All this video showed is that solar needs massive amounts of welfare/free give-aways from tax payers in order to be viable Tax credits, use credits, installation creditsbrbrSCAM!!!! Comment from : D H |
What about maintenance costs on the panels? Comment from : Joe tarvainis |
Definitely matters to the Solar availability of the site, installation configuration and probably most importantly, net metering potential Our modest $11k (after rebates) 4 Kw system in sunny SoCa in the most expensive electricity market in the country but with an excellent (now, since modified) 1:1 NEM yields 100 offset with $40 to -$200 being our annual electric cost Five year ROI and 20 more years of free electricity Comment from : TDamon |
Will you do it now? If you do not have these panels et al? Comment from : Alex Zagariya |
I am hearing so many horror storiesand a ten year life span is not good enough for me Terrible when the companies fold just before your warranty ends Comment from : Emilie53 |
I had a solar company cold call my property and give me a quote today The problem i had was the hard sale, where I only had 2 hours to decide if I was going to sign along the dotted line I told them under no uncertain terms I was not going to make a hasty decision no matter the benefits of solar and payback period Comment from : M H |
You will not save money with solar panels unless you live so far off the grid that it would cost even more to get traditional power to the location Comment from : Bowdoin |
GC here Solar panels do not belong on a roof True you can have a new roof prior to the installation of solar panels But figure every 30 years you will need a new roof and new solar system Nobody is going to remove them and reinstall the old panels Now figure out the cost of when the solar system will pay for itself Comment from : AMX 390 |
We pay $011 per kilowatt here in So Texas Yet some people love their solar panels Friend works for big city electrical company and he says that the life of the panels are decreased by the lack of air flow underneath the panels in Texas due to heat buildup Comment from : Ruth Reid |
lol Comment from : David Hodgdon |
I have had solar installed that was the biggest waste of money I will never do this again Don't let them lie about how much you will save I am not saving the money I was told that I would be saving Comment from : tubler4u |

What does Solar Panels do to your homeowners insurance rates ? Comment from : Douglas Smith |
So, you are on welfare regarding your solar panel installation So glad my tax money can help fund your project Comment from : Christopher Eaton |
Thanks so much for the infoI was considering solar energy but not any more It's a very expensive scam😅 Comment from : Beto P |
In our area if you don't purchase the solar outright instead of a loan they aren't worth it Comment from : 81artmonk |
Solar is destroying nature, solar does not work with no sun Old solar panels are toxic and end up in Africa where they rot away and destroy nature Solar is a scam, we could have had free energy decades ago ( tesla tech what is kept away fron us People who think solar is good for nature is a fool Same goes for windmills that kill off millions of birds and insectsbut we do it to save nature right They want your money, all of itkeep spending for shit Comment from : SrLurksAlot |
We need to use residential 3d printing tech for these systems to be economically viable, the prototypes are in Stanford or the Australian special ink tech or we are just paying for expensive plasic and tech that do not have returns on the inital investment, deliberately misleading claims to promote these systems is fraudulentbrClaims that the raw materials used in production are less damaging to the environment than grid services is not true and the capacities and productivity of these systems need to be transparent brThey never perform as advertised which is the most common complaint Comment from : Leighton Sullivan |
Try that in Louisiana with hurricanes of all sizes and wind strengths and see how long those panels are going to stay on your roof????? Comment from : Raymond Arceneaux |
Yeah I am so glade I did the research on Solar before we bought they are flat out a scam imo am going the low rpm diesel generator for back up Comment from : iwantosavemoney |
Why did the hailstone get kicked out of the solar panel party?
br
brBecause it couldn't stop cracking jokes about how easily it shattered their expensive dreams of endless sunshine savings! Comment from : cookie jar |
How do you remove the solar panel lien on your house to sell, did you pay off the loan ? Comment from : James Fung |
I had mine for about 3 years I wish I knew that they could/would redefine net metering rules and you would be grandfathered for only few years I wish I knew the vote solar PACs seem to fight solar net metering changes based on impact to future sales rather than impacts to current net metering participants Comment from : Hise Chapman |
So the government forces electricity prices to almost double in the last 4 years (by forcing and funding the green energy scam), and you think this equates to you saving the cost of your setup The truth is, if they just built a nuclear plant (truly green energy) instead of running this green energy scam, you would not have had to transfer $29,00000 of your money to the government and power companies You're breaking even while people who cannot do what you have done, can no longer buy groceries and pay the electric bill which has doubled! Comment from : Richard Savoie |
I'm 10 years in on a net-meter system - NOT 1 BILL in that time No problems at all Comment from : Ron Stüder |
I have had solar panels for 11 years and it's been a big money saver on my electric bill Comment from : Richard Duerst |
My budget is $000, so if you could just do a video for a solar build on zero dollars, that would be great Also if you could do a video on having a house built from scratch on my zero dollar budget, it would be greatly appreciated Comment from : Tony DaWonderful |
Wow, I thought our $09999 for the first 500 and $13004 for over 500 kwh was high Comment from : Tuba Man |
This is a really really bad idea You've now damaged your shingles Now moisture gets in andyeah, bad idea Comment from : Maki Avelli |
I'm in Mass and using Energysage Do you mind telling me the excellent installer you used? Located Cape Cod Comment from : Ed Sinofsky |
Thanks for the information You could have sued the power wall installer for what It cost you to have it installed correctly If you paid them by check call your bank and ask for a copy of both sides of the check to get their account number Don’t tip them off They’ll change their bank After you win in small claims court you’ll need to go to the sheriffs and have them seize the amount of the cost of repair The sheriffs will charge you a small fee Be sure before you file in small claims court to include all fees incurred such as a private investigator and collection fees Comment from : Jim McIntyre |
add a battery to older systems to take advantage of even more stored power at times you would otherwise source from grid Comment from : Keith Prinn |
so if the tax payers subsidize your solar, AND tesla gives you a free battery, it pays for itself in like 7 years lol otherwise how long would this all take to break even, 15 years? how long does a panel last? how much does it cost to replace? are my stolen tax dollars going to subsidize that too? Comment from : Joe Pierce |
Solar is bullshit unless it can make you independent of the electricity grid Comment from : The Polemist |
You are not undecided Also, you gave yourself the full amount of the tax credit, which is incorrect Lastly, you should calculatek what the savings are without all of the kickbacks from the state and government which, quite frankly, you should not be getting, since that means that taxpayers are subsidizing your vanity project Lastly, the cost of energy from nuclear, coal, and, if possible, hydro would be much cheaper These silly "green" energy schemes have allowed governments to neglect the true grid I liked your video, but don't be disengenuous and say you are undecided Comment from : gregg ago |
10:55 "ROI has a very different calculation, depending (on your goals)" brHow does the goal affect one's return on investment? Comment from : Ihålig Rygg |
It all depends on location Like,me for example living in Greece it's definitely worth it There isn't even snow in the winters, they're sunny as well Comment from : Theurgy |
Excellent video - I love your analysis and thoroughness I wish "green" energy hadn't become some a politically divisive issue, because it's really just a straight cost-benefit proposition for a customer in a given area Well done sir! Comment from : TK Dunn |

