Does the topdon change timing and the speed sensors? My subbie is 5 miles off under so it’s adding mileage that Isint real so I’m not happy about that Ppl have said put larger tires on it but that’s just silly I know it can be fixed I’m just unsure how Scan tools change everything in the ECU and that’s the way I think it should be fixed Comment from : DR Keegan |
Thank you Mr Subaru, as usual you give a great explanation I am a DIY guy with a 2013 Crosstrek Have changed my CVT fluid out twice, {drained it, dropped the pan cleaned it; installed new strainer, new fluid BUT NO way to check the CVT fluid temperature Would the Topdon AD500 meet THAT need for me please? {CVT fluid temp, in addition the water temperature?} Thank you in advance I just replaced my 10 year old coolant hoses, (Yes all 11, and the two thermostats AND the two cvt cooler/heater hoses} What a pain; but don't have to worry about any getting dry rot or bursting on me for another 10 years Used Gates hoses except for the two CVT fluid hoses to the cooler HAD to go to Subaru for those Comment from : Fred J |

VXDIAG interface goes for about $260 and it's SSM3 and SSM4 compatible Comment from : Ventsislav Simonov |
Before becoming disabled, I'd DIY everything on my cars, nowadays, the extra $500 is worth it, to me anywaybrThat being said, I still do a lot of DIY stuff, and have found that a scan tool, like the Blue Driver, works perfectly, for what I need, and is much cheaperbrStill, I could see getting some of these higher priced scan tools, if I were able to get my hands really dirtybrThanks for the heads up! Comment from : Kentucky Ranger |
Great video I've been having issues with both my Autel and Launch bidirectional scanners to control various EVAP and variable valve timing solenoids on pre-2010 Subarus Topdon's website says that the Phoenix Plus is compatible, but do you have experience with their bidirectional capabilities with older Subarus? It looks like Topdon uses some of the Launch software Thanks Comment from : Sean Crimmins |
I'm desperately searching for a sub-$1000 bidirectional scan tool for my 2009 Forester Specifically I'm looking for a scanner that will function check evap purge and vent valves on Subarus I've heard that Subaru locks out a lot bidirectional capability on aftermarket scan tools I'm really desperate because 3 dealerships now have no idea how to fix my P0453 and it prevents me from putting fuel in the tank They tore my evap apart and said there's no blockages and just shrugged and sent me on my way A local guy looked at it and I guess he has a SnapOn because he said he couldn't do anything to see what was going on Comment from : Mitch Dussault |
I have an AUTEL MaxiCheck MX808 for my 2016 outback and 2008 ram diesel and so far so good Mr Subaru… What do you think about this one for a DIYer ? Comment from : Dan Nu |
Great video I just changed out the lock-out solenoid on the CTV body valve I spent $480 on an Autel Maxicon mk808s to clear and AT relearn The 2023 versions have bi-directional functions, best value for my DIY needs to keep my 14 Forester XT alive But the TOPDON you referenced has a free 2 year upgrade, which autel does not🤔, now I got buyer’s remorse Comment from : Quillon Tsang |
Over the years as a technician ive beenumpersuaded to become the main electrical and diagnostic technician and I have been through a few different scan tools and I used to have that same snap on scan tool but I just found it didnt cover alot of what I needed but I always was using the scope functionsbut I ended up selling it to the shop and I bought a autel maxisys elite and a picoscope and still had money left to put in my pocket but I truly can not be happier with it and I was worried about taking that chance but it was the best 6k(for scanner scope leads and any available accessories for both and a cart to store everything in also) I have spent in a very long time I'd love to hear your thoughts on one if you have a chance to try one out note I work on mainly Subarus Porsche and Vw/audi vehicles and I can do 99 of everything I could do with the OEM tool including module coding key programming even on the European cars dsg transmission duel clutch adaptation and you name it brI'd really like to see what you think of it if you get your hands on one to try I'd bet money that you would be impressed and really like it Comment from : Whitey_B |
Just wondering if the top Don will do some of the bi directional functions that the snap on will not Also keys? Comment from : Jeff G |

