Kia's are crappy cars My Toyota Prius Plugin can do the city journey with a full charge, which is only 65 kWh of usable charge And on the motorway I would have done 90 MPG Comment from : The Tramp |
Octupus shills with their "75p charge" scam EV are not worth it, they'll ramp up prices Comment from : Bort Stanson |
Omgthis has opened my eyes Comment from : Moinul Alam |

Got 2 EV’s , i3 & MeganEbrFortunate enough to have solar panels and try to charge when it’s sunnybrDon’t do a lot of motorway travelling so find cars very cheap to run Comment from : Bryan Stoneman |
I don't understand why you costed the petrol up by litres used and didn,t do the same thing with the instavolt charge Or use the additional unused instavolt power as a credit for the next daybrbrIts true that public chargers need tighter regulation as you pointed out, but with this sloppy calculation you are effectively slewing the test against the ev killing off alk your pointsbrbrI presume you all stopped for lunch? Why didn't you find an EV in birmingham to charge while eating? It would have saved the motorway stop and likely been cheaper This test just represents very poor planning for the ev drive Comment from : silly vids |
Great video and my purchase yesterday of a petrol car makes me feel so much better Comment from : Philip Mc Elroy |
This shows that electric cars only really suit some people The real winner is the normal petrol hybrid as its cheaper than electric to run on a longer journey and 8,500 cheaper to buy The EV only suits those who live and work in the capital Comment from : rich Williams |
Energy prices here in Poland have gone up 3x over the last year, but still it's about 50 cheaper to drive an EV than a petrol car when charging at home, especially when you have a PV system Public charging more or less equals the costs, especially when you charge on fast DC chargers - AC is slightly cheaper One thing about charging on the road - the fastest rate you get up to about 60 SoC, so it is a waste of time to charge up to 100 Better make more shorter stops (one does need to pee) than one longer - this yerar's about 1000km trip to Austria required 4 charging stops for about 20-30 mins Comment from : Paweł Kropi |
I dont think this was well thought out unless your intentions was to make EV and PHV look bad Comment from : Ben Johansson |
Your first trip would have cost me £774 is my Tesla model S and the second trip £095 brCharging on "Octopus Go" tariff at £009 per KW brOnly stupid EV drivers pay more, and only gullible people believe your silly tests Comment from : Peter Wright |
This only applies to the UK, where I live most supermarkets and our local hospital, all offer free charging to customers/users because the car parks are all covered by solar panels plus the UK has the highest electricity prices in the European region I pay €02062 - Kwh Comment from : arfamortis1 |
Tottally shocked , i thought the EV would be cheaper by a mile, food for thought Comment from : Snow |
4:05 Why not charging both plugin cars during the "quick coffee" at Birmingham ? Even if it is just for 15 minutes For the EV, it could have been enough not to stop on the way back Regarding the stop on the way back, wasn't the car able to heat the battery to charge at a higher power ? Most recent EVs do, but I do not know for this model Comment from : Didier Puzenat |
Phev and hev models are not 8 speed! They are 6 speed What made you write 8 speed there? @whichcar Comment from : Firat OZKOK |
If you live in a big city, like London for example, will you have the ability to charge at home or will you be reliant on public charging? If so, what would the cost work out at? Comment from : RD55 |
You really should be ashamed producing guff like this Nobody, but nobody who owns an EV would pay 75p/kWh to charge in a public charger, or 30p/kWh to charge at home As other comments point out, you pay 75p to charge at home (if you don’t have free solar) and perhaps 38p at a fast charger Also, a single long trip is not representative of the costs of running a car Most car use is well within even a short range EV’s capability, so you may only use fast chargers 2 or 3 times a year Comment from : TheBlacknBlue |
Hybrid only Electric cars and trucks over One million have been stolen in the United states of America Number 1 most stolen vehicles because there 100 percent electric Comment from : Betty Davis is Hacked |
An interesting test, but doesn't take things like maintenance costs, road tax and insurance into account over time as well, which makes it a little irrelevant really, unless you can hire anyone of the three for the same daily rate Food for thought though, in terms of the differences in charging at home and out on the road Comment from : David Sanders |
