People who get solar for their homes are mainly doing it for financial reasons The problem is they’re not saving any money and in many cases they’re seeing their bills, double and triple Solar panel sales is this centuries version of aluminum siding Comment from : Stew |
My solar story - I could never make solar math work Seems to me I would just be trading paying the electric company for the solar installers all while taking on the maintenance burden After plenty of research, I purchased 144 used solar panels and new micro inverters and installed them on a 40x80 shed Not hard to do if you have help and are a little handy So far our production has covered our usage and we are getting minimum electric bills ($23) I estimate my payoff will be between 5-7 years It was a lot of work but worth it The best part, other than no bill, is that I don’t care what happens to electricity prices anymore Comment from : 66gtb |

An emergency backup solar system to run basics is good Solar generators or a small system to learn on and have cooking, electric blankets, lights, devices covered A few low watt appliances Portable Fridge or freezer, induction burner, few 100ah Lifepo4 batteries that last over ten years at least Yes, need a spot where the sun shines A solar cooker oven doesn’t even need electricity Good to have for emergencies, power outages, camping, road trips etc They can be expanded or add another system for more power as you learn or want to invest more knowing more how it works Comment from : Phoenix Jordan |
Dumb as hell Comment from : Effervescent_Smegma |

8-12 payback is a bit long Comment from : Daemon Can |
This math doesn’t make sense Let the utility go solar/wind and invest that $82k! In 10-years you’ll double your money and the solar technology is only going to get better in the future Comment from : Todd Crabtree |
82K is too high, most of the systems we sell are $30K to $40K, before the 30 tax credit, payback is 75 years here in Florida on a grid tied system The battery back-up will NOT lower your bill A system that costs $22K after the tax credit will generate $300 per month here in Tampa Comment from : Uncle Bens Channel |
Tax credit is now 30 until 2031 Comment from : Uncle Bens Channel |

He could likely go fully off grid for that price Comment from : David Wooten |

Im in cali, i just borrowed to pay cash for solar The rates have gone up so much here that solar is really the only thing protecting my wallet Comment from : J A |
I know this is 3 years ago, but I had the same question I'm getting pressured to borrow 22k for a loan to put solar panels Or I could lease I don't like leasing anything and I heard from so many don't do it! Also, I don't think it would be worth it to go into debt So, I said no Comment from : Shirley Montano |
I don’t know who you are but you’re dead wrong! You didn’t consider rate increases and there’s nothing wrong with financing at all, it’s WAY cheaper than electrical companies Good lord, don’t listen to people just because they’re famous! Comment from : Nolan Shafik |
Its not always just about money money Half of it isn't a luxury but a benefit to the future of our climate and our planet Comment from : Jonathan Mc Govern |
im really struggling to understand why solar in the DFW is $40k for a 10kw system without batteries I look up all the things needed to do it myself and its like 20k with 24kwh worth of batterie storage where do these companies come up with the cost of install? Am i missing something? Comment from : Evander Francis |
No ones asking how much he’s going to pay to the electric company instead if he doesn’t go solar Ur already paying for it Might as well have a locked in fixed rate Comment from : AdamReviewsFx |
For everyone who isnt a solar dealer - its ALWAYS cheaper to go cash because you dont include financing fees/ dealer fees , 13k off the solar system is not a sales tactic its the truth - the tactic was in the time limit to build urgency Comment from : andrewmarcfit |

Almost none of the numbers thrown around in this conversation added up, not even close First of all, an $83k system discounted by a 26 rebate is a little over is $60k not $69k However, If we use Thomas's out of pocket number of $69k and his energy savings of $4k/year, his breakeven will be closer to 175 years (not counting interest on the loan) not 8-12 years as estimated by Mr Ramsey brbrThomas says this is a "whole house" system and so requires batteries In order to displace $333/mo at $012 per kw of electricity you'd have to produce close to 16000 watts (27 kw rated system) of power per day, plus have about 40 kw of battery backup An added cost and complication is that many utility companies impose costly requirements when a system exceeds 10 kw A 27 kw system is going to be closer to $100k (with sales commissions and profit for the company), not 82k When using this more realistic cost of a system, the payback period is closer to 20 years Of course you could buy a smaller 10 kw system to use for back up of critical circuits and also help offset your electric costs brbrA commissioned salesman is not likely to give you the full story before you sign on the line Don't be in a hurry, take your time and educate yourself I've had solar for many years and seen the technology improve by time If done right, it can be financially justified Consult a qualified solar engineer/consultant before making a purchase I am not a solar consultant, I just have many years of experience designing and building my own systems Comment from : WeekNight Ace |
When he said pool I thought he said poo brHaha Comment from : bob |
Sounds like he's getting batteries with the solar, he doesn't wanna say it but he's probably not going to be saving money over the avg 25yr warranty of the system brWith significant battery capacity the solar savings may just subsidize the batteries to break even With time of use areas the batteries may help you save some more money though Comment from : Brent Workman |
It's different dave, this is something that people are gonna pay for anyways! Do not compare this to a luxury like a pool, no one needs a pool but everybody needs electricity Comment from : My FYP Rocks |

