Selling 10k copies of a book with organic growth and marketing is actually a task, believe it or not (I work in the industry) But I will agree that hyper-specific niches water down the impact of best seller categories, looking at you Amazon and 50+ subgenres of Urban Fantasy Comment from : J S Elliot |
Amazon is the same, lol! Comment from : JERRY RICHARDSON |

I wonder if it's the same thing as when movie critics ( or studios) call a certain movie "the number 1 movie in the world" for an advertisement for a movie that already came out Despite that not really being the truth Comment from : JustAnotherInternetWiseGuy |

10,000 copies is a lot of copies sold and considered a commercial success If a stadium full of people are willing to buy a book, it gets my attention People who have marketed books know how hard that is Comment from : The Tributary |
As a bookworm I can tell that hardback and paper back are huge differences! Paperbacks are usually floppier and easier to read without breaking the spine! They are also cheaper Hardbacks are sturdy and more expensive Hardbacks are also almost always taller than paperbacks so they can be harder to fit on a shelf I do agree though that every book is a New York Times Bestseller though Comment from : ItzZoZo Fashion |
How many books are there totally Comment from : Pradyumn |
Hardcovers and paperbacks have historically been different genres Now more “literary” works are being published as paperbacks, but before a “paperback” was seen as less literary Comment from : Itzhak |

Seems like this is more for the author than the reader Comment from : Jordy G |
A lot of what you’re saying is true but I think this would have been more factually presented if you had placed it in context You give away your lack of understanding the book market by your comments on hardcover vs softcover and the lack of context to the numbers That aside, ranking the books by genre allows for readers to find the popular books that suit their tastes Otherwise it would all be Thriller and Romance which outsell the other genres almost exponentially Comment from : Jae S |
It's probably because the ones that actually make the list are the ones that get publicity so you don't tend to hear about the ones that aren't "bestsellers" Comment from : Mayo Agard-Olubo |
Thank you I was wondering this the other day Comment from : MamaJo |

Just for US books right? Comment from : Bel Rossy |
The other reason it seems like all books are best sellers is because these are the more popular books, so you’re gonna be hearing about them and seeing them in bookstores more So it just seems like every book is a best seller, when in reality there are tons of books without this distinction that are not even available in the store Comment from : CharlotteModel |
I mean how do you compare a fantasy novel to a marine biology reference book? You can't So it's actually logical to have different genre rankings The problem is the title needs more clarification than just "best" Comment from : Blah Smith |
Jokes on them I can't read Comment from : DR4ST1C M34SUR3 |
Just a sales plug Comment from : John Jones |

It's about as useful as the Game of the Year editions of yore; any game publisher could slap that onto their game Comment from : Kapten Teo |
Not to mention some authors are able to buy their way onto the list So something that ends up a best seller (this happens a lot with nonfiction, think political and religious books specifically) may not actually be very good It’s just the author can afford to buy many copies of their own book Comment from : MadMusic26 |
Check to see if they have a "dagger" or not A dagger means the title was claimed by bulk purchases inuding before release Comment from : Druid Zephyrus |
Blah blah blah, it means nothing Comment from : Nate Rollin |
We have the same phenomenon in Germany with "Spiegel Bestsellers", I always wondered why it is the way it is and this makes sense Comment from : Jana |

Because people want money and none of them work Lol Comment from : Cyn Hicks |
Maybe it's best to not use arbitrary awards to determine what you want to read? Comment from : DoctorSantaPhD |

I recently bought an NYT Bestseller I never had before, I'm in Germany and it's not such a common thing here to see that Anyway, the book was City on Fire, it's almost 900 pages long, I read it from beginning to end, and it's trash I hate it so much I'm never ever again buying anything from NYT Bestseller list Comment from : Martinab |
Here in the UK, we have 'a Which? recommended product'brYou see it all the time in television ads, so I tried to do a little diggingbrTurns out, to get that sticker, you just have to be nominated by a customer, and the Ts and Cs say that employees of the company can nominate them as well! Comment from : Noah Talks Money |
I mean, I know a booktuber that wrote a book and even before it’s realise it said it’s a ny bestseller on the cover i don’t understand it Comment from : Tessa F |
The New York Times isn't worth the paper it's printed on these days so a book with that label doesn't do that much for me Comment from : thegrim418 |

I learnt to avoid any new York time best sellers 👍 Comment from : popopotato |
The New York Post is too politically influenced to be a reliable source of book criticism Comment from : uhoh |
I think the reason is Harry Potter At some point all books on the list were HP so they had to diversify and create other lists so other books would have a chance Comment from : Claudia Reina |
I own a bible that has New York Times best seller stamped on the front 💀 Comment from : pixtree° |
This is not entirely accurate Thousands of books are published, only a few hundred get on the NYE bestseller book The thing is that all the thousands of books that aren’t getting on the list aren’t successful enough for you to ever see on a shelf, so it appears that every book is a bestseller Comment from : Amphora Morph |
They be lying Comment from : The_Dunks |
It's also a visibility thing that's self-perpetuating - if you buy a book because it's a NYT bestseller, the book gets more sales and stays on the list and other people buy it because it is on there, etc And: the lists don't measure quality, only quantity, leading to some pretty bizarre scandals of people pushing their books on the list by buying a lot of copies themselves & promoting future sales by exposure Comment from : Lena |
I feel bad for those who come #2 on the list Comment from : Puroo Roy |
Also a book being sold a lot doesn't mean all those people read it, so that title really doesn't mean much of anything Comment from : KenzieHurlock |
So, like most everything, it's a big ol lie and means nothing Everyone one knows it means nothing, but everyone pretends it means something Comment from : rainynight02 |
I thought it was similar to the “Number 1 movie in the world” where lots of movies get that title because it changes from week to week Interesting to see it’s not that case Comment from : Abe 10Alpha |
