Eldritch Teletubby
Also, some publishing companies will buy 10k copies of the book immediately so that it gets the title right away

I didn't know that but it makes sense
Comment from : Sarah B

J S Elliot
Selling 10k copies of a book with organic growth and marketing is actually a task, believe it or not (I work in the industry) But I will agree that hyper-specific niches water down the impact of best seller categories, looking at you Amazon and 50+ subgenres of Urban Fantasy
Comment from : J S Elliot

JERRY RICHARDSON
Amazon is the same, lol!

Comment from : Alpha Omega

Happier Thymes
"Because that totally makes alot of difference!" (Paperback/Hardcover) it definitely does when selling because I'd rather buy a paperback for $12 rather than a hardcover for $30
Comment from : Happier Thymes

Comment from : Bless Yie

Olivia Ó Casáin
I saw someone say that getting a NYT bestseller badge is basically a participation proze at this point
Comment from : Olivia Ó Casáin

Micah 5:2
WE BROKE GODS LAW 2000 YEARS AGO, GOD PROVIDED A SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST WHO SUFFERED AND TOOK OUR PUNISHMENT ON THE CROSS THE BIBLE SAYS IF WE DECLARE WITH OUT MOUTH JESUS IS LORD AND BELIEVE IN OUR HEART GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD YOU SHALL BE SAVED Romans 10-9 GOD WILL FORGIVE YOUR SINS AND GRANT YOU EVERLASTING LIFE ALL BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS
Comment from : Micah 5:2

all the books are dubbed bestsellers except those really niche ones that are actually good :/

Comment from : KyrieFortune

SERES DE LUZ
Even my shopping list could become a NT best seller
Comment from : SERES DE LUZ

Hazel Cohen
NYT best seller means nothing now
Comment from : Hazel Cohen

Kaz
10000 copies sold is no little amount of books 😅
Comment from : Kaz

Shyanne Hayes
the implication that there isn’t a huge difference between paperback or hard back books (there definitely is)
Comment from : Shyanne Hayes

JK Hegarty
Thanks! Good to know!
Comment from : JK Hegarty

“Brick squad”
Isn't new York times a meme like yeah let me read a newspaper about stuff I don't care about and that will never effect my life in anyway
Comment from : “Brick squad”

brodamerons
lol who doesn’t know this
Comment from : brodamerons

Khoa Doan

Comment from : Khoa Doan

JustAnotherInternetWiseGuy
I wonder if it's the same thing as when movie critics ( or studios) call a certain movie "the number 1 movie in the world" for an advertisement for a movie that already came out Despite that not really being the truth
Comment from : JustAnotherInternetWiseGuy

Arbiter
How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life is a book by YouTube personality Lilly Singh released on March 28, 2017 Her book is a New York Times bestseller

Balded One

Comment from : Balded One

rithika
The weird thing isbrbrI was thinking about this today morning
Comment from : rithika

The Tributary
10,000 copies is a lot of copies sold and considered a commercial success If a stadium full of people are willing to buy a book, it gets my attention People who have marketed books know how hard that is
Comment from : The Tributary

ItzZoZo Fashion
As a bookworm I can tell that hardback and paper back are huge differences! Paperbacks are usually floppier and easier to read without breaking the spine! They are also cheaper Hardbacks are sturdy and more expensive Hardbacks are also almost always taller than paperbacks so they can be harder to fit on a shelf I do agree though that every book is a New York Times Bestseller though
Comment from : ItzZoZo Fashion

Pradyumn
How many books are there totally
Comment from : Pradyumn

Itzhak
Hardcovers and paperbacks have historically been different genres Now more “literary” works are being published as paperbacks, but before a “paperback” was seen as less literary
Comment from : Itzhak

Laur-un (stage name, actually called Faith)
zero prestige or credibility now
Comment from : Laur-un (stage name, actually called Faith)

ZEST
Bruh 80 of the books I read aren't bestsellers how tf are you finding so many bestsellers
Comment from : ZEST

JQ
There were some books that weren't that good and were titled as best sellers One that comes to my mind is The wrong family by Tarryn fisher
Comment from : JQ

Vulcher
Seems like capitalism if failing in the book company
Comment from : Vulcher

Alex Rediger
Thanks
Comment from : Alex Rediger

Ramayana Roxas
Hardbacks and paperbacks have a huge difference
Comment from : Ramayana Roxas

Jordy G
Seems like this is more for the author than the reader
Comment from : Jordy G

Jae S
A lot of what you’re saying is true but I think this would have been more factually presented if you had placed it in context You give away your lack of understanding the book market by your comments on hardcover vs softcover and the lack of context to the numbers That aside, ranking the books by genre allows for readers to find the popular books that suit their tastes Otherwise it would all be Thriller and Romance which outsell the other genres almost exponentially
Comment from : Jae S

Mayo Agard-Olubo
It's probably because the ones that actually make the list are the ones that get publicity so you don't tend to hear about the ones that aren't "bestsellers"
Comment from : Mayo Agard-Olubo

MamaJo
Thank you I was wondering this the other day
Comment from : MamaJo

Mols4999
weird that this is in my recommended I was looking at my book shelf today and had this exact question
Comment from : Mols4999

