Tom Strahle
The guitar is a 1965 Gibson Folksinger BTW It's missing the lower pick guard  It originally came with two, an upper and a lower probably because (say it with a crotchety old man voice) "these kids today are using these things called plectrums and scratching up the top of the guitar  So let's glue two big pieces of plastic on the top to protect it"
Comment from : Tom Strahle

TeleGuy
Guitar stand is great, but with my first acoustic, I hear humidity is key to preserving your guitar I live in New England where the humidity is crazy in the summer and bone dry in the winter How can I combat that?
Comment from : TeleGuy

John Eavis
Hi Tom, some good tips so thank you I’m 69 and taking up the guitar as a complete beginner I’m going down the electric guitar route and thinking about buying a Yamaha Revstar, so your tip on strings was particularly usefulbrAgain thanks

Do you provide training lesson for adults
Comment from : Tek Net

LIGHT BEAR
Put the guitar in a place you pass a lot If it’s already out & ready to go you tend to pick it up more Practice the major & minor scales, very easy to make music & jam It’s always fun when you learn to bend those strings
Comment from : LIGHT BEAR

Ellen
playing guitar kills my finger tips very painful how do I take that pain away?
Comment from : Ellen

Deward Roy
I started playing at age 61, 8 years ago now Here are two important things I've learned 1 When fretting, press on the string only as hard as it takes to make the note It's much easier to take the time to learn this from the beginning than to correct oneself years laterbr2 The saying, "no pain, no gain," is pure BS when it comes to playing the guitar If you're hurting, stop Take a break Over time, you will learn to anticipate the pain and take that break before you hurt
Comment from : Deward Roy

Sosa Arts
you said "less time in your life" but this kind of statement can be of any age
Comment from : Sosa Arts

robert thibodeau
Those are all great tips Tom, I'm 60 years old and I'm picking up guitar for the 4th time, this time I'm determined to do it right and succeed, if I had YouTube when I was a young person and had access to people like you I would be a very accomplished guitar player by now, thanks for all you do
Comment from : robert thibodeau

RM
Thank you so much for these common sense suggestions encouraging me to start playing at the age of 51 Kind regards!
Comment from : RM

Paul Chapman
I think with Stairway Guy the best approach would be to identify a few parts of the song that he'd most like to be able to play - just a few short riffs - and teach him those alongside some simpler songs Just saying no would probably discourage him too
Comment from : Paul Chapman

Hils Hunt
Thanks

Excellent reminder about EFFICIENCY! I'm nearly 58, and I'm on my 9th straight day of minimum 1hour playing I have so much more discipline and rational expectations than I did at 14! Started already knowing four C-progression chords I'm feeling more and more natural strumming and having a blast now I always clock a minimum of 10 reps of the song with no singing first Been working on only 2 simple songs "Come Away With Me"--Nora Jones, and "Texas Sun" --Khruangbin B chord KILLED me until I naturally started focusing on those changes around it PLUS, I have a pen and paper right next to my energy drink, and mark a hash for every run through which shows me my work when it gets tedious Fingers don't hurt any more until about an hour in Thanks!
Comment from : Michael Amos

Al Lubbe
Thanks!

Jennifer Ditty

Irish Brickhouse
What about how to get around trying to hit certain notes but even though you don't have fat fingers you still can't hold down one string while holding others and not suppress a string you aren't trying to For example when trying to start stairway holding down the first 3 strings on the 5th fret and the 4th string in the 6th fret you end up suppressing fret 6, 3rd string there by making those first 4 strums not sound right cause the 2nd strum is muffled And no matter what I do, I can't hold that 6th fret 4th string without muffling that 3rd string! It makes me think "I'm never gonna progress far because with so many songs, that will be a problem!"
Comment from : Irish Brickhouse

Halbert Landers
I'm70yrs and want to play a classical song any suggestions

The secret of playing guitar is muscle memorization (dexterity) which you will get it by practicing a lot It takes months to syncronize your brain with your fingers

Great tips As a 70 year old beginner I am taking these suggestions to heart Thanks (btw I have a 50 year old Yahama 12 string from my college days; a 6 string Taylor and my favorite a 10 string Michael Kellycheck it out)
Comment from : Mb Dalton

Roy Shelton
I started to take guitar lessons at 11 years old After 5 lessons the teacher told my mom I would "never learn" to play guitar Partly me, but the method he used (Mel Bay) was one string at a time, which might have been good for some but bored me to death So a few years later (high school) I still wanted to learn guitar so I borrowed one from a friend and decided to try to learn some chords and play a song I wanted to try to learn - it was the House of the Rising Sun, and it wasn't difficult to eventually learn Point is - it was simple, and a tune that I liked, and kept my interest to learn, instead of "one string at a time" to tunes that seemed meaningless to me Keep at it, and build on what you learn
Comment from : Roy Shelton

Trader Dad
If someone insists on Zeppelin, which song would you suggest for beginners?
Comment from : Trader Dad

Dimitrios Souflis
Just bought a guitar after 33 years without one Never had formal training but I had learned some basic chords and strumming on my old classical guitar Now I try to inspire my daughters (we share the guitar among us), I do fingering exercises and such, to develop basic dexterity, but I also allow myself the luxury of practicing songs with simple chord progressions and even some heavy metal riffs (I bought an electric guitar this time) As a classical guitarist, you'd be very amused how simple folk like me have fun with two-string "power chords" Why not to enjoy oneself with little things while practicing harder ones? Waiting years to actually "play" a guitar like a musician is too late One should be able to have fun from day one
Comment from : Dimitrios Souflis

Luka Calov
Ex yu rock is great for beginners!brMost songs have 3 or 4 basic chords

Anybody mentioned "Lady in black" already? It's e-minor all the time and on the word "long" it switches to D-major just to switch back to e-minor on the syllable "mid":brbr"She came to me one morning[]her LONG hair blowing in the MID-winter wind" brbrEverybody starts with this, right?
Comment from : Alteisen_ 2000

Jumpseat
Strum through your mistakes, keep the flow going, and make it right the the next time around! Do not stop and redo, that is like throwing in the towel, and it won't help you at all Seriously

Comment from : bo pa

Mrbob4u
What helps me is, and I am "restarting" at age 72, is learning a song I really like, but which is relatively simple In my case, as Beatles fan, And I Love Her and Til There Was You, paricularly George's lead They are simple, but challenging enough to motivate me to keep on keeping on BTW, I go back and forth from my acoustic to hollow body electric Both I keep in my home office
Comment from : Mrbob4u

Jeff
Great tips, thank you I used to play basic guitar when I was a kid Nothing very advanced, but I thought I knew enough to pick it up again at an intermediate level I"ve realized I need to go back to beginner While my understanding is there, and a lot of things look incredibly simple, the muscle memory is just not there to put my fingers in the right place I get the stairway to heaven analogy I'm restarting from scratch

Dolores Neilson
Thank you Tom for your realistic and compassionate approach to teachingbrSo happy you mentioned the 5 minute rule This principle has one achieve far greater success as it is realistic and DO-ABLE for all I swear by the baby steps approach It has been my path to success whenever I was faced with difficult goals that had me tempted to give upbr Same principle: "The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step" A single step a day will be my mantra as I too begin this long journey that eventually will have me use my guitar successfully as a tool for self-expression Thank you for sharing your knowledge and understanding core principles (in addition to music theory) that are an important part of learning
Comment from : Dolores Neilson

Timothy Powell
My tip as a beginner If you are playing for fun, and are unlikely to ever play live Play sitting down not standing up It's so much easier because you can tilt the neck Learn standing up later if you need to
