No one ever says how much they should make Only we are not paid enough What is it that you want to be paid? Comment from : Arthur Kineard |
Not sure if i commented on here before, but I'm going to go for it anyway, I'm a mechanic in the UK, almost every tech gets paid a hourly wage as standard (depending on experience) the higher your hourly wage, Senior Techs can range from £20-25 upwards - Master Techs £15-18 - Tyre Fitters & Service Techs for example are on £10-12 a hour Most company's offer a bonus scheme which basically incorporates the flate rate mindset in that your get paid a certain percentage each month on the hours you have billed, on top of your hourly salary, thus keeps hourly Techs efficient if they want that bonus paycheck every month 😎💪👍 Comment from : GiLBY MDG ReKords |
Worked my way through college for my engineering degree as a two way radio repair tech I was paid 30 of the billed labor Comment from : Cutabove |
Who much different is the pay scale for hourly vs flat ratebrWhat happens when work returns from not being done correctly or short cutsbrI'm asking because first time looking into flat rate Lot of pros for it just want to no about negative parts Plus who does the clean up and organize of work area Comment from : Dave Cole |
Let me preface this by saying that I am not a mechanic I am a welder I work at a company that was incentive based(piece rate) and what you made was only limited by your ability Production was through the roof Quality was taken care of by non conformance items being docked on your check Now we are hourly and make a good wage but performance is abysmal Company is now contemplating subbing out our work and I can't blame them Comment from : Adept Detailing |
I once worked with a guy at GM that did a line of cocaine every morning and turned 100 hours a week Also made 100k a year😂😂 Comment from : Everett Johnson |

Over time flat rate will phase out or will be resigned in 20 years no one's gonna work these jobs and demand will be high Comment from : wubreactor |
The place I just moved to does a hybrid system of a hourly and your flat rate hours at the end of the week are multiplied times itself So if I flag 40 hours it’s $40 an hour if I flag 18 hours it’s $18 hour Plus your salaried hours for just being there It’s a pretty good system Comment from : Weslee Hein |
I’m a flag technician at Chevrolet dealer They pay me 20 dlls per hour if I reach 90 proficiency but if I don’t reach the 90 proficiency they pay me all hours at 1300 !!!! Do you think it is fair? Comment from : Fernando Zuno |
Automotive technician and i get paid flat rate unfortunately, some times it's worth it , but most of the time it doesn't especially with the warranty BS Comment from : mustafa saghah |
CA I’m flatrate, I don’t mind it but we are a small Chrysler dealer and don’t have enough cars in to make your hours Comment from : Chrysler technician |
My guys are paid flat rate with a 7 hour guarantee per day Comment from : The Car Detailing Channel |
Well the reason why as technician will not stand up for each other is because some of us are being taken care of and the rest have to pick the crumbs that's left over,so what needs to happen is we need a true labor governing board that oversees a true and honest pay scale that will benefit the auto makers, shop/dealership owners, really and truly the flat rate system has out run its course it's time for a new system that benefits everyone Comment from : Clive Leslie |
We upfit air conditioning in school buses at the shop I work at and we get paid hourly, but we get efficiency bonuses If we do a job in less than the time allowed we get a bonus based on the percentage of how efficient you are Comment from : RGO Impact |
I like my hourly job because there is almost zero stress I make a good amount per hour and I always go above and beyond per each job, but I know I'm not going to make extra money even I push I'm fine with that because I am comfortable with my wage and I have very little stress To me that is better than making more money Comment from : Joe Rogaine |
All u keep daying im shop forman no one cars its a pos job Comment from : redline |
I work in a small private shop i get paid by the hour but if you were to ever see me work you would think I was a flat rate tech Comment from : JOE Hyundai Tech |

I worked in a hourly shop that had efficiency bonus it work really well We would monthly individual talks about how we were progressing and how we can improve and if someone was being lazy and didn't try they would just fire him Comment from : nick183ful |
I love flat rate the lazy people in my shop hate it Comment from : Daryl Daryl |
I’m also a Chrysler tech I like flat rate because of the idea of the harder you work the more you produce, so it’s pretty much up to you The only Down side is the work needs to be there Comment from : Jackie Quach |
Tigercat (Logging equipment) mechanic here Our company has a hybrid pay system, in that it's base hourly + a commision bonus system based on tiers Say I break $9,000 in billed labor charges, I get a commision check based at that point $12,000 in billed labor? More money We top at $15,000 in billed labor Now that check is based on the hard gross we bring in What happens when the customer has a dispute with costs after the fact? Doesn't pay? Or another mechanic "helps" on your job (undercutting your baseline)? Accountability has always been, and always will be, the base problem within our fieldbrbrThat and terrible management ;) Comment from : Chester Ross |
