I recommend a beginner should do something videos like this usually ignore and that is to look for a used guitar There are very good deals to be had especially if you avoid the big name manufacturers I have two dreadnought guitars in excellent condition; both have solid wood tops The combined price for these was under $150 Canadian One is an Art and Lutherie by Godin with a cedar top and the other is a Cort with a sitka spruce top I have spent more to have them professionally set up but every guitar for a beginner should be set up otherwise a beginner will become frustrated in their learning journey Like everything in life it will take a bit of effort to find a guitar you will treasure

The first acoustic i bought was a Ibanez F-360 BK in 1983, i think I had some guitars before that was given to me before that, but the Ibanez was the first i bought myselfbrbrI upgraded the Ibanez in 92 with piezo pickups It sounded fantasticbrbrMy daughter is still using the guitar performing livebrbrI have bought several acoustic guitars the last years, but I still miss that guitar

Can't help but disagree with your idea that the more money you spend , the better brMy current guitar , a Taylor , cost £900 On the the same day that I bought that guitar I tried , amongst others , another Taylor costing £1600 To me , the cheaper one sounded WAY betterthe higher melody strings projecting much louder than the bassesso that's the one I bought brbrOne of my students once had a cheap £250 Tanglewood guitar It failed ALL of the much sought after specifications most guitarists seek YET it sounded great and played great tooand SO cheap brbrWhilst it may be a GENERAL rule that more expensive is better , there seem to be plenty of guitars out there that BREAK ALL ""THE RULES " but still give musical satisfaction while saving you a PILE of money brbrAnd this begs the question are " the rules " correct anywayor maybe theyre just guitarist's religious dogma

I got my first guitar when i was about 10 years old Used all my "christmas and birthday money" to buy a fender c60 I eventually, like a lot of kids, got tired of it, but never wanted to get rid of it Couple of years have passed, got back into music in highschool playing bass, drum, piano (trying a little bit of everything) I am now almost 20 and starting to re-learn guitar all over again That feeling when playing, as if the guitar "grew up with me" I just can't describe it 👌

The Blytonian
Unless price is an immaterial consideration which it isn't for most, for beginners through early intermediate I don't see the point in buying anything other than a decent quality pleasant to play moderately priced Asian manufactured guitar of a size and style which fits them and suits the genre they are most interested in playing There's far too much brand seeking prestige easy push sell in the industry My choice would be something from Yamaha or Cort Even their entry level starter pack units are up to the job, and usually for not much more, something nicer can be had which will last an aeon to carry intermediate players through to that point where they are sufficiently advanced to be able to validate through applied skill a higher end purchase
Comment from : The Blytonian

Jody Lowe
I am far from a guitar snob (all my guitars are less than $400), but my experience is that you need to spend more on an acoustic you can upgrade a cheap electric with better pickups, etc not much you can to to make an acoustic guitar sound better

Oh, I didn't mention (so many) other brand guitarswill keep this shortcould easily get really lengthy I had Martin guitars, too Anyone looking for a great, inexpensive Martin player, consider the Martin DM (etc) Tough, rugged, great sound, not much $$if you can FIND one Rule # 1: play a BUNCH of guitarseach one will have its own VOICE, no matter the model # If it "speaks" to you, THAT'S the ONE !!! -- Doug ("Crossbow") USA
Comment from : Douglas Fuqua

I know this is an old vid, but you askedbrMy first guitar was an inexpensive small blonde accoustic my Dad brought home for me to learn on (me: age 6) I traded for an inexpensive Goya accoustics (still is my all-time favorite go-to guitar, with my setup on it) As a very young teenager, I acquired a Teisco solid body electric, an amp (etc), a couple more accoustics, etc Started doing "mods" on those (learning all the time) Again, very young, turned pro, and Dad brought home a Gibson J-200 (NOT SJ-200), in the tooled leather case, and fur-on-leather interior Nice Too much guitar for me & Dad helped me swap it for showroom-new 1970 'Cudahad plenty of cars, too Years passed, gigs, touring, studio/recording, managing bands, and all the rest happened, college degrees, marriage and kids (20 years), moving all across the country, etcbr --- now, I professionally compose and write songstons of guitars, keyboards, etc etc Simple life, nowbr --- pretty solid video for anyone considering that first step Well done, guys

