How can you be so contradicting after riding the vintage racer?honestly I get the index shifting and disc brakes but apart from those two upgrades your modern entry level road bike is what it is a bike for anyoneEddy Merck is a pro and he rode a pro bike! fUCK YOU AMATEURS WITH EVEN MODERN TECH STILL UNABLE TO WIN RACES Comment from : Kuli Herb |
Campagnolo was THE brand for super bike parts in the 1960s and 1970s A lot of their stuff was esthetically beautiful to look at but not very functional, like the brake hoods and the straight down deraillerur Comment from : Gandalf Greyhame |
Fabulous comparison I am in my 70s and have health problems so I ride an ebike mostly But I still love my 50-year-old Falcon with Campy gears and shifters I did upgrade to 700C from 27x1 Comment from : wvhaugen |
I see they're going to keep kicking that "tubeless is faster" lie down the road It's not even faster than standard clinchers Comment from : NotALizardPerson |
Ah, my first road bike, a steel Peugeot, had shifters on the down tube - definitely agree indexed shifters were a massive leap forward, but it's quite fun when you get a lever shift spot on! Comment from : Phil John |
Luv vintage steel Prefer to pair it with modern drivetrains Comment from : a buddha |
I have an entry level Merida Silex 200 gravel bike and it is a most comfortable beast, however it is very similar in performance and comfort to my 1960's Freddy Grubb bike decked out with (modern?) early STI levers and big tyres That said I also ride a proper olden days Hetchins Racer with high end 1960's components and that is shall we say a beauty but a little more tricky to get smooth gear changes, quick unplanned stops and general comfort, it is fast though when you put the hammer down Comment from : Whats Next |
I only ride vintage bikes Never had a modern one So much nicer to look at Comment from : Richard Marshall |
A new aluminum bike is way faster than a steel bike when you are going uphill Comment from : Tirebiter |
Now slap the same components on the vintage style steel frame and do another comparison Comment from : Martin Axe |
I remember seing Eddy Merckx training on his bike in the Brussels surburb in the sixties Comment from : Roll Mops |
so your proving the Champs of old were better athletes with less gearing? Comment from : old man strength |
finding an old handmade steel frame isnt always going to break your budget, having a different/new groupset, handlebar/bartape would probably be cheaper and better than buying an entry level bike out right Comment from : Dookiesaur |
IT'S SO RIDICULOUS TO SEE AND HEAR THESE GUYS TALK ABOUT THE FEW RIDING LEGENDS WHO WON RIDING VINTAGE RACERS AND STILL KEEP SAYING MODERN IS BETTER AND THEY HAVE YET TO DO ANYTHING AMAZING WITH THEIR NEW BIKESSTILL COMES DOWN TO THE POWER OF THE RIDERBE A REAL WINNERGO GET A VINTAGE RACING BIKE AND TRY TO BE THE RIDER YOU WANT TO BE A WINNER LIKE GREG! Comment from : Kuli Herb |
WHICH IS WORTH MORE A VINTAGE ALPHA ROMEO OR A NEW BENZ? MODERN IS FOR BEGINNERS Comment from : Kuli Herb |
42x23 is fine, if you have the legs Comment from : Christopher |
What an absolute awkward position to be in riding either bike Comment from : Eric Dolby |
Had to laugh at the backlog of cars when Si pulled in after the first run 😅 Comment from : Deez Nutz |
As usual you've wasted your time by not using the same tyres Comment from : Theo Brookes |
It's nuts the trouble GCN went into making this episode Hand making a replica! Just to go head to head with a Triban!Very cool result too, 50 years ago they knew what had to be done Today the entry level range keeps a certain level which we now know can be compared to a tour de France winner Albeit in the late 60s Really impressed guys, well done, Comment from : Kenneth Coughlan |
That vintage bike will outlast the modern one by an order of magnitude Comment from : pocoapoco2 |
Higher gearing was always there even in the 90s it was just roadie peer pressure which prevented people from using them The religion was 🌽 Comment from : Przemyslaw Gawel |
I’m enjoying the bike so far wwwyoutubecom/post/UgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things Comment from : José Luis de Oliveira Moreira |
TOE CLIPS RULE!!!!! Comment from : Thomas Smith |
