Hi folks! One thing we wanted to make clear is that our calculations do in fact include both EV charging and EV maintenance We subtracted the difference of extra savings to the retail price of the EV Kona Here are the numbers from Consumer Reports:brbrICE: SUV/Crossover lifetime fueling costs, $19,900brEV: SUV/Crossover lifetime charging costs, $8,700brDifference: $11,200brbrICE: lifetime maintenance costs, $9,200brEV: lifetime maintenance costs, $4,600brDifference: $4,600brbrAs there have been a number of questions around including the cost of maintenance and fueling of the EVs, we should have made this clearer in the original video Thanks for watching and if you're curious to dig into the numbers, here's the full study: advocacyconsumerreportsorg/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/EV-Ownership-Cost-Final-Report-1pdf

In a long term, our EV cost 5 to 6 times less to run/drive compared to ICE equivalent model Since running EVs on our roads cost so little, more people are going electric Off course there are several drawbacks of EVs but due to my frequent local commutes and being able to charge at home, it's simply feasible to go EVs without having to worry about range Due to fewer moving parts, it's simply cheaper to service as well

Tesla battery costs $23000 to replace and average 12 years Camry engine replacement $ well they run for 20 years EVs are for white libs to feel better … Chinese parts etc

The burn't EVs from the Lahaina fire is presenting a special problem for cleanup The lithium is toxic And who is driving around an EV after a disaster? Try find a charging station when the power is out for weeks or months

This all BS I want my gas powered car Burning up the planet? Tell that to China, and India LOL And if Schumer is involved in this, it is a scam Liberals will destroy America Now they want to get rid of natural gas, the cleanest source of energy
Comment from : Robert Cruz

The $7,500 tax credit should be a rebate from the manufacturer so the other half of the country might afford to get one I'm retired and will never get it, period brBiden's half a million chargers to support a potential 165 million homes seems a bit low on the Wow factor brFrom what I've heard, broken charging stations are the norm, not just an occasional thing out there in EV land Now that Elon has partnered with GM & Ford for building and usage of charging network, the move from broken CCS type charging machines to the Tesla NACS system, which have a much higher uptime rating But smart people buy a $400 Level 2 (240v) charger for their home and hardly ever use a public charging system
Comment from : LJ Prep

Dream Lifter
Don’t buy a Hyundai If you wanna be climate conscious don’t buy a car from a brand that makes junky cars that you’ll have to replace much sooner The more goods you buy the worse it is for the environment
Comment from : Dream Lifter

Horsepower and Talk
Electricity is not necessarily cheaper when you go to some public charging stations I now of some free ones but they are slow The faster ones have all kinds of fees kind of like buying concert tickets on line One reason electric cars are possibly cheaper to run is because your are not paying road tax, wait till they figure out how to screw with that As far as cleaner goes what are we burning to make the electricity
Comment from : Horsepower and Talk

You forgot to mention insurance which is double where I live

EV tires are so expensive, cost $270 each tire because requires special duty tires for extremely heavy vehicles, batteries are twice heavier I stick to gasoline vehicles are the best plus, quicker filling up instead charging in 30 to 45 minutes between intervals Also requires replace batteries every 10 years cost $20,000 and future jack up cost $30,000 or more
Comment from : Kenneth McCann

How do we make public transit affordable for rural Wyoming?
Comment from : Scott Street

Phil Greenfield
What creates the electricity in the first place? This is a complete contradiction The EV car that you bought new, will have a very low resale value Who is going to buy them, with a battery that has a short life left

Don’t forget that anything the Government give you, is the tax payers

Comment from : mike foster

Mark Strickland
Take away the taxpayers' subsidies, and EV's are more expensive 500,000 charging stations paid for by the taxpayers? How many gas stations did the tax payer pay for Climate change? Going to EV's is estimated to lower global temperatures in the tenths of a percent - in one hundred years Stop the madness
Comment from : Mark Strickland

Rodney Tod
Also, what about the pollution caused by the power plant producing the electricity to charge these?
Comment from : Rodney Tod

Rodney Tod
What about the pollution caused by mining the materials for EV batteries and once the batteries will no longer charge what happens to them and the chemicals that make up that battery?