Hello again RBM brThank you for the Great Video I've only worked under a Flat Rate System, one time And I, didn't like it at all I was starting out in the automotive world Crossing over from the Aviation field I tried it for four months I went back to the Aviation world and didn't look back I'll take my hat off to anyone who can make a living doing it Again thank you for the Video Comment from : George Ferlazzo |
I'm writing this comment before I listen to the whole video and there's a couple things wrong with flat rate: It causes techs to race the clock compromising the job not torquing bolts & nuts to spec, passing on certain jobs causing customer's cars spending too much time at the shop, and not doing maintenance in full, such as actually changing the trans filter instead of just changing the fluid This tempts cheating & dishonesty & numbing of the conscience Comment from : Justin |
I work at a corporate-owned dealer in California were tradesmen are paid double the minimum wage 2600 an hour starting in 2020 and tops out in 2023 ay 3000 an hour that our time clock payplus we get productivity pay it works fine for slow shops the reason they went to this system was the liability issue and state laws, not get paid when there's no work is not legal in California I am almost retired this business has changed a lot I made more money in the the 90s on flat rate, things are alot slower now wait until all the vehicles are electric there won't be any work thanks for the vidio, Comment from : James Goularte |
I work corporate jet and we are all hourly except managers and they are salary We do flat rate to charge customers so they want us to beat it while on hourly it drives the hourly shop rate up and they watch those numbers very close it’s all about the bottom line Comment from : John P |
About 7 years ago we switched from flat rate to hourly brAnd i could not be happier brThe owner has less stress as well brI work on heavy equipment and outdoor power equipment The flat rate did not work When working on 3+ different kinds of things at once All jobs on outdoor power equipment is quoted as flat rate brHeavy equipment is not Comment from : If its not broken fix it |
Flat rate is alil stressful Comment from : nitrous07me |
I’m a GM dealer tech in a small town dealership in Cali we don’t have enough work load for flat rate to work for us we’re on a hybrid system hourly based on experience and certification the if you flagged past “X” amount of hours you make a flat rate bonus on top per month Comment from : JimboChop |
I'm an diesel injection pump technicianI get a lot of older pumpsif we charged flat rate, I would not make dime one having said that, it's more of restoring than rebuilding Don't know if that helps or notgood video! Comment from : David Pinnix |
I hate hourly techs, they do fucking nothing all day maybe 1-2 cars a day I don't really like hourly because I can get alot done per day so why shouldn't I make that extra money I average 15-20hrs per day So I want the money that I should get Comment from : niteninja 01 |
I would like to find the guy who thought of the times for warranty And I'd sit down and watch them make a good paycheck doing only warranty Because they can suck ass People who hate flatrate are slow as shit and cant make money Comment from : niteninja 01 |
Michigan tech here , 17 -23 of total bill except tire sales Comment from : MR OG |
I don’t mind flat rate I just hate the inconsistency I’ve worked both flat rate and salary My efficiency never dropped I only know one speed And that is get as much done as I can everyday as long as it is done right Doesn’t matter how I am paid, I always work the same way Comment from : Foodskewed919 |
I'm a hourly dealer tech I came from flat rate at Firestone and yes I miss the high hour weeks but I dont miss the slow ones I dont feel like my efficiency has decreased but I do feel like I take my time where I may have rushed before Not having the stress of shitty writers and parts guys wasting my time is a improvement too Comment from : UBBERTANKER |
We need to have a class action against the mfg to have an independent agency determine a fair pay and everyone should live by#classaction# Comment from : Taylor Made Adventures |
The industry does not need fixing, nor does the pay system need fixing per se Wages are set by markets Markets are affected by too many factors for any individual to change The level of freedom in a market is the basic determining factor of prices, including wages (economics 101) Because each shop is a unique individual, just like people are, they're all going to do things slightly different while the majority conform to the market demands The only solution for technicians is to find the job and pay structure that best suits them They only solution for business owners is to complete fiercely for technicians with the following: available hours, wages, nicer facilities, schedules, medical benefits, PTO and so on Let the chips fall where they may I love your channel, but this is a waste of time If someone doesn't like their pay structure, go find another shop to work for Shop owners are slitting each other's throats to get technicians Ask me how I know Comment from : Andy Bertoch |