Grid-tied solar panels keep my electric usage in the cheapest tier 1 or tier 2 pricing year round In the summer months I usually generate more power than I use, even with air conditioning When I installed a 5kW solar array on a newly installed roof, the panels completely offset the electric car I leased at about the same time They also act as additional insulation for the roof, which helps reduce heating and cooling requirements When the lease expired in 2017, I reverted to a petroleum-fueled car, and enjoyed the lower power bill With the government subsidies I received, the break-even point was still about 20 years due to the low cost of electric power in my city But that cost has begun to spike (as I expected) and the payback rate is accelerating If I ever add or replace panels, the current technology is much cheaper and more efficient Battery backup would be nice, but not worth the expense since power is pretty reliable here Batteries don't last 20 years, either, so they would require replacement more often I think I would prefer a backup generator that runs on natural gas Comment from : John Shalamskas |

How much would it cost to repair? Does your saving through the years go right back into the price to repair? Comment from : Patriot141 |
Interesting You say your bill is about $230/month Ours is $237/month in PA, so it's very similar We have some rebates but nowhere near as generous as MA When I told 3 different installers that our bill averaged $237/month, never heard from them again Almost like they didn't think they could sell the ROIbrbrAnother helpful hint for others watching this video, especially folks in climates where energy bills can vary widely depending on season: Installers will ask you what your most expensive monthly bill was in the past 12 months That's a ruse for them to be able to claim "We can save you 'x' amount off of that!" This neglects that that 1 monthly bill is the highest and an outlier, not the annual average Comment from : MJ |

you are a sweetheart for sharing so much know how Comment from : Sourie |

How long is the shelf life on panels?……(20 years Max?) Comment from : C C |

another thing to consider is the increase in your home insurance costs due to all of the "inconveniences" that he mentions many companies will not even insure the houses Comment from : Joam Inow |