I keep track of every dollar I spend for my personal vehicle My 2007 Hyundai Tuscon had a total cost of $35,85559 over the 6 years I owned it The cost of gasoline was only 3087 or $11,06989 of the total This compares to the largest cost component, the final purchase price (after sale) $13,86000 The remaining 32 was for insurance 1646, maintenance 1193 and miscellaneous fees, tolls, etc of 208 My 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe had a total cost over 6 years of $40,71987 The cost of gasoline was only the 3rd largest cost component at $8,59869 or 2112 of the total Again, the cost of purchase after sale was $15,912 or 3908 The 2nd largest cost component was insurance $10,00415 or 2457 The remaining approximately 15 was for maintenance, fees, tolls, etc My 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe thus far has accumulated $36,18429 in total costs It had a sales price of $23,30527 or 6441 of the total The cost of gasoline after 4 years of operation is only $3,62541 or 1002 of the total Since the cost of gasoline is only a small percentage of total costs and EV's have a much higher purchase price than gas vehicles, I don't believe that EV's can be justified on purely economic terms In addition, when you consider the limited range, time required for recharging, lack of a market for used EV's, it doesn't make sense to purchase an EV Further, Ford just posted a loss of over $3 billion on their manufacture of EV's or approximately $60,000 for every EV they make You don't have to be an economics major to know that is not a sustainable business model I predict that EV's may top out at 15-20 of the our total fleet falling way short of government mandated goals

What are all the used old batteries going to do to the planet? Also, how is the power grid going to handle it if everyone in the US has an electric car when most power grids can’t handle the amount of electricity being used already?
Comment from : Steph Winant

Stacy Newsom
Battery materials like cobalt lithium and everything like that Is very bad for the planet it is no free ride? Diesel runs the 18 wheelers

until the battery dies after a few years and cost 30 grand to replace it, that is

I'll keep my Corolla and use a electric lawn mower How much fuel is used to make these batteries? Maintenance on my gas car is about 500$ per year I can take it anywhere with no worries of not finding fuel EV makes no sense for my vehicle needs How about we increase the number of hybrid vehicles They are the way to go Gasoline will always be available too many people make too much money on petrol
Comment from : Fljeff7

Can I return that 1500 lb battery to your residence lol after 8 year life span , dont tell me EV saves the planet , EV will destroy it, Coal is needed to make electricity

My car is a bog standard 12 16v 78hp petrol 2009 corsa mk3, on £30(just over half tank) at £141pl at a gulf petrol station I did 232 miles doing 50/50 A roads and motorways This equals 77 pence per mile driving sensible-ish and did near 85 hours driving give or take 10 minutes all this was just over 5 days straightbrbrCan any electric car to date do 232 on one bar above half full or travel near 85 hrs in one go on one bar above half full, my corsa can as stated above brThe government want us in electric cars but no electric car can beat my car for range ( 232mls just over half tank, around 85hr driving, just over 5 days straight and fuel light had not come on at this point but, was close to coming on

If modern cars have taught me anything electric vehicles with all the electronics have a greater chance to fail after warranty
Comment from : Tigerfire75

Did you factor in that the battery costs are going up and that they have to use cheaper batteries which mean more charging because you can't go as far?
Comment from : Tigerfire75

Joon Bugg
I truly believe that, once solid-state batteries are ready for mass production and use in passenger vehicles, this will be a real earth-shaking moment for the entire EV industry These batteries will be lighter, require less hazardous materials, will be safer, will be cheaper, and will be more reliable than current EV batteries They will, I believe, become the EV standard by 2030
Comment from : Joon Bugg