My 20 yo diesel gets more MPG than these hybrids smh Comment from : Just for LOLZ |
I think the thing to do is bear in mind that he could have topped up the battery while they had the coffee in Birmingham He could have use a cheaper public charger He could have put less in and he could have home charged at 75p per kWh All things that would have brought the cost of the electric journey right down Comment from : Andrew Harland |
What a crock of s**t ! Are you trying to put people off EV’s ? Very misleading video “what car “ tut tut !! Comment from : Thomas Shuck |
Well, another interesting fact is the hybrid use 22 litres which is equivalent to 220kWh and the EV use only 86kWh So in term of energy consumption, hybrid is around to 2,6x more than EVbrIn France, using Tesla charger for example (0,30£) and at home (0,20£) the total cost would have been 23,35£ for the EV So your problem is really the charging cost Comment from : pax24 |
All the EV lovers and EV fanboys comments on here are absolutely glorious 😂😂😂 Comment from : Ducky Dashcam |
Why I’m investing in a mild hybrid next time, I’ve done the sums and living outside the city a full EV makes no sense at all My wife drives a mild hybrid Volvo which is cheaper to run than her previous diesel and has a near 200hp engine It’s something like a Kia or Toyota hybrid for me, probably the Yaris Cross as I’m now retired😀 Comment from : Ian Ted |
I'm running PHEV and charging it for free at home And also, the daily journey is usually only 4-5 mile so currently I'm quite happy Comment from : Jiwoo Choi |
The point you're missing is that the maintenance costs in the EV are drastically lower than the ICE cars Comment from : Dean Harvey |
Unless your journeys are very short public chargers are probably going to be required more than people think Very interesting outcome Most people seem to like hiding, or not admitting the real cost of EVs in both time and money Comment from : adrian coelho |
For me one of the big problems with all electric cars in a city is that there's a good chance you're not going to be able to park next to your house on a drive or in a garage so your reliant on charging points to recharge your battery that is not on your domestic supply What if you live in a block of flats or in a terrace or anywhere that you have to park on the road or in a large car park you're not going to be able to charge your car on your domestic tariff I see this as one of the biggest hindrances along with two or three others the all hang around infrastructure that are in the way of high volume EV adoption Comment from : Stephen Catton |
For a 40 mile per day mostly motorway commute in a PHEV Charging at work costs £1:40 a day and I get 80 mpg in summer Comment from : Stephen Bagwell |
So taking into account the initial cost price of the cars, the EV is quite a bit more expensive Not surprised Scam Comment from : skidcrew |
Car dealers where I live are stacked out with used EV as no one is buying - not even with the offer of a free charger installation As dealers start to realise they are taking a caning on future predicted values, these will start to drop meaning the monthly contract price will increase dramatically Comment from : Ian Ingram |
My LPG does 11 miles per litre at £080 per litre on a motorway So the 270 miles would cost 245 litres @80ppl or £1960 That is 30+ cheaper than the cheapest car Car costs less than £20K Comment from : Trevor Mison |
I can not pick at this in many ways I would say though if your relying on expensive public charging 100 of the time I’d suggest not going electric unless you can get a decent discount on public charging Your likely better off buying a hybrid until you can get some off road parking for home charging Or speak to your local council about having community chargers out in place if possible I have friends who choose to drive an efficient diesel who do a lot of long motorway miles on a daily basis They cannot charge cheaply at home so therefore likely not worth going electric for them as their company does not pay them mileage allowance on an EV, which is a real shame Workplace charging needs to be implemented massively as I think this could be huge incentive for people to consider 100 electric driving Comment from : Greasy 5th Wheel |
I am shocked how low consumption of the hybrid one Both motorway and town driving gives are same (which I know from Corolla Hybrid ) but they are damm low Comment from : Aydın Toprak |
Probably one of the more useful car videos I have watched, well done and thanks Would be good to see this done for other brands also if possible where equivalent cars are available Comment from : Jean Junker |
I bought a citroen c4 grand Picasso 16hdi and is more fuel efficient than those 3 kits you are drivingbrBy the way, please dedicate this test to Robert Llewellyn of fully charged😂😂 Comment from : Nice-oscar |