I am terribly confused by your math Many providers in Massachusetts seem to be able to provide energy for around $014 to $016 per Kilowatt hour Why not use them?brbrThis would wreck your savings and payback time Lets look at it another way Your out of pocket was about $20,72600 HOWEVER the actual cost - was $29,60900 That $9,609 came from somewhere - it is a subsidy - so Please include it in your calculations BUT lets pretend you DON'T include it and run the mathbrbrNow the one thing that is simply strange is the SREC payouts - which makes about ZERO sense but that pays you $15,14640 over the 10 years - since it is simply something that government is requiring utility companies to do which if you THINK ABOUT IT is one of the reasons the cost of electricity has increased BUT whateverbrbrEVEN SO - lets take the amount of money that we have remaining which is ONLY $5,57960 - so YES at that point in time if your production is 6,549 kWh's at $015 per kWh your payback is going to be 568 years when you take the SREC payments into accountbrbrHowever what was the actual 'BREAK EVEN' cost of the power? For most people it is $015 ( or less ) per Kilowatt hour and has been for almost the last decade, I have not experienced a real rate increase in years The REAL payback at your usage level is Close to 2275 Years ( at a 3 average increase in Electricity production prices per year )brbrNow lets PRETEND you had $30,00000 that you were going to just pay for a system but instead you placed it in someplace like the stock market that returns on average over the past 100 years at between 8 and 10 Heck lets be NON aggressive and say 6 average returnbrbrOver that same time period your account EVEN WITH THE MONEY FOR UTILITIES COMING OUT ends that 22 year period of time at $54,13988brbrWhich is $24,13988 CASH POSITIVE!!!brbrNo matter how I am looking at this you lost money by placing solar panels on your roof Even when looking at the SREC payout you still lost money in the end ( though the cost of the energy you produced went from only costing ( cumulative ) from $0225 an hour ( over those 23 years ) to a whopping $0297 overall ( the sunk cost of the original $29,60900 PLUS the payouts to you of br$15,14640 ) brbrTHE MONEY COMES FROM SOMEWHERE! Nice one! 👍 Comment from : Saadon Aksah |

You take out governments paying you to do this stuff (incentives, reimbursements, this program that program) and it does not stand the test of market economics I had a friend in a major town in MA and they installed Wind Turbine Forget how atrociously ugly and loud it was They were convinced it would save the town money with incentives until it broke twice and maintenance blew away the savings for years It's the little things that become the big things Comment from : Joseph ODonnell |
Dont be fooled by this type of contrived garbage aimed at selling systems, or emotional validation, or simple virtue signalling by greenfolk The numbers never add up in reality over time, and there is no magical breakeven point or return on investment Solar has become a terrible scam operating between major corporations, governments, and unscrupulous installers and maintenance companies It is a free for all out there A pack of piranha's preying upon people simply looking to save money The industry is not designed to benefit the homeownerit is designed to use the gullible homeowner Hopefully one day the tech will exist, but it is not here yet unless you spend enormous sums When it is truly efficient it will become obviousit wont require wishful thinking Comment from : thatsbollox |
You paid 7k extra money over all but because you have this YT channel you were able to write off the entire cost as a business expense Good for you Comment from : Quentin Styger |
You failed to mention if you & your wife have EVs to plug into your home grid If not what is you plan to add that cost to your savings over time or have you thought of that? brThanks so muchbr& a great video Comment from : D L |
He mentioned a 37 kilowatt-hour price in 2023brI'm greatful to only be paying 1133 per kilowatt-hour which was $116 for Aug Comment from : Jody Abrigo |
Solar panels are obsolete and they waste Silver! Wait for the Tesla technology Comment from : J Landon |
Your electricity prices are a lot higher than where I am in WA state and as you point out, that helps the economics You said you pay just over 30 cents per kWh, our 'net' pricing after the myriad of various charges/refunds my last bill was just under 13 cents/kWh It's impressive that your installer's estimate of power production over years appears to be on the low side of what you actually producebrbrYou make some good points, like is net metering available where you live? If it's not, you really don't want to install too big a systembrbrAs a backup power source, batteries are crazy expensive I realize you use yours as a distributed battery system which helps off-set the cost but would you have installed a Powerwall if you had to also buy the Powerwall battery? As a backup power source, I'll stick with my 3 kW Honda generator Comment from : BruceV |
I'm in MA as well , can we chat? Comment from : Mark OHara |

Yuck hopefully that housebuild was only a representation bc that Floorplan really stinks!! Comment from : ol lady |
If you get a free Powerwall and $20k to pay for the solar panels they are totally worth it even in a terrible solar panel state like Massachusetts Got it Comment from : max1c |
Have had the same panels on the roof for 20 yrs I’m in California and I average $45 total a yr in payment the rest is offset by credit Booyah baby Comment from : Jam_Mstr_J |