There are a ton of good opinions on here, plenty of folks like myself who have something like a Sears Silvertone in their past and have worked their way up to the 'good stuff' Relatively recently, (Me being 3/4 of a century old) I purchased a nearly new Taylor that was on consignment at a music storeIt is the guitar I wish my Martin was, actuallyAnyhowmy thought is to spring for a Taylornew or usedyou will never be sorry -Veteran '66-68

As someone who is just (re)starting on his guitar journey, you mentioned some excellent points in this videobrbrOne thing not mentioned, though, is how a person's hand/finger size should factor in to their purchase decision Isn't it true that some guitars have wider necks than others? Would someone with (relatively) large hands have more difficulty playing a guitar with a small neck size guitar than one with a slightly "fatter" neck?

Food for thought!! It is the guitar player who makes the guitar ; the guitar is just a means! Its quality is primordial in the conduction of Music so You are the one who makes it happens in the end! Never stop doing what you love Follow your passion! It will become part of you! It will enrich you! PEACE!

Ok I'm amd old fart and i have a martin d28 but it sure ain't for a new guitar player way to much money But I noticed nobody is saying anything about used gueetars and thats where most less affluent beginners should start find a friend or better a relative that plays to help you and start your search There is always bargans to be had a pawn shops and on craigs list too don't try to get one the first day wait for the bargain to find you As a beginner i suggest a small body classical guitar Classical guitars have nylon or gut strings This is preferable for beginners because for the first month your finger tips will bruise less Also its just easier to push the strings down the easier it is to play the better chance you have to keep at it ok so get your 200-300 bucks and go hunting with your helper who knows how to play so they will understand what i am saying Most of these youtube contributors have an interest in sales thats fine, but there is bargains out there, But you need help to know what is good and playable so you get a good box the first time, A lot of us didn't Good hunting

I've been playing guitar for forty years and professionally I played for 25 I found the best way to buy an acoustic guitar is, you don't even have to take it off the rack you just take a pic and you pluck on the strings and you listen You can tell right away I look for deep body on the low strings and gingle on the high-strings You can tell quite easily with this exercise you don't even have to take the guitar off the rack

I'm 3 years too late on this video but worth checking out a german guitar website thomann, they sell acoustics and ship to the US, specifically Harley Benton house brand, most models are pretty high rated, some as low as 69 entry level to 400 pretty great quality I bought a 250 dollar model and it plays great, i don't compare brands, but i'm impressed for the money

4 years on a crappy little Rogue American Chinese made $100 guitar Its at the end of what I can make it do which is so cool because it makes me realize how good I can be on a guitar I've outgrown it and might go with a Taylor 110e next brbrHave replaced the pins on it with new tusq pins, new Tusq saddle, new machines heads, and needs a new nut since the original is trashed brbrWhat a work horse it was but its time On to the next one!

Buy a used FG-800 Yamaha off of Craigslist, don’t pay more than $150 if it is perfect, make sure the action is low, cannot fit two quarters stacked inner fattest string at 12th fret But a $5 tuners from China on EBay Learn the following chords - A, D, C, G, E minor and A minor Play 1,000 songs for your friends

Cris P Bacon
For beginners, here's my own guide To be technical, (Applies to all amount of budget)br1 Get a guitar with a light headstock to avoid "neck diving" - Neck diving happens when your guitar headstock is heavy thus requiring you to support it which reduces your play speed (Some players ignore it while I found it annoying when your headstock is heavy especially when I was still a beginner)br2 Get a guitar with a flat fretboard profile - Flat fretboard relatively makes it more playable than a Curve fretboardbr3 Get a guitar with "Low action" - Low action means that the strings are low and close to the fretboard and make it easier to playbrbrThis is based on my experience and it's the same guide I followed when I bought my electric guitar

I bought a morgan nylon guitar but I did not like the sound of nylon and I didnt get hooked on it So later on I bought a steel string very cheap guitar I loved the sound but the action was soooooo high that it was discouraging to play it After awhile I decided to buy a Yamah APXT2 and I love it I play it everyday and I love it I will probably always buy Yamaha because they are such good quality I especially like the Apx and CPX series