the regular hybrid seems like the way to go Comment from : nate |
6:19 not a fan of the random miscoloured panel Looks like the cars been crashed and repaired Perhaps darker panel on a light colour would be better Comment from : YourAverageJoe |
This is a bad test, hardly anyone will ever charge on peak rate at home… messes the results up Comment from : Elliott Quinton |
Where do you get 30p to charge at home, it is 75p, 25 of the cost Your test in my view is totally discredited Comment from : Mike Joseph |
Ev is scams😅 Comment from : Tech review |
For a proper test you should compare against a proper EV, like the Model 3, which runs more efficiently than the Kia (and charges faster) Comment from : Kevin Wong |
I agree with most other people here If you have home charging capacity, EV is the logical choice over medium to long term brbrMy concern is that if enough people switch over to EV and the government loses out on the petrol and diesel tax revenue, they'll just pull a bait and switch and hammer everyone with more electric tax and per-mile charges Comment from : Dom |
Only fools buy EVs Comment from : graham midwinter |
I'm a petrol and diesel car owner (at the moment) and while the test is useful and has it's merits its also fairly inaccurate to the majority of EV drivers Home charging can be had for as little as 75p per KWH which is 4x cheaper than the figures used in the test and would have made the city drive cost just 79p The EV driver also put more electricity than he needed to on the public charger so again, there could have been less at £075p per KWH and more at 75p per KWH Comment from : Matt Stambach |
You guys seem to be getting ripped off by the cost of electricity in the UK! brThis is crazy, the EV trip should have costed half of the one made on gas, with the PHEV somewhere in between! Instead of that, the gas trip is the cheaper This is plain stupid and says a lot about what happens now in the UK Sorry, no pun intended :/ Comment from : Mircea Dunka |
This is a nonsense review regarding costs I have the Niro EV and I mostly charge it at home during the day using my solar panels I live in Perth, Western Australia so it's sunny a lot I charge it at work when it's cloudy and it costs 30cents (about 20 pence) per KWH at a charger that has a charge rate of 10KW, so I can charge the battery from zero to 100 in less than 7 hours which easily fits into my work day Service costs for an EV are a fraction of the cost compaded to ICEbrFinally, the Niro EV is an absolute joy to drive Comment from : Mike Warner |
Electricity costs are ridiculously higher in UK than in Ontario, Canada where off peak home electricity is CAD $0074/kWh or GBP £00423/kWh Instead of GBP £315 for the London trip, it would be GBP £046 brbrAs for the long distance run, Electrify Canada charges CAD $027/minute for 0-90kW fast charging, a 34-minute charge is CAD $918 or GBP £536 vs £3863 The round trip with fast charging costs and home charging at £149 gives us a total of £685 compared to £4898 Comment from : Olde Bill |
Nice review Comment from : ahlun37 |
Between the 3,I choose the ev The plug in hybrid, only if you drive in town Unless you have the money to buy the plug in hybrid from Mercedes suv with 63 miles range and a 20 lt diesel if i remember So my question is ,which is the best plug in hybrid for long journey, and cheap to run Comment from : Silvio C |
Anti electric propaganda from what car lol 😂 most electric car owners do the vast majority of their charging at home I pay 95p per kWh with Octopus, and the occasional longer trip requiring some public charging costs are easily outweighed by the normal cheap home charging -Commenters who can't charge at home probably shouldn't buy an electric car anyway Comment from : Mikey Moo Lane |
Why not also have a car using fuel, to compare all four Having all of these kinds does that not make it more expensive to make cars? Comment from : Kevin Darroch |
Just wondering if the plug in hybrid was run exactly the same as the standard hybrid, that is to say the car controlled the use of the battery from start to finish without driver input, would it have achieved the same result as the standard hybrid But with more battery, would it have been better than the standard hybrid? Comment from : CjD |
Charge my EV at home mostly and have solar, so havnt had to really pay anything to charge the car Electricity rates are also pretty low in my section of the US at about 12 cents per KWh so if I was to pay, it would be less than a gas car Tesla included a load of supercharge miles when I got it, but if I was to pay it would be way more per mile than a traditional gas car Take away from my experience is that EVs can be great for the around town commutes and cost less there, but cost way more on the road trip side I agree that fast charge rates are something governments should look at to incentivize EV adoption I also think that in a few years time, as gas becomes more expensive and green energy stays cheap, that the supercharging will become cost competitive with gas That is unless greedy capitalism has something to do with it Comment from : Tim Campbell |
