I’ve been thinking about this a lot since I began to do education degree in the US All the best middle schools in China are public schools, colleges too Those foreign language middle schools are definitely prestige but an average middle school serves average kids fine It’s not the situation in the US though The public education system fails kids especially for those who are from a underprivileged background in my opinion

I’m in my mid 30s right now and maybe I lose track of what younger generations are like nowadays Do they really speak English that good? Are they from international school though? If students from local Chinese school have that level of English proficiency, that’s very impressive I remembered at my age back in the 90s or early 2000, most people speak with a heavy accent and lack of vocabulary (ie sucks at English)

Their age was the The time when I started learning English in Canada, and I am fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin after 30+ years I’ve tried to learn Czech and Hungarian too when I was working in Europe briefly, and Hungarian is by far more difficult to learn than other languages I think it’s easier for children to learn to become bilingual or multilingual than adults Most of my Canadian born Asian friends or peers speak only English, it’s a common thing that they are reluctant to speak their parents native language when they start going to school that have only English speaking classmates and teachers

There are TONS of specialized private schools where are culturally based Similar to this it's a specialized school and not mainstream Korean schools, Spanish schools, French school, and a lot of the students in these schools are not of the culture

Remember after the Korean War a lot of American habits and traits became normal in Korea, hence fried chicken is huge etc They have access to American TV so some learn that way and they understand the importance of learning English as Asia and western world is starting to slowly merge What has become popular in Korea is slowly moving throughout Asia hence what your now seeing in China and all over Asia Give it 20 years and Asians will be speaking there own native language and English just as well

I am a native Chinese speaker I grew up in places like China and Hong Kong but I originally went to an International School, where they teach us English as the main language 😂 There was a local section in our school as well, but they spoke Chinese and Cantonese, and had English as a sub language I have an American accent as well and now I study in Britain Some of my classmates say I sound really American because they’re not familiar with my accent, but growing up with classmates that were native Chinese and spoke American English was really normal for me 🤣 The reason why we develop these kinds of accents differ, most International schools teach Chinese students following either the British curriculum or the American curriculum In doing so they teach pronunciations following American or British culture and naturally students develop the same tone Thank you for the video!