Bel Rossy
Just for US books right?
Comment from : Bel Rossy

CharlotteModel
The other reason it seems like all books are best sellers is because these are the more popular books, so you’re gonna be hearing about them and seeing them in bookstores more So it just seems like every book is a best seller, when in reality there are tons of books without this distinction that are not even available in the store
Comment from : CharlotteModel

Blah Smith
I mean how do you compare a fantasy novel to a marine biology reference book? You can't So it's actually logical to have different genre rankings The problem is the title needs more clarification than just "best"
Comment from : Blah Smith

DR4ST1C M34SUR3
Jokes on them I can't read
Comment from : DR4ST1C M34SUR3

John Jones

dan raz
Like Academy awards Oscars, they are there but nobody cares anymore
Comment from : dan raz

Kapten Teo
It's about as useful as the Game of the Year editions of yore; any game publisher could slap that onto their game
Comment from : Kapten Teo

MadMusic26
Not to mention some authors are able to buy their way onto the list So something that ends up a best seller (this happens a lot with nonfiction, think political and religious books specifically) may not actually be very good It’s just the author can afford to buy many copies of their own book
Comment from : MadMusic26

Druid Zephyrus
Check to see if they have a "dagger" or not A dagger means the title was claimed by bulk purchases inuding before release
Comment from : Druid Zephyrus

Nate Rollin
Blah blah blah, it means nothing
Comment from : Nate Rollin

Jana
We have the same phenomenon in Germany with "Spiegel Bestsellers", I always wondered why it is the way it is and this makes sense
Comment from : Jana

Comment from : anne jia

Declan
I'd be more inclined to pick up a book if it had a "You tried" award on it
Comment from : Declan

Cyn Hicks
Because people want money and none of them work Lol
Comment from : Cyn Hicks

DoctorSantaPhD
Maybe it's best to not use arbitrary awards to determine what you want to read?

Interesting informationbrJohn 3:3brJesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God brbrMark 1:15 - “The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near Repent and believe in the gospel!”
Comment from : Amber Gem

Martinab
I recently bought an NYT Bestseller I never had before, I'm in Germany and it's not such a common thing here to see that Anyway, the book was City on Fire, it's almost 900 pages long, I read it from beginning to end, and it's trash I hate it so much I'm never ever again buying anything from NYT Bestseller list
Comment from : Martinab

Noah Talks Money
Here in the UK, we have 'a Which? recommended product'brYou see it all the time in television ads, so I tried to do a little diggingbrTurns out, to get that sticker, you just have to be nominated by a customer, and the Ts and Cs say that employees of the company can nominate them as well!
Comment from : Noah Talks Money

Tessa F
I mean, I know a booktuber that wrote a book and even before it’s realise it said it’s a ny bestseller on the cover i don’t understand it
Comment from : Tessa F

thegrim418
The New York Times isn't worth the paper it's printed on these days so a book with that label doesn't do that much for me
Comment from : thegrim418

Some Bicycle
FINALLY, someone is answering the important questions

Why is this narrated like it's some big discovery? This is common knowledge
Comment from : Alon Benach

Tresson Karu
Well, I don't know about books, but I look at it with what happened with the switch online best seller It wasn't about quality, but how well it sold I think it's gotten better over the years, but there was some bad games on there for awhile

Joshua Vidrine
So it's like most things the New York Times slaps their name on; deceptive at best or an outright lie in some cases
Comment from : Joshua Vidrine

popopotato
I learnt to avoid any new York time best sellers 👍
Comment from : popopotato

uhoh
The New York Post is too politically influenced to be a reliable source of book criticism
Comment from : uhoh

Claudia Reina
I think the reason is Harry Potter At some point all books on the list were HP so they had to diversify and create other lists so other books would have a chance
Comment from : Claudia Reina

pixtree°
I own a bible that has New York Times best seller stamped on the front 💀
Comment from : pixtree°

Amphora Morph
This is not entirely accurate Thousands of books are published, only a few hundred get on the NYE bestseller book The thing is that all the thousands of books that aren’t getting on the list aren’t successful enough for you to ever see on a shelf, so it appears that every book is a bestseller
Comment from : Amphora Morph

The_Dunks
They be lying
Comment from : The_Dunks

Lena
It's also a visibility thing that's self-perpetuating - if you buy a book because it's a NYT bestseller, the book gets more sales and stays on the list and other people buy it because it is on there, etc And: the lists don't measure quality, only quantity, leading to some pretty bizarre scandals of people pushing their books on the list by buying a lot of copies themselves & promoting future sales by exposure
Comment from : Lena

Puroo Roy
I feel bad for those who come #2 on the list
Comment from : Puroo Roy

KenzieHurlock
Also a book being sold a lot doesn't mean all those people read it, so that title really doesn't mean much of anything
Comment from : KenzieHurlock

rainynight02
So, like most everything, it's a big ol lie and means nothing Everyone one knows it means nothing, but everyone pretends it means something
Comment from : rainynight02

Abe 10Alpha
I thought it was similar to the “Number 1 movie in the world” where lots of movies get that title because it changes from week to week Interesting to see it’s not that case
Comment from : Abe 10Alpha