i tested the Triban today, and i agree with the other posts, the tirers are just not made for speed they're super grippy and stick to the road which is great at low speed, but when you try to push faster the grip works against you Comment from : sam sung |
You went too cheap For $100-200 more you could have gotten a new bike that would have performed better Comment from : Jason Bannan |
About the brake lever shapes, even BITD I and many others realised that the Campag levers were horrible ergonomically Universal mod 68 were lovely, Weinmann were also very good to hold I raced with Universal, beautiful items for a fraction of the Campag price Comment from : henrybikeman |
just finished restoring a vintage steel race bike with friction dt shifters Your comment about not wanting to shift is spotv on the amount of energy to reach down, bslsnce, execute the shift and come back adds up Its like riding 12 different singlespeeds Comment from : T MB |
Speed? Comment from : Antonio Špoljar |
It's gotta be under $100 in tires away from keeping up with or beating the Merx When I went from Vittoria Zaphiro that came with my bike to Perreli Cinturato, despite the latter being marketed as more of a commuter bike tire, it made me 2 mph faster Comment from : Liza Rhode |
Bye2 decathlon…… Comment from : wan rony |
Eddy Merckx on his worst day on a vintage bike would blow your sox off dude Comment from : Annette Anderson |
I think it's kinda funny that new bikes are getting more like 80s road bikes like wider lower pressure tires and a 2x chain ring I used to drive 10 and 12 speed bikes as a kid after I tried an old 10 speed for the first time after that I got rid of my cheap fairly new mountain bike like it was bad luck Road bikes rule Comment from : larchman |
I think it's more fun going for hilly rides on vintage bikes I feel like not having 'bailout' gears forces me to ride faster up the hills to keep the cadence up Comment from : ajmrly |
Straight to the results, where my boyz at? Comment from : somethingsomthingsomething |
My first good bike was a brand new '77 Schwinn Continental that I bought with money earned from a paper route IIRC, I paid $14999 USD + tax Comment from : Mark von Wisco |
I want to see a comparison with modern components on vintage retro bike vs modern components on modern bike Comment from : Leotronix Babu |
Who cares Comment from : Tarmac and cyclocross |
This channel makes me appreciate being in the US because I have never seen you all bike on a completely dry road 😭 Comment from : Max Sherman |
I really wonder how the results would change if he used the original toe straps with the vintage bike Since that would change the easiness of the ride heaps and heaps Comment from : Jenno Theissling |
You had a problem with the hoods when l was racing back in late 60s you were never on the hoods , always in the drops as for padding on the bars we used to put crepe bandage under the tape Comment from : Paul Vale |
Reallyreallly bad amateurs on top bikes and pros on supermarked issues Comment from : Morten Poulsen |
It’s no surprise a custom made bike beats a mass produced bike I ride a vintage frame with modern components and it’s awesome Comment from : Chezwick Cheese |
Wtf I have a bike like this, a retro one legit like this but different color Comment from : Random Damian |
what would you call Vintage? because I randomly ride a 2005 Trek 7300fx Disc with a 650b47 rear on a triple palin 120 click hub 700c40 front using the OEM DEORE 3x8 and just TT bars added to an upright Sparrow style bar does it all switched to 700c44 studded in winter on an OPUS zermatt with racks and similar handlebar set brbrbrsold my new bikes with 1x drives Comment from : David Murray Holland |
Comfort and ease if shifting are huge for the average ridergotta say vintage bikes are super cool! Comment from : James Peters |
If you ride a vintage road bike, if you keep your hands on the brake for a long time, do you have lower back pain? Comment from : grr |
I have a top spec basso, anno 1980s, campa record etc My brother rode it and says it belongs in a museum 😀 It has the rare cobalto brakes, which are absolutely useless My canyon Ultimate is a completely different machine I rode down 20 gradients today around Lake Garda, I would have topped myself on the Basso 😆🤣 Comment from : Michael van der Voorn |
Lol around 500 my ass Not even close, the triban is listed at 900 everywhere Comment from : BigCountry |