Just another poor piece of anti EV journalism imo No EV driver would have taken this approach and incurred these costs, it's ludicrous No mention of cheaper tariffs for electricity at all If you calculated the average cost/mile for a EV driver it would be a fraction of the cost/mile for an ICE vehicle Comment from : K Dry |
Now get a tune up on all 3 Comment from : Robert Calderon |
After watching this I’ll just stick to my petrol car Comment from : FinnMan |
No one mentions the most important point here - the amount of carbon and other pollutants released into the atmospherebrAround 25g of CO2 for the electric car 180g from petrol car of CO2brWe can’t go on dumping our S**T into the atmosphere Comment from : Charles Stewart |
Thank you for doing real life test driving and cost break down I wish someone would do something like this for the US Our electricity and gas prices vary quite a bit from state to state though so it may be harder to do Comment from : real estate now |
So a big factor of this is the ev choice My ioniq 6 gets between 38 and 41 mi/kw highway & between 45-55 city With a 305 mile range i very often to 1-15 hrs day trips without needing to fast charge My total savings for an ev have been arounf 1300 dollars over 4 months from my previous car Would it be cheaper if i had come hybrid? Maybe But at the same time, we cannot transition fast enough to cleaner methods of transportation So letting the car companies get away with justifying hybrids for a few more years seems unethical Our kids futures is worth the extra cost Comment from : Dakota Pahel-Short |
Twickenham to Birmingham and back is not a long journey!brBet you couldn’t do that round trip 3 times in an EV unlike my diesel 3008 and, without stopping at all Comment from : steven moran |
charging at instavolt - most expensive and not well placed charging network?! I home charge my car on OVO anytime for 10p per kWh 270 miles trip costs me £7 in my 400 BHP fan car If I need to use public charger - tesla superchargers are 35-45pence per kWh and close to 30p in FrancebrAnd next day , I am again fully charged for another journey with no need to waste time and money at a diesel station Comment from : Yu Ki |
My Honda Civic 16 diesel does about 70mpg so would have cost £3570 for the motorway journey And it cost £8000 Mmm Comment from : Quiet Englishman |
What is the replacement cost of a car battery The replacement cost should also be reflected in a comparison test😊 Comment from : manfred rothel |
75p per kWh! Wow Comment from : Nick S |
I think you should take into consideration, that most EVs don't go at the speed limit brThe speedlimit here in Denmark is mostly 130 km/h on the highway, but most EVs keep it around 110 km/h and that 20 km/h difference make a HUGE difference in rangebrbrSo No: The EVs don't ihave/i to stop to charge They can just drive at a reduced speed, and still make the journey Comment from : Trebs |
So the conclusion is PHEV ( are good only if your a soccer mom) , ELECTRIC allways makes you waste time at a charger and costs more and the normal Hybrid is the best solution Comment from : B CM-N7 |
Ha Ha Ha ,,, the ev driver concluded that he could charge the car cheaper IF he charged at homeSOif you want to reduce the charge rate while working, YOU NEED TO RETURN HOMEWhat a farcespending MORE TIME OFF ROAD AT HOME, Comment from : James Bowskill |
This test IS flawedThey dont have an ICE car to compare it tobrbrI can tell you what the answer to this test will bebrOwning & driving one of these 'contraptions' IS a time wasting & very expensive disaster that WILL destroy your nerves before you lose your job for OFF THE ROAD charging Comment from : James Bowskill |
I have a Toyota Rav4 plug in I get about 50 miles to a charge in summer The average I get is 3kwh per mile When it is on hybrid I get over 54mpg on the motorway I only charge it at home From home for daily daily use I use electric It is very efficient on A roads in hybrid and i have got 60mpg I had a diesel before and it is as efficient In winter I get just over 40 miles on electric Comment from : J W |
Really HC off peak at 75p PKW Could just use enough to get home Really poor comparison Comment from : Alvon May |
I drive an A Class 250e PHEV and what you didn’t take into account was the regen, on the long journey my car will normally give me about 60+ miles range Comment from : Kevin Ansell |
