Beginner question: is there a reason why the whole chuck is always exposed? In other power tools rotating parts have some kind of shield Feel like once everything is setup, just the controls need to be exposed while the lathe is in operation? Comment from : Ajax Muchacha |

My junior high school wood shop teacher, Mr Weinbergbrhad a plate fastened over the On-Off switch that had a hole drilled in itbrbrYou had to put the handle of the chuck key through that hole to press the On buttonbrIt worked perfectly, 'every time Comment from : gary gerard |

All of your tutorials are done with a high quality of excellence Without realizing it you always answer a question that most instructors neglect The question is, 'Why do we do this>' When I attended tech in another field, I had worked in the field and knew the questions and answers that students needed to know It put the instructor on track to provide ALL of the information students needed Quinn, as I've said already, YOU provide a great presentation to enable us to learn from you You are a great intructor(I think I'm in love LOL) I've subscribed to ALL of your videos I can see there is so much to learn and at 67 I still enjoy learning Comment from : Doyle Holmes |

Comment from : MarethyuPrefect |

As a feller who has lots of welding/fabrication experience, my buddies are often praising my skills I like to hit YT and watch some machining videos, it’s oh so humbling! The more I watch videos on the topic, the more I realize I don’t even know what I don’t know about machining I have turned more brake rotors and drums than I can count, so I have a small understanding of lathe basics Thanks for putting together these very informative video series’, looking forward to binge-watching I’m here to start at the beginning! 👍 Comment from : Carport Shenanigans |

The chuck key discipline reminds me of tightening discipline in general If you leave and come back to your work in the middle of tightening it you will forget to tighten it Once you go to tighten something you have to finish tightening Comment from : Mawo |

Beautifully explained we have an old battered Axminster where I work and I'm trying to fix it up and learn how to use it I instantly made a mistake, I was wearing overalls with long sleeves and gloves (welding habbit) I will make sure I don't do that again Thank you Comment from : Bexington |
|
Random idea for the Chuck key discipline part: have it on a wrist loop as soon as it leaves its "home" Comment from : H K |
|
0:56 "Chuck Key Discipline" Where did you get that key with the spring-loaded collar? I have a cheap Busy Bee lathe-mill combo and at that price point, you get nothing special I wish I had a Schaublin lathe or at least an EMCO I guess I can make that mod on my key I think I remember my key flying out a long time ago Now you know why we use checklists in aviation Comment from : A C E |
|

Hi Quinn I've been wtaching your tutorial on machining with growing enthousiasm !! Never found any beter explanation on the internet ! Thx for your amazing videos ! Finally some video's without all those fancy and expensive words other "pro's" like to use !! But I have a (maybe stupid) question I at the point of buying a lathe but I'm wondering : is it possible (and a good idea) tu use a metal lathe to machine wood ?? Or better to buy one for metal and one for wood? I don't have that much room in my shed, so it would help a lot if I could use 1 for both metal and wood For the wood I would be using wood chisels ofcourse Thx for your answer ! Comment from : Bart Segers |

A dumb question can a metal turning lathe be used for woodworking? I know it will do the job but will there be negative effects to the machine? I mean wood is softer but usually there is moisture in it and it produces diffrent chips that may be hard to remove? Anything not so obvious saying "DONT DO THAT"? Comment from : Ev0ltion |
|
I am thinking of purchasing a Warco WM50V which I think is very similar to your Precession Matthews Are you happy with it? Comment from : Anthony Newton |
