From what I heard, everybody is slowly ditching book time Between the inflation and the shortagesits not worth itbrbr Although, if a mech knows the cheat codes (start destructive), if they finish early, they'll still bank book time Comment from : Vex |

Based on the flat rate systemI went to McDonalds the other day and ordered a burger I realized shortly after that I was more hungry than I thought, so I went back to the counter and ordered a second burger and said that I was only going to pay half the the price for the second burger because the grille was already hot They told me to leave Comment from : Jeff Tracy |
I love how my pay scale is set up, I have a hourly rate & receive 15 of my total ticket Like today, I got approval on a small $1,000 ticket for a alternator a belt and a few small things on a Honda Odyssey It calls for rite at 2 hours, so I’ll make around $150 for tho’s 2 hours on the flip side tho I make a hourly rate for the cold months if I don’t hit my for the week and it’s like $15 a hour way lower than my commission rate but it’s nice having the guarantee I hated thanksgiving through New Years at the Chevy dealership It was bad for 3 or 4 weeks where we wasn’t barely getting anything Comment from : Cody Wright |
Flat rate is a great way to make money if you are willing to invest in yourself This means having the tools to eliminate time burping cooling systems Your own refrigerant recovery machines, ball joint and wheel bearing presses It allows you to stay moving instead of waiting Comment from : Charles Shankle |

I know how it feels on both sides of the issue As the customer and the tech As a customer I can certainly appreciate a mechanic who is honest Does not try to fleece me for additional parts/work that my car may not need Also goes the extra mile and ensures my car is repaired right the first time As a mechanic I appreciate the customer who takes the time to provide vital information on the issue with their car in order to help diagnose/repair their vehicle first time around Comment from : EDDIE LEAL |

So when you get done getting fucked on hours for working on a vehicle, you also get to use your time making sure no one fucks you out of even more of your hours Mean while you’ve been there for 10hours and made 5 if you’re lucky I don’t understand “$25 flat rate” is $1200 an hour if we’re being honest How is anyone okay with that? Plus the stress that it puts you through daily??? What have I done 😀brbrOhhh yeah AND you have to buy your tools All the fuckin time I can’t even afford to buy them anymore It feels like I’m just there for fun Nah I don’t wana make money today I’m just here to be y’alls bitch and say thank you for my 2 warranty job Comment from : Ethan Welch |

Flat rate is useless ,brIn a small town where the work volume is way less than the big citybrAnd remember the more you know the less you make Having to do the difficult warranty repair that pay less while the less experienced tech do the gravy Comment from : Yordan Sanchez |

Get the best of both worlds Find an hourly pay shop that has an efficiency commission I make 35 an hour and can get from 5 to 9 dollars an hour extra per month for being efficient 5 dollars an hour starts at 75 percent efficiency🤙🏼 Also this is a truck dealership, not auto Comment from : Aaron Bowers |

Flats rate sounds terrible Comment from : Michael Gourgy |
So what are you supposed to do when your employer keeps cutting book time and demanding more from you? Example: all the menu items like lof/rotate, brake jobs, fluid services, etc Isn’t there some protection from this for the tech? How is the employer within his rights to cut the book time I should be being paid? Comment from : J M |

I worked at the local Toyota dealership as a lube tech for about 8 months I was pretty quick Not super quick especially towards the end when injury took me out completely I had a process that made sure that I never missed anything and to the best of my knowledge I only had one come back and that was only really because of the poor MAF sensor placement on the first gen Prius Get any dirt on it during a filter change and it can kill the car until you clear codes my system made it so that I had visual hints as to what I’ve done Is the dipstick flopping around? I need to fill up the oil Is the car still supported by the lift? Torque those wheels It made it so that I didn’t have to remember or could quickly pick up where I was after getting pulled away Comment from : Dave DiPetrillo |
It's absolutely not 95 of techs, my man It's a LOT less than that It's a system that is going away, and for good reason I won't whine about it too much because it's been okay to me on the wholebut it's getting to be less and less all the time Toyota is an example I can give from experience They are a manufacturer looking at other ways of paying techsmore fair ways, at that Comment from : Josh Barth |
Fuck flat rate Nobody should agree to work flat rate Comment from : The Man The Myth The Legend |

