying and I definitely make more money than if I was hourly However, it does suck when you get stuck on some long diag or warranty I feel like an hourly plus commission system would be the sweet spot And warranty pay should be illegal Comment from : Andrew M |
Also have to make sure you have a good service writer that won’t screw you over on times Comment from : KJLC Performance |
CAN'T BE DONE IF YOU BEAT IT, YOU SCREWED THE CUSTOMER YOU'RE GETTING PAID ALL OF THAT TIME AREN'T YOU? Comment from : STS |

I think flat rate is awesome I just think when you get thrown odd balls you're likely to get fucked over unless you negotiate with your employer But from an owners perspective, if you make salary or hourly, you have no fire under your ass encouraging you to get shit done Comment from : Yuck Fou |
I'm neither pro or con on smoking, but you're remark about smoking breaks applies to every profession During my career, I would walk out to go get in my car to go make sales calls and see commission paid co-workers taking frequent smoke breaks sitting on the benches outside of our offices and literally wonder how they got anything done I'm sure they did get things done, I'm just not sure if I could be a smoker taking many breaks and getting things done So I guess what I'm saying is well said! Comment from : Jo Tu |
I hate it especially with Covid running around Comment from : MadMechanic |
Thank you for this information, start tomorrow with flat rate Comment from : Cj Styles |
I do well under flat rate now but it was a struggle and a half as an apprentice Any licensed tech should be able to make hours assuming your shop is run efficiently but I truly believe apprentices need to be paid hourly They need to learn how to perform repairs properly Comment from : dustin woluschuk |
So, im about to start a tech job at a dealership up the street from my house they are starting me at 21 an hour I was told be careful because they are going to try and move me to flat rate Will i still be making 21 an hour on flate rate? Comment from : No kimping |

I got a question for you man So I came from a backyard mechanic kind of deal working on my own cars and got hired at Firestone now been there almost 6 months I’m there 45 hours Week and usually I clock about 35 to 40 ish hours But I grab any ticket I know how to do or even if I think I can do it I’ll grab itBut the issue is when I grab tickets I don’t know how to do 100 percent my senior tech is an ass about it and barks about it non stopI’ll ask help from my boss (who was a master tech fot many years until injury) he goes “look at it again boss doing his work for him” What should I do?I don’t give a rats ass about what people say or do as long as they don’t mess with my work But I just want to know how to learn these things and get better as a technician I’m a c tech and I’m grabbing everything I see no matter what unkess it’s A/B tech work so I can do anything or everything manAny advice on how I should do this or go about learning these things on my own without loosing my ass on them big tickets ? Comment from : Cameron Shoemaker |
I love flat rate Comment from : Hector The Flexer |
Flat rate is for crooks! It takes minutes to change ball joints, tie rod ends as a beautiful example, on VW/Audi vehicles Cost for parts is negligible and you dont even give a alignment with the job Thats like no courtesy reach around considering the ridiculous costs Comment from : Gregarious Antithesis |
That was bad ass , well informed!!!! Comment from : Do Alex |
Worked flatrate it sucks especiallybrWarranty work Customer paybrJobs pay better An tool expense isbrA bummer I am out of it an glad Comment from : James Walton |
To beat it its called fake warranty repairs if you work at a dealer Service managers encouraged it cause it brings money from corporate till they send audit people to make sure the work was "performed" Unfortunately this most times is how we can make a living when customer pay is low Comment from : latinoguy483 |
My go to quotes in this business to repairs brDo it right or do it again brAny doubt price it out Comment from : Southern Glazed |
I just got a job offer working as a flat rate mechanic at CarMax would u recommend it Comment from : Local Freight |
Mechanics should be getting 50-50 commission like they did up until the late 1970's Good mechanics deserve 40 to 50 bucks an hour The problem is that most mechanics are not business men They still have the blacksmith mentality and won't stick together and demand more Comment from : earl turner |
Awesome video, really trying to tap into the flat rate mind set Comment from : Travis Wain |
Yeah man! Comment from : Anthony Ray |
I only screw the hot ones that let me 😂 Comment from : Jon Burke |