What's the name of the company that scammed you? You should have included their name in the video Comment from : Bimmer Audi |

Thx for all of this info Also live in MA Great info Any issues with additional water/ice in your gutters? Comment from : Timmy TV |

For comparison, I had 42 Sunpower SPR225-BLK panels installed about 15 years ago, they are pretty worn-out by now Total price was $75,000 before credits, total capacity was 9450 watts, very similar to yours After 15 years the power is down substantially due to deterioration of the substrate, which was expected 2021 generation was 16,620 kWh which covered exactly 1/2 of our total usage, which was 32,000kWh Being part of SRP means about $70 per month in fees and taxes My panels are small compared to the new form-factor where you get 400 watts per panel, efficiency is pretty similar At least when new I suspect our panels wear out faster in Phoenix than they would in New England Comment from : Phillip Stafford |
So the system is heavily dependent on receiving Government subsidies from tax money collected under duress from other people No indication of replacement /maintenance cost Will you amortize cost before end of product life? Comment from : ntt1 |

How often do you clean the panels? Comment from : Taylor S |
You'll need to replace those panels and batteries after 15 to twenty years So no, monetarily solar panels are way more expensive Plus, batteries are way dirtier than fossil fuels Comment from : Deydrania Diancecht |
You rich people make me laugh …… not really Comment from : Antigone Freimann and Terry Stangle |
To my understanding of solar technology our atmosphere filters out all the UV radiation the panels This is why everything we put up in space orbiting earth has solar panels there’s no atmosphere Comment from : Carl Fritz |
I currently pay 622 per KWH; have a geothermal heating/cooling system; and my average electric bill is 12900 per month There's no way any of these expensive technologies makes any economic sense for me to spend that kind of cash But, I shouldn't dispair, the government is currently doing all it can to kill fossil fuels and make electricity a lot more expensive for us all Comment from : A Grace |
Solar panels on garage are two years old, roof underneath is 12 years old Hail damaged the roof, but shingles under the panels were fine as were the panels Our insurance would have covered removing the panels, but there was no need We only replaced the side that was damaged Comment from : Fhaynes |
How are the roof shingles replaced? Also, panels lose 1 per year of capacity Is there a strategy for replacing panel? Eg x panels per year after y years Comment from : Paul Sacco |
Panels weaken as they agealso all that has to come down and re installed when you re shinglesome insurance companies won't insure homesand looks like crap Comment from : Trent Lockert |
Why has cost of electricity shot up ? Money not collected in gas tax being collected Now being collected on electricity cost to cover the loss of EV not buying gas Should be just collected by a smart meter making EV charging pay the full cost Comment from : George196207 |
Cost to replace roofing suddenly triple What could go wrong with holes all over your roof , expansion and contraction ensures even silicon break under extra heat and cooling That tax refund is coming out of the tax pool no matter how you want to say it Comment from : George196207 |
For an historic home of multiple stories with complex gables and gutter systems, perhaps build a single story outbuilding with a new roof and install the panels on thatmaintence would be simplified as system matures Comment from : Lauricetto |

This is a serious question, and I understand if it's silly but why do Americans / Canadians build everything with wood? I get it - its cheap and available but brick is soooo much better - especially given the recent fire storms Just looking at the devastation left in last years fires the only thing left standing was the brick built chimney I just don't understand the logic of building a house that you KNOW you have to rebuild in 20-30 years Even without fires There must be a logic two nations are built on it I just don't get it Bricks dont burn and don't need replacing every 20-30 years The mid-build here in the UK would be a pre-fab but honestly, they burn as much, if not worse than wood No idea what they make those things out of, but are basically fireworks For me brick is first, breezeblock / cinder block next But I would never consider wood Anyway Why so much wood construction in the US? Comment from : Da Mighty Shabba |
So wait, you are making recommendations on going solar based on outdated panels and government incentives that are no longer available You claim based on this presentation that the entire system should be paid off in 7 years, but that math does not add up The math never works out on going solar Good luck Comment from : Chuck Thompson |
10:37 The cost of a Tesla Powerwall is certainly a killer For my wife and me, it doubled our system quote, which led to us ultimately putting the project on hold while we reevaluated what was most important to us We live in an more rural location where power outages occur more often than in urban settings, taking our water with it (well with electric pump) However, at 2x the cost of a whole-house gasoline generator that might get used, at most, 5(ish) times a year for anywhere between a few hours to a couple of daysthat's a tough pill to swallow Comment from : MNAP |