Comment from : Adil Essawi |

I'm a DIY guy who also helps his friends I've been using the think diag it's a Bluetooth OBD2 sensor that works with an app on your phone and it's able to do diagnostic information for specific vehicles $40 a year for that make model brand ie Toyota Lexus or Honda Acura My most recent example of use was to bleed the brakes of my accurate TL I was able to choose which caliper I wanted to Auto bleed and I was able to use my phone to keep hitting the bleed button and it was able to Auto bleed until it came out clear no bubbles on each one Comment from : DruryLaneDicer |
YIKES !!!,,,In the past year I bought a 2008 ImprezaIn order to monitor the cooling systemwith the Subaru expected manufacturer defect / head gasketI have been watching COOLANT TEMP as I drive because the Impreza dash has an idiot lightwith a BLUE DRIVERthat does a bluetooth connection to my phoneFYI the blue cold light goes out at 122 degreesthe high temp red light comes on at around 230Even though the heater no longer works after adding not one but two Subaru "Cooling System Conditioners"it probably clogged the heater core As I look for a local mechanic who can diagnose and probably R & R the engineI did exclude the dealershipsBlue Driver around $10000 joe Comment from : Joe Diamond |
I bought a XTOOL D8 and a Thinkcar Thinktool PROS last year I returned the Thinkcar because it did not support certain features that they guaranteed (I emailed them directly) would be supported I chose the D8 because $700 is a reasonable entry cost, you get 3 years of free updates (vs 2 with others), and the yearly cost after the free period is less than it's competitors The main reason is that their customer support is top notch - I would email them a question and often times I will get a response in 1-3 days, whereas Thinkcar and other manufacturers would take at least 15 to twice as longbrbrThe one thing that people need to know is that if a manufacturer states their tool supports a particular feature, it may not support that feature for all makes/models Also, if that feature is not part of your car's capabilities, that tool can not support that feature (eg I can not bleed the ABS on my '03 WRX because it does not have that capability to begin with) Comment from : P FunkLife |
I never thought I'd say this, butan advantage of automobile's running on electric motorsthe scan tool monopoly will endas we'll as the Billy Bob part changer, tacking on parts not broke Comment from : Skee Bobalone |

As someone who does not know much about using a Diagnostic Scan Tool, I am curious to how these compare to just using the obd2 bluetooth adapter and the Adroid/IOS software for phones or tablets Comment from : Ezekiel Caldwell |
Are foxwell scanners like the NT301 ok to use on my 2008 outback? Comment from : Scott Hertzler |
I use the VXDiag interface with my ssm3 ssm4, its about $400, there is just an extra step you have to load drivers in the ssm program file folder Also use a pirated version of SSM, but have to change your laptop date back to 2020 ahahahahaha Shhhhh, I don't feel like paying 2 grand a year for DIY stuff on my 2020 STI ahahaha, don't hate me MrSuabru for cheaping out!!!😇😇😇😇 Comment from : Metal Madness |
Can the Phoenix elite program keys or fobs? Also can it reprogram the TPMS sensors? Comment from : Juan Rodriguez |

I myself have three subarus, and most of my friends have at least one and they consult me before going to the dealer most times This is an invaluable video for someone like myself Been trying to justify getting a scan tool for a while and I think I'll be picking up the Phoenix Lite II Comment from : Adam |
I have an Autel Maxipro MP808 which is between the prices of the tools you mentioned I don’t know how it compares but so far it’s done everything I’ve needed on a base model 2013 Outback without Eyesight At the time it was the cheapest bidirectional scanner I could find brBefore I bought that I bought a Bluedriver Bluetooth code reader which I still get plenty of use from since I leave it plugged in at all times and if a light comes on I can scan with my phone immediately, I’ve also used it before to monitor coolant temps on a steep mountain road Comment from : Kevin Siggins |
What is the biggest difference between the Phoenix Elite and the Phoenix Lite 2 for servicing Subaru vehicles? Great video Comment from : TEH60 |
What is the cheapest option that allows one to disable the evaporative system running/buzzing for quite a long duration (15 minutes) even though the vehicle is off I think this might be contributing to the battery drain issues with newer Subarus Comment from : Vin |

