Did seating chart ✅ brSometimes a give a break but not expected✅brMeet kids at door✅brGet their attention ✅brDid not try the Noise thing 😮brLike giving autonomy but keep boundariesbrNeed to keep firm Act upset when you are not upset to emphasize a point Don’t address a person, but a general behavior that we all do and is not excepted like swearingbrbrHaven’t need a talk in the hall yet 😅 I general try to catch kids before they leave the classroom or at lunch about behavior issues if it is not way out of line I also remind them of past issues so they don’t happen again during the yearbrbrGood points!!

It's amusing to see how companies have started to recognize being a leader is better than being the boss Whereas in school, teachers are more concerned about being the boss instead of being the leader

Top Tip: Find ways to celebrate your student successes: have a board that acknowledges top performances on tests, most improved students of the week, 100 homework completion, or top scores on a project or classwork, top class average (or median) scores on a testbrbrAlso, hang up exemplars (85 or above) of projects (individual or group) on the wallbrbrFocusing on creating a room that celebrates students will create a culture where the kids police themselves
Comment from : BluDrop5

BluDrop5
Tip #10: Excellent idea!
Comment from : BluDrop5

BluDrop5
Tip #9 is SO KEY! Try to address the issue in a respectful way brbrFor example, if they cuss, you can say, "thank you for attempting to speak to others in a respectful way Next time, please use different words "
Comment from : BluDrop5

BluDrop5
Tip #5: Have someone in the group be responsible for keeping the group quiet So, they will monitor the "NOISE" on the board
Comment from : BluDrop5

BluDrop5
Tip #4: If they don't immediately become silent, take away the amount of time you waited from their break
Comment from : BluDrop5

BluDrop5
Tip #1: Switch seats monthly It helps students learn from different places in the room

Comment from : Kevin Sam

J Zachary S
I'm a teacher & so glad I don't teach in such a public school or something like that - that sounds so hard to be a disciplinarian like that
Comment from : J Zachary S

oo0Spyder0oo
Unfortunately some kids have such bad parenting that they bring it to school and they are past being disciplined The problem lies at home, and that cycle is hard to break This wasn’t such a problem once as there was more respect for the elders than now, brought on by the government bodies making kids unaccountable for their actions because ‘minors’ can’t be punished for doing adult crimes
Comment from : oo0Spyder0oo

Diane Hamilton
We can't send students in the hallway unattended to fill out a refocus sheet (restorative practice sheet) and students won't go to a designated area to fill one out (defiance) What do you suggest?
Comment from : Diane Hamilton

Diane Hamilton
How can I call a student in the hallway when I only have students for 30 minutes in music class and the other students aren't able to do an activity on their own (usually all group instruction) while I am talking to them?

Carrie Vail
Love these ideas One tip I have used that helps with a student who is trying to challenge me on moving seats or so is to jot a Post-it while I am teaching and lay it down in front of them, saying that they can either move or it will have i_____/i consequence No conversation, no battle, and they typically realize I meant it because I am so casually in control and they respond appropriately I also have fun post-its for this that say "Seriously?, Just Saying, Mental Note, etc" I also have mood notes for students to fill out if they want to let me know how they are doing and high five notes, so its becomes a class culture element
Comment from : Carrie Vail

Ramsey Pietro Nasser
Very good
Comment from : Ramsey Pietro Nasser

Curst Saden
These tips are excellent!brbrOne trick I have found that helps is, when you have a student who regularly acts out, give them a little responsibility Ask them to help you move boxes, set up materials etc, little things to occupy them It may seem counter intuitive to give a misbehaving student more responsibility, but I have found that making them helpers makes them feel valued and they end up acting out less in the future
Comment from : Curst Saden

charity Okolo
HI ,Thom ,I quite agree with u Changing of seats make students uncomfortable but is helpful at the long-run Charity

Matthew Johnson
Hi Thom, love you videos Social Worker turned middle school teacher here I unschooled my daughter for 4 years when she, of her own volition decided to go to school in grade 7 We did almost no formal "educating" and she was at grade level Which from the get go led me to realize that I don't have any faith in the school system or curriculum However, I get the feeling I am expected to "tow the linebr in a school setting regardless of my personal opinions The problem is when a middle school student says to me "Do we have to do this?" my answer in my head is "No you don't, and there will be little to no "real-world" consequence to this" I just have no conviction that the curriculum is teaching these kids what they need or want to know I actually don't think I "believe" in school But I enjoy facilitating fun and enjoyable experiences for kids about topics they are interested in which will offer a bit of light in a very dark world and future
Comment from : Matthew Johnson

Rebeca Higgins
I do love all the tips but I will use the word Noise!!! For sure

Chris Hansford
Tip 9 is the most important for me Getting into power struggles, using sarcasm or put downs, or yelling has probably never yielded an improved situation for me and has often created further problems It makes me feel even worse Also, using a kid’s name when they’re acting up for attention often serves to reward them with the very attention they seek I’ve heard it said that no word is more beautiful to someone than their own name
Comment from : Chris Hansford