My dad worked flat rate for years in the late 90s -mid 2000’s I believe his all time record for one paycheck was 164 hours He wasn’t allowed to stay on flat rate much longer, the dealership told him he needed to go to hourly because they wouldn’t be able to keep paying him those hours Comment from : Sid Snyder |
I’m at 4 ad breaks and I fast forwarded 5 min for 30 seconds of video you need better videos for that amount of time wasted Comment from : DBAGproductions |

The irony of a Fiat/ Chrysler tech calling Toyota junk 😂 Comment from : Darrell Grant |
I work for a BMW dealership and we get a base salary plus flat rate Our flat rate kicks in after 80+ hours every month (warranty and customer pay hours) So you either be lazy and get base or push harder and go home with 5 figuresluxury brands are the goal 👍🏼🔧 Comment from : Niko Priest |

Going to school to be a diesel tech Just got yourself a sub! What drew me in was the diesel mechanics tool box tour Comment from : Country Life |
I dont like flat rate for the simple fact I had a vehicle on my lift that had no brakes parts had to order the rotors and a new tire I had to wait for the tires all I had in between was a pdi I was only granted to use one lift Comment from : Autotech Steven |
As a new tech i have been struggling a little with flat rate, i have to learn so many new systems that take longer than normal like right now in my bay i've got a car i've been working for 18hrs, 12 of which where diag 4 of those where talking to tech-line now im replacing the floor harness after it was replaced last year, the main reason the diag took so long(service manager didnt want to warranty the harness because he new i wouldn't get any money) turns out a rat ate the harness, yay i get paid customer doesnt want to pay, trades the car in, now i get 90 of labor time ontop of the 16hr labor rate for the harness this took 3 weeks, on and off diag of the car made it so i only got an average of 28hrs a week I cannot wait for this car to be gone Comment from : jhowe67 |

Will never again work flat rate In a shop with a manager and your low on the pecking order, you are the one that sweeps up, takes out the trash and such All this while the old timer's are getting the good paying jobs You stave and are poor while others (mechanics and shop owners) rake in the money With every thing that needs done, that doesn't pay flat rate, the young one stay poor Comment from : flatlandwelder |

From 8:53 on, especially, THIS VID IS PURE GOLD (I watched it TWICE)!!! I have spent incalculable hours consuming automotive subject content on YT and NO ONE puts it quite like you! I'm not sure if everyone who listens to this understands exactly what you're giving them, Rustbelt Mechanic! brbrThis is something that an exceptional technician (I would think) would/should just know intuitively! It definitely gives that "WOW-factor" to the workmanship (and advances the profession/skill, really) that employers, customers, etc should be able to expect Yes, it takes time but is the RIGHT WAY to do things Yes, Rustbelt Mechanic, TRUST IS EVERYTHING!!! brTwo thumbs up to your vid, Brother! Additionally, you have a new sub! God bless you and I hope your business really flourishes!! Comment from : Algo Rhythm |
I like the way you keep track of your time, I'm going to have to look into that, I currently use my calander on my computer to track mine, it is nice because it syncs with my laptop at home too, so I can just look at it no matter where I am, I log the ro number, how many hours, which dealer the car belongs to, (I work for 4 different dealers) and what the vehicle is Comment from : Kevin Avery |
Can you please share your google doc sheet and how you integrate it with your phone? Thanks a bunch! Comment from : Jarrett Watson |

There are so many shops out there and all of them need SKILLED, hard working technicians, so if you don't like the flat rate system, don't work at a flat rate shoppretty simple reallybrbrI have worked both flat rate and hourly and depending on how efficient and good you are at what you do, it really comes out to be approximately the same regardless of which one you workbrbrIf you are a die hard anti flat rate system guy, maybe it's time to revaluate your work ethics, efficiency, and growth in this field If you're an anti hourly guy SAME SAME SAME!!!brbrYou have but one person to blame for your wage and you see that person every day in the mirrorbrbrGood video Rustbeltthanks for the insight Comment from : PAULYS AUTO |