Im a mobile diesel tech, work on peterbuilts, cats, volvo, freight liners, all of that and trailers If i work out of the company truck i get paid 1/2 labor If i use my personal work truck i make 1/2 labor plus mileage My company pays the insurance on my personal service truck so i make fairly good money, great money if calls dont stop I work at shop but only for $12 hr I make my money on road calls Been doing this since 18, im 20 now and i can tell you what its a love hate relationship but when the money is running good you dont complain on payday Comment from : BloodSport Outdoors |
Hourly/Flat Rate whichever is more during that pay period brbrThis pay model is only for technicians currently enrolled in an automotive program at the local community college My dealership sponsors four students per year Fantastic program brbrThe 2- year program goes:brbr1st Yearbrbr3 months full time work (Lube Tech)br3 months full time school (work as much as can/want to after school)br3 mo/work (Lube Tech)br3mo/school brbr2nd yearbrbr3 mo/work as mechanics apprenticebr3mo/school br3mo/apprentice br3mo/school brbrI'm one week into my experience, and I love it Thanks be to Subaru for initiating a program like this brbrAlso, one qualifying student during that academic year (highest grades of the four students), gets tuition, books, lab fees, and tools paid for by SubarubrbrLove your channel You're doing great work Comment from : Nathan Nicholson |
Where i work i get paid the hybrid system and every year we get 1500$ to buy tools which is really niceI think the big problem for tech is tool debt you have to buy tool to make money and its the only profession that you do so Teachers dont have to by book to be able to teach? Comment from : Jonathan Luker |
I get paid percentage on book time labor and the sale of the parts as well Better than flat rate and no warranty work Comment from : Brett Sharrow |
Glad I chose aviation, no flat rate as far as I know Too much incentive to cut corners, no saying I would, but I already have to fix shoddy work as is Comment from : Caleb P |
I'm a diesel tech for a large national company We are hourly but our jobs still have a standard repair time or book time attached to them Not hitting your times in a consistent manner could lead to the bosses office for a talk or more Hitting your times leads to a quarterly bonus It's a little low at 500 a quarter due to the high tax on bonus pay but we're happy to get it Comment from : Jeremy W |
I'm just a DIY guy who repairs my vehicles so I can't contribute to the conversation but I do enjoy everything about the repair industry including how techs are paid (I like to be an educated customer on those jobs I can't handle) Comment from : wyattoneable |
We get payed by the hour but our bonus is base off the flare rate system It’s nice having that extra money but the biggest down side to that is they are not doing anymore hourly pay raise Comment from : Billy Horton |
Downfall of hourly for me is in the agriculture farm Industry it is not required to pay overtime Comment from : NA Gray |
I've been flat rate, salaried, and commissioned over the years They all have their downfalls depending on the shop you are in I will say I made more money being commissioned than the other ways Comment from : Jon Burke |
I work on a straight salary I am paid well & on high productivity weeks receive extra as a bonus Different than what I'm used to, but has worked out well so far Comment from : Grease E Monkey |
I saw something the other day, I don't remember what it was or what it was on, where customer pay was 27 hours and warranty was b03/b hours Fuck that noise Comment from : smitty2jones |
Been doing this since the 80s off and on miss the old guarantee u got something slow or u get flag money when its busy New hours on jobs is what's killing flat trate pull transmission now 3 hours a 4l60 paid 5 hours it's the book choking the flat rate system the dealership wants twice the work now to much training and tool buying to fix these super computers on wheels Comment from : Tyrone Allen |
I'm a diesel technician at a private owned TA/Petro everyone makes 15/hr during training and when you go on your own you keep the 15/hr but you get 38 commission on labor our shops labor rate is 120/hr most people can expect between 1800 and 3000 labor per week you also get 1 added for every ase test you pass topping out at 45 always keeping 15/hr as a minimum your commission has to equate to less than 15/hr to get the 15/ hr but no matter what you get time and a half on 15/hr for anything over 40 commissions or not Comment from : Brandon Gordon |
Dealership tech from Australia herebrbrI'd say a large of techs here are what you'd call hybrid Hourly rate, our efficiency & productivity monitored and commission paid accordingly Or, bonus paid on gross profit made by the dealership against a target set at the start of the month, or a combination of all of thatbrbrCommission pays are usually tiered, so between say 80-90 efficiency would net you X amount of bonus, 90-100 would be the next bonus pay grade up, etcbrbrThis absolutely encourages you to be quick, but if you have a bad run at least you know you'll still get your base pay Comment from : Adam Willison |
I’ve heard of salary by skill level in the higher tier manufacturer dealerships (automotive) Comment from : WeTheNorth |