David Easter
But the cost of charging at charging station is almost as much as fuel ⛽️ but the charging is also much longer process than than pump and go who has 30 to 45 min to kill each recharge
Comment from : David Easter

Ernie
at least for now yes i know tech improves this could change on average you can only get about 10 years out of a battery so you have to include the cost of a new battery which is about 70 of the cost of the car
Comment from : Ernie

Eugenia Skelley
Ev cars last about 10 years, before you need a new battery Plus, the battery degrades over time meaning more charging more often Super charging isn't as cheap as you may think, wait until everyone has an EV your power bill will go through the roof A gas car can last a good 20 years + if you take care of it
Comment from : Eugenia Skelley

K Scott
EV batteries will need to be replaced A single battery costs anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000, depending on the car At that price, many people are choosing to replace the car, as opposed to buying a new battery How green is that? I find it interesting that battery replacement cost was not addressed in this video Spontaneous EV fires are also a problem They are very difficult and time consuming to extinguish, requiring A LOT of water and fire department personnel hours Fire departments are finding EV fires dangerous and challenging It seems we have the cart before the horse Lots of issues with EV's that should be solved before they come rolling off the assembly line
Comment from : K Scott

Jonathan Martinez
What about when electricity goes up because they have to use more natural gas to power the grid
Comment from : Jonathan Martinez

Angus MacGyver
EV range 259 miles max 10-24 hours charge time, my gas car, 350-400 miles range, refill, less than 10 minutes for a road trip of 1400 miles one way, sorry, but sticking to my gas burner
Comment from : Angus MacGyver

Our power grid can barely handle a cold snap before having blackouts Yet let’s get everyone in electric cars, the power grid is not ready for wide scale electric vehicles

She did not include the state surcharge just for owning an EV (since you aren't paying highway fuel taxes)brShe did not include the value of your time while you wait to rechargebrNor the more frequent tire replacement that EV necessitatebrbrWant to slash that 28 emissions? Easy -br1st, HOME SCHOOL all kids No more buses or dropping off picking up the bundles of joy No more wasteful gas consumption slowing down through skrewel zones Less traffic congestion Less consumption - less POLLUTIONbr2nd, Work from home (telecommuting)br3rd, Start using hybrids instead of all EV - best bang for the buckbr4th, Eliminate all multi-way stops - allow the street with the highest traffic volume to have the right of waybr5th, eliminate all sports stadiums - watch them televised Use stadiums property for ev charging stationsbr6th, Increase speed limits to a more economical speed, NOT a less speed Less speed creates more pollution 35mph can easily be raised to 45-50 mph which gives better fuel economybr7th, stop putting ethanol in the fuel That alone wastes fuel and creates more pollution than it mitigatesbr8th, no more immigration PERIOD More people use more and create more pollutionbr9th, no more writeoffs for kids in any way Reducing the population reduces use and therefore reduces pollution And not just pollution from vehicles eitherbrbrRequire all tires to have a low rolling resistancebrbrEliminate starters for cars and trucks Not hard to do with modern programmingbrSaves weight of the starter and you use a smaller batterybrbrLots of other things can be done too without being forced into EV's and your rights being trampled in the process

battery cost between 10k up to 30k AND TAKE 250000 TON OF MINING MATERIAL TO MAKE ONE BATTERY, THE CAR CREATE LOST POLLUION EMISSION BEFORE HE DRIVE ONE KILOMETER, THE BATTERY LOST DISTANCE RANGE EVERY TIME YOU RECHARGE AND RECHARGE THE BATTERY AND WILL COST MUCH MORE WHEN THEY BUILD MORE ELECTRIC HYDRO THAT WILL USE THE FOSSIL FUEL YOU CAR DONT BURN , INSURANCE ARE VERY EXPENSIVE BECAUSE ACCIDENT WILL KILL MORE PEOPLE AND THE REPAIR FOR A SIMPLE BUMPER ACCIDENT CAN COST 20K
Comment from : gaetan lizotte