I always tell my under mechanics I don't care if it takes you 10 hours to do a 5-hour job as long as the car does not come back you did a great job Comment from : Jason Sanchez |
You hit the nail right on the head The problem people have with flat rate is , if you work in a general shop these guys don't want to read manuals on their days off or look up how Vehicles work and get knowledge on every kind of vehicle They want to just make money that's it no one wants to learn anything anymore You don't know how many times a week I'm working on a BMW and another mechanic comes by and says I hate those things they suck Comment from : Jason Sanchez |
The Flat Rate system should be absolutely illegal and rips off customers Comment from : dcast777 |
Felt sooooo attacked by the smoking bit lol i knew it was coming haha Comment from : Niko Priest |
Overtime is where it's at bro We are not allowed to make are own tools but snap on accepts tool designs and if they use your design they cut a check and give you one of the tools Comment from : Nick Houck |
After 10 years in the business, I didn't learn anything newbrBut for guys starting out this is great advice, good work Comment from : J_VINtERnet18 |
I just started at a corporate chain shop (new to the industry) and for now I get paid by the hour doing tires and oil changes But they will put me on flat within several months The only thing I dont like about flat rate is it stress quantity over quality Being OCD and ADHD quality is very important to me and I dont think racing through every job is always the best way to achieve that Especially on the big jobs the little easy stuff you can usually get done fast regardless and still retain quality But big complicated stuff especially on certain makes and models bcough/b BMW bcough/b Volkswagen leaves room for way too many possible mistakes when you're rushing through to beat the book time Comment from : Ben Lorentz |
Good vid Comment from : zombieg00n |
NEVER take your car to a dealership! take it to a place that isn't paying flat rate where the tech isn't focused on beating the system but on doing the job right and nothing more Comment from : ian p |
I've always been an hourly lube tech but I moved to a new city and I start a flat rate lube tech position next week I'm incredibly nervous and concerned about making ends meet Comment from : Ryan Gehret |
it sounds like you made 30 hours a week Comment from : Mike Jennings |
Flat rate might beat hourly but flat rate will never compete with overtime and double time My double time rate on a Sunday in 72 an hour 12 hours locked in Can never make that on a flat rate consistently Comment from : Jay Bisky |
Thanks man for the tips great video Comment from : dimeadozen |
Man, I don't work on cars anymore, but I do work on garbage trucks I felt like you were taking directly to me when you brought up how aggravating it is to figure out how a system works in order to fix it lol Great vid Keep it up!! Comment from : Joshua Laird |
U just gotta get experience, the more experience u got, the more ways u can do the job faster and more efficiently Get that done, more money Personally, i love working in the field bc im never bored Im constantly learning new things Comment from : Goon goon |
What really sucks is why do the lube techs get to be paid hourly all they do is goof off allday while us A B & C techs work our ass off to try and beat flatrate time, i honestly think it should be the other way around Comment from : Alex Rodriguez |
8:11 Doing the job correctly the first time never takes any extra minutes that's simply how much time doing it right takes Comment from : Jersey Tom |
Warranty flat rate is impossible to beat now adays it seems Many are not payong diagnostic time and are just paying to replqce the part In that case i see no reason to work for free, throw parts Its what the manufacturer is paying for Comment from : Dirty Dan Racing |

Flat rate is criminal Nothing more Comment from : Mike Carr |
Every fix should be a set price Most mechanics are cooked lets be real Comment from : Jc |
omg Preach on the stacking things!! we have a few techs that watch the oil drain on a small car like a chevy spark and it makes me crazy you are letting the customer wait longer and getting the adviser have more of them asking "how much longer?" i drop the oil plug and start the rotate and end up done much faster or sometimes i come in after they do and finish before time its a very simple thing i understand the big ol lifted trucks with super heavy wheels kuz i would want the truck lower than normal but normal stock cars/trucks its a waste of time Comment from : Thatguywithswords |
Went to school to be a mechanic and worked in a shop for about two weeks I said screw that and ended up being an electrical engineer Much better career choice Comment from : Aaron Phelps |
How does a flat rate with guaranteed 40 stack up? Comment from : smookee408 |