I’m hourly plus commission Been working on cars professionally for 4-5 years and I’m 24 Made just under $70k this year Comment from : Jacob Smith |
My shop pays s hybrid pay system Comment from : Nick Jones |
most people dont know that almost every repair has a book timebut once they do realize this and press the issue labor will all drop to flat rate no matter whatnow if a customer feels like the mechanic is honest and develops a trust with them it will pay off for the mechanic and the bussiness in the long rtun Comment from : Nic Moreno |
Hurry, hurry, hurry, causes mistakes, missed details, and cut corners NO TWO JOBS ARE EQUAL Especially in the SALT BELT!!! Comment from : HouseCallAutoRepair |
Hourly + commission flat rate only for shop foreman Comment from : Ezeeduzzit |
I've been an hourly employee and no I don't slow down because I don't like drag time cuz it feels like the day will never end but I try to be as efficient as possible due to the fact that customers always have something to complain about Chrysler Express Lane tech Comment from : RANCT1 |
Flat rate is a rip off for customers AND, x for "shop supplies" is a further insult Comment from : Great Basin |
Lol you know exactly how I feel about flat rate Comment from : Everyday Fleet Tech |
I am paid on a hybrid system, a guaranteed amount, but if I flag more than a given percentage, I am paid flat rate Makes it nice when doing shop and bay maintenance, as well as repairs to shop equipment Comment from : Chris sargent |
Flat rate would work if it offers a guarantee of at least 30 hours a week That should cover the slow season and for young techs who just starting LIFE Bills doesn’t decrease just because you’re slow at work This should promote quality work, this especially, would encourage our future techs to perform more quality work For efficiency on flat rate, offer an incentive such as: $1 more of your pay after 50 hours; another $1 more after 55 hours; another $1 more after 60 hours; etc If all flat rate work like this, everybody eat Comment from : True Step |
Good video and you done it without calling anybody a name and telling somebody how stupid they are!!! Good job Comment from : Old mechanic |
I’m a diesel tech and we do an incentive pay We get paid hourly but are able to make a little more money if we finish jobs faster It’s pretty nice to be able to make a little extra but still have my hourly pay Comment from : Ashton Rowley |
I’ve worked commission and I don’t think it’s good, they made us sell things that weren’t needed to “make money” literally that’s what the meetings were about, sell sell sell they don’t care about the customers Now I work hourly, we sell only what’s needed, we keep super busy for being the “honest shop” in town Comment from : Alex Franco |
I work in a independent shop i am paid in the “hybrid” way as you put it I make my standard flat rate pay but I get paid 10 percent commission off of the total parts which helps out some of them jobs that kinda kick you in the butt and I also have a guarantee so no matter what I make A paycheck now the downside to that is my boss is generous and he knows he is paying me that way so he expects nothing but the best out of me not that I don’t he just makes sure I’m on my toes at all times Comment from : Robert Ayers |
At my last automotive shop (small mom and pop shop) that I was at for 9 years we were paid hourly and got commission on everything sold My current shop which is heavy duty diesel I am paid hourly Comment from : AnthonyHyde802 |
Hourly is terrible, you literally trade your time away from your family for a dollar rate as apposed to being paid for the value you produce as a technician on flat rate Also toolsdont buy themselves Being good at what you do should pay upon ability and quality Comment from : Justin M |
There is no easy way to make a living, some good insights here Thanks for sharing it, if the repair industry goes in the direction of corporations they will put techs on salary Techs will be exempt from overtime and likely overworked and not being paid overtime The hybrid system sounds pretty good and may offset the slow times of flat rate system The manufacturers don't seem to offer much incentive for dealers and techs to perform warranty repairs, they shouldn't be getting away with itbrHowever if it changed vehicle costs would increase even more and the consumer would end up bearing the expense Comment from : cardo |
In my opinion from working in the industry for 5 years now and seeing alot of guys come and go, the techs and service writers should be paid a normal hourly rate, but the shops should still charge customer on the flat rate rate systemcombining the two eliminates the possibility of selling additional parts/labor that is not actually needed, and customers understand that the employees dont make anything more just because their vehicle needs x parts/labor Comment from : Nope Nope |
Form submitted sir Good luck with all the submissions Comment from : Andy Speight |
I’ve been a helper to my shop foreman for 2 years now, I’ll be “Mazda certified” by the end of this month, I’m excited He’s taught me well I’m stoked to flag hours but I’ll miss that confidence of knowing anything I mess up can be magically fixed by him in the matter of minutes 😂 well see how it goes!