Robert Neuner
Batteries have a 10-year life A replacement battery for a Lexus id $47,000 No one will buy your used car The price is the sticker price with nothing in return Just one of the disadvantages never talked about by climate change promoters Also, a "Fast" charging station installation for your house costs about $12,000 You probably won't be allowed to install one in your apartment If you could, most property rights say it now belongs to the landlord Throw that money away? EV bad,

Your number crunching is completely wrong, just wait until ( i hope not) millions of EVs are on the road, charging them will cost as much as gas now, you will probably be paying charge per KM on top as well In Australia car registration goes on the weight of the car, so EVs are much heavier and will cost more to register

I've always wondered what the true price is per mile to run a car I personally cannot afford an electric car and unless an electric car will be cheaper to run than what I'm driving, I won't buy it For example my car is a 2016 Hyundai I paid 3900 for the car 1350 to repair it 500 to register and pay taxes 20 dollars a month to insure it and it gets about 27 mpg average I do put a lot of miles on my car per month about 1350 My TOTAL out of pocket cost with insurance car payment and fuel is 2775 My price per mile is 205 cents per mile oh and by the way 90 of those miles are tax credited There's no way an electric vehicle will get those numbers!brBy the way, to those who read this, adding payment plus insurance plus fuel (electric or battery) plus yearly registration and all repairs and maintenance, what is your true price per mile you are paying for your vehicle?brIs it worth it?

The $7,500 is not free money Government does run a business and make profits It takes our tax dollars for revenue The $7,500 credit is being paid by ALL Americans and floated to the smaller group of EV owners Soon, there will be a road tax which will increase costs of KWH's and the subsidy will go away EV car batteries are way too expensive to replace down the road so more of these vehicles will wind up in the junk yard sooner than combustible engine cars which many more Americans keep, rebuild, etc Not to mention most shops can't repair EV's and parts store will become obsolete as the public won't be able to repair them either Millions of jobs lost and a lot more trash in the junk yards

Wouldn’t it just be easier to get the man-made-climate-change enthusiasts to just plant trees Supposedly, there are 81+ million of them If each of them would just plant 1000 trees, this would fix the problem That would be 81 billion trees producing oxygen and consuming CO2 There are roughly 330 million people in the USA If other countries did the same (use 1/4 of their population to each plant 1000 trees), there would be no problem
Comment from : The Man in the Black Hat

Shawn Viggers
You are leaving out a lot of info Tesla cars are serviced at dealers only due to intellectual tech rights on the computers, at high dealer prices service rates are highbrTires wear at 2x the usual rates and can cost 2x the price Death rates are much higher in EV collision due to 30to 60 higher vehicle weights, mass X speed equals greater impact damagesbrAnd the biggest bill is the $30,000 EV battery replacement cost on 5-8 yrs of age Most EVs will not be repaired after 8;yrs especially as tech advanced and makes old systems obsolete 2011 chev Volt battery is $25,000 all most the cost of vehicle replacement 2 cars produced for the life one one How much energy is used to make and operate 2 over one
Comment from : Shawn Viggers

cory littrell

All of these videos try to basically justify the waaaay more expensive electric car But that does not justify the robbery that are the car dealers Yeh sure batteries cost a lot, but it's the same chassis most of the time, minus the transmission Sure there's R&D, but 2x the price? Hard to believe it's not greed driving up these prices

Don't do this Its a fire hazard to use so many extensions You even use some janky box to cover the extensions Hire electrician and build outdoor charger near your parking or buy a properly rated long single extension You even said only 100K/year salary people could afford EVs Those guys can't afford to atleast build basic chargers on their home? GTHO EVs are just like your other electrical appliances, same rules applies You're trying to promote EVs but doesn't show EVs good practices You do not want to eff around with electricity and find out EV are still relatively new tech compared to 100 plus years of ICE, Govt/manufacturers are also still figuring this out as well as users In the meanwhile, just follow best practices pls
