Thank you very much for saying that architecture education (at least how it is in the US and Canada) is a failure The fact we have to get thousands of hours mandated by NCARB before we can get licensed, in addition to testing, shows that our education was largely worthless I'm saying this as someone who has also taught, am currently mentoring two interns, and still occassionally does guest crits It cannot be stressed enough too how difficult it is to get all those hours and many firms aren't going to be interested enough to help aspiring architects get those hours Further those hours have to be certified by a licensed architect If you work for someone in a related field (structural engineering, landscape architecture, etc) even if you're doing architecture at most only half of those hours can count and you still need a licensed architect to sign off on them Also for what most people in school or outside of architecture don't realize is how much of our work isn't visual A lot of my work is more similar to being a lawyer than a visual artists with things like interpreting the code and presenting arguments to code officials, writing and interpreting contracts, and dealing with language of specifications One thing that many, even those in the field, don't understand is that Construction Documents are actually legal documents and a mistake in a detail can result in lawsuits or worse As such we have to approach our work with consideration of not only design principles but legal obligation As someone once told me on my first job out of college "The two most important things in architecture Don't trust Contractors and don't get sued" Comment from : rocketsjudoka |

Hey, your videos are great and you have really helped me get a general idea about having a career in architecture I'm currently going to start A Levels so I do have a bit of time to solidify my decision on committing to become an architect I just wanted to know if you've ever been tempted or even thought about starting your own architecture firm? Are architects paid well enough that they can start a firm by themselves after saving for a few years, and be able to keep it running in the first 5 years? I'm thinking of ultimately starting a firm myself but need clarification on these things Other than that, keep on making these extremely helpful, no bs, and insightful videos! Danke! I've been watching a lot of stuff on architecture as a career and every single of them says how creativity is absolutely needed for me to improve So growing up I never had the opportunity to do practical crafts or explore building things and now I'm doing my A levels, personally im under a lot of pressure that I can't even spare the time to make something and even If I do, I usually run out of energy I've never really been able to see the potential creativity in me, do you think I should still take arch? People ask if I'm creative enough but that's the thing I literally have no idea but I want to find out if I have the potential in me, given that I never had the resources or the opportunity to design something Comment from : Saika Mahmud |
|
videos like this have helped keep me committed to this field professionallythnx Comment from : derek askari dupont |

people who complain about architecture are just lazy ambitionless people, you don't just give up and talk shit about a major just cuz you failed to be something, being something isn't easy or simple it needs time, patience, passion, and practice for years Comment from : GG OO |

One thing not mentioned here is to learn revit and navisworks *while you're in school* The admin, legal, and business aspect will come with experience and networking but collaborating and conveying ideas about space usage is done thru modeling software Revit is tricky with a steep learning curve so it's better to learn that while young You'll never lose it anyways, it's like riding a bike Comment from : Cheh Chang-Ho |

Me watching this in my 3rd year in Architecture School Comment from : Mik |

My daughter is just finishing her Barch Getting ready to go to grad school I work on the contracting side of the equation for a commercial construction firm Architecture school does little to prepare an individual to perform in the "real world" I implore to everyone considering Architectural school to make sure you take any and all classes (these are typically electives) that have to do with contract administration, specifications, etc Architecture school is heavy on design and creativity, but provides little to teach someone to properly assemble a set of drawings and specifications (project manual) for use in bidding and building a project Comment from : LeftOverPorkChop |
|
I was expecting a lot about this video based on real experience My daughter has not made up her mind but study architecture is one of her options, but look at the amount of effort in term of time and work investment as an architect in the field compared to the salary or fee, I don't think it is worth it Comment from : Seng S |

I wants to design classical buildings and possibly even cities, I’ve been want to be an architect for a while now but after experiencing my high school principals of architecture course I’ve come to the conclusion that the system in most schools isn’t designed for someone like me and my desires I also realized I can’t draft productively in a dismal modern environment as most schools are boring in nature When contemplating how I use my college tuition, I feel distressed as I don’t want to pay to work in a mental prison for the rest of my life Comment from : Boundless Matter |

Here's what you need to know: buildings are easy It's people who are difficult brYou are never going to get taught anything about people at university (you'll be lucky if you get taught anything about buildings, but that's another story), but understanding your clients, and getting your clients to agree with each other, and extracting the REAL brief from your clients, and extracting the REAL budget, and preparing your clients for the building process, and getting your clients to agree that there will be no further changes to the design, and that the building contract is a legal thing and not something they can change at a whimand on and onTHAT'S the real challenge of an architect's life You might think you are going to be spending your time colour-washing sketches and doing glorious photo-real renderingsyou're not That's 5 of the job Most of the time you metaphorically have your hands dirty in the nuts and bolts of engine compartment, and spend almost no time thinking about what the car looks like Most of the rest of your time is spent talking to people, and dealing with a multiplicty of their frustrations and ignorance Comment from : MikeAG333 |