Loved it guys, i built an 87 Cannondale up to 2020 specs Comment from : David Gillespie |
Now put some decent tyres and lets see the difference Comment from : Alberto M |
You upgraded the vintage bike to a modern, top-of-the-line tire, but not the modern bike Comment from : w0ttheh3ll |
bIndexed/b downtube shifters work just fine Comment from : w0ttheh3ll |
Entry level 1000$ bike lol Comment from : Leigh Taft |
Thank you for the informative video
brHowever: This video suffers of the disease of many youtube videos: superfluous and annoying background music 2:22 7:22 It's tiring attending to the narration over the background music, masking the topic of the video and mostly adding nothing to the content
brNarration or music is fine but one on top of the other is distracting Comment from : Sven Lima |
as a def Not Pro for me its just much more about the feel and I rlly understand how your describe em i had some old bikes and for sure there are some things you notice that have changed for good but i just would not trade the feeling you have on a bike that wants you to take of Comment from : Xyz |
Here is a bicycle performance challenge you WILL NOT do: A $2,350 Cannondale CAAD13 105 (or equal) against a premium $15,000 road race bike How much difference is there? Comment from : hornet224 |
As a non racer, I automatically change all my bike to friction as soon as possible, mainly due to simplicity of maintenance Comment from : Oliver Jessop |
The big issue I personally have about carbon framed bikes is you feel like you are riding a rolling billboard plastered with garish manufacturers decals The old steel bikes had small diameter tubing so you did not know the brand unless it was stationary much more tasteful Also in this day and age of products not lasting it is refreshing to ride a steel bike knowing if kept out of elements it will simply last forever and is relatively easy to repair Good for the planet methinks !!! Comment from : karl partridge |
Are modern carbon bikes faster than old steel racers Definitely !! Are carbon bikes cooler than handcrafted steel ones or ride as well ? Definitely not !!! Comment from : karl partridge |
I ride only recreationally on a steel Bob Jackson The campy 7 speed freewheel has enough gears but they're too small, or I'm nowadays too weak I'm in my 3 lowest gears most of the time Comment from : Dave |
I put brifters on my 1947 steel framed bike Best of both worlds Aluminium frames are horrid things Much too harsh Comment from : James De Ath |
Hi I agree about the tires I went from riding 22 mm tires to 32 mm Yeah the 32 mm tires handle the bumps in the road better, but, felt sluggish The 22 mm tires felt light and quick and responsive That was on my 1987 Trek 510 commuter bike I now ride a 1984 Cannondale SR300 with 25 mm tires feels quick and responsive but, because of the Aluminum frame not as smooth and comfortable as the steel frame of the Trek 510 Could you do more videos on a bike like the one Simon did with the 7-Eleven team bike I would like to put 10 speed groupset on my 1984 Cannondale Comment from : Liam McGough |
I grew up in the Reynolds 531, Campagnolo, tubular era The craftsmanship and paint of the high end steel factory bikes was far more beautiful and better executed than anything I've seen on the racks in the past 2-3 decades The custom built bikes were even nicer By the mid-80s things started to change brbrI recall when the owner of the shop where I worked, who happened to be a frame builder too, took the leap from Campy to Shimano Some of us were shocked but Bill's response was "you have to try it" He was right easier shifting and less trouble getting and maintaining adjustment Case in point, I had a 531 bike where the front Campy derailleur either clicked the crank or dragged on the chain under load--we never did solve that problembrbrOf my current 7 bikes one is a 1983 Trek with a Reynolds 531 frame and downtube shifters it's a nostalgic ride but I rack up the miles these days on "non-competitive" type bikes with various types of shifters on the bars Comment from : John Grossbohlin |
Yes, 23-42 you need, lol Comment from : mullrae rae |
So the result is: riders used to be tougher Comment from : Aaron SA |
