As a graduate with BA in Psychology with minor in Philosophy, I found out the hard way in my life that my studies gave me no step up in the job market to earn a income level I was shooting for My only job I ever had related to Psychology paid just 12k per year in 1988 I wish I would have chosen a different major that opened up my chances of making a decent income

I am in my 4th year of my Bachelor's and wanted to put this here because I had a lot of the same misconceptions about possible career paths after college and what was required to practice In my 2nd year, I started looking into this because I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue a doctorate after college You can become a licensed therapist with a Master's degree A PhD will get you the "psychologist" title, but you can become an LCSW, LMFT, LPC with a Master's degree I think a lot of us aren't aware of this when picking this major so I hope this helps anyone with these same questions It's always helpful to look up the specific requirements for your state, though!

As a psych major myself, I wanted to give my two cents on the jobs you can get with all three degrees Yes, there is a caveat with psych in that if you want to pursue a job as a LICENSED psychologist you do have to go for the full PhD or PsyD brBUT that is not to say that you are limited in your options if you want to pursue just a bachelors or Masters brWith a bachelors, you CAN work in some social work positions, positions held through the government such as foster care, mental institutions, adoption agencies, etc The biggest con is that the pay is lacking, generally speakingbrWith a masters degree in clinical psych or counseling, you can do LOADS more! You CAN have a private therapy practice, licensed mental health counseling, specialized counseling, higher paying social worker positions, and your pay is better than that of BA degree This opens up your options exponentially and you can be able to work in your specialty, with the choice of being a licensed or unlicensed professionalbrWith a PhD/PsyD, you can do just about everything, including the official psychologist licensure You can start your own psychology practice, join a psych firm, and offer your own individual hourly rates You get THE most training, with over 2,000 hours of required training hours - making you the most qualified for in-depth therapy techniques and practices In terms of research, you can join research institutes and facilitate your own research funded by APA Having a PhD/PsyD is the highest paying profession out of the three It’s biggest caveat is the student loan debt that you will have to manage and account for brSo, it’s kinda a matter of weighing the pros and cons for YOU and your career path No two degrees are ‘the best’ in of itself If you’re interested in graduate school for psych, be sure to do your research! But know that you are not limited in your career options regardless of what you choose

Just to add another point as a current senior undergrad psych student: A lot of jobs are definitely unavailable unless you 1st get a PhD and an actual therapist license No matter what, it’s gonna be a lot of work, but a lot of grad programs will pay for your tuition for being a Teachers Assistant or Research Assistant However, a lot of this stuff is VERY unknown to 1st or 2nd years and I genuinely had no idea what my post-undergrad career path was going to be (still trying to figure it out rn) and I didn’t really understand what grad school for psych was like until I took clinical psychology my 3rd semester (recommend taking this class if your college offers it)

This video is a little misleading I believe that this girl failed to mentioned some crucial details here Yes, BA in psychology gives you limited jobs opportunities/or jobs you’re not interested in However, master in psychology is 2 years program and it makes big difference You can choose so many different paths/ different jobs PhD is necessary only if you’re into research or your goal is to be a professor

So I’m a undergrad in psych My college only offers a BA and not BS so I’ve been taking classes that would be more related to a BS in psych rather than a BA I’m going into my junior year very soon and I have only about 3 semesters left Should I just stay within my school or transfer? Most people do not set out to be Clinical psychologist rightout of the gate I Dual major with 2 seperate masters in psychology I currently am a licensed clinical psychological assessor It is one of the most boring and tedious aspects of the mental health industry especially the fact that we started switching to DCM-10 diagnostic system when I completed my first Masters in Psychiatric Health Sciences Nursing focusedand have as you know phased out the DSM IV as far as diagnostic codes and the process we use now to identify symptomatic aspects and conditions before we apply the actual diagnosisthis is opposite of how we did it with the DSM IV alone in the past I will someday hopefully be accepted into a PhD program for Clinical Psychologist by 2025My second Masters in is I/O Psychology focus leadershipand I am wondering why the one at your University did not establish your true desire and passion when advising you? We are trained and passionate about making sure as academic advisers to make sure with such a unrewarding financially pre-doctorates career limitation to not allow a student to pursue psych major based on Material motivations

Thinking of joining the military while im in school to become a psychologist You can get a job in the military that deal with mental health and you’ll learn it along the way while having the benefits and job plus staying in the dorms to save while the military pays for your school getting a phd would be nice but it does take a lot of schooling and hard work but helping people is what we were out here to do we all have a purpose to contribute back to the human race and if it does take a lot of schooling and money oh well we only have 1 life in this earth knowledge, time and passion will come with you money will stay here

A Bachelor of Science in Psychology think a perspective as a trampoline to jump into broader grad school Psychology gives you the tools to be very competent in things as critical thinking at the moments of exams for Grad school If you don’t want to go to Grad school majoring psychology is a bad idea but if you are thinking to go into grad school psychology will give you so many tools for grad school

What if I was looking into becoming a high school psychology teacher? I don't think you'd need a PhD for that, right? 😂 What was the highest math and the highest science you went to? Just curious because those are my worst subjects (I am aware psychology is a science HAHA) I'm in AP Psychology right now (junior in high school) and I've gotten good grades so far I'm conflicted about what I want to do in the future but being a teacher has always been a thought I was always leaning towards the elementary school teacher path, but recently I've been looking into being a high school teacher, which means I need to have a subject to teach!