I have a VeePeak Bluetooth scanner that was around $30 I am able to read and clear codes as well as record information from different sensors, but it does not fully cover all aspects of the car like airbag sensors Comment from : Logtrimmer |
I need a cheap scanner that can access the VDC system on my car I have code C0071 which is the steering angle sensor, and it's not sending a signal I know that much for sure I don't have the funds to pay my mechanic to repair the SAS, and it's the only thing my car needs for a safetybrbrIt's a 2007 Legacy SpecB I am looking at the Autel AP200 since it says it can calibrate the SAS, but I'm not sure if that's the right tool for me Thanks in advance! Comment from : Skye Pijl |
Great video I was looking into the TOPDON features coverage I wanted to see if I could make an adjustment to VDC on my 2008 Outback with 2015 STi steering rack The steering angle vs G-sensor discrepancy causes VDC to come on sometimes so I have to disable it every time I drive Having the ability to program this would possibly solve the problem Comment from : C W |
Great video! Comment from : Scott Minshall |
Thanks for the video Robert great video Take care of yourself and family and be Blessed ❤️❤️ it Comment from : michael weatherhead |
Make me wanna just go back tonan’70 Nova with a small block… ugh $$$$$$$$brRight to repair apparently doesn’t mean right to repair affordably Comment from : Jeremy Land |
Good video and, as always, timely I'm currently keeping a couple of elderly Gen4 Outbacks alive (they've been excellent vehicles, one at 180k miles and the other at 108k) but my only "diagnostic tool" is a lowly Innova code reader - requires lots of intuition and thought process to link a code to the problem without merely unloading the parts cannon A scan tool surely would have helped me with my evap system woes Thanks, man You've convinced me to get off my wallet and find a scan tool My '19 F350 62 gasser is out of warranty and I'll have something to help if, God forbid, it starts having issues EDIT: Got my Topdon Phoenix Pro (between the Phoenix Elite and the Phoenix Lite) Comment from : Bullnuke Oldman |
Thanks for the reviews I just bought a ThinkDiag 2 (Phone/Tablet based app driven bluetooth dongle device) that seems to be almost identical to the TopDon interface/function in many of it's features I have only briefly used it to date, but it seems to offer a lot of features for the price especially for most DIY mechanic stuff I got mine for $125, which is more in line with my limited use for such a tool Comment from : Cajun Aggie |
I just bought a xtool d7 a few weeks ago Got it for 350ish Still learning what all it does Comment from : Tosh Miller |
Lol I've been waiting for this video Comment from : kyle bartel |

How about a video on a 2017 wrx with code p0018 my scan tool shows the cam phaser not returning to zero as commanded( takes longer than it should but eventually does return to zero) swapped ocv and sensors and no help I saw a article about the 2018 wrx has updated phaser due to sludge accumulation in them and causing problems I'm a aircraft and ex diesel mechanic so I can tackle a phaser change if needed I was wondering if there was a way to safely clean them out in place or something to help the situation The Subaru trouble shooting points to a problem with the ECM also My local Subaru dealer is absolutely no help and says they cannot tell me if there is a service bulletin concerning updated phasers Help Comment from : Randy Ahrens |
Thanks for the info! Any thoughts on say an Innova 5160? That is more along my budget I am an occasional DIYer Comment from : MrPoppyDuck |

Great video great information and research! Comment from : Jon K |
If you get one for your personal car will all the functions you currently have access to still work after the 2 years of free updates? Another way of putting it is are 'updates' just another word for 'subscription'? Comment from : Monkey PunchZ |
A good scan tool is good only if you know how to use it Comment from : Earthbound Martian |
DST-i is no longer in production DST-010 is only compatible down to 2014 Forester and cannot interface via SSM3 Comment from : Devan Sizemore |
Now this is a scan tool video I'm a DIYer but like a lot of DIYers I somehow became a reference point for friends and family without tools so I'm more of an unpaid fleet mechanic with a 9-5 Comment from : Seadalgo |
I doubt I can open and close the windows, but I think it can read and write almost everything I'd ever need with Autel MaxiAP AP200 OBD2 scanner with bluetooth to my cellphone for $50 at Amazon Comment from : New England |
tactrix allows to remap Anyone has tried SSM3/4 over vxdiag? ( Want to access VDC at home) Comment from : STEM queer |
If I may, I have a quick off-topic question I have a 2011 Outback 36 Limited It calls for 5W30 of course, but would it hurt to use a 0W40? Where I live, it can get pretty hot in the summer I am using Amsoil Synthetic, and would like to use a 5W40, however that grade is only available in a high SAPS European oil which I heard you shouldn't use due to some of the additives in it What do you think? Comment from : Siren Sara |
Thanks! Comment from : Wilson Hsi |
I borrowed an Autel 908TS to see if I can trigger and program the TPMS sensors on my 2020 WRX The tool would not trigger the sensors on the OEM wheelsbrIt had no trouble triggering and reading the sensors on my 2021 Alfa RomeobrIt had no trouble triggering and reading the sensors for a 2007 Chevy TrailblazerbrStrange Comment from : Jim D |
what about Gscan tools ? Comment from : Karim Hassan Elbanna |