As primarily a mountain biker, the difference aero makes breaks my brain The only time I've ever really noticed it was rolling down a hill doing about 50kph and going from basically intentionally hunkered down to completely vertical not holding the bars, it felt like I put on an air brake! Comment from : Skartimus Prime |
My first road bike (entry level) early 80s had downtube shifters Next road bike late 90s entry level Trek w/ Shimano was leaps and bounds better Early 00s upgraded to Litespeed w/ Campy Record and again huge improvement, especially stopping power In the market to upgrade to aero road bike Took one for a test ride and aero frame, disc brakes, and Di2 is another huge upgrade over 20 year old round tube Ti bike with Campy Record YMMV Comment from : Lou Lamoureux |
Just bought a bike today Havent owned one since i was 9 years old I forgot how tiring the bike is Comment from : Karl M |
Hi guys great video, i have a vintage road bike, should I spend money to fix it and improve it or should I just buy an entry level road bike like the one in the video? Comment from : er pampa |
Only if you pedal hard! 😅 Comment from : Justwantahover |
Yeah, what do you want to feel? Comfort is important to a point Comment from : Orlando Gonzalez |
Should have used Super Record :-) Wouldn't have made any real difference though Which sunglasses are those? They look like a worthy successor to my old Factory Pilots Comment from : A Craig West |
It would be interesting in these comparisons to know the rest times between runs and also as always seen in these tests, the order of bikes used is never changed so the newer bike was always second (ie potential of rider being more tired) Comment from : 069 ban |
Use continental 5000 tires with latex inner tubes and the cheap bike will probably go faster But that is speed and it is not that important for normal people I think that the old steel bike is way more rugged and is already here for 54 years How long will this modern bike lasts? Comment from : Eva Jun |
Gotta love the classic roadiesbrWe'd always swap the six-speed block for a 13-18 item back in the day Comment from : Lewis72 |
The vintage just looks so much better 😊 Comment from : Steve Saunders |
Lol I feel you off the saddle but I still like old the cheaper the bike the more I ride it why??? Comment from : Carlos Ochoa |
Same frame, wheels and tires, but one with claris and one with dura ace Comment from : Speichenbieger |
Modern cheap bikes cost as much as vintage super bikes too Comment from : Bill Kong |
I love to tell you about people sometimes ask me when I’m on my old bicycle and ask wat it is and tell them it’s a 1970 Koga pro similar like yours you build some people know what it is and offer me some money and I tell them they can get a bicycle with modern gears for way less money now a days wat I did with my bicycle I change the front 2 gears with oval ones and that helps a lot with changing gears I still ride the bike a lot and it never let me down greets from Holland 🇳🇱 Comment from : Dennis Dewit |
I appreciate that you did the time trial “beeps” 😂 Comment from : Fred Howland |
That feeling you're talking about comes primarily from the geometry The old bikes felt like they wanted you to go faster Comment from : Marvin Daugherty |
Thanks for using the same pedals, it makes it fair compared to the last videos in the past Comment from : Nonexistanthuman |
I have a made to measure steel The most comfortable bike I own As someone says below Steel frame with modern group set is perfect Looks better than bloated tubes too Comment from : VueltaSkelter |
Lance said it’s not about the bike 😮 Comment from : Andrew Patterson |
Back in the day we didn't want tiny gear ratios, because we assumed we'd wimp out & take out time getting up the hill or Mtns Comment from : mike kunnecke |
Having raced with down tube I disagree with you We did not avoid shifting! Frthermore for criterium racing, we used a bar end shifter on the rear!brTubular tyres are WAY more responsive and lively Clinchers are dead And cheap clinchers with big diameters are deader And heavy rims+dead tyres is miserable compared to tublulars on under 400 g rims Even on my kids bikes, I've had from both of them, when they've put my wheels on, "Oh my god your wheels are so much lighter!" reactions Well duh--that's what Mavic tubulars with Vittoria CX/CG feel like Comment from : vibratingstring |