I'm looking to build a modular system piece by piece until I get enough to get a check from the EMC instead of a bill Comment from : Johnnys Videos |
Dave Ramsey is an idiot You can literally take out a five-year loan with zero down make the same monthly payment you’re making with your utility, instead of paying utility you pay the lender for the solar system Your utility payment disappears instead this money goes towards an asset that you own When yes it is paid off you never have to buy electricity again It’s a no-brainer Again Dave Ramsey is a complete idiot Comment from : D K |
Getting a solar system was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made , I’m just sick that I’m paying for a system that is in storage , I’m at a lost to what to how to deal with this stupid mistake I made made What ever you do if you do get solar is DO NOT BUY FROM TEXAS HOME SOLAR , they are out of Houston Texas They are a rip off , I think I should’ve sued Comment from : Fed up patriot |
Ramsey is an idiot Comment from : Paul Lewis |
Solar isn’t like buying a pool You throw out money to the electric company every month You’re paying them anyway Why not own your power? Comment from : Buddy Fennell |
Sorry to say but you live in Texas Has its own awful poorly designed electrical grid because well it’s Texas Also to even use your solar it has to be hooked up to the grid That is unless you create your own so it is not really doomsday prep Comment from : Chase Boddicker |

The solar debt is the same as paying an electricity bill Comment from : Ben Oakland |
Man, that’s pricey and don’t make any sense! My house is big and my bill is a little high but $81k will pay off my electric bill in 30 years if not change!! I would try to negotiate price of everything itself if you’re paying cash Yes, this is why those solar companies don’t want to tell you the price of the system itself I always tell those sales people okay so what’s the price!? When they beat around the bush am closing my door Comment from : Perez Family Adventures |
Idk why they asking Dave debt questions The answer is are you flipping stupid 🤣😂🤣 Comment from : Tee Runnin |
82k he can put a huge down on another house and rent it out and actually own a property that will appreciate instead of a solar system that will depreciate with wear and tear and need maintenance and will not cover his electricity bill they lie too much to believe them Comment from : Hector Garza |
I’m a firm believer that this technology will eventually get cheaper But now? Comment from : Nate Radcliffe |
The break-even period is key! Comment from : Pedro Dominguez |
Watched this and noticed it was before the big power debacle in Texas If I lived in Texas I wouldn't risk it, I would do solar ASAP as my state is so foolish as to not connect with the rest of the country's power grid People died in the winter because they had no heat Comment from : Sue N |
No solar system build will cover 100 the entire point of solar is to offset that bill as much as possible depending on the property, some properties can actually handle 100 off set and the tax incentive depends on income 40k or more but if solar works it can save you money This old due has no idea what he’s talking about solar can put money in your pocket Comment from : What’s Up? |
I endorse Solar Technologies too and freaking think they're great but the problem is they're doing it in the wrong way and you have to do efficiency on your property to make them really effective and that is the problem with a lot of this is they're selling you solar but they're not doing any efficiency in the process and efficiency is the most important thing because the majority of times and I am a solar salesman you can't make enough electricity for these people to use on a roof Comment from : Nomad Daves tiny homes |
Your property and usage should be large enough for it to make sensebrIf your bill is less than $200/mo, that's gonna take years to break even after federal tax credits and state subsidies Comment from : 15K HP Club |
How about look at increasing your home insulation instead and reduce electric consumption through lifestyle changes Comment from : 1 1 |
EE major and it doesn’t even take that to Google it but solar is such a joke😂 Like maybe if you have a portion of your yard and I mean an acre or so don’t waste your money lol And don’t plan on a tangible return short of 20-30 years before you see something Comment from : Zachary Schoen |
Problem is you make $265k a year and don’t have cash! Comment from : Lawrence Franck |

Is it debt if it’s an asset? Don’t you have to pay energy cost no matter what? Also paying cash may be cheaper but if you leave the home in a few years than what? He talks about break even, if you finance the system you get instant savings in comparison to what you are CURRENTLY paying I hope nobody listens to what this guy has to say because he makes no sense He relates system to a pool but a pool you are not paying for unless you build the pool He’s already paying for power why not own it for less That’s the answer to how much solar costs, LESS than you are already paying Yes cash is king if you know for sure you are going to stay in house long term Other than that just finance the system and allocate the money you are ALREADY paying to own your power Comment from : Big Steven 91 |
Solar panels DEGRADE the power you get out of the panels drops over time, Comment from : Ghost Shadow |