This is a Great Video!!! Awesome run Down in everything Is there any way that you could do a more in depth video on the “work hours” form ? Like how do you set up the spread sheet portion of it to track total hrs etc And how long do you do a form ? ( like for the whole month or for each pay period ?) Again awesome vid, hope to hear back Thanks! Comment from : Miguel Hormazabal |

you know you're working at a deadass car dealership when you have nothing to do but wash your truck and make videos Comment from : john dillinger |
Customer pay is so expensive because it's so difficult to make reasonable money on warranty At hyundai we get zero diag, zero for rust and broken stuff, zero for the half hour on hold with techline, zero for all the recommended diag that techline says So when customers come in the advisors and managers jack up the time to make up for where warranty lacks I feel bad for the customers Also what incentive do techs have to fix it right under warranty if you'll get paid more for throwing 2 parts at it instead of one Comment from : thecheesburgler |
Step one: Have a service writer who caresbrStep two: Don't chase the bottom dollarbrStep three: Bust your ass like your living depends on itbrWhen I was doing flat rate, I typically turned 120-130, and made ok money Some places had service writers who didn't care, or fed one tech over another, and in those cases I still turned over 100 efficiency, but sat for hours every day killing my total hours I'm glad to be back on straight hourly, as a company mechanic Lots less stress Comment from : Jared Kennedy |
nice video, I like this guy Comment from : TheOutwiththeold |

Ya corner cutting you can make more some days But that's why there is no mechanics worth a shit out there and people like me get repeat customers Hipster flat rate corner cutters I seen other shops I fix their problems they cannot Due to corner cutting flat rate newbies Comment from : Mike Carr |
Flat rate is for corner cutters You can not convince me otherwise I refuse flat rate for 20years I actually spend time cleaning and fixing shit right so my boss pays me to sit when there is no work I am paid 20per hour to clean if we are slow Flat rate is for hack scam artist Corner cutters When I take time to clean parts and entire engines because I like my customers Once again I am PAID All my time There are days I smoke cigs all day and get little work Still PAID flat rate is for dummies I am paid to talk on my phone Take out the trash, eat lunch all paid If you are worth a shit and honest you'd get paid hourly Never work flat rate Comment from : Mike Carr |

What is the least and highest you can get paid as an auto tech Comment from : Leo Mejia |

Great video, brings me back to Dallas TX where I worked for a Dodge dealership from 1997 - 2004 as a flat rate tech (back in Sweden now) So true about loosing hr when you first start working on flat rate Ei head gasket on a SOHC Neon paid 4 hr warranty time, first one I did toke me 65 hr, after i don't know how many head gaskets i was done to 25 hr, by cutting corners on the removal and installation procedures Year 2000 i actually checked my hr and I ran an average off 56 hr / week over a period of 1 year that I got paid for We had to be at the shop for 10 hr / day mo - fr but if you deduct the time for finding cars, getting parts, bull shitting with other techs, lunch, test drive etc the average time you actually turned a wrench was not 10 hr / day Another thing we had at that time was that we got to right done the LOP numbers our self, so no human error except your own Our shop used only warranty time, if it was customer pay we used warranty time times 15 and you got customer time I could write a small novel about my 7 years as a flat rate tech in Dallas Thanks for a great channel, keep up the good work Comment from : Swedes Garage |
I don’t like flat rate You just don’t get the quality of work The company I work for came out with incentive pay What is hard to explain But how much I get paid is based on How many hours I bill out in a pay period Sets how much you make for every hour But what sucks is we don’t get paid for or ((bill gain)) is what they call it Tell the customer pays there bill, warranty is a hole different story Comment from : James Hintergardt |
1 I hurt myself from how hard I cringed at the washing method you used on your truckbrbr2 NO ANTI SEIZE ON LUG STUDSbrbr3 Flexing your airpods lol Comment from : DaylightDarknes |