Look for the car and find it, Oil change 3, brake flush 4, micro filter 2, free inspection, wiper blades 1, return all warranty parts, type your stories, return all paperwork, locate a new job (hopefully you get something decent) and repeat Good fucking luck if you don't get decent jobs or if your service advisor can't sell anything The only way is to write "good stories" unless you get customer pay jobs all the time Comment from : In54ne e82 |
You have solid advice career-wise Trim that beard though It’s pretty haggard I appreciate your advice and such, but you need a trim bud You can’t quite pull off all that beard to look professional Sorry, not sorry Comment from : Corey Short |
I mostly do electrical diagnostic and I would be screwed because Squirrel eating wiring on a trailer doesn't have a book time Comment from : Jay Pence |
I'm one of those that absolutely HATES flat rate I believe it's singlehandedly responsible for why the general public thinks we're all crooks It turns otherwise good technicians into hacks that cut corners out of necessity just to make a paycheck, and increases the amount of unnecessary things being sold to a customer And yea, you're right, I hated it, not because I wasn't making money, but because I felt dishonest about it I believe in quality over quantity, oh, and for the record FUCK warranty work I did what you suggested, I moved to a private government fleet and I haven't looked back Now I get paid by the hour, if I want more money, I simply just work overtime, but I can 100 guarantee my paycheck will be at least 40 hours, week after week I will never go back to flat rate Comment from : Ryaneg6freak |
Good tips, I'm not a mechanic but this will help cut down time working on my own car Comment from : Morse Code Reviews |
I made a fortune on the Toyota x01 vo6 head gasket recall Do it right the first time, loose your ass Do it a couple of times gets real easy, no shortcuts Know your product line most cars are built with about 10 different fasteners Learn the bolts by sight and know where they fit fuck egg crates Seriously, you should be able to recognize every fasteners in the car I cant do it anymore, over exposure to oils, defatting of the skin You are making me want to do it again P S Make your service writer happy, grease the wheels! Comment from : Robert Hoard |
It's easy, don't suck Comment from : Robert Hoard |
Pretty decent with all of the points you gave, always improvement however how do you work next to someone turning double the hours getting fed flushes and big jobs, I’m still turning 45+ a week but I cannot cannot compete with that Is it worth moving to another dealership where hopefully one person isn’t leeching most of the work? Comment from : sam4italy |
first thing that came to mind was electrical troubleshooting and rusted/broken fasteners What about servicing used parts to save the customer money? Or just replace all with new and let him pay?? Comment from : Mud Sh-sh-shark |
After dealing with the flat rate system for 32 years I finally beat it I quit being a mechanic and got a good job More benefits and paid time off AND I get paid over timebrThat's the best way to beat flat rate and not get beaten by it Anyone want to buy some tools? Comment from : Maxwell Crazycat |
Back when I was a tech I would up sell warranty fluid leaks throw the new seals in old oil, put them back in the bag and flag it I had to get my lost hours for the 2 and 3 jobs that I was constantly doing Also study the warranty labor times book and find all the gravy warranty jobs like sway bar bushings that pay 3 hours and take 30 min to install Once you have it all figured out, upsell the shit out of the warranty gravy This lines your pockets with cash and does not hurt your customers Comment from : Brian P |
17 years in and my #1 flaw I still bullshit too much during the work day Comment from : PigSkinz |

Im currently flat rate rate honda dealer in a pretty good area in nj But the first few weeks i made 50-60 hrs per week But now im struggling to make 8/day just to make my times worth, after 3 months I have less than a yr of experience flat rate so could it be the dispatcher? Or my habits? The writers not wanting to try and upsell? Its getting kinda frustrating comparing my checks differences lately but i see others guys killing it but i dont want to lose hope either i think i can make money but some things need to be re-analyzed Comment from : Isorozco511 |
A Colectivo Coffee sticker!!!!! I love Colectivo! Comment from : Cody Johnson |
A little late But I've seen more and more lemon-law videos on newer cars The manufacturer could pass the lemons around dealerships regardless of miles to give the techs/mechs first hand knowledge on how it should run/fixing the lemon issue Comment from : Carey Edgin |
